Surprise! You have competition. These competitors have raised more funding, hired larger teams, or been around longer than you. Yet, you aren’t afraid for some reason. You stepped out into the fray without hesitation. How do you start crushing your competition? If you’re one of everyone who has competition, you’re in luck! I’m going to give you the secrets to crushing your competitors. So get your pen and paper out, life is about to get simple (but not easy) for you. Product Obsession You need an obsession with your product. To the point that . You can’t stop thinking about it. You eat, sleep, and breathe the product. . Those times you space out in the middle of conversations because you’re thinking about new features is not a curse, it’s a blessing. People find it annoying, but you can’t help it. it’s disgusting It’s sad This behavior isn’t healthy, but you’re competitors likely don’t have this same obsession. While they would rather sleep well at night and have a healthy work-life balance, you gave that all up the day you started your company. It wasn’t a choice, your product now consumes you. Competitor Lesson 1: If you want to beat your competition, you need an unhealthy obsession with your product. Team A good team building exercise. It works best if you imagine the mochi rice as your competition. You need to know your team inside and out. The advantage goes to the team that can name each individual’s strengths and weaknesses. It shouldn’t be the first time you have developed products together. A question shouldn’t need an email, it should be a call over the shoulder to your co-founder. This reduces communication time from hours or even days, to seconds. Here’s how we do it Most of us have been working together for nearly 8 years. Not only have we known each other for nearly a decade, but we all still live together. We eat together. We work in the same small room in the house. That’s right, every one of us works from our tiny office (no, not the mythical garage) in our tiny house. Our computers are just feet apart, so every issue is resolved instantly. It’s rare for us to have issues that take longer than 10 minutes to resolve unless we are asleep. Even then, we’re pretty good at sleep-coding. Exhibit A. Your competitors likely don’t have this same team structure. A tight nit team is your advantage, so use it. The competitor that has a dozen part time employees spread across the world isn’t your concern, it’s the 4 guys in a room smashing code together into the wee hours of the night. The team is small, but the decisions are quick and deliberate. It’s not uncommon for your competitors to turn issues that should be resolved in seconds to problems that get resolved the next day or even the next week. This communication break down results in a high overhead which makes progress slow. Competitor Lesson 2: If you want to beat your competition, build a team that works better together. Funding Is that…bad? Funding doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know what to do with it. Some of your competitors have millions of dollars in funding. They are throwing everything they have at these problems and they aren’t getting far. Forcing themselves into the market, even though nobody is using their solution. The problem once again stems from the product. They don’t have conviction for their idea. They don’t have a vision for the world which is better than it is today. Using their product just leads to a string of “why” questions baffling the user. They never took the time to understand what the user actually cares about or what they want to be able to do. No fluff here. You can get further with $0 in funding than most teams can with over $1M in funding. The way you accomplish this is simple. You need to find awesome people who believe in your vision, all of your marketing should be free, and the development should be done by your own team. Cut out every ounce of fluff. Competitor Lesson 3: If you want to beat your competition, solve your problems with ingenuity, not money. User Focus “Not my job!” Well, at least not anymore. That’s the harsh truth. You don’t have the freedom to use the words “we will fix it later”. You fix it now. When you’re product isn’t working, you are working. Once the issue is resolved, you can have your break, but not before that time. Users don’t care about your problems. In order to improve your connection with users, there needs to be a constant dialogue. Open up as many channels as possible for users to connect with you. Ensure you connect with each group on a consistent basis. Instead of 2 or 3 conversations with users every day, you should be having 10 to 20. Immerse yourself in their prospective and completely understand where they are coming from. These conversations will guide you through the tough decisions that need to be navigated on a daily basis. If you ever have doubts about why you may be getting crushed by your competition, look no further than your attitude when