Boldness The place and part which boldness takes in the dynamic system of powers, where it stands opposed to Foresight and prudence, has been stated in the chapter on the certainty of the result in order thereby to show, that theory has no right to restrict it by virtue of its legislative power. But this noble impulse, with which the human soul raises itself above the most formidable dangers, is to be regarded as an active principle peculiarly belonging to War. In fact, in what branch of human activity should boldness have a right of citizenship if not in War? From the transport-driver and the drummer up to the General, it is the noblest of virtues, the true steel which gives the weapon its edge and brilliancy. Let us admit in fact it has in War even its own prerogatives. Over and above the result of the calculation of space, time, and quantity, we must allow a certain percentage which boldness derives from the weakness of others, whenever it gains the mastery. It is therefore, virtually, a creative power. This is not difficult to demonstrate philosophically. As often as boldness encounters hesitation, the probability of the result is of necessity in its favour, because the very state of hesitation implies a loss of equilibrium already. It is only when it encounters cautious foresight—which we may say is just as bold, at all events just as strong and powerful as itself—that it is at a disadvantage; such cases, however, rarely occur. Out of the whole multitude of prudent men in the world, the great majority are so from timidity. Amongst large masses, boldness is a force, the special cultivation of which can never be to the detriment of other forces, because the great mass is bound to a higher will by the frame-work and joints of the order of battle and of the service, and therefore is guided by an intelligent power which is extraneous. Boldness is therefore here only like a spring held down until its action is required. The higher the rank the more necessary it is that boldness should be accompanied by a reflective mind, that it may not be a mere blind outburst of passion to no purpose; for with increase of rank it becomes always less a matter of self-sacrifice and more a matter of the preservation of others, and the good of the whole. Where regulations of the service, as a kind of second nature, prescribe for the masses, reflection must be the guide of the General, and in his case individual boldness in action may easily become a fault. Still, at the same time, it is a fine failing, and must not be looked at in the same light as any other. Happy the Army in which an untimely boldness frequently manifests itself; it is an exuberant growth which shows a rich soil. Even foolhardiness, that is boldness without an object, is not to be despised; in point of fact it is the same energy of feeling, only exercised as a kind of passion without any co-operation of the intelligent faculties. It is only when it strikes at the root of obedience, when it treats with contempt the orders of superior authority, that it must be repressed as a dangerous evil, not on its own account but on account of the act of disobedience, for there is nothing in War which is of greater importance than obedience. The reader will readily agree with us that, supposing an equal degree of discernment to be forthcoming in a certain number of cases, a thousand times as many of them will end in disaster through over-anxiety as through boldness. One would suppose it natural that the interposition of a reasonable object should stimulate boldness, and therefore lessen its intrinsic merit, and yet the reverse is the case in reality. The intervention of lucid thought or the general supremacy of mind deprives the emotional forces of a great part of their power. On that account boldness becomes of rarer occurrence the higher we ascend the scale of rank, for whether the discernment and the understanding do or do not increase with these ranks still the Commanders, in their several stations as they rise, are pressed upon more and more severely by objective things, by relations and claims from without, so that they become the more perplexed the lower the degree of their individual intelligence. This so far as regards War is the chief foundation of the truth of the French proverb:— “Tel brille au second qui s’éclipse au premier.” Almost all the Generals who are represented in history as merely having attained to mediocrity, and as wanting in decision when in supreme command, are men celebrated in their antecedent career for their boldness and decision.