Coming from an engineering background, a good quality solution to a problem was the only thing that mattered. But then reality kicked in and smacked me in a forehead saying: "You moron, they don't even know your product exists, let alone that they can benefit from it". Some good old advertising could show some results very fast, but I want to talk about the long game — about building a brand. Building a brand often starts when the product is finished, as part of the marketing strategy. The idea here is to start building the brand as soon as you start building the product. But first of all, what is a brand? What is a brand? I will try to answer this question by saying what is a brand. Despite popular belief, a is . Also, colours, fonts, patterns and overall visual is . When people interact with your product, they develop a set of feelings derived from the experiences they had with it. If your product is helpful, they feel grateful. If your product is entertaining, they feel amused. If your product is premium, they will feel confident. Also, if your product is crappy, they will be pissed. A brand is a gut feeling So, a brand is not what you say it is — it is what your customers say about your product. It is how they feel about it. It is your mission statement from the customers perspective. Why is having a brand important? Nowadays, people have too many choices and abundance of similar products in the same category. All these offerings have a similar quality. A similar set of features. Fall in a similar price range. When you take these facts into consideration, beating the competition seems like winning a lottery ticket. So, how to persuade the customers that your product is the best out there? Well, first of all, you should know where does the buying decision come from. It comes from our subconscious mind. And if you build a brand which makes people feel good and confident, you're on a roll. We tend to base our decisions on trust. And that is why building a brand is important. Customer oriented brands (or customer obsessed brands) have a substantial customer relationship history which enables them to influence their minds based on previous experiences. Having a brand long enough builds the trust, and the trust makes buying so much easier. The that I'm referring to consists of and . Word of mouth is like a wildfire, the best marketing you can get. This attracts . more people If you have a range of different products and customers are happy with the ones that they've tried out, there is a big chance that they will try more of your products. This means that they will buy from you. more stuff As I said, there are so many offerings which drive your customers into analysis paralysis. They're over-thinking and over-analysing before making a buying decision. In order to avoid this dreadful feeling, they are likely to stick with the brand they trust and will buy from them for to come. more years If all these ingredients are in place, paying the premium price will not be a problem for your customers. Based on their previous experience and their gut feeling, they will be sure that buying from you is their best choice. The higher price buys them not only the product but also the ease of mind. And that feeling will subconsciously justify buying at a . higher price Branded or Brand-led? Companies which have already established a strong brand enjoy the luxury of being trusted. Sometimes, they can even get away with a crappy product, at the expense of previously earned trust (reliability + delight). Their products are . branded On the other hand, newbies and are faceless, unknown to the general public. They might have a small niche market, but they are far from being a brand. Their products are not branded. But in order to succeed and penetrate their target market, their products have to be . I'm not sure if brand-led is a word, but I'm sure that it's a good compass. Being brand-led means that the product design, product features, customer service and all other aspects of the whole product are focused on that gut feeling that you want your customers to feel. Brand-led thinking from the very beginning of the product development will do good for you. First of all, you will always put yourself in the customers' shoes. As a result, your product will look better in their eyes. Secondly, even though you don't have a strong brand yet, customers can feel when you truly care about them. And that feeling is the closest to the one you want to get. startups brand-led Ok, so how do you integrate this brand-led strategy into your roadmap? Branding as part of your roadmap Most of the product teams are using some to keep track of the tasks and features which they want to implement (might be , , , , etc.). The value that these tools bring to the team is focus and transparency. Here's what I found useful after asking myself the same question. 1. Consider the technology adoption lifecycle When building a new product, you should first know who your customers are. The same applies to branding. A brand is your tone of voice, and when you're speaking to your customers you have to know who they are and what do they expect/need. If you've been living under the rock and haven't read , you should definitely go for it right now. It beautifully describes the stages of the technology adoption. Crossing the Chasm The is a sociological model that describes the adoption or acceptance of a new product or innovation, according to the demographic and psychological characteristics of defined adopter groups. This model consists of five categories: technology adoption lifecycle Innovators, Early adopters, Early majority, Late majority, Laggards. In order to make the most out of this model you should first position