It looks like 2020 was overall a record-breaking year for Nintendo. Nintendo released its fiscal results (via Eurogamer) to investors this week for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021. Based on the announced figures, the Nintendo Switch Console has now sold 84.59 million units.
That's a pretty impressive figure when you look at the last generation Nintendo console, the Wii U, sold only 13.56 million units as of December 31, 2019. By comparison, the Wii sold 101 million units.
In total, 587.1 million consoles have been sold for the Switch. Over the life of the Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizon have emerged as the console's best-selling titles. Mario Kart 8 has now sold approximately 35.4 million copies to date, while Animal Crossing has sold about 32.6 million copies. Overall, these are some impressive, staggering figures.
Other amazing first-party sellers for the Switch are Super Mario Odyssey (20.83 million units), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (22.28 million units), and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (23.84 million units).
It appears Nintendo's days and struggles with the Wii U are now a distant memory. Nintendo has weathered some tough storms but still managed to come out well on the other end of it.
Last March, Nintendo and Universal Parks opened Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan. It is the first of four planned Nintendo-themed installations at Universal theme parks across the globe. Universal's Epic Universe Park, featuring Super Nintendo World, is slated to open in 2025. A Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood is also currently under construction as part of a new park expansion. Its opening date is TBA.