(*) (*) Beaulieu, Benedek, Bazaine, Buller, Melas, Mack. &c. &c. In those motives to bold action which arise from the pressure of necessity we must make a distinction. Necessity has its degrees of intensity. If it lies near at hand, if the person acting is in the pursuit of his object driven into great dangers in order to escape others equally great, then we can only admire his resolution, which still has also its value. If a young man to show his skill in horsemanship leaps across a deep cleft, then he is bold; if he makes the same leap pursued by a troop of head-chopping Janissaries he is only resolute. But the farther off the necessity from the point of action, the greater the number of relations intervening which the mind has to traverse; in order to realise them, by so much the less does necessity take from boldness in action. If Frederick the Great, in the year 1756, saw that War was inevitable, and that he could only escape destruction by being beforehand with his enemies, it became necessary for him to commence the War himself, but at the same time it was certainly very bold: for few men in his position would have made up their minds to do so. Although Strategy is only the province of Generals-in-Chief or Commanders in the higher positions, still boldness in all the other branches of an Army is as little a matter of indifference to it as their other military virtues. With an Army belonging to a bold race, and in which the spirit of boldness has been always nourished, very different things may be undertaken than with one in which this virtue, is unknown; for that reason we have considered it in connection with an Army. But our subject is specially the boldness of the General, and yet we have not much to say about it after having described this military virtue in a general way to the best of our ability. The higher we rise in a position of command, the more of the mind, understanding, and penetration predominate in activity, the more therefore is boldness, which is a property of the feelings, kept in subjection, and for that reason we find it so rarely in the highest positions, but then, so much the more should it be admired. Boldness, directed by an overruling intelligence, is the stamp of the hero: this boldness does not consist in venturing directly against the nature of things, in a downright contempt of the laws of probability, but, if a choice is once made, in the rigorous adherence to that higher calculation which genius, the tact of judgment, has gone over with the speed of lightning. The more boldness lends wings to the mind and the discernment, so much the farther they will reach in their flight, so much the more comprehensive will be the view, the more exact the result, but certainly always only in the sense that with greater objects greater dangers are connected. The ordinary man, not to speak of the weak and irresolute, arrives at an exact result so far as such is possible without ocular demonstration, at most after diligent reflection in his chamber, at a distance from danger and responsibility. Let danger and responsibility draw close round him in every direction, then he loses the power of comprehensive vision, and if he retains this in any measure by the influence of others, still he will lose his power of decision, because in that point no one can help him. We think then that it is impossible to imagine a distinguished General without boldness, that is to say, that no man can become one who is not born with this power of the soul, and we therefore look upon it as the first requisite for such a career. How much of this inborn power, developed and moderated through education and the circumstances of life, is left when the man has attained a high position, is the second question. The greater this power still is, the stronger will genius be on the wing, the higher will be its flight. The risks become always greater, but the purpose grows with them. Whether its lines proceed out of and get their direction from a distant necessity, or whether they converge to the keystone of a building which ambition has planned, whether Frederick or Alexander acts, is much the same as regards the critical view. If the one excites the imagination more because it is bolder, the other pleases the understanding most, because it has in it more absolute necessity. We have still to advert to one very important circumstance. The spirit of boldness can exist in an Army, either because it is in the people, or because it has been generated in a successful War conducted by able Generals. In the latter case it must of course be dispensed with at the commencement. Now in our days there is hardly any other means of educating the spirit of a people in this respect, except by War, and that too under bold Generals. By it alone can that effeminacy of feeling be counteracted, that propensity to seek for the enjoyment of comfort, which cause degeneracy in a people rising in prosperity and immersed in an extremely busy commerce. A Nation can hope to have a strong position in the political world only if its character and practice in actual War mutually support each other in constant reciprocal action. Boldness takes in the dynamic system of powers

Job hunting is stressful in itself. However, it becomes unbearably stressful when you are finally invited to the interview, and then you are surprised with an unexpected question. Personally, I’ve got stuck frequently on questions starting with “tell me about the case in your experience when…” Immediately after such a question, a monkey started singing in my head, and I could remember nothing like I’ve got no experience at all. Sounds familiar? In this article, I’ll tell you how I have successfully overcome this situation preparing myself a complete list of cases to talk about. Following my path, you’ll easily end up with your own set of cases and be ready to rock on your next job interview. I’ve analyzed my experience both as an applicant and as an interviewer, a number of articles and discussion threads on the Internet, and came up with a list of questions that covers 80% of interview discussions about your previous experience. If you think them through, it will be really hard to surprise you during the interview. My suggestion is to prepare answers for these questions and be ready to swap them around adjusting to the actual discussion. You can even write the answers down and revise them from time to time. It will be much easier, more effective, and less stressful than answering everything from scratch. 