The internet has enough hype. This update is about the opposite: real AI transparency, real prizes for real utility, and real tools for writers and builders. Here's everything from November 5th, 2025 to March 2nd, 2026.

For Writers

More AI Transparency with GPTZero

Back in December, HackerNoon announced its partnership with GPTZero, benchmarked as the best AI detector on RAID with ~99% accuracy. This powerful AI detector now analyzes 5,000+ monthly blog post submissions reviewed by the HackerNoon editorial team, and our readers can now see AI detection disclosures on published blog posts.

With this partnership, GPTZero’s detector was integrated into HackerNoon’s Editing Protocolto evaluate and review all new HackerNoon blogs. Additionally, HackerNoon is also using models developed by GPTZero, such as Model 3.7b, to research and report on AI’s impact on blogging over time.
HackerNoon </> GPTZero: More About Our Integration

Here’s how HackerNoon and GPTZero have implemented automated AI detection:

  • All new submissions are currently analyzed using GPTZero. HackerNoon editors review over 5,000 monthly submissions from more than 50,000 independent contributors, checking for AI usage before publication.
  • GPTZero’s models have become a core part of HackerNoon’s Editing Protocol.
  • Readers can now see whether a story was written by a human or assisted by AI, enabling trust in what they read.

This partnership supports two critical goals:

  • Improving transparency and trust in digital publishing and AI usage at scale
  • Celebrating independent tech writers by acknowledging and preserving human creativity

AI transparency and human creativity FTW!

**Proof of Usefulness Hackathon, Get Your Project Vetted for Real Utility

\

HackerNoon launched the Proof of Usefulness Hackathon - a global developer competition that rewards one thing and one thing only: real-world usefulness.

The internet is overflowing with software that looks impressive, sounds intelligent, and quietly fails to help anyone. We’ve normalized pitch decks for products that don’t exist, AI demos with no users, and MVPs that launch with applause and vanish without a trace. Meanwhile, people still need tools that work.

So we did something different.

From January 5 to June 5, this global competition focuses on projects that demonstrate real utility in the real world.

There’s $150,000+ in cash and software prizes for winners and $1,500+ in software perks available for participating projects that can prove it. The hackathon is supported by companies that care about production software, not just demos: Bright Data, Neo4j, Storyblok, Algolia, and  HackerNoon.

Note: Individual developers and budding startups are welcome to participate, with access to free tools that help you build and promote something meaningful. Any technology is welcome, but bigger prizes are reserved for AI and ML projects that use sponsor technologies.

Projects are evaluated based on real-world utility, evidence of traction, audience reach and impact, technical innovation, market timing and relevance, and functional completeness.

Why You Should Participate in Proof of Usefulness Hackathon (Even If You Don’t Win)

You’ll get:

  • A free Proof of Usefulness evaluation
  • An instant PoU score and report
  • A ready-made blog post showcasing your work to global tech audiences
  • Eligibility for free software worth $1500+ for every participant
  • Eligibility for $100,000+ in prizes
  • Global validation & promotion by HackerNoon

And if nothing else, you'll walk away knowing exactly where your project stands - in reality, not theory.

Speaking of Technology Hackathons…

Teams can now run their hackathon directly on HackerNoon - where developers, founders, and builders already read and build every day. That means built-in distribution to millions of monthly readers, from day one.

How to Run Your Hackathon on HackerNoon

Two ways to get involved: launch a new hackathon or sponsor an existing one. Both get you direct access to developers who actually read and build.

1. Launch a new Hackathon

Most hackathons fail because nobody sees them. We solve distribution. Launch on a platform where developers are already reading, every single day. That means, instant distribution to 4M+ monthly readers and long-term value since every submission becomes permanent, SEO-optimized content that drives ongoing value.

What You Get

  • Dedicated hackathon website
  • Submission management system
  • Automatic content publication
  • Email marketing to 500K+ subscribers
  • Social media promotion to 1M followers
  • Custom tags & categories
  • Winner announcement support
  • Post-hackathon analytics

2. Sponsor an existing Hackathon

Jump into competitions already running. Your brand gets in front of builders who are actively coding and writing, not just browsing.

What You Get

  • Logo on hackathon landing page
  • Mention in all promotional emails
  • Social media callouts
  • Direct developer engagement
  • Access to quality submissions
  • Brand visibility to 4M+ readers
  • ROI tracking & analytics

**New Licensing Options for Pixel Icon Library: Free, Starter & Pro Plans

\ HackerNoon’s Pixel Icon Library, our growing collection of clean, developer-friendly icons, just got more flexible. Since launch, the Pixel Icon Library has grown to over 11.6K users on Figma, 22.7K downloads on NPM, and nearly 45K total downloads.

The free, attribution-required license isn’t going anywhere. However, many users asked for the option to use icons without attribution or needed clearer commercial licensing for client work.

In response, we launched two new paid plans alongside the existing free option: the Free plan with unlimited use and attribution, the Starter plan with no attribution required for a single project, and the Pro plan with no attribution required for unlimited projects.

The main benefit is simple: no attribution required for paid plans, plus clear commercial licensing terms for professional use.

How to Get Your License

  1. Visit pixeliconlibrary.com/license
  2. Select the plan that's best for you
  3. Complete your purchase on our Services page
  4. Download the full bundle from our Pixel Icon Library

Brand Profiles Get a Visual Upgrade

Brand profiles received a visual refresh. Verified brand accounts now feature a yellow circle around the profile image, making recognition clearer across the platform and helping trusted brands stand out at a glance.
We also improved the writer experience behind the scenes. Writers can now see how many credits they have remaining while working on a draft. In draft settings, simply scroll past the featured image to view your remaining business blogging credits, translation credits, and booster credits in real time.

For Readers

Readers got upgrades too. HackerNoon’s search experience is now cleaner and easier to navigate. The search page - your go-to place to find stories, people, topics, companies, and coins - now highlights nine trending stories at the top, followed by trending companies and coins. Translation filters and trending tags on the left make it easier to navigate by language or topic. See how it looks:

The login and signup pagealso received a refresh, with dynamic visuals that adapt based on the time of day. Because first impressions matter, even at 2am.

Discover HackerNoon’s New Hubs

While we were at it, we built two new corners of the internet that HackerNoon readers will actually want to hang out in.

Explore the internet’s most compelling Turing Tests at turingtest.tech, where readers can discover, evaluate, and challenge AI systems across multiple domains. The hub makes it easier to compare models, test capabilities, and better understand how AI performs in real-world scenarios.
