Insulin was first used to treat diabetes in humans. Canadian researchers Frederick Banting and Charles Best discovered insulin in 1921, and the first successful clinical trials were conducted the following year. Insulin has since become a life-saving treatment for millions of people around the world with diabetes.
A scientific study reported the discovery of the oldest known living organism, a 200,000-year-old bacterium found in ice cores drilled in East Antarctica. The bacterium, named Carnobacterium pleistocenium, was still alive and able to reproduce despite having been frozen for thousands of years. The discovery shed light on the hardiness of life and the potential for finding life on other planets.
President Theodore Roosevelt declared the Grand Canyon in Arizona a national monument to be preserved for all generations to come. This declaration protected the Grand Canyon from mining, ranching, and other commercial activities and paved the way for its eventual designation as a national park in 1919.
