Hello there! My name is Natalie, and I’m currently working as a content specialist and strategist at OKX Chain. (Crypto and Blockchain). As a content strategist, my role involves developing and executing a content strategy that aligns with the company's business objectives and target audience. I research industry trends and developments, identify key topics and themes, and develop a content calendar that supports the company's marketing and communication goals. Ultimately, I am involved in building the brand and growing its business by creating compelling, informative content that resonates with its target audience. Why did you choose this field in the first place? I do not have any prior knowledge in tech or finance, but I was interested in this “magic internet money”. I found it extremely difficult, but I decided to write about my experience trying out different protocols, tools, etc., and found that people were interested in what I had to say. I chose this field because it welcomed me and gave me opportunities I would not have in traditional industries. What tech are you most excited/passionate about right now and why? AI in general and its impact on work is something that I am both excited about and a little scared by. As a content strategist, using tools like ChatGPT has spearheaded my productivity and taught me so much about various topics. Of course, not everything is accurate, so due diligence still needs to be done-but thinking of the possibilities of automation is really exciting What tech are you most worried about right now and why? AI only because I’ve seen how certain jobs may lose their value. Even if we were to learn to use AI in our favor, we cannot deny that it may diminish our worth from a capitalistic perspective. Just like how computers are cheaper today, basic digital literacy dictates our worth in each current day and age. As the tech advances, certain jobs will get phased out. What are your hobbies and interests outside of tech? I enjoy pole dancing and art! I go for lessons and have brunch with the girls after! Let's talk about breaking the glass ceiling. What were the biggest challenges you faced as a woman in tech, and how did you deal with them? As much as we are all about #girlpower, we have to acknowledge that for change to happen, one needs to be in a position of power. To be in a position of power, sometimes we have to play the game. As far as the patriarchy goes, we need to know the rules so we can play the game in our favor. The best way is to get men to champion you. Men who are your allies can help amplify women's voices, acknowledge their experiences – and take on the role of educating other men – in a way that inspires trust and respect; Instead of being angry at men (this does not solve anything), I read The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love by Bell Hooks- it taught me to readjust my perspective and think of ways women can help men reclaim the best part of themselves by not enabling toxic masculinity. This essentially gets men on our side which in turn encourages them to openly show their allyship. Any questionable misogynistic story/situation you faced/handled, and you want to share with the HackerNoon Fam? Oh, where do we begin…welcome to crypto, I guess? Specifically for Crypto, misogyny is perpetuated because, to a certain extent, it is rewarded. To be crude, sex sells. By tapping into concepts like the male gaze, women have been financially rewarded. Due to how common this is, there have been instances where men feel like it is okay to speak to women with innuendo weaved in, asking directly for sex, etc. The guardrails for this industry are not fully up, so during the start when people were networking and promoting, you see quite a bit of toxicity behind the scenes. There have been men hitting on women and assuming that any one part of the community would be open to engaging in certain activities that may be considered NSFW. Harassment is not uncommon. Personally, I have been to many events and had men ask me if I did OnlyFans/had an NFT after the popularity of IreneDao. A compliment would have sufficed, but they felt the need to let me know that they were sexualizing me. I felt powerless and a little bit sad, but who do you complain to? When this happens, it is easier to laugh it off, but standing your ground is important when you’re in an industry that undermines you. What was the biggest setback/failure that you faced, and how did you manage it? I think getting rejected numerous times was quite detrimental to my self-esteem. I rejected corporate entirely and wanted to freelance because at least I could rely on myself. I decided to put myself out there by writing, it was really just for my own records because I really liked writing and sharing my thoughts. True enough, it led me to network with people in crypto, publishing my articles in crypto publications, meeting different people who wanted me to write for them, and of course, meeting my future colleagues at a networking event. I overcame the setback by creating opportunities instead of waiting for opportunities. What's your biggest achievement that you're really proud of? I am proud of myself for acknowledging where I fall short and constantly improving my craft. In your opinion, why do we see this huge gender gap in the tech industry, and how can we reduce it? Get more girls in STEM, and encourage those who aren’t ready to take the leap and explore alternatives. I still feel imposter syndrome when I call myself a woman in tech- but I deserve to take up space in this arena as much as anyone else. The role content plays in communicating, aggregating, and dissecting information is instrumental to education. Education is key to mass adoption, and there is much opportunity for women to be in tech- even if they are not exactly “technically trained”. Besides, this foot in the door can give women a chance to get technically trained should they want to. Who is your tech idol? Why? Bumble CEO, ! What's especially inspiring about Herd is that she's been able to disrupt the male-dominated dating app industry with a female-focused app that gives women the power to make the first move. Whitney Wolfe Herd It's amazing to see how Herd's vision has revolutionized the way people approach online dating. Bumble is also known to help girls find long-lasting female friendships, I really love that aspect. Do you have any advice for aspiring girls who want to join the field? The most important thing is to just network, apply and try even if you feel underqualified. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so take the shot because you’ll never know where it might land.

