Limarc defines AI-generated content as: “Any text that is generated by AI without human input other than the prompt, while AI-edited content is a text that is written by someone but edited with the help of AI tools - (and reviewed by the person!).” When it comes to AI-generated or edited content, transparency is key.

In this episode, we talk to Limarc Ambalina, VP at HackerNoon, to discuss the impact of AI on writing and journalism.

Limarc shares his journey and offers advice for aspiring writers. Ethics surrounding AI-generated content is also explored.

A little background

Limarc started as a freelance writer in 2016, and worked his way up to part-time and eventually full-time writing roles.

After nearly 2 years working for an AI company in Japan, he became interested in AI and started writing about it personally, as well as professionally. This is what led him to HackerNoon. You can see some of his AI articles on HackerNoon below:

  1. Introducing theHolopix50k Dataset for Image Super-Resolution
  2. MIDAS: A State-of-the-Art Model for Anomaly Detection in Graphs
  3. How IBM's Stance on Face Recognition Will Affect the AI Industry

At HackerNoon, Limarc oversees the editorial team and publishes content on a wide range of tech topics, including AI and machine learning. So he’s one of the people in charge when it comes to decisions related to AI-generated content and AI-edited content, which has an important difference. It also makes Limarc one of the best people to talk about AI and writing.

So what is AI-generated text, and how does it differ from AI-edited text?

Limarc defines AI-generated content as:

“Any text that is generated by AI without human input other than the prompt, while AI-edited content is a text that is written by someone but edited with the help of AI tools - (and reviewed by the person!).”

When it comes to AI-generated or edited content, transparency is key.

Claiming sole credit for it is unethical, and you may get into trouble for the AI’s mistakes. Make it clear how the content was created.

AI can aid writers in editing and proofreading their work, but Limarc stresses the value of a human touch to add creativity and nuance, something AI has lots of difficulty with as of now. Though Limarc still advises using AI tools to improve your writing such as to identify grammatical mistakes and awkward phrasing.

Tl;dr: AI is definitely useful for writers and journalists, but ethics and transparency are vital. AI-generated content will increase with improvements, but humans are still needed for high-quality content. AI-edited content is the key to better and more efficient writing.
