pick a color and a number,

people reliably select blue and 7 the most

Psychologists have a
name for this pattern.

And when picking a random
number between 1 and 100,

that the equivalent of
the blue-seven phenomenon

My producer, Emily, and I
spoke to hundreds of people

but maybe that's because
people just expected

that we'd ask them for
numbers between 1 and 10.

The most common two-digit
number really was 37,

because it turns up so much.

I started getting email from
strangers, it's everywhere.

- Apparently, people choose 37 so reliably

that there's even a widespread
professional magic trick

that relies entirely on
getting an audience member

- I'm gonna ask you to think
of a number in a moment, okay?

You could have 19, 17, or 15, but not 11.

Because you see both numbers are the same,
1 and 1 next to one another.