A NIMBLE BORROWER Speaking of borrowing at the banks reminds me of one of the most strenuous financial efforts I ever made. We had to raise the money to accept an offer for a large business. It required many hundreds of thousands of dollars—and in cash—securities would not answer. I received the message at about noon and had to get off on the three-o'clock train. I drove from bank to bank, asking each president or cashier, whomever I could find first, to get ready for me all the funds he could possibly lay hands on. I told them I would be back to get the money later. I rounded up all of our banks in the city, and made a second journey to get the money, and kept going until I secured the necessary amount. With this I was off on the three-o'clock train, and closed the transaction. In these early days I was a good deal of a traveller, visiting our plants, making new connections, seeing people, arranging plans to extend our business—and it often called for very rapid work. A NIMBLE BORROWER

Smart House Alarm with a Pi: The Dumb Doorbell For some reason last year I decided it would be a good idea to build a smart home alarm system using a Raspberry Pi, part of the reason for this was the ease of integration into my existing smart lights but also because it would allow me to learn more about electronics.  As a result, this is my venture into the world of Raspberry Pi's, electronics, GPIOs and software programming, I will of course, also include a nice sprinkling of frustration, name calling and hopefully some nice flashy lights. The first stop on this not so magical tour is the humble doorbell, I'm not going to add cameras or intercoms yet as this is a planned improvement for the future, plus it will serve as a good learning curve for me. I should note that I currently have 4 Raspberry Pi's in use around my home with a Pi Zero being the latest addition, I'm also currently using a recent version of openhab (https://www.openhab.org) that is setup to control my lights. The basic doorbell is just a push button switch making my first project relatively easy to achieve, to start with, I created the following simple circuit using falstad’s circuit simulator ( ) that would pull the GPIO high. This means that when the switch is closed (doorbell is pressed) the GPIO pin is presented with a voltage of more than 2 volts, thus causing the pin to read a high state. https://www.falstad.com/circuit/ Note: The pin numbers listed in the image above are physical board numbers Next I wired up the circuit on a breadboard and connected a spare Raspberry Pi that I had laying about, I then set about checking that I could actually read the GPIO state using these simple bash commands. cat /sys/class/gpio/gpio17/value echo "17" > /sys/class/gpio/ export echo "in" > /sys/class/gpio/gpio17/direction The commands listed export the GPIO pin to be in a read state, in this case pin 17 (I use BCM numbering for all source code), then setting the direction in or out (read or write respectively) and finally by reading the value using the cat command. Once reading of the pin state had been verified and after checking that I was able to detect the pin did in fact change state, I set about writing the following python script which waits for a specific GPIO pin to be pulled high (has over 2 volts readable) before calling the http post request. The script is simple and most importantly it works, as such it became an important tool during my testing. But first was the task of getting the excellent raspberry-gpio-python ( ) project installed, created by croston it is an absolute breeze to use.  Luckily, it is also easy to setup as long as you install the correct packages first, so without further ado I present the 2 commands needed to install the GPIO module: https://sourceforge.net/projects/raspberry-gpio-python/ sudo pip3 install RPi.GPIO==0.7 requests==2.2 sudo apt-get install python3-pip python3-setuptools python3-wheel python3-dev The modules should install without error, and as can be seen from the script below both "input_pin" and "url" can be changed to reflect the gpio pin connected on the Pi and also the website address to call when the pin is triggered GPIO.setmode(GPIO.BCM)
GPIO.setup(input_pin, GPIO.IN, pull_up_down = GPIO.PUD_DOWN) GPIO.cleanup() #!/usr/bin/python3 import requests import RPi.GPIO as GPIO input_pin = 17 url = 'http://example.com/api/doorbell' def button_press ( channel ): state = GPIO. input (channel) if state == 1 : req = requests.post(url, data = "on" , headers = { "Content-type" : "text/plain" , "Accept-Encoding" : "" }) return GPIO.add_event_detect(input_pin, GPIO.BOTH, callback = button_press, bouncetime = 1 ) try : while True : sleep( 1 ); finally : Saving the script as ~/doorbell.py and making it executable with chmod +x ~/doorbell.py Allowed me to run the script directly, now that the wiring on my Pi was tested and the script working to a satisfactory level I began the process of making the script into a service by copying the file to the /usr/local/bin folder with the command: sudo cp ~/doorbell.py /usr/ local /bin/ Copying the file like this places it in a location that is accessible to systemd.  I then set about creating the required systemd service file with the following contents Description=doorbell service

