James Gibbs (1810-1873) was an American inventor and entrepreneur who is credited with developing and patenting the first chain-stitch single-thread sewing machine in 1857. Gibbs' sewing machine was especially well-suited for sewing leather and heavy fabrics, which had been difficult to sew with previous machines. He founded the company "The Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company" with his partner, William E. Willcox, to manufacture and sell his invention. The company was successful and eventually became one of the leading sewing machine manufacturers in the world.
