Whatever follows, just reflects my understanding of the project, and my personal opinion on its future outlook. Today i will be writing about project and what its set out to do. Mainframe is heavily based on swarm/pss and hence i will go through swarm/pss in earlier part of this article to get some background to mainframe project itself. mainframe What is web3? web3 is simply decentralised web.So traditionally we all have been using web2 which is driven client-server architecture.Than it got enhanced a bit where we use cloud to host our servers.But centralisation still remained.Now we are trying to remove centralisation by using decentralised peer to peer architecture and thats called web3.Indicated below are couple of diagrams from this excellent . article Evolution from centralisation to decentralisation WEB3 decentralised stack Today we will be focusing on messaging aspect in above diagram indicated by whisper,telehash etc. In traditional centralised systems we have many commonly used messaging systems like activemq, kafka, qpid etc.Mainframe is set to provide one for decentralised systems. Iam going to explain about messaging for ethereum in this article.Messaging for other blockchains are out of scope. blockchain Swarm Network Swarm is a network of computers that share data with each other.Swarm network is cornerstone to what mainframe is building or has already built for ethereum blockchain. Swarm uses same p2p protocol as ethereum(devp2p) and the future vision is to have your eth node running both protocols(swarm and ethereum) and part of both networks.Swarm provides services such as file storage(like decentralised dropbox),decentralised database services and PSS(Postal Services over Storm).For this article we are most interested in PSS service provided by swarm. Postal Services over Swarm(PSS) PSS is a node to node messaging layer built on top of swarm network.There is already whisper messaging which is part of ethereum stack but its purpose is different and it routes messages between all nodes making it somewhat inefficient for direct node to node communication. PSS on top of swarm network for node to node messaging PSS uses message format defined by whisper protocol. Receipient address is partially specified in message so that its hard to snoop where the message is being sent to.Only node which are capable of decrypting will be able to read the message(both symmetric and asymmetric encryption are supported).This message forwarding will happen throughout the network till the timeout mentioned in message expires.In case of multicast, there wont be any address in message body and hence all nodes will read the message.You might be thinking that its inefficient way to route messages but devp2p uses something called kadelmia routing which makes this kind of routing efficient.More on that below. So whats the use of these messages?Every message belongs to a topic(remember queue and topic) and you can attach code to be executed to the topic.So whenever a message is published to topic, the code gets executed. Kadelmia Routing This is a kind of routing for p2p networks which uses distributed hash tables to maintain address of nearest nodes present in the network.Important thing here is node wont have connectivity to all nodes in the network but subset of nodes.So routing table of each node will contain addresses of exponentially distanced nodes and not every node present in a network. Kadelmia DHT As you can see in the diagram above, node 0 has addresses of only 1,2,4 and 8 Id nodes.In this way, lookups are very fast and node routing table don’t need to contain references to entire network.More info about how this lookup works are in this excellent video SWAP(Swarm Accounting Protocol for Service Wanted and Provided) SWAP is the accounting protocol using by PSS to incentivise nodes which participate in PSS network. Inspired by state channels, SWARM introduces a secure and scalable off-chain framework to support generic incentive systems playfully called ‘swap, swear and swindle’ games. The system relies on three pillars: communication, registration, and enforcement. (1) Peers engage in a local exchange (p2p communication) of data, promises, payments, messages, requests, deliveries etc. (swap) Peers will relay data between remote non-connected nodes to extend the scope of the network.(2) Participants pay a security deposit to a smart contract to back their promise of delivery and quality guarantees (swear). (3) Rules of service provision are enforced by a courtroom making nodes accountable in case of non-compliance (swindle). Implementation of the above is achieved by using chequebook smart contracts which is offchain payment.So nodes send cheques to each other.In mainframe world,MFT tokens are used to incentivise nodes More details in this excellent and mainframe whitepaper. video MainFrame Now lets focus on mainframe and what problems its trying to solve. Challenges in current day Internet Software :Since TCP/IP stack over which communication happens is easily traceable possible to trackdown where traffic has originated from with great accuracy.This will make it very hard to remain anonymous since geo coordinates can be easily identified. Addressing :Using services such as ,its very easy to takedown domains by centralised organisations such as Domain Name Registry whois ICANN TLS/SSL layer security is provided by like symantec, digicert etc.