WantedBy=multi-user.target [Unit] saving the file as /etc/systemd/service/doorbell.service I simply had to enable and start the service with sudo systemctl enable --now doorbell.service The next step was to clip the case back on the Pi and attach the breadboard to the Pi case, using elastic bands to hold the breadboard in place I set up the Pi in a convenient position and wired in my doorbell, unfortunately the use of a camera eluded me at this point so no pictures were taken during these steps, instead you will have to use your imagination to decide what it looked like. After checking for errors I quickly ran outside to make sure that the doorbell did indeed work as I was expecting. Note: This step would have been a great achievement but in my haste I neglected to setup the trigger and response actions in my home controller software (openHAB) With the response actions finally setup I had a working doorbell that flashed the living room lights when pressed, albeit with a slight delay of around 2 seconds. I tidied up the cabling and secured the Pi in its new location near the door then sat back and waited for a valid press of the doorbell. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view it was only around an hour that had passed before the lights flashed in my living room signalling that the button had been pressed. I eagerly jumped up and checked outside to see who was at the door and was surprised to find that the space in front of the door was empty, slightly confused I went and sat back down when about two minutes later the lights flashed again. Realising that it was probably an issue with my dodgy wiring I rechecked all the cables again making sure that the connections to the doorbell and back to the breadboard were good, at this point I also connected to the Pi from my laptop using SSH so I could monitor the state of the pin as the trigger fired. To assist with the debugging process I added a few print statements to the python code to display the state of the pin and to tell me when the URL request was sent, restarting the service I monitored it using sudo journalctl -f --unit=doorbell I then sat back and waited for my phantom trigger to fire again, but after waiting for most of the day I finally gave up watching the pin and shutdown down my laptop. That evening whilst watching TV the lights flashed, deciding that this definitely wasn't going to be an easy fix I shutdown the Pi until I would have more time to look at it. Plenty of research ensured over the preceding few days and it all seemed to point to radio signals causing the interference, from what I was reading the recommended solution was to either; add another resistor to the circuit or introduce a capacitor both of which would reduce the false triggers. After carefully weighing up the options I decided on the resistor (I didn't have a capacitor to hand so couldn't use that option anyway). Following the recommendation of the internet at large I added another resistor to the circuit and after two failed attempts with different value resistors I finally chose one that was large enough to stop the interference, thus giving me a fully working doorbell that looked something like the circuit image below. The doorbell stayed up for around two weeks and I never received a phantom trigger but as will probably become a common theme I did have other issues. In fact this project had two issues one was with timing, which unluckily for me raised its ugly head once I added sound to the bell event.  What I discovered in this instance was that the sound played as soon as the button event was received and if you pressed the button two or three times in quick succession the music would play over the top of the already playing tune, this sounded horrible at worst and had a weird sounding echo at its best, this definitely needed fixing! Further to this I was also experiencing issues with the WiFi connection in my house which caused the wireless connection to drop and for some reason it would not automatically reconnect, the easy solution was to restart the Pi from the main plug but again this was not ideal as I wasn't around all the time during the day and night to restart the Pi. As it turned out, fixing the WiFi disconnection issue was relatively easy as I was able to monitor the connection and restart the Pi through a bash script that looks like the below with a simple service file that was similar to the one above. sleep 10m curl --silent http://example.com/index.html > /dev/null; sleep 5m #!