The Chicago Elevated Rail System, also known as the "L," began operation on June 6, 1892, and is one of the oldest rapid transit systems in the United States. The first section of the system was a 3.6-mile-long stretch of track that ran between Congress Street and 39th Street on the South Side of the city. The Elevated Rail System was a significant engineering achievement at the time, as it allowed trains to travel above ground, which helped to alleviate traffic congestion in the city's streets. The trains were powered by electricity, which was a relatively new technology at the time, and the system's elevated structure allowed for uninterrupted travel through the city. The system was an instant success, and ridership grew rapidly as more sections of track were added over the years. Today, the Chicago "L" system includes eight lines that cover 102 miles of track and serve 145 stations throughout the city and its suburbs. The original Chrysler Corporation was founded by Walter Chrysler in 1925, and it was created by merging the Maxwell Motor Company with the Chalmers Motor Company. Walter Chrysler was a prominent figure in the early automotive industry, having previously served as the president of the Buick Motor Company and the chairman of the board of the Willys-Overland Motor Company. When he took over the Maxwell Motor Company in 1920, it was struggling financially and in need of a major overhaul. Chrysler set about reorganizing the company and developing a new line of cars that would be more competitive in the market. He also made significant investments in research and development, which allowed the company to introduce a number of groundbreaking features, such as hydraulic brakes and high-compression engines. By 1925, Chrysler's efforts had paid off, and the company was in a much stronger position. He decided to merge Maxwell with the Chalmers Motor Company, which had been acquired by Maxwell earlier, and create the Chrysler Corporation. The new company quickly became one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, and it continued to introduce innovative new models throughout the 20th century.