(Padlock in your browser navbar shows if site is over https and secure.Click on it to know valid certificate details).But issue here is its very easy to get a certificate from these centralised authorities once domain is compromised and someone takes control of it. Certificate Authorities: Certificate Authorities : Current day communication apps and software like whatsapp,skype,slack,gmail,facebook etc all works on client-server architecture and suffers from centralised software problem where all your data is under control of one entity.And thats not a good thing to go by the recent events such as cambridge analytica data hack etc. Communication Apps Mainframe communication platform Mainframe is an unstoppable communications platform that combines the desired features of today’s best networking protocols and applications while also maintaining the highest level of security and user sovereignty. The platform consists of various protocol and transport layers incentivized by token economies, along with software development kits(SDKs) enabling easy integration with a variety of popular languages, operating systems,and devices, as well as smart contracts and oracles for token exchange and ease of interoperability with various popular blockchains. Mainframe is built on Swarm/PSS and uses incentivization scheme based on SWAP protocol as explained above. Whitepaper explains in great lengths about how this incentivazation of MFT tokens works between nodes with useful diagrams. As shown above, a typical mainframe node does all the things which swarm node do within swarm network.It can store chunks of file, provide database services, route packets so on and so forth. TestNet/Proof of Concept Mainframe has done a great job in implementing PSS in real world by providing a slack-like messaging app for mobile and desktop called Onyx. They have demoed it in recent ethereum devcon and you can watch it . here Token Utility(MFT) Mainframe tokens have various uses within the Mainframe ecosystem:- They incentivize the timely and efficient relay of packets between peers.- They incentivize the delivery of packets from sender to receiver.- They incentivize reliable decentralized file storage.- They incentivize reliable decentralized data services.- They can be used as a medium of exchange for marketplaces on the Mainframe platform where digital goods and services can be bought and sold. For my first review I will be going over Sia — one of the players in the decentralized storage space. The cloud storage industry is massive and companies like Sia are hoping to put a dent in the dominance Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have enjoyed over the past decade. _Sia's decentralized cloud is on average 10x less expensive than current cloud storage providers. Storing 1TB on Sia…_sia.tech Sia It took a while but I am finally picking back up on my crypto review series. If you haven't read my previous articles, please check out my intro to . bitcoin _How to dip your toes in from a non-technical perspective…_medium.com Getting Started With Bitcoin And my intro to the crypto review series _“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here…_medium.com Crypto Review Series — Introduction I will write about coins I am interested in, most likely I will own some (I own ~40 different coins now so that doesnt make them particularly special) but in no way is this investment advice — it is generally a way for me to align my thoughts — do your own research before investing!! What is Sia? Basically storage — think dropbox, google drive, etc. The shtick is that it is decentralized, encrypted, peer to peer storage — although, no one party is holding the information you are storing — it is encrypted, multiplied, chopped into little bits, and then all those little bits are sent around to a bunch of different hosts. When you want access to your file, the appropriate bits are recompiled and you get your file. Think of your file as being in a T-1000 type state. “Please SIA, can I have my photo of aunt Judy?” Sia: “One moment” ::ominous noises:: By building the framework and outsourcing the storage to anyone with a hard drive and an internet connection Sia has reduced overhead dramatically and can charge a much lower fee. They multiply the bits in case a node holding a piece of your file happens to be offline (even though they are incentivized not to be). Now for some due diligence People Sia was created by David Vorick and Luke Champine of Nebulous Inc, a VC-funded startup in Boston.The idea of Sia was originally conceived at HackMIT 2013. There really isnt much out there on David Vorick but not in the way that some of these scam coins have shady founders but more in the way where I am assuming he is more head down, focusing on the product. The VC firm seems legit but there isnt really any other crypto (when i checked) in their portfolio. It seems like they could use a marketing/evangelist type. David’s online presence basically boils down to his medium posts and some youtube videos. This one also had the added benefit of talking through the different storage protocols. David jumps in at min 13. I like his tone for as much as thats worth. blockchain Product They have a product & users!! There are two components that set Sia apart from other decentralized storage (STORJ, IPFS) on the pricing side. I have a reasonable understanding of STORJ, still looking into IPFS so these assumptions may not be 100%. Price — Host (those with storage) sets the price they want. Its good because ideally market forces will find the price. Not good because it adds a step and could turn some users off. File Contract — (Jump to min 29 in vid for their revenue model in relation to this) The structure makes a lot of sense, although I think it sacrifices some ease of use for a better incentive structure. I think we may be seeing a theme with Sia……… Product details can be picked up from their website but my take is that they are taking the whole