/bin/bash echo "allowing network to activate" while true ; do echo "checking network status" if [[ $? == 0 ]]; then else echo "network lost, restarting! reboot fi done Note: I have recently reinstalled Raspbian on this Pi and since the reinstall the WiFi connection has had much better stability. In the previous python script the "button_press" function is called over and over again all the time the button is being held down, so to fix the timing issue I added a simple sleep delay with a countdown that only checks the pin state when the countdown has expired. Once the doorbell is pressed the countdown is reset back to 5 and then it is reduced by one every second, when the countdown hits 0 the pin state is checked again if the pin is still being held high then the address pointed to by "url" is called and the countdown is set back to 5 again. Thus the cycle continues,  the script below explains it much better than I ever could. Today, businesses of every kind have access to software technology that enables them to provide products and services to their customers that might have been impossible just ten years ago. Consider Elon Musk. He was able to go head-to-head with long- established auto manufacturers because banging tin is no longer what building cars is all about. Automobile manufacturing is much more technology than metal these days. Now he has his sights set on space — also about software. How about your home mortgage? Before 2011, most people couldn’t imagine borrowing money from anywhere other than an established bank with a well-known brand. Enter the online mortgage business. Today, some of the biggest mortgage lenders have only been around for a short time…and they are not even banks. With software making the world go around and technology breakthroughs like cloud computing, AI, CRM, marketing automation platforms and business intelligence, sophisticated technological capabilities are at the fingertips of even the smallest business. And small businesses are nimble. They tend to be closer to consumers and can pivot to meet customer needs — which have been known to change faster than the weather. And speaking of changing consumer norms, they no longer choose products based on the size and longevity of the companies that create them. Size does not equate to value the way it once did. For today’s consumer, it is much more about getting what you want, when you want it. This is good news for upstart companies but it creates a whole new set of challenges for enterprise market leaders in a wide variety of industries. Many of these very large companies design and build proprietary software products, because the satisfaction of their customers, and ultimately their competitive edge, depends on it. This means that even though the company is technically a bank, an insurance company, manufacturer or retailer, it is also a software company — because business success hinges on the ability to quickly and cost-effectively deliver software along with or as part of core products. Some of these organizations employ thousands, even tens of thousands, of software delivery practitioners from developers and testing professionals to project managers, business analysts, help desk personnel and security experts. The problem is that in certain ways traditional software development has the pregnancy problem: No matter how many people you add to your software delivery team it still can take the same amount time to deliver (and may take longer the more people you add). To address this, larger and larger organizations are jumping on the Agile methodology bandwagon and undertaking expensive and complicated DevOps transformations. The idea being that an organization that embraces these methods can deliver better software faster and much more efficiently — software that meets the needs of the business and the customers better than the competition. Overcoming the Challenge Behemoth businesses are adopting methodologies like Agile, that were traditionally used by much smaller players, in hopes of turning the big ship on a dime to get customers what they want faster. And that’s actually working for the companies able to overcome several not-so-small challenges. The first: How do large software delivery teams, where every discipline (and sometimes individual practitioner) uses a different tool, collaborate, communicate and stay on track while still being nimble enough to respond to changing market forces? The second: How do organizations in highly regulated industries achieve the visibility and traceability compliance requires across a huge number of projects and teams (located around the world). And, third: Legacy systems (enough said). This may not sound like a transformation killer at first glance, but when you take a close look at the tools, teams and projects that large enterprises need to manage you will see a constantly changing, three-dimensional puzzle of epic proportions. What you may not see is that Agile and DevOps alone are not quite delivering on the promise of faster delivery and bringing the business and IT closer together. This is where the small competitors that large companies once took for granted start eating their lunch. Taking a Value Stream Approach This doesn’t mean that large enterprises should try to squeeze themselves into small company shoes, including trying to narrow the tools teams use to do their jobs (because it seems like the only way to get the visibility and control you need), but it does require companies with big development organizations to take a “value