1920Prohibition went into effect in the United States, banning the sale, production, and transportation of alcohol. The ban remained in place until 1933, when it was repealed.

2003The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry, killing all seven crew members on board. The disaster was caused by damage sustained to the shuttle's heat shield during launch, and led to the suspension of the Space Shuttle program for over two years.