your product so that it fits the needs of one of the adopter groups. This is an introspection exercise, where you have to be brutally honest with yourself and find the group that would buy your product. For most startups, innovators are the entry point to the market. As a brand, you are selling a promise. You are selling a hope that will inspire your customers. And in order to do so, you have to get to know them. You have to get familiar with their psychological characteristics. When you form a persona, it will be easier to nail their needs. So here’s a short overview of those five categories… Innovators It is most likely that this group will be the first to try your product out. They are in a constant pursuit for new technology and they will sleep in a tent in front of the store to get a new product first. They have to be on the bleeding edge of the technology, it's in their DNA. We all know somebody that obsessed. Their buying motivation is high, they want to try the product out and see if it can improve their lives or their corporate environment. What kind of brand do they want? Innovators want a unique functionality which will give them some kind of advantage over competitors or peers. It has to have a unique design to make them feel special and to make them stand out from the crowd. After all, they want to brag about having a bleeding edge piece of technology, so make sure that the product feels sophisticated and high quality. Also, you should emphasise that your product is first of a kind out there. Buzzwords are obligatory and they love the ride on the hype train. Early adopters This group is also first to buy. But unlike innovators, this group is highly demanding when it comes to quality. However, early adopters are the least money-sensitive group so the quality demand is somehow justified. As visionaries, they will definitely expect a quantum leap forward in how their lives or businesses improve by using your product. What kind of brand do they want? Early adopters are not necessarily tech-people, but they have a strong understanding of how the technology works. More importantly, they have a firm understanding of the benefits of using a new product. Make sure that you relate benefits of your product to their concerns. They want an innovative product which addresses their pain points by order of magnitude better than the competitive products. Also, make sure that your product can be personalised and custom made to meet their wildest expectations and special requirements. Early majority This group has a moderate buying motivation. They will spend their money only after they see the proof that your product is worth it. However, they are not as demanding as early adopters. They will settle with an incremental improvement as long as it is a good quality product with high reliability. They are hype-resistant and you will have to work hard to persuade them to buy. What kind of brand do they want? Early majority wants a well established and proven product. You should emphasise the references from your previous buyers/segments and let them know that the benefits you are promising are actually in place. Also, you should tell stories about customer experience and how great your customer support is. Your product has to feel robust and high quality since this segment is in for a long run. They will spend their money, but they expect to use the product for a long time. So make sure to stress the practicality and longevity of your product. Late majority This group is comfortable with their current solution to a problem. No matter how hard they work on that solution, they got used to the process. They will not make the transition to a new product until most people made the switch. Actually, they will make the transition when it becomes really inconvenient not to use a new product. What kind of brand do they want? Late majority wants to have a product with the largest installed base. They want to have an high quality support for the product and lots of third-party supporters. They want the product from well-established companies. The product has to be de facto standard in the field. Since the buying power of this group is relatively low, this is rarely an interesting market for tech products. Laggards They will not buy until hell freezes over. I mean, really, they own a flip phone… What kind of brand do they want? Don't even bother… Knowing you market segments will help you decide which message you want to send to your customers. As a brand, you are selling a promise and a hope. Those feelings will inspire your customers and the inspiration will enable them to imagine a better future for themselves. And if you can spark their imagination you will incept the idea of a better future with your product in their hands. 2. Wrap it in a shiny paper The product that you are selling is a generic product. It has all the parts and functionalities that your customers need. But what you want to sell is the whole product. is a generic product augmented by secondary, auxiliary services such as a nice package, polite salesperson, pleasant in-store experience, ease of use, fun on-boarding process and everything else that is required for the user to feel good about putting their money into your pocket. Remember, it's all about the feelings. These are the layers of a whole product, from the branding perspective, which I like to focus on: The whole product Physique Physique is a general appearance of the product. Although I've said that the logo, colours and visual identity is not a brand, it is quite important. Why? Because the appearance of your product is what triggers the emotions of your customers. And to figure out what emotions you want to hit brings us back to the previous consumer model from the technology adoption lifecycle. The package itself is not crucial, but it will bring you a few bonus points. Make sure that you add this task for your designer. Personality You should focus on the messages that you send to your customers. The product you are building should have the same tone of voice as a person which your customers can relate to. This way, they will feel like a part of the tribe. And that feeling, this sense of belonging, builds the trust and makes buying easier. So make sure that you create a character, a persona that reflects your product and enables your customers to relate with that imaginary friend. Culture Personality provides an image of a single figure. Often, a single figure is unable to define the culture of the larger group. To define the tribe which your customers want to be part of, you have to share the core values of that tribe. By sharing these values, you give the consumer a peace of mind or a certainty that you have the same beliefs. The customer accepts the group’s norms, values, and perspectives which makes him a part of the group. And if one of the norms of that group is having your product — everybody will want to have it. Self-image The sense of belonging feels good, but each member of the group is aware of their individualism. This moral stance emphasises the worth of the individual and values independence and self reliance. So make sure that your customers are aware of who they are when using the product. What superpowers can they gain with the product in their hands. Tell them what can be achieved and persuade them that they can do even more. They will feel empowered, inspired and eager to try the product out. 3. Stand out from the crowd As I said, people have too many choices and abundance of similar products in the same category. We know that humans are great at developing filters which will protect them from unwanted noise. In this case, this filter makes us immune to the abundance of choices and we buy what we already know. Also, humans are great at recognising patterns and even better at noticing anomalies in those patterns. And in the highly competitive market, you want to be an anomaly because you want to be noticed. If your competitors zig, you should zag. Don't get me wrong, these anomalies are not necessarily radical, they could be a slight difference which will make you stand out from the crowd. For example, you could be selling bathing suites made out of recycled ocean plastic. The product looks the same as others, the package is the same as others, but what makes you stand out from the crowd is that you are selling a cause. You are selling a promise of a better future. This will break the pattern and you will be noticed. In the highly competitive market, you want to be an anomaly because you want to be noticed As an exercise, you should have the compelling answer to the following questions: , and . If the answer is inspiring and unique, you're on the right path. Who are you what do you do how does it matter 4. Think about the shoppers perspective Imagine yourself in a store, reaching for a brand new product. You've never seen it before. When introduced to a new product, almost every person goes through this steps: Notices the package Asks “what is it?” Wonders “Why should I care?” Wants to be persuaded Needs proof [ ] * Make sure that you address these questions. Especially number 3 because it is supposed to spark some good feelings leading to a compelling reason to buy. Communicating their benefit should be your top priority. The Market Remains Resilient Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

Building Blockroll: The Journey in Six Months. It's been six months since we laid the foundation for , an innovative startup focused on payroll solutions in Africa. Blockroll We started building on December 16th 2022, and it's been grace upon grace. At first, we agreed on a founders' agreement to keep us committed throughout this journey. We talked about our roles in the company, how equity will be split, and how expenses will be tracked and kept. Based on my experience with Content Marketing for a couple of brands like and , I was selected to be the Chief Marketing Officer. Scholaroo Hackernoon Looking back, it has not all been roses. We've had massive challenges, fired a few of the amazing people we hired, and even thought of giving up the whole company. But here we are today. Here are a couple of things that I've learned while building a startup in six months. The best is Number 10! Takeaways: 1. A startup changes you. Success or failure is a very binary decision for startups. Either you achieve product-market fit with your business model and succeed, or you lose steam with time and give up. While this isn't meant to scare you, it's the raw truth. As a person, you'll be stretched far beyond your comfort zone. It has not been an easy ride for me. I was just rounding up my final exams for college when I became the Chief Marketing Officer. With a background in Engineering, planning marketing strategies and creating brand awareness were not part of my course curriculum. Although the experience I've gathered from Content Marketing helped, I had to pick up steam and familiarize myself with startup lingo. I've learned how to design and build a product, how to sell it, where to get the money for it, how to attract and retain great talent, which investors to approach, and what to do when our original plan no longer makes sense. These are the most invaluable skills I've learned. 