stream” approach to software delivery. This means having an end-to-end view of the process (similar to what Toyota did for manufacturing many years ago, but that works in a non-linear process like software development), to reduce waste, identify bottlenecks and make sure the business and the development sides of the house are on the same page. In fact, connecting and automating the entire software development toolchain is a key enabler in the shift from managing software projects to delivering products and business value. In our view, this approach was recently boosted when, in May 2018, analyst firm Forrester published research on this issue of Value Stream Management (VSM). In by Christopher Condo and Diego Lo Giudice, we believe the authors suggest that large organizations can realize the promise of Agile and DevOps while balancing the benefits of being an industry leader with the ability to deliver fast-mover competitive advantage through better software delivery. They advised organizations to take the initial steps toward VSM immediately and noted that many available software offerings can provide immediate help with driving greater value delivery in the software delivery process. Management Elevate Agile-Plus-DevOps With Value Stream Clearly, for enterprises seeking to improve upon Agile and DevOps approaches that haven’t addressed all of their development issues, VSM is a must investigate approach. Enterprises Can Play Big, Be Nimble with Value Stream Management Development

The Apple Computer Company, as it was then called, was founded in 1976 to make and market personal computers. From its inception, Apple had a knack for expensive, high-end design and niche marketing relative to its competitors. But it struggled to compete against rivals that offered lower prices and more programs. After two decades, Apple struggled to compete against Windows personal computers and by the late 1990s, it was on the brink of bankruptcy. 2. Apple’s fortunes changed around the time it launched the iPod in 2001. Innovative design and savvy marketing had not been enough to drive a successful business strategy. This time, the confluence of several factors made it a smash success. Apple’s iTunes application allowed iPod users to organize their song library and update their iPod. A path clearing antitrust enforcement case, brought by the United States and state attorneys general, against Microsoft opened the market and constrained Microsoft’s ability to prohibit companies like Apple from offering iTunes on Windows PCs. Licensing agreements with the major music labels allowed Apple to offer iPod/iTunes users a wide selection of music for a fee-predownloaded. The iPod experience gave Apple a recipe for the future: a high-end device, a large number of platform participants (i.e., music labels and consumers), and a digital storefront. More importantly, it gave Apple a playbook: drive as many consumers and third-party participants to the platform as possible and offer a wide selection of content, products, and services created by those third parties to consumers. This structure put Apple in the driver’s seat to generate substantial revenues through device sales in the first instance and subsequently the ancillary fees that it derives from sitting between consumers on the one hand and the products and services they love on the other. 3. Apple’s experience with the iPod set the stage for Apple’s most successful product yet. In 2007, Apple launched the iPhone, a smartphone that offered high-end hardware and software applications, called “apps,” built atop a mobile operating system that mimicked the functionality and ease of use of a computer. Apple initially offered only a small number of apps that it created for the iPhone. But Apple quickly realized the enormous value that a broader community of entrepreneurial, innovative developers could drive to its users and the iPhone platform more broadly. So Apple invited and capitalized on the work of these third parties while maintaining control and monetizing that work for itself. The value of third parties’ work served an important purpose for Apple. Indeed, as early as 2010, then-CEO Steve Jobs discussed how to “further lock customers into our ecosystem” and “make Apple[’s] ecosystem even more sticky.” Three years later, Apple executives were still strategizing how to “get people hooked to the ecosystem.” 4. That strategy paid off. Over more than 15 years, Apple has built and sustained the most dominant smartphone platform and ecosystem in the United States by attracting third-party developers of all kinds to create apps that users could download on their smartphones through a digital storefront called the App Store. As developers created more and better products, content, apps, and services, more people bought iPhones, which incentivized even more third parties to develop apps for the iPhone. Today, the iPhone’s ecosystem includes products, apps, content, accessories, and services that are offered by content creators, newspaper publishers, banks, advertisers, social media companies, airlines, productivity developers, retailers and other merchants, and others. As Apple’s power grew, its leverage over third parties reinforced its tight control over how third parties innovate and monetize on and off the smartphone in ways that were anticompetitive and exclusionary. 