1. Your Background in 3 Minutes Everything starts with a general discussion about your experience. You can think of it as an elevator pitch where the project you are pitching is you. This is one of the most important parts as it creates your initial impression. My list has the following options to consider: Make it brief. Try to fit your speech into 3 minutes so that you have enough time for the interview itself. This is only an ice cracker. Indicate your major accomplishments in each company. You are trying to sell yourself, not just telling your story. Try to leave hooks for the prepared cases in your speech, as it frames the context for the whole discussion. Let further questions flow from it. Indicate reasons for leaving each company in a few words. In this case, you won’t need to discuss it further. Be sure to reflect on your development as a professional. Your experience and accomplishments should be like pieces of a puzzle presenting your best traits in a couple of minutes. Rehearse it a couple of times. You should express confidence and calm. 2. Successes You Are Proud Of Now, let’s dive into cases. Success case is a must-have one, I don’t think I need to explain why. What I suggest to prepare here: Think big and try to find an example of some major accomplishment. The fresher the better, interviewers prefer to discuss recent cases as they are probably more relevant to interviewers’ needs. Explain the reason you’ve selected this exact case. It can showcase what motivates and inspires you. It would be just perfect if your success case reflects at least something from the following list of cases: data interaction, user research, team leadership, stakeholder management, or tough decisions. That’s how you can kill two birds with one stone. 3. Lessons Learned From Failure This one is even more popular than the success case. But remember that you don’t have to put all your dirty clothes out and repent for your sins. Even your failure should showcase your best features, so: Again think big. Try to stay on the positive trek, and look for a case where everything ended OK, but could have been much better. Indicate how you have fixed the situation and what you have learned from it, even if you were not asked about it. 4. Data Interpretation Ability As a product manager, you are expected to deal with data. Almost every company tries to check your ability to analyze data, run AB-testing, interpret statistics, etc. The best you can do is to include data interpretation in success and failure cases. However, in order to be 100% safe, you can also have a separate case in your pocket. Think about the following: Numbers were questionable, but you managed to deal with it and found the truth. There were way too many data sources and you were capable of understanding what was going on. You’ve checked your hypothesis with the help of sophisticated metrics. And don’t forget to use real numbers anywhere you can. Otherwise, you are risking sounding ungrounded and shallow. 5. User Research and Insights The next must-have for a PM is to be user-oriented when making product decisions. Try to include user research, customer development interviews, or any other user interaction in your cases. Showcase your ability not only to speak to real customers but also to get useful insights out of it and to grow your metrics with them. 6. Stakeholders Management I don’t know who rules the PM world more: users or stakeholders. That’s why it is really important to be able to present your ability to deal with different stakeholders. Include in your cases examples when: You had to explain to a stakeholder that he or she was wrong; You managed to resolve a conflict between different stakeholders; You were able to understand the initial needs of a stakeholder; Or any other complicated situations with stakeholders that you have successfully managed. 7. Unexpected Situations This one shouldn’t be hard as the PM's life consists of unexpected situations. Prepare the case where everything didn’t go according to plan, and explain how easily you dealt with it. Again, think of something big and fresh. 8. Team Leadership Now, it’s time to focus on the team and your leadership skills. Showcase the situation where you spearheaded the project and lead the team to success. If it was not initially intended to be led by you – it would be just perfect! 9. Conflict Resolution When it comes to people management, you should also prepare an example of a conflict situation that you were able to resolve successfully. As you don’t want to appear confrontational, think about the case where you were involved but you weren’t the reason for the conflict. I’d rather avoid speaking about intense situations which can make you emotional. Try to select a case where you can present every side of the conflict without extra judgments. 