communicating with users. Competitor Lesson 4: If you want to beat your competition, become a slave to your users. Wrap Up If you want to beat your competition: you need an unhealthy obsession with your product. build a team that works better together. solve your problems with ingenuity, not money. become a slave to your users. You might be looking at this list of secrets and be thinking things like “this sounds miserable” and “I didn’t sign up to be a slave to our users”. Or, “Wait, I’m supposed to with my team??” live In all honesty, you’re right. It would be miserable, if you don’t love what you’re doing. Becoming a servant to your users doesn’t happen out of desire, it happens naturally when you prioritize the user experience over all else. You don’t need to do these things! You are welcome to do none of the above. You can simply let your competitors steam roll you because they have more funding, experience, or any other excuse. Or you can prepare for battle. You can turn your weaknesses into strengths. You can do the things others are simply unable, unwilling, or too afraid to do. When the enemy is at your gates will you be wishing you had done more? Or will you stride confidently into battle, knowing that what to be their advantages actually make them soft, slow, and complacent. appear Money doesn’t talk, a good product does. You don’t need money to start building your vision for the future. You can get further with no money than many of your competitors can reach with millions of dollars. The key is intense and obsessive focus. Focusing on the product and the users. Everything else is secondary. The marketing is secondary, the partnerships are secondary, and the money is secondary. Semantic Kernel has this feature called Plugins where you can define Semantic Functions their inputs and can re-use them repeatedly. A plug in is made up of two files a .json (contains config info for LLM & input params) & .txt (contains a custom prompt). For design thinking use case we are going to create 4 plugins. You can find the code for all 4 plugins . here : Takes customer feedback and isolates sentiment and gives a concise summary for each sentiment expressed by the customer. Empathize : Takes output from empathize step, categorizes the analysis in a markdown table. Defines the problems & its possible source. Define : Takes the output from the above step and generates ideas in the form of a markdown table with two columns called Low hanging fruit & Higher-hanging fruit. Ideate : This plugin takes in the ideas generated in previous step and gives a low-resolution prototype, so the solution can be tested. PrototypeWithPaper Step 4 – Bring it all together: Note that in the previous steps even though I have given the code for four plugins, explained what they do in the context of Design Thinking. We wrote custom prompts and made them plugins and put them in a folder called . And then used Kernel to call them using the SWOT analysis & Customer feedback for the Coffee Shop. When AI Joins the Dev Team

When learning a new technology, sometimes I just want to see it work. It gives me a baseline to extend my ideas, to see what is possible, and to imagine what it can become. This series aims at minimizing the possibility of having a missing link and encourages you to build your next innovative solution based on what you learned here. Today, we are building a virtual coffee shop that serves cappuccino. Through this project, we are exploring the benefit of using AWS Application Load Balancer and WAF. Why Use a Load Balancer? Imagine owning a coffee shop with a fantastic cappuccino that attracts customers in droves. Initially, your trusty coffee machine effortlessly manages the influx of orders, serving a cappuccino per minute. However, success comes knocking, and soon, a single customer per minute evolves into a queue of two. The dilemma arises – the second customer is left waiting, and impatience could cost you their loyalty. But fear not, for there's a solution: the load balancer. The Coffee Machine Analogy: Picture your coffee machine as your API backend. As demand surges, the analogy becomes clear. Vertical scaling, akin to replacing your current machine with a pricier one capable of handling two cappuccinos per minute, has its limits. Costs skyrocket as performance gains taper off, creating an unsustainable trajectory. Enter Horizontal Scaling: A more sensible approach is horizontal scaling. Just as you'd introduce more coffee machines to meet growing demand, horizontal scaling involves adding more servers to distribute the load. This strategy accommodates increasing traffic gracefully, keeping performance steady without exponential cost escalation. The Load Balancer's Role: Here's where the load balancer steps in – the load balancer ensures an even distribution of incoming requests across multiple servers. Think of it as your coffee shop's efficient manager, guiding each customer to the next available machine. Customizable