5. Today, Apple charges as much as $1,599 for an iPhone and earns high margins on each one, more than double those of others in the industry. When developers imagine a new product or service for iPhone consumers, Apple demands up to 30 percent of the price of an app whose content, product, or service it did not create. Then when a consumer wants to buy some additional service within that app, Apple extracts up to another 30 percent, again for a service Apple does not create or develop. When customers buy a coffee or pay for groceries, Apple charges a fee for every “tap-to-pay” transaction, imposing its own form of an interchange fee on banks and a significant new cost for using credit cards. When users run an internet search, Google gives Apple a significant cut of the advertising revenue that an iPhone user’s searches generate. 6. Apple keenly understands that while a community of developers and accessory makers is indispensable to the success of the iPhone, they also pose an existential threat to its extraordinary profits by empowering consumers to “think different” and choose perfectly functional, less-expensive alternative smartphones. 7. Apple’s smartphone business model, at its core, is one that invites as many participants, including iPhone users and third-party developers, to join its platform as possible while using contractual terms to force these participants to pay substantial fees. At the same time, Apple restricts its platform participants’ ability to negotiate or compete down its fees through alternative app stores, in-app payment processors, and more. 8. In order to protect that model, Apple reduces competition in the markets for performance smartphones and smartphones generally. It does this by delaying, degrading, or outright blocking technologies that would increase competition in the smartphone markets by decreasing barriers to switching to another smartphone, among other things. The suppressed technologies would provide a high-quality user experience on any smartphone, which would, in turn, require smartphones to compete on their merits. 9. Apple suppresses such innovation through a web of contractual restrictions that it selectively enforces through its control of app distribution and its “app review” process, as well as by denying access to key points of connection between apps and the iPhone’s operating system (called Application Programming Interfaces or “APIs”). Apple can enforce these restrictions due to its position as an intermediary between product creators such as developers on the one hand and users on the other. 10. This complaint highlights five examples of Apple using these mechanisms to suppress technologies that would have increased competition among smartphones. Suppressing these technologies does not reflect competition on the merits. Rather, to protect its smartphone monopoly—and the extraordinary profits that monopoly generates—Apple repeatedly chooses to make its products worse for consumers to prevent competition from emerging. These examples below individually and collectively have contributed to Apple’s ability to secure, grow, and maintain its smartphone monopoly by increasing switching costs for users, which leads to higher prices and less innovation for users and developers. Apple has used one or both mechanisms (control of app distribution or control of APIs) to suppress the following technologies, among others: Super apps provide a user with broad functionality in a single app. Super apps can improve smartphone competition by providing a consistent user experience that can be ported across devices. Suppressing super apps harms all smartphone users—including Apple users—by denying them access to high quality experiences and it harms developers by preventing them from innovating and selling products. Cloud streaming game apps provide users with a way to play computing intensive games in the cloud. Cloud streaming games (and cloud streaming in general) can improve smartphone competition by decreasing the importance of expensive hardware for accomplishing high compute tasks on a smartphone. Suppressing cloud streaming games harms users by denying them the ability to play high-compute games, and it harms developers by preventing them from selling such games to users. Messaging apps are apps that allow users to communicate with friends, family, and other contacts. Messaging apps that work equally well across all smartphones can improve competition among smartphones by allowing users to switch phones without changing the way they communicate with friends, family, and others. Apple makes third-party messaging apps on the iPhone worse generally and relative to Apple Messages, Apple’s own messaging app, by prohibiting third-party apps from sending or receiving carrier-based messages. By doing so, Apple is knowingly and deliberately degrading quality, privacy, and