On this day in Manchester. England, the UK electrical engineering firm Ferranti introduces Atlas, the world’s most powerful computer, at an ceremony at Manchester University. The computer has advances that includes the world’s first paging system and pipelined operations.
On December 7, 1941, the Empire of Japan launched a surprise military strike on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack resulted in significant damage to the U.S. Pacific Fleet and led to the deaths of over 2,400 Americans, with many more injured. This event prompted the United States to enter World War II, rallying public support and catalyzing a turning point in the conflict.
In Israel, four teenagers are arrested for writing and disseminating the Goner worm. The worm gained attention worldwide as it caused an estimated $80 million damage to computer systems worldwide. The teenagers were tracked down after the web handles they used was found within the virus code and was matched to IP addresses.