Traffic Distribution: Tailoring your load balancer's configuration to suit your needs is key. Whether you choose round-robin distribution, favoring fairness, or opt for more nuanced algorithms based on server health, the load balancer's flexibility adapts to your traffic patterns. Enhanced Performance and Resilience: Load balancers don't just prevent bottlenecks. They also bolster fault tolerance. If a server falters, the load balancer redirects traffic, averting disruptions. This ensures uninterrupted service, akin to customers always getting their cappuccinos. Why Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF)? Owning a coffee shop is an honor, and naturally, safeguarding your valuable resources becomes paramount. This is where AWS WAF comes into play, offering a seamless method to place a protective firewall in front of your load balancer. Learning the nuances of WAF may be a steep learning curve. However, with an array of managed rules offered by AWS, configuring the WAF can take mere minutes to complete. What Do We Want to Achieve? Set up 2 EC2 instances, each running a Coffee-Api Node.js Express application. Set up an Application Load Balancer. Set up and attach a WAF to the load balancer. Observe how the traffic is distributed over both EC2 instances. Here is the high-level diagram of the infrastructure. Make sure you are launching the second EC2 instance in a different public subnet. Before installing coffee-api, update the host to ‘MK-002’ in the production.json. Testing Let’s use Postman to test the API endpoints. Set the request URL to http://your-public-dns/api/coffee/make Set the content-type to application/JSON Here is the request body {

} In the response, you should get your cappuccino! (MK-001) Here's your cappuccino. Enjoy! Setting Up an Application Load Balancer Finally, we can set up the load balancer! We need to first create a target group and forward traffic to this group in the load balancer. Create a Target Group Go to EC2 > Target groups > Create target group. Give it a name. Make sure the Protocol is HTTP, and the port is set to 80. Select the VPC you created. Choose HTTP1 in the Protocol version. Click Next. Select those 2 EC2 instances you created. Click on Include as pending below. Click on Create target group. Create a Load Balancer Go to EC2 > Load balancers > Create Load balancer. Select Application Load Balancer. Give it a name. In Network mapping, select the VPC you created. Select those 2 public subnets you created. Select the security group that controls the traffic to your load balancer. In Listeners and routing, set Protocol to HTTP, and Port to 80. Select the target group you just created. Leave the rest as default. Click on Create load balancer. You are done setting up the load balancer! Additional Steps Recall that when we setup the reverse proxy, we set the ServerName to the public DNS of the EC2 instance. We verified that the API endpoint is working by testing it with Postman. Now, we want to configure the reverse proxy to forward traffic from your load balancer to the API endpoint. Observe the Traffic At this point, you are ready to observe the magic of load balancing. Recall that you have one endpoint setup as MK-001, and the other as MK-002. In Postman, update the URL in your request to point to the public DNS of the . load balancer Send the request multiple times, you should see the response with the name alternating like the following. (MK-001) Here is your cappuccino. Enjoy!
(MK-002) Here is your cappuccino. Enjoy! There you go. That’s a victory! Take a break and enjoy your coffee. Once you are ready, let’s add a WAF in front of the load balancer. Setting Up WAF Go to AWS WAF > Web ACLs > Create web ACL Give it a name. Select the region where your load balancer is at. Add AWS resources. Select your load balancer. Click Next. Click Add rules. Click Add managed rule groups. Expand AWS-managed rule groups. Pick those from the . Free rule groups You can read more about what those rule groups do in the descriptions. Click Add Rules. Leave the rest as default. Click Next until you see Create web ACL. Click Create web ACL. The process will take a few minutes. Then you should see the success badge at the top of the screen. Once the Web ACL is created, click on it, and you will be able to see all the metrics you set up for this ACL. Test the coffee-api using Postman again. You should get the same result. In the Overview of your web ACL, observe the diagram of requests flowing through your coffee shop, like the following. Ask your friends to hit your coffee-api, and see your coffee shop grow! Conclusion As the aroma of success wafts through our virtual coffee shop, we experienced the power of load balancers and WAF through the following steps: Setup a VPC for the virtual coffee shop. Host the coffee-api on 2 EC2 instances. Setup a load balancer to distribute requests. Setup a WAF to protect our resources. Finally, we make requests through Postman and get our coffee.