2. Running a startup with personal challenges is like running with rocks in your shoes. This is so simple that you need someone to help you misunderstand it. Prior to raising funds and making a profit, you will be required to use your own resources, time, and energy to fund your startup. If you haven't settled your finances yet, this would be a serious challenge. I know that this isn't stated enough, but building a startup requires money! While it takes an idea to succeed, it takes money to make that idea a success. Please have a plan to cover your expenses in the first couple of months while running your business. Cynthia McCahon, CEO of Enloop, says that one of the main reasons most small businesses fail is that they . simply run out of cash Creating leverage in the form of seed capital is the best gift you can give yourself while building a startup. 3. Building is hard; Building in Nigeria is harder. Nigeria is a wonderful place to build a startup. But with inconsistent government policies, a lack of basic infrastructure, and a rising cost of living, building a startup here can be a headache. As we say here, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. For Blockroll, this has been quite a challenge. Some of our employees have been arrested due to the stereotyping of young Nigerians in tech. Others have been assaulted and had their properties stolen. Some government policies have been created, and we've had to revamp our whole business model. Building in Nigeria will cost you your passion. You have to put in the work, acquire knowledge as you go, and be prepared for the unexpected because the unexpected always happens here. 4. The right team is critical to your success. \Whether it is your cofounders, investors, lawyers, or employees, surrounding yourself with the right people is a great asset when building a startup. Building connections with mentors and people in your niche can open doors to invaluable opportunities. Apart from investment opportunities, you need to be able to share your struggles and pains with your team. The cohesion between the members of your team needs to be way stronger than your equity. According to King Solomon, he who walks with the wise will be wise himself. Blockroll is not a team; it's a family. While we've had our differences, the vision that binds us together is worth the effort. As a young entrepreneur, you need to cultivate relationships that go beyond mere transactions. These connections can become your biggest support systems. 5. Your belief in what you are selling is crucial. For the customer to actually believe in what you are selling, you have to believe in it yourself. It's easy to spot entrepreneurs who are not totally passionate about what they're selling; don't be among them. Before investing significant time and resources, validate your startup idea by conducting market research, talking to potential customers, and seeking feedback. According to Zig Ziglar, selling is a transference of feelings. Please, if you don't believe in what you're selling, stop deceiving yourself and go sell something else. You must first believe that what you're selling is useful for changing your customer's life. Second, you must believe that your product or service is required by your customers. A huge part of your job is proving that you’re trustworthy and convincing the prospect that your product will solve their problem. gives some great steps to do this. Nutshell 6. Take a while to rest; startups can take a toll on your health. According to the , neglecting self-care is common among entrepreneurs in the early stages of their business—working a day job and cramming the rest into that time once earmarked for rest, fun, or family. It's easy to get so ingrained in growing your startup that you actually forget to focus on your own growth. Remember that neglecting your health will do more harm than good to your business. We're so tired of seeing CEOs make a lot of money but lose their homes, their relationships, and their lives in the process; don't be another one. Spend time with your family while they're alive. Take time to invest in your health by working out, taking breaks, and eating right. Dedicate time to sleeping well. While the pressures of work still surface, dedicating time to those you love is so invaluable to building a startup. 7. Focus on what you can control. While hard work is absolutely necessary to build a startup, remember that there are things you can't control. This is 2023, and we've all been aware of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the advent of the pandemic, more than have been reported, along with more than 6.8 million deaths, according to Human Rights Watch. 750 million cases of COVID-19 Unfortunately, there could be external or internal factors that play a large part in determining how your business runs. You won't have control over a recession, market changes due to new technology, government policies, delays, and more. The key thing for entrepreneurs is to focus more on what they can control. Focus on delivering value to your customers; focus on building a great team; focus on what works; and ignore the rest. Always be on your guard and be prepared to adapt when necessary. 8. Hire with caution. Mark Zuckerberg stated a rule for hiring during the fourth installment of : Q&A with Mark ‘I will hire someone to work directly for me only if I would work for that person in an alternate universe.’ , the CEO of DRubix Group, once told me that you should hire leaders, not experts. Leadership is beyond the skills listed on your curriculum vitae and more about your character. A leader should be selfless, respectful, and put the interests of the team above personal interests. Anyalewechi Precious If you make a mistake with the first ten people you hire for your startup, chances are that it will not survive. Make sure you vet the interests of the people you hire before bringing them on your team. Remember, when everyone on the team is on the same page, the business grows quickly, and competitors don’t stand a chance. But if one person on your team is in the wrong role, communication breaks down, and the vision gets thwarted. Take caution while you hire founders and team members, and your team will be better for it. 9. Don't take forever to launch. Please don't take forever to launch your product. Once you validate the market, create a minimum-viable product and ship it. This is one of the mistakes we made at Blockroll. We focused on adding a lot of features and integrations to help the customer without focusing on what the customer actually wanted. A great way to learn what customers want is to launch quickly, get initial customers, listen to their feedback, and iterate on the solution. Even if your product is far from perfect, still launch it. By taking it to market, you will build momentum for your business and be able to show prospects and investors that you are actively developing it. It’s better to have an imperfect product out in the world that is giving you feedback than none at all. Facebook, Amazon, and Google were far from ; they just kept iterating on the solution till it solved the problem of their audience. Build for a launch instead of building for the future. perfect when they launched 10. Celebrate your small wins. Don't be so achievement-conscious that you forget when your ceilings become your floors. At Blockroll, we had major partnerships in this six-month period. First, we signed a partnership with The Intern Place on March 20, 2023. Then we altered our design to reflect the intention of our brand. Then we incorporated our brand in the United States on April 27th. We then selected the top three contestants for the NODO Awards. I got featured as one of the Top 100 Web3 Frontrunners in Africa. Currently, we've been signing up partnerships and securing funds. It's been a rollercoaster all the way through. And although we are not resting on our oars, the future seems bright for our startup. Thoughtworks’ Technology Radar I always look forward to adding many new “blips” to my list, or seeing which are growing in adoption since you last took a look. Version 27 is out now, and it continues some trends that the radar has been following for a while, such as “platform as a service” or forms of group programming. This round-up is far from comprehensive, but just the blips that appealed to me or that, I thought, might appeal to you. There was announcement after announcement of another ML or AI-based tool that spat out some sort of media after you fed something into it, and we were swamped with thousands of strange-looking images and videos of celebrities. This also means that developers interested in experimenting with ML also have a lot more resources available to them in the shape of data sets and frameworks to use those data sets. Of relevance to experimenting developers is , a field of machine learning enabling a variety of always-on use-cases and targeting battery-operated devices. Continuous Observability Despite being a relatively new term, “observability” has rapidly grown from a loose collection of practices and standards for building a better picture of a running system to become a broader term to mean, well, to mean all sorts of things. The latest area of the developer workflow to receive insights is one that I am surprised took so long, observability for continuous integration and delivery pipelines. While CI and CD certainly bring benefits, processes frequently go wrong with very little insight into what until you try, try again. Now, a handful of existing observability vendors and open-source projects are bringing tracing-style visualizations of continuous processes to hopefully help you debug quite what was going on. Software Bill of Materials As developers lean increasingly on semi-anonymous containers and packages for their work, those focused on security and legalities looked on and wondered, “do we trust this?”. This concern has led to a rush to standardize and normalize (in enterprise, especially) a “software bill of materials”, often referred to by the comical acronym, SBOMs. While, in theory, “anyone” can dig into an open-source project and see what its components are, this is generally easier said than done and isn’t possible with closed-source projects at all. Recent high-profile vulnerabilities in software revealed how small dependencies can bring such large problems. While SBOMs could go a long way to help, I wonder how many companies will want to reveal their inner workings and be honest about them. Sustainable Coding This is a topic that I was inspired to cover myself after speaking with someone from Thoughtworks about their Carbon cloud footprint tool. The tendency to endlessly throw new frameworks, tools, and cloud frameworks at a problem has led to many of us forgetting that all of these lines of code actually run somewhere on something. And that leads to carbon emissions. Water motivated by altruistic reasons or financial, and an ecumenic downturn leads to cost savings, this is a topic more are talking and thinking about. Bun Again, variety isn’t a bad thing. Bun is written in , which I had never heard of before, and it claims to be a “drop-in” C/C++ replacement. Zig Which leads nicely to… C+++ If Zig, Rust, and other languages are anything to go by, numerous people feel that C++ needs a more modern replacement. Google has thrown another option into the list of contenders with . Carbon The language is still in experimental stages but claims to be easier to understand and onboard with. Google has a tendency to spin up many experimental projects and then dump them again, so Thoughtworks’ suggestion is currently “wait and see”.
