If you are a backend developer, Caching is a go-to solution whenever you need to speed up your web application. However, there’s a lot about Caching that goes missing when deciding the right Caching strategy for your web application. Hence, in this article, we will discuss the various Caching strategies available and how to choose the right one for your use case. What is Caching? In simpler terms, Caching is a buffering technique where we store the frequently accessed data in temporary memory or space to make it readily available and reduce the workload for our application, server, or database. It can be implemented on different levels in a web application depending on the use case. Caching at Different Levels in a Web Application Caching happens at different levels in a web application such as the following: Edge Caching or CDN(Content Delivery Network) A CDN is used to cache static assets(such as images, videos, or webpages) in geographically distributed servers such that it can send the content faster to the end user using the cache. Consider a CDN to be a grocery store chain: instead of traveling hundreds of kilometers to fields where food is grown, buyers go to their local grocery store, which still needs some travel but is considerably closer. Grocery shopping takes minutes rather than days since grocery shops stock food from distant farms. Similarly, CDN caches 'stock' the content that appears on the Internet, allowing webpages to load significantly faster. When a user uses a CDN to request any content from a website, the CDN retrieves the content from an origin server and keeps a copy of the content for future requests. The cached content is kept in the CDN cache as long as users continue to access it. Database Caching Database Caching refers to the native smart caching algorithms used by any database to optimize reads and writes. The cache, in this case, can live in several areas including the database, the application, or as a standalone layer. Database Caching can be used with all types of data stores, including NoSQL databases as well as relational databases such as SQL server - MySQL or MariaDB, etc. It also works well with many data platforms such as AWS and Microsoft Azure. Browser Caching or Client Side Caching Browsers or clients store the static assets based on the cache expiry headers. The HTTP cache headers specify how long the browser can fulfill subsequent cache responses for the requested web content. Also, browsers can cache the response for GET requests to avoid unnecessary data calls. Server Side Caching Server Caching is the most commonly known and used caching mechanism where the data is cached in a server application. Here things depend a lot on the business needs, it is highly optimized for applications with fewer concurrent users. Server-side web caching often involves using a web proxy to hold web responses from the web servers in front of which it resides, significantly lowering their load and latency. These caches are implemented by the site administrators and act as an intermediate agent between the browser and the origin servers. Another form of Server-side Caching is by utilizing the key-value stores such as Memcached and Redis. In contrast, to reverse proxies, which merely cache the HTTP response to a specific HTTP request, any web content needed by the application developer may be cached using a key/value object storage. The web content is often fetched using an application code or an application framework that may exploit the In-Memory data storage. Another advantage of employing key/value stores for online caching is that they are frequently used to store web sessions and other cached material. This gives a unified solution for a variety of application situations. Why do we need Caching? There are several benefits of caching as mentioned below: Improved Application Performance As we discussed earlier, Cache is a high-speed data storage layer that stores a subset of data that is frequently accessed and is typically transient, so that future requests are served faster than accessing the original storage location. Thus, Caching allows for to efficient reuse of previously accessed or computed data. Hence, the read/write operation of data is reduced by a large magnitude and helps to improve the overall performance of the application. Reduce the Database Cost A single cache instance can provide hundreds of thousands of Input/Output operations per second, thus driving the total cost down by reducing the number of database instances required. Hence, the cost savings can be significant if the storage charges are per throughput. Reduce the Load on the Backend Caching can effectively reduce the load on the backend server and save it from slower performance, by redirecting the specific parts of the read load from the backend database to the in-memory caching layer. It can save the system from crashing at times of traffic overload or spike. Predictable Performance A common challenge with modern applications is when it comes to dealing with spikes in application usage. For example - spike on social media applications during a worldwide tech event, a cricket match or an election day, or a festive sale on an eCommerce website, etc. Increased load on the application could result in latency to get data, thus making the performance as well as the user experience unpredictable. Although, by using a high throughput in-memory cache, we can mitigate this problem to a large extent. Eliminate Database Hotspots A small subset of data, such as a celebrity profile or popular product, is likely to be retrieved more frequently than the remainder in many applications. This can cause hotspots in your database and necessitate overprovisioning of database resources based on throughput requirements for the most frequently used data. Storing common keys in memory reduces the need to overprovision while providing fast and predictable performance for the most frequently accessed data. A single distributed side-cache machine may serve hundreds of thousands of requests per second. Having discussed the benefits of caching, let’s dive into the caching strategies with some real-world use cases. In this article, we will mainly focus on server-side caching strategies. 