Too Long; Didn't Read
The open-source sustainability problem has become a burning issue for both OSS developers and software companies. Software companies usually sponsor projects they use, to support the developers behind them, and get better-maintained code. The budget for donations or sponsorship for open source projects, it appears, is often taken from the marketing budget, not the R&D budget as one might expect. The perfect sponsor is a paying client - developers should offer paid products and services on top of their free and open source code.
