Here's what we learned: We still have some way to go before mass adoption. According to DappRadar, there are less than 2000 blockchain games and only 1 million unique active wallets. Compare this to the countless video games you can access on the Google Play Store and the App Store. The third generation of crypto games is coming. CryptoKitties defined the first era, showing what NFTs and in-game ownership can look like. But it didn't succeed due to Ethereum's lack of scalability. Axie Infinity was the star game of the second (play-to-earn) era. But its poor economic design, which attracted more hustlers than traditional players, was doomed to fail. So the third era of blockchain gaming is taking lessons from the previous generations, prioritizing the gameplay instead of the earning potential of the game. The distribution is getting better. The Epic Games Store has hosted a ton of web3 games like Blankos Block Party, Superior, and Star Atlas. Apple allowed the sale of NFTs, although charging 30% of each sale. But the good thing is that now the mainstream gamer can access web3 games. The future is free-to-own After the Play-to-Earn, Play-and-Earn, and Play-and-Own, the new meta is Free-to-Own. It's better than all previous versions because it lowers the barrier to entry by offering free NFTs without gating the gaming experience.