decentralized thing to the max. This is great for decentralization maximalists but I do think it may limit the extent of their adoption. They also tout the redundancy they get from storing file bits across multiple machines and incentivizing hosts to stay online. A blockchain company with a live product? something is amiss I haven't stored anything yet but but this shed some interesting light on the structure. You need to lock some funds up that you can then use to secure storage at whatever rate you are comfortable with. As adoption picks up a lot of the coins will be off the exchanges and locked up. Could lead to volatility of those outstanding or it may just find a nice equilibrium. Something to keep an eye on. Coin Duh Biggest question with all these projects is — Do they reeeeeeeeally need their own token? Sia is issued on the blockchain where they issue the smart contracts. Im sure there are some more nitty gritty details that lay it out but it seems like a reasonable enough reason for a separate currency. Financials Heres what they are touting, directly from their front page Now, this is really only a projection because the host(those with HD space to rent) set their own price (because its decentralized!!!) It looks like from a list of active hosts that the going rate is ~2k SC per TB per month which at current rates (.00000570 BTC @ BTC = 2700 USD) comes out to a bit over $30. I think this is mostly because of the massive increase in price SC has seen over the past month (roughly 6x increase against USD, 4x against bitcoin) and my assumption that these are longer term contracts. I imagine the longer its out the more stable the price will become but as you can see it is truly global in scope so some volatility against USD will remain. I do think their claim in the chart above is a little misleading though since they are assuming hosts will be willing to be paid at that rate. Coin creation There are 26 billion or so SC now, and there will eventually by around 48 billion in 2023. The faster minting is a bit of a concern now but they seem to be gaining adoption at a decent clip. At the current price of 2k SC per terabyte per month when all 48,460,000,000 coins are mined they will have a capacity of 24.23 exabytes. totally knew that I couldn’t find information on exactly how much Amazon is storing total these days but I don’t think this is that crazy of a number. Driverless car, Image recognition, VR, AI, machine learning, other cool buzzwords — what do they all have in common? a need for massive amounts of data. Activity/Transparency Love this — a public Trello board with their roadmap _Organize anything, together. Trello is a collaboration tool that organizes your projects into boards. In one glance…_trello.com Trello There is a lot of useful information on their like the distribution of hosts. Pulse Site and the current prices (I believe those are monthly) They also seem very active in slack answering questions. It seems like David is making the rounds more now but to make the jump they will likely need to bring in some marketing folks. They are VERY open with the project which the community appreciates so if they deliver Im sure we will continue to hear more from them. Conclusion The next step for Sia in my opinion is landing a big partner or some applications built on it to gain some notoriety. My guess is STORJ will be more consumer focused, IPFS is going to land the enterprise projects, and Sia will fall somewhere in between but be popular with the projects striving for true full stack decentralization. I really think some of the “Next 6 Months” items could trigger a jump — video streaming gets people excited, automatic host pricing will make it less manual, and supporting over 10 TB at a time should allow for more applications to be built on it. Crypto Review — Siacoin (SC)

I still remember February 2018 very well. Many people were in a really bad mood when it came to Blockchain or Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), mainly because the price of most cryptocurrencies made a nose dive and the Disillusionment started. Funny enough, that was also the time, when my co-founder Moshe Bar (he became famous as the co-founder of XenSource and Qumranet) had some very interesting discussions how we can solve a real big DevOps-related issue. We wanted to give digital objects a globally unique and meaningful identity without changing or appending something. Achieving Integrity and Trust for any digital asset. If you want to see our projects (free for open source and non-commercial projects) before reading the full story: Github: vcn CodeNotary command line Github: CodeNotary Kubernetes integration CodeNotary website Some background So far, people either thought about checksum for files, source code or container images and best-case to use digital certificates to sign these files (if the file type was supported). While the checksum calculation using sha256 or sha512 is great for the digital fingerprint, digital certificates are not really made to use for any digital asset you can find. Last but not least, digital certificates are definitely not made for the agile world. Quick one - what happens if you revoke a digital certificate: all digital objects signed using this digital certificate are revoked depending on the OS, Application or execution engine, warnings are shown for objects with revoked signatures sometimes, binaries with revoked signatures can't be opened anymore But more important, when do you revoke a certificate? you lost the private key someone stole your private key you don't trust an digital asset anymore you signed And here comes the real issue - if you would start signing hundreds