The developers of the Mortal Kombat and Injustice series, NetherRealm Studios, have kept quiet about what their next game will be. However, this year marks the 30th anniversary of Mortal Kombat, which means it’s very likely we’ll see another installment in that series than in the Injustice series.
With plenty of time before Injustice 3 comes out, baseless speculation can still run wild; especially when it comes to the roster. With so many iconic DC characters available, and not enough space, not everyone’s favorite will make the cut.
However, some superheroes have been passed over in the last two games, and they deserve their time in the sun. So, here are 5 characters who should be in the Injustice 3 roster.
The internet has been asking for Beast Boy, Constantine, and Plastic Man to make it into Injustice for a long time. So, this is just another drop in the well of wishes. But there’s a reason they’re so highly requested.
Beast Boy can turn into any animal he wants. Dinosaur? Yep. Insect? Yep. Tiger? Yep. The sky is the limit for young Beast Boy (as long as it’s an animal of course). A character like that has to make it into a fighting game at least once. The potential for over-the-top combos and killer special moves is just too high to leave him out.
I know nothing about animation, but I’m going to assume animating someone to transform into different animals while they’re in the middle of a fight is a lot of work and very difficult. So, it’s not a huge surprise that Beast Boy has yet to be in the series. If they ever figure it out, however, he will be a welcomed inclusion.
Another fan-favorite character is John Constantine. While Beast Boy’s powers include shape-shifting, Constantine’s powers are all about magic; you can usually find him tangling with demons. But he’s not the average save-the-day superhero. The DC Comics website put it best when they said this about him:
“A notorious con man and grifter whose past has a body count, Constantine's moral compass is as gray as can be.”
This complex sorcerer is just itching to be put in the Injustice series. Constantine has had his own movie before (starring Keanu Reeves) and he was a big part of the CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, so it’s not like this is an obscure, out of left field pick.
Magical characters like Zatanna and Doctor Fate have made it in previous installments, and it’s Constantine’s turn to be the resident magic person of the game.
With how dark the Injustice series can get, sometimes you need a lighthearted, comic relief character. The great thing about Plastic Man is that he can be all that and more. While he can be the funniest and most entertaining superhero of the bunch, he's also a deep character. He’s a former criminal who miraculously gained superpowers and pledged to use them for good.
What are his powers? He can stretch and contort himself however he sees fit. If he wants to wrap himself around criminals to detain them, he can do that. If he needs to fly, he can turn himself into an airplane. With powers like this, Plastic Man has the potential to be the most unique character in Injustice 3’s roster.
In the Injustice story, Superman became an evil dictator. Batman eventually defeats him, and the world tries to move on. This would be the perfect time to debut Steel in the Injustice games.
In the comics, John Irons becomes Steel after the death of Superman. To pick up where the Kryptonian left off, he creates a suit that enables him to fight against even the strongest bad guys. With Superman (potentially) out of the picture, the Injustice series could put a unique twist on Steel’s backstory.
Steel would be a great match for the other characters in the Injustice roster, with his all-powerful suit, his gigantic hammer, and his even bigger intellect. It would also be great if they somehow roped Shaquille O’Neal into voicing the character, considering it wouldn’t be the first time he has portrayed Steel.
Steel has a huge hammer, but Katana has a weapon that’s pretty self-explanatory, considering her name. Injustice 2 had Robin as its swordsman, but it would be great if Katana was the swordswoman for Injustice 3. And she doesn’t just have any random sword, it’s special.
According to the DC Comics website, it’s called the Soultaker Sword. You got to hand it to DC; they like their names to get straight to the point. The Soultaker Sword does exactly that, it takes and imprisons the souls of those killed by it.
Seeing her face off against villains and superheroes turned villains is an opportunity that’s too good to pass up. The DC Comics website encapsulates why Katana should be a part of the Injustice 3 roster with this quote:
“Forever marked by the tragedy that created her, Katana is one of the most formidable superheroes in the DC Universe and a living weapon of justice that all evildoers should fear.