security for its users and others who do not have iPhones. Apple also harms developers by artificially constraining the size of their user base. Smartwatches are an expensive accessory that typically must be paired to a smartphone. Smartwatches that can be paired with different smartphones allow users to retain their investment in a smartwatch when switching phones thereby decreasing the literal cost associated with switching from one smartphone to another, among other things. By suppressing key functions of third-party smartwatches—including the ability to respond to notifications and messages and to maintain consistent connections with the iPhone—Apple has denied users access to high performing smartwatches with preferred styling, better user interfaces and services, or better batteries, and it has harmed smartwatch developers by decreasing their ability to innovate and sell products. Digital wallets are an increasingly important way that smartphones are used and are a product in which users develop a great deal of comfort and trust as they typically contain users’ most sensitive information. Digital wallets that work across smartphone platforms allow users to move from one smartphone brand to another with decreased frictions, among other things. Apple has denied users access to digital wallets that would have provided a wide variety of enhanced features and denied digital wallet developers—often banks—the opportunity to provide advanced digital payments services to their own customers. 11. By maintaining its monopoly over smartphones, Apple is able to harm consumers in a wide variety of additional ways. For example, by denying iPhone users the ability to choose their trusted banking apps as their digital wallet, Apple retains full control both over the consumer and also over the stream of income generated by forcing users to use only Apple authorized products in the digital wallet. Apple also prohibits the creation and use of alternative app stores curated to reflect a consumer’s preferences with respect to security, privacy, or other values. These and many other features would be beneficial to consumers and empower them to make choices about what smartphone to buy and what apps and products to patronize. But allowing consumers to make that choice is an obstacle to Apple’s ability to maintain its monopoly. 12. Of course, this is not the story Apple presents to the world. For decades, Apple branded itself a nimble, innovative upstart. In 1998, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs criticized Microsoft’s monopoly and “dirty tactics” in operating systems to target Apple, which prompted the company “to go to the Department of Justice” in hopes of getting Microsoft “to play fair.” But even at that time, Apple did not face the same types of restrictions it imposes on third parties today; Apple users could use their iPod with a Windows computer, and Microsoft did not charge Apple a 30 percent fee for each song downloaded from Apple’s iTunes store. Similarly, when Apple brought the iPhone to market in 2007, it benefited from competition among component makers and wireless carriers. 13. While Apple’s anticompetitive conduct arguably has benefited its shareholders— to the tune of over $77 billion in stock buybacks in its 2023 fiscal year alone—it comes at a great cost to consumers. Some of those costs are immediate and obvious, and they directly affect Apple’s own customers: Apple inflates the price for buying and using iPhones while preventing the development of features like alternative app stores, innovative super apps, cloud-streaming games, and secure texting. 14. Other costs of Apple’s anticompetitive conduct may be less obvious in the immediate term. But they are no less harmful and even more widespread, affecting all smartphone consumers. Apple’s smartphone monopoly means that it is not economically viable to invest in building some apps, like digital wallets, because they cannot reach iPhone users. This means that innovations fueled by an interest in building the best, most user-focused product that would exist in a more competitive market never get off the ground. What’s more, Apple itself has less incentive to innovate because it has insulated itself from competition. As Apple’s executives openly acknowledge: “In looking at it with hindsight, I think going forward we need to set a stake in the ground for what features we think are ‘good enough’ for the consumer. I would argue we’re already doing *more* than what would have been good enough. But we find it very hard to regress our product features YOY [year over year].” Existing features “would have been good enough today if we hadn’t introduced [them] already,” and “anything new and especially expensive needs to be rigorously challenged before it’s allowed into the consumer phone.” Thus, it is not surprising that Apple spent more than twice as much on stock buybacks and dividends as it did on research and development. 15. Moreover, Apple has demonstrated its ability to use its smartphone monopoly to impose fee structures and manipulate app review to inhibit aggrieved parties from taking advantage of regulatory and judicial solutions imposed on Apple that attempt to narrowly remedy harm from its conduct. 