5 Different Types of Server Caching Strategies Cache Aside In this caching strategy, the cache is logically placed aside and the application directly communicates with the database or the cache to know if the requested information is present or not. Firstly the application checks with the cache, if the information is found, it reads and returns the data, and it is known as a otherwise if the information is not found, it is known as a , in which case, the application queries the database to read the information and returns the requested data to the client, and then also stores it into the cache for future use. cache hit cache miss It is essentially beneficial in use cases that are read-heavy. In this case, the cache is logically between the application and the database. Hence, if a client requests any information, the application does not need to check with the cache for the availability of the information as the cache already has the information, and thus, it is directly retrieved from the cache and served to the client. However, it increases the latency of a write operation. But if paired with another caching strategy called read-through cache, we can ensure consistency of data. Read-Through Cache In this caching strategy, the cache sits in line with the database such that any time there’s a cache miss( data is not found in the cache), the missing data is populated from the database and gets returned to the client. As you might have guessed, it works best for ready-heavy applications such that the same set of information is requested again and again. For instance, a news website would be serving the same stories for a day over and over. The downside of this strategy is if the data is requested for the first time, it is always a cache miss, and thereby it will be slower than a normal request. Write-Back In this caching strategy, whenever there is a write operation, the application writes the information to the cache that immediately acknowledges the changes and after some delay, it writes back the data to the database. It is also known as the Write-behind caching strategy. It is a good caching strategy for applications that are heavy on write operations for improving the write performance of the application. It can also help accommodate moderate database downtimes and failures that can happen in instances. It can also work well when paired with a read-through cache. Moreover, it can further reduce the write workload on the database if batching is supported. However, the downside is that if there is a cache failure, the data might get lost forever. In most relational databases, the write-back caching mechanism is enabled by default. Write-Around In this case, the data is directly written to the database and only the data which is read is stored in the cache. It can be combined with the read-through cache and could be a good choice in situations where the data is written once and is read only a few times. Internet connectivity is important because it provides educational and social benefits for people. Unfortunately, these positive attributes are counterbalanced by potentially dangerous consequences. Alongside improving communication and democratizing access to information, the internet lets people conceal themselves behind a mask of anonymity. It creates a whole new set of risks for children – and often adults too. I still remember an incident in 2017 when news came up about a young mom who committed suicide due to cruel trolling online. And guess what most of those troll accounts were impersonating and fake.  A that 1 of 4 people using online social media is a victim of trolls. And these are just stats for famous social media. Trolls on other online communities like gaming communities are another story. survey found Fake and bot accounts on social networks are not only responsible for harassment, cyberbullying, spreading fake news, and spamming but also for creating fake propaganda against organizations and governments all around the world. In the run-up to the 2018 midterms in the United States, “bots were used to disenfranchise voters, harass activists, and attack journalists,” says Sam Woolley, the director of the digital lab at the Institute for the Future. “But at a fundamental level, Facebook and Twitter are disincentivized from doing anything about it”. So the questions that I will try to find answers to in this article are How do these fake accounts easily get away? What are big social media platforms doing to mitigate fake accounts (if they are doing)? What’s stopping them from proper actions? and in the end, we will discuss possible solutions to deal with fake accounts once and for all. Let’s start with the first question. Why do These Accounts Get Away so Easily? There are people and institutes online that preach online safety and how you should deal with these issues. Some will tell you not to give a f***. Others will emphasize reporting fake accounts. to remove 4.5 billion fake accounts in 2020. But why should social media platforms allocate these resources? Before the 2018 mid-terms, the companies had no incentive to put in the effort and resources. However, after the issue became big, it has become inevitable for the companies to improve the health of the platforms. While we have looked at the issues with this approach of identifying and dealing with fake accounts, everyone might be thinking if this isn’t a good approach then what alternative approach do we have? So What is the solution? While working on this article, I did a lot of research on potential solutions, and the abstract of all this research is Accountability. You see when someone creates a fake account impersonating someone else, there isn’t anything at stake for the impersonator. Maximum punishment (a harsh word but I find it most suitable here) is that the account will be banned. And they can easily create another account afterward. So, the point of all this is that online platforms need a system that will hold impersonators accountable in some way or other. Holding them accountable doesn’t mean sending them to jail just for creating a fake account. That isn’t possible because this will require the involvement and consent of all the governments to pass laws. However, a punishment like banning the user from the platform for a certain amount of time depending on the severity of the misconduct is doable. In simple words, a system where fake accounts will not only be deleted but the person creating them will be banned from using the platform. This is only possible if the platforms know who’s signing up. There are multiple ways to do so. Let’s discuss some of them here: KYC Using Identity Documents When talking about identification first thing that comes to mind is KYC through ID documents. After all, banks use this system. For those who don’t know what KYC is . However, there are some issues with using Govt issued IDs. Firstly, they could be forged easily. Secondly, most Govts will never allow a private firm to have citizens' data. Most people online don’t want to reveal their real IDs, fearing that this identification might be