Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights leader was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. The African American clergyman most famous for his "I have a Dream" speech was fatally shot while standing on the balcony of a motel. In the following days, the aftermath of his loss resulted in riots and unrest, which eventually led to the creation of a National Day of Mourning and Remembrance.
