The giant lizard destroys stuff.

This is a simple explanation of what goes on in the Godzilla movies, but goddamn is it entertaining and thrilling. Who knows what they mix into these movies, but they make them fun every time. And this isn’t an unpopular opinion, that’s why these movies have been a money-making machine for decades.

They keep making more and more. Whether it’s sequels or reboots, Godzilla truly is a monster that can’t be killed. The franchise's latest reboot (referred to as the Monsterverse) started in 2014, and they made it bigger than ever with the inclusion of the gigantic iconic gorilla, King Kong (Actually, these two have been in the same film before, but it’s been a while since that happened).

As great as this franchise is, it could be a little confusing trying to get into it. So, here’s a guide explaining how to watch the newest version of the Godzilla franchise. Here are the new Godzilla movies in order.

The New Godzilla Movies in Order

  1. Godzilla
  2. Kong: Skull Island
  3. Godzilla: King of the Monsters
  4. Godzilla Vs. Kong

1. Godzilla (2014)

Okay, it’s pretty self-explanatory that the first entry in the rebooted franchise is just titled Godzilla, but this is where it all begins (again). Although a few people knew of the existence of Godzilla and other similar creatures, the majority of the world had no idea.

Well, they get a rude awakening one day when these gigantic monsters pop out of nowhere and started fighting each other. Godzilla gets in a tangle with monsters, and unfortunately, this leads to a lot of casualties.

But Godzilla isn’t just killing people and destroying cities for funsies, there’s something deeper going on. So, what’s going on? This a storyline that continues in the follow-up movies, which go more into detail about Godzilla and his relationship with the other creatures.

2. Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Although released after Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island takes place many decades before it. The premise of the movie is very simple. Humans explore, poke, and prod in a place they shouldn’t be which leads to giant monsters, including Kong, attacking them. Ah, a tale as old as time.

Skull Island is not a friendly place for anyone who’s not a giant monster, which is something that a bunch of soldiers quickly find out. It’s a battlefield where Kong fights monsters known as Skullcrawlers, and the soldiers are merely ants in the middle of this fight.

But similar to Godzilla, Kong isn’t a murdering monster who enjoys mindlessly killing humans. There’s more to the creature than that, and the franchise dives deeper into the creature in a later film.

3. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)

Everyone’s favorite gigantic lizard is back, and he’s back with a vengeance. But he’s not the only creature making a comeback, this movie also marks the return of King Ghidorah. Godzilla thinks he’s the king of the monsters but Ghidorah has something to say about that. This leads to the two monsters engaging in an all-out brawl that threatens to destroy everything.

And Godzilla and King Ghidorah aren’t the only creatures to appear in this movie. There are other monsters that long-time Godzilla fans will recognize. Overall, this movie, as the title states, is about Godzilla taking his crown and throne as the one true king. Or is he?

4. Godzilla Vs. Kong (2021)

This is what the Monsterverse has been leading up to this entire time. A giant gorilla fighting a giant radioactive lizard, and it was beautiful.

A lot has changed since we last saw Kong back in Kong: Skull Island. Technology has evolved, more creatures have risen, and Godzilla has become king of the monsters. This is something that Kong won’t stand for. Both creatures want to be at the top of the food chamber, and they each stand in each other’s way.

Things become even more complicated when humans get involved in the conflict and create more chaos and confusion.

Although the Monsterverse has only 4 movies, they’ve been a blast, and we can’t wait to continue seeing over-the-top creatures fighting each other.