used against them by companies or that hackers could exploit their data. Also, online platforms could not bear the expense of verifying the identity of each user. There’s a long tradition in Eastern culture at least (I’m from Vietnam) of people being wary of Western meds (and just in general, western…shall I say, neo-colonialism and imposition of culture). Then there’s a lot of literature that’s credible on how much money there is to be made in the pharmaceutical industry. It is absolutely heart-breaking/unfortunate timing that all these long-holding, healthy even, skepticism, comes to a climax with the pandemic, and a lot of bogart pseudoscience started circulating, giving rights to just irrational outrage and eventual tragedies that shouldn’t have to happen. And here we are…. So in short, I agree with Sara Pinto that yes, vaccines have saved and will continue to save so many lives and yet will still remain to be controversial, unfortunately. Government-mandated vaccines only work if you trust your government. If you lived in North Korea or Russia would you just as easily trust what needles you need to get? I've gotten vaccinated because I believe in medical science and the effectiveness of vaccines, but I agree this isn't such a black and white issue. Yet most people in my country that I see that are against the vaccine think that it is a governmental scheme to put a chip on them and control them. At least, that is the most extreme mentality that surfaces on social media and television. Then, of course, we have people that don't want to be vaccinated because they're worried that there aren't enough studies, which I get. Besides, I don't think you should make vaccination mandatory. However, there are a lot of vaccines we're administrated early on as babies, without which we would be way more vulnerable and would get diseases that are almost "eradicated." Yet, my trust in this covid vaccine, for instance, is so strong because it is a drug approved in a lot of different countries and based on science. The process was fast, yes, but that's because there was an urgency to try and get the pandemic under control. Obviously, the first company to get a vaccine approved makes the most money, but there's still a scientific base behind it. As for other vaccines in countries with dubious governments, I get the distrust. Suppose your government is the first to attack its people, then I'd be suspicious too. I saw this video the other day that explained how it can harm the way you go about your day: imagine that the first thing you do once you wake up is open a social media app; this will spike your levels of oxytocin early in the day; obviously, you can't keep them at that high level throughout the day, so once get to your job or school, which doesn't spike your oxytocin, you'll automatically feel demotivated and it will be harder to start your chores as you'll be craving the oxytocin that you know is provided by social media. Consciousness helped us switch from perception to conceptualization mode, it brought a lot of benefits but on the other hand, it opened the door to something not that great. Mental disorders, social and economic issues, social control, biological mortality, etc...are the consequences of this step between automatic modes and superhuman mode. So we are kind of in between two mentalities, an old one that disappeared and a new one we could reach if we can make it through the coming few decades. Examples would be roads and bridges, or universal healthcare. I would say public health is big enough of a challenge that it should be categorized in the same vein, and unfortunately, government mandates are probably the only tool at anyone's disposal that could swiftly stop the spread and hence the deaths. The question is how we prevent the abuse and this bleeding onto other aspects of private life…such as, oops, abortion! (I'm being spicy today) I feel for the actual benevolent policymakers in this case. How can you prevent so many lives lost while not invading personal liberty? Governments don't create anything, they are a man in the middle. Even border security and police would work better if they were private. So when I give up on my privacy I am giving them more information that actually will be used against me and my people. A very nice PDF from the John Hopkins University was released in 2017 and we see in it how what is happening now is just what was planned decades ago. The book is called SPARS PANDEMIC. Many other studies have been done about how we would react to a C19 like stuff. Government is not the answer, it's just an illusion. A very important point in my opinion before talking about a government is what does it mean government? How do we define it? What other forms of societies can be built? What about a society where every individual is mature and perfectly responsible? Would these societies need a group of guys running other's life (let's call an elected gov)? Before anxiety was a necessary mechanism for survival, the same goes for fear. However, since our everyday struggles are on that level anymore, we transported them towards the immaterial and psychological. Marketing uses these new fears - fear of not fitting in, not fulfilling your dreams, being judged, our insecurities - and throws them back at us, offering temporary solutions. It's that old tale: the greater good vs. the individual choice. On the one hand, we want to respect everyone's individuality and preferences. But, on the other hand, what if someone's choice endangers the collective. You can't support one side of this exclusively without being extremist and jeopardizing the other side. It's tricky. The only way is following an in-between path, maintaining the equilibrium. I think that this is what we're trying to do with the vaccine overall. Then as in a society, individuals have different ways of living we could set rules to have an organized society, kind of etiquette. Individuals don't tend to prefer chaos. When a society offers enough stability to its individuals what happens is that the society gets safe as humans are not by nature into being violent (The majority believes the opposite). In a free society as people are not limited by gov intervention, we would have so much value created that even crime would not be profitable. In a society where force is forbidden, those using it would lose. We have been following Plato's philosophy for the last 2500 years and this philosophy (see it as an OS) has deep dangerous flaws. It does bring me to another point: resources. How would we manage them? We've seen how crazy we, humankind, can get when facing a resource shortage. Take the pandemic, for instance.
