The Explorer 6 satellite launched atop a Thor-Able rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Its mission was to study Earth’s electrical and magnetic fields in the upper atmosphere, but it also carried a device for scanning and photographing cloud cover. Approximately a week into the mission, it captured and transmitted the first photograph of Earth via satellite while orbiting over Mexico.
American inventor Theophilus Van Kannel was granted the patent for the revolving door, a device that would revolutionize the way people entered and exited buildings. The revolving door quickly caught on as an efficient and practical solution to these issues. It became especially popular in high-traffic areas such as office buildings, department stores, and hotels.
IBM dedicates the first program-controlled calculator, the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (known best as the Harvard Mark I). The Mark I was a curious mixture of punch card technology and simple electronics which became out-of-date almost as soon as it was completed. It was 51 feet long, 8 feet high, and weighed 5 tons.