16. Apple wraps itself in a cloak of privacy, security, and consumer preferences to justify its anticompetitive conduct. Indeed, it spends billions on marketing and branding to promote the self-serving premise that only Apple can safeguard consumers’ privacy and security interests. Apple selectively compromises privacy and security interests when doing so is in Apple’s own financial interest—such as degrading the security of text messages, offering governments and certain companies the chance to access more private and secure versions of app stores, or accepting billions of dollars each year for choosing Google as its default search engine when more private options are available. In the end, Apple deploys privacy and security justifications as an elastic shield that can stretch or contract to serve Apple’s financial and business interests. 17. Smartphones have so revolutionized American life that it can be hard to imagine a world beyond the one that Apple, a self-interested monopolist, deems “good enough.” But under our system of antitrust laws, “good enough” is, quite simply, not enough. Consumers, competition, and the competitive process—not Apple alone—should decide what options consumers should have. And competition, not Apple’s self-interested business strategies, should be the catalyst for innovation essential to our daily lives, not only in the smartphone market but in closely related industries like personal entertainment, automotive infotainment, and even more innovations that have not yet been imagined. Competition is what will ensure that Apple’s conduct and business decisions do not thwart the Apple. next 18. Protecting competition and the innovation that competition inevitably ushers in for consumers, developers, publishers, content creators, and device manufacturers is why Plaintiffs bring this lawsuit under Section 2 of the Sherman Act to challenge Apple’s maintenance of its monopoly over smartphone markets, which affect hundreds of millions of Americans every day. Plaintiffs bring this case to rid smartphone markets of Apple’s monopolization and exclusionary conduct and to ensure that the next generation of innovators can upend the technological world as we know it with new and transformative technologies. So, this is absolutely just another example of me playing around too much, but I had to share. As I mentioned in my yesterday, Google's AI Studio now supports uploading files and working with them in your prompt. post Today, I decided to give the Chat interface a try as I hadn't yet played with it. On a whim, I googled "dungeons and dragons rules PDF" and... well, you won't believe what happened next. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) First off, the most important thing to note if you want to test with PDFs, ensure that they are OCRed. Right now, AI Studio does not handle that well, but it should be corrected in the future. As I'm still very new to this, I'm trying my best to take things slowly. But every time I open and see the settings on the right, I keep nagging myself to take a deeper look. ]; I thought today I'd take a look at , as I had a rough idea of what it implied. Temperature, at a high level, refers to how 'varied' a particular generated response can be. As an example, if I were to say, "I like ____", then you could make a list of what the next word would be, rated by how likely it is: temperature very Cats (VERY LIKELY) Star Wars (LIKELY) Books (LIKELY) Vegetables (UNLIKELY) At the highest temperature value, there will be a of variety. At the lowest level, no variety. Now, from what I know, that does mean that every response will be the same. Just very similar. This post, , does a great job explaining temperature (and other settings). lot not "Creatively Deterministic: What are Temperature and Top_P in Generative AI?" While it's relatively easy in AI Studio to adjust the temperature setting you see above, what I really wanted was a tool to help me see multiple results at once. So, I built one. :) Temperature Testing Tool My tool begins with a simple prompt: This is pretty vanilla HTML, so I won't share the code here (I've got a link to everything down below). The last function simply passes my prompt and temperature to the backend API. I'll share a screenshot, but it's a wall of text. This function has error handling, and that absolutely bit me in the butt. I'm going to be taking a look at those errors, and how to handle them, in a future blog post. no So what did I find? Results Here are the results of using the prompt: "Tell me a story about cats." First, temperature 0. Result 1 Once upon a time, in a quaint little town nestled amidst rolling hills, there lived a mischievous cat named Mittens. Mittens was known throughout the neighborhood for her playful antics and her insatiable curiosity. One sunny afternoon, as Mittens was basking in the warmth of the sunbeam that streamed through the window, she noticed a peculiar sound coming from the kitchen.