10. Tough Deadlines and Resources Another useful example is a case where you had to deliver some results with tough deadlines and limited resources. Almost every business wants to have managers who can save time and money –– showcase your ability to do that. 11. Strengths and Weaknesses Now, let’s touch on a couple of generic questions starting with your strengths and weaknesses. Or your drivers and limitations. Or your superpowers and pain points. Here are my thoughts on it: 3 is a great number, try to come up with a list of 3 drivers and 3 limitations. Less is not so convincing, while more is hard to perceive. Try to make these lists versatile: one thing about the product work, another about the teamwork, and one more about your personality, for example. Remember to focus on the positive parts. If you speak about your pain points, specify how you deal with them. Even your weaknesses should showcase your strengths. 12. What Are You Looking For in a New Job? This question is very important even if no one asks you about it during the interview. Not only because your interviewers should check whether what you are looking for correlates with their expectations. But you also should be able to test whether the company can give you what you want. That’s why try to answer as honestly as possible when it comes to what  you expect from your future job. And be ready to present it briefly within 3 bullet points. 13*. Bonus: How to Make Your Favorite Product Better? Bonus part. I don’t know why, but I was asked this question at least once at each round of my job search: 10 years ago, 7 years ago, 5 years ago, and now. That’s why I suggest you have an answer to it: what is your favorite product and how can you make it better? You can adjust the answer for each company to connect with the actual industry and the company’s values. Here is a brief summary in one picture that you can save for future use: Your Questions And… that is not the end. Do not forget to prepare your questions as it is also a great way to present yourself and stand out from hundreds of applicants. Try to ask questions that can shed some light on the things you’ve listed in question #12. If you got stuck here, I can give you some ideas to start with: What is your biggest challenge at the moment? What does your average day/week look like? What is the proportion of different types of work that you have (deep work, meeting, routine, etc.)? What don’t you like about your job at the moment? What bothers you? Apple released its fiscal Q1 2023 financial results on Feb. 2, and it was one of the least impressive quarters for the business in recent memory. For the first time in close to four years, Apple's quarterly revenues declined. The report shows that the company just experienced its largest decline since 2016 and its first decline since 2019. Products revenue was $96.4 billion, down 8% from last year, Mac revenue was $7.7 billion, down 29% year over year, and overall revenue was down more than 5% year over year. This was in part due to the company's failure to match sales from the same quarter last year across the majority of its hardware segments and production setbacks in China that limited its capacity to deliver its flagship iPhones - iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max according to Apple’s CEO, Tom Cook statement in the call. Explaining the reasons for the downturn, CEO Tim Cook mentioned three things, A challenging foreign exchange environment Covid-19 related constraints Difficult macroeconomic climate However, the iPad and services, which include products like Apple Music and TV+, iCloud, and AppleCare, were the two areas of the company that did experience growth. Services saw an increase of 6.4% to $20.77 billion, while iPad sales increased by 29.66% to $9.4 billion. Despite the business's overall difficulties in China, CFO Luca Maestri notes that the company nonetheless achieved records for services revenue in Greater China during the December quarter and for all of the Americas, Europe, and the rest of Asia Pacific. “We now have more than 935 million paid subscriptions across the services on our platform, up more than 150 million during the last 12 months alone and nearly four times what we had just five years ago,” CFO Luca Maestri said in the earring call that the holiday shopping season was a period purchases made using one of its service products hit an all-time high “And we continue to increase the reach and improve the quality of our offerings. For instance, Apple Pay is now available to millions of merchants in nearly 70 countries and regions. And we saw a record-breaking number of purchases made using Apple Pay globally during the holiday shopping season.” Cloud services, payment services, music, and the App Store and AppleCare all established quarterly sales records in the company's December quarter. The company also had an all-time high across all geographic segments in its installed base and Lucas mentioned two reasons for this performance, one was that the company encountered substantial supply restrictions during the December quarter the previous year, whereas this year, they had enough supply to meet demand. Secondly, during the quarter, they introduced a new iPad and the iPad Pro with the M2 chip. Apple didn't offer any revenue guidance for the current quarter, which ends in March, according to Lucas, the macroeconomic uncertainty around the world is the reason for the lack of clarity.
