Too Long; Didn't Read

Mortal Kombat 12 is coming out this year, according to co-creator Ed Boon. Staple characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Kung Lao, and Liu Kang are definitely going to be included in the game. Other characters that have a very strong chance of making the cut include Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Jax Briggs.

In a Warner Bros. Discovery earning call, it was (in an anticlimactic way) announced that not only is Mortal Kombat 12 real but that it’s coming out this year.

Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, has already done everything except outright say, “Mortal Kombat 12 is the next game we’re working on”, so this doesn’t come as a huge shocker to MK fans. It is, however, the confirmation they have been waiting for.

But with this question answered, more questions pop up.

When is the game coming out? How is it going to play? What’s the roster going to look like?

We’re now entering the speculation phase.

Mortal Kombat 12 Roster

Right off the bat, we can most likely predict a good chunk of the roster. Staple characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Kung Lao, and Liu Kang are definitely going to be included in the game.

Below them are characters that have a very strong chance of making the cut, but it’s not a guarantee.

This includes characters like Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Jax Briggs. The reason why they aren’t a cinch is because there is a possibility that they are phased out for newer characters.

Characters who also have a good chance are Mileena, Kano, and Cassie Cage, but they’re not a safe bet either.

Also, since MK9, Mortal Kombat has always had guest characters. There is no way that they are going to miss out on that sweet, sweet cash; fans should expect a few surprise guests.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: What about Raiden? He’s essentially in every game.

This is a spoiler for Mortal Kombat 11, but in the end, Raiden relinquished his power. Maybe this is their way of putting Raiden on the back burner for a while. But who knows?

Characters have died and been brought back; Raiden losing his power doesn’t mean we won’t be able to play as him in MK12.

However, speaking about the MK11 story does lead to more reckless speculation.

Mortal Kombat 12 Plot

At the end of MK11, Liu Kang gains control of the hourglass which means he can control the timeline. This leads to a whole other universe of possibilities. Everything we know about the Mortal Kombat story and lore could potentially change.

Then again, the Mortal Kombat story is sometimes wishy-washy; they could just say, “jk lol” and keep the status quo.

However, we also saw him talking to the Great Kung Lao, a character who lived way before the events of the first Mortal Kombat game.

This could be an indication that this game takes place in the past, or that the Mortal Kombat timeline and events as we know it have already changed.

We have a tiny hint of what the roster will look like and what the plot will be. Next is the gameplay.

Mortal Kombat 12 Gameplay

There really is no point in speculating about this because Netherrealm Studios (the studio that makes Mortal Kombat) likes to switch things up all the time. Mortal Kombat 9 feels different from MKX which feels different from MK11. How MK12 will feel and play is up in the air.

There is one thing we can speculate on, though. X-rays, Fatal Blows, super moves, or whatever you want to call them, are definitely returning. Since making their debut in MK9, they have been a huge hit with the fans, and it’s safe to say that they are a permanent addition to the franchise.

This leaves us with only one thing left to speculate: the release date.

Mortal Kombat 12 Release Date

Okay, here are all of the facts. Warner Bros. Discovery said that MK12 is coming out this year. We know that Street Fighter 6 is coming out on June 2. It would be very dumb for both games to come out within the same time; it most likely won’t come out around then.

We’re already entering March without having seen any footage of MK12 which means it’s probably not coming out within the next three months. That leaves August and beyond. So, it seems that MK12 will release toward the last chunk of the year.

Fans have already waited a long time for this game; they can wait a few months longer.
