To quote Les Borsai, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Wave Financial, “[when] You take a look at the art world, an artist gives up half of what he earns to a gallery in a lot of cases, and collectors at that gallery, or the gallery itself, become the market makers. They’re paying for the art and setting the prices.” Establishing proof of ownership presents a challenge. Provenance documents like gallery receipts or signed authenticity statements can be falsified. Many do not even realize what qualifies as an actual provenance document or take advantage of regulation laxity for malicious purposes. Artists have long lamented how easy it is for their works to quickly change hands using large sums of money, with no benefit to their creator. Most art is sold anonymously, for cash, leaving no trace for the artist to follow if they tried. The DeFi movement saw this problem and has created a solution: NFTs. NFTs are tokens that hold unique digital identifiers like cryptocurrency and exist on a blockchain. When you purchase an NFT, you are the official owner of a distinctive asset. They offer flashy features like allowing the artist to “sign” their name in the metadata, or code in royalties to be paid to the original artist every time the token is traded or sold. The transparency is written into the code also allows the original artist to track each piece they create. This kind of transparency and security has never existed for artists or collectors. The great thing about NFT marketplaces is that they were created to benefit artists, not the art dealers. Borsai adds, “Very few assets can be created that an artist can own outright, and this is one of them. If an artist decides he wants to create art and put it out there in the form of an NFT, he or she gets to keep that money… If we can create markets around local artists and accelerate that community and that economy, and artists can make more money, I think that’s a good thing.” [in a recent Cryptonized! According to Les Borsai, “When you talk about a print of a print of a print, that really isn’t anything different than what traditional markets are. So there’s licensed versions of these prints that sell for less money, because they’re not a part of the series. NFT marketplaces are exploding in worth, having grown to over two billion dollars in the first quarter of 2021, benefiting artists and collectors alike. Anyone with a computer and an internet connection can browse NFT marketplaces and find art that fits their interests and style. Mainstream artists like Grimes and Phillip Colbert are joining the movement, creating their own NFTs. Damien Hirst has even started his own “Currency Project,” which gives the buyer the choice of a high-resolution digital photograph of the painting or the physical copy itself. This new piece of the DeFi movement gives artists and buyers freedom never before afforded to them, and there are no limits to where it can go.

For a long time, crypto enthusiasts around the world have touted Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a safe haven for investors in times of economic trouble. The problem with that assertion, of course, is that Bitcoin (the granddaddy of cryptocurrencies) was created in part as a reaction to the 2008 global financial crisis. Since then, cryptocurrencies haven't had to ride out any form of protracted economic trouble. In other words, the safe heaven designation was theoretical at best. Then came the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The spreading disease and the economic fallout it is creating sent shockwaves through economic markets all around the globe. It is, in effect, a trial by fire for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which are now going through an economic contraction that's even more severe than the one that prompted their creation in the first place. So, the question now is: how's the market responding? The answer, as you might expect, is complex. Here's a look at what's been going on and what conclusions we can draw from the data. According to data provided by the major , what happened in early March was nothing short of a financial debacle. It sounded like he was living the dream. “But if I lose my job,” he admitted in the story, “I’d lose all of that.” He was making $500,000 / yr, and he was also spending close to $500,000 / yr. By definition, he was not rich. Actually, he was quite poor — no savings to call his own. The older I get, the more I realize people’s definition of “wealth” is wrong. Making money is easy. Once you learn how value is exchanged, bringing in money isn’t the challenging part. The challenge comes in making more than you’re used to, but continuing to live as you are. Continuing to keep your overhead lean. Continuing to practice good money habits. Continuing to put money into investment vehicles.Continuing to live as if nothing has really changed about your income status — except for how much money you’re able to save. management Most people fail with this. The majority, actually. Your question shouldn’t be, “How do I become rich?” Your question should be, “How can I spend less — so that I can save more?” A lot of people can solve for the part. In a capitalist society, it’s not rocket science. making money But not very many people master the second part, which is the saving. One of the most repeated questions I get is: how do I evaluate whether I should join an early seed-stage startup? Embarking on a journey with a startup is akin to taking a leap of faith. While there's no guarantee of success, conducting due diligence can significantly mitigate risks. For a quick background, the first startup I joined after my undergrad, MIME360, was acquired by Flipkart to build out its digital store. The four years I worked at Flipkart, it went through a hyper-growth phase to become India's biggest eCommerce company. After doing my Masters in Computer Science from Columbia University, I was fortunate to find another set of high performers with TellApart. TellApart ended up being Twitter's biggest acquisition, and I was fortunate to be part of that journey too. After spending 6 years building ad products at Twitter, I wanted to get back to early-stage companies, which led me to join Frec as a founding engineer. Frec is a fintech startup, democratizing complex financial instruments which were previously accessible to a wealthy few. Unlike MIME360 and TellApart, where I was very early in my career and also just at the right place at the right time, Frec was a very intentional decision. I had worked with some of the other founding engineers before, so I was confident the team was capable of executing. When I spoke to Mo Al Adham, the founder of Frec, his thoughts about the team and product-market fit complimented mine, and I was convinced I was making the right decision. Given my prior experience with small and medium-sized start-ups, some of my friends/colleagues reach out to me to help evaluate a startup they’re considering joining. Joining a new company is a big step, both personally and professionally. Making an informed decision is much easier with public companies since a lot of resources/metrics that you might need are already available like revenue growth, median salary for your role, opinion of current and past employees, etc. Such data is generally not available for most startups, especially the early-stage ones (pre-series B) which makes it quite a risky prospect. We know start-ups are inherently hard, and while there is no guarantee of success, you can definitely mitigate some risk by doing your own due diligence. Most start-ups are aware of this and are willing to share information with potential employees within reasonable limits. It's essential to remember that joining a startup is not just about being hired; it's a mutual exploration where you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. Before saying yes to joining a startup, it's crucial to have a clear understanding of what you aim to gain from the experience. With the hope that it can help others as well, I am sharing some of the things I considered when making my decision to join Frec. Because it’s going against the grain. In most societies, being rich is seen as bad, reflected in countless sayings and stereotypes about the corrupting nature of wealth. They’re essentially stories people tell themselves about why they can’t achieve financial success when in reality it’s the societal mechanism preventing them from doing so. When someone (unconsciously) feels like they shouldn’t be wealthy because their tribe says so, they might not want others to succeed either, leading them to spread narratives that discourage pursuing wealth. Over time, these narratives become deeply ingrained, acting as yet another form of social control. Society doesn’t need to manipulate, peer pressure and societal expectations does. shouldn’t . . I observe society both hate and love business people. We love a good rags-to-riches story as long as the person is perceived as likeable (i.e. Michael Jordan). But generally, nobody wants someone they know to get (much) richer than them because it raises a question of status. If two people start out in a similar social class and one becomes much (a relative term) richer, the other feels like they did something wrong. Rather, that something’s wrong with them . They both, after all, had similar circumstances so how come he didn’t achieve what his fellow class member did? Hard work is one of the multitude of possible answers, but the important thing is why the question arises in the first place. It’s because society, especially capitalist society, is built on competition through comparison. Don’t get me wrong, I love competition but I’m not a fan of comparison. Essentially, the more you’re willing to challenge societal norms and accept both social and financial risks, the greater your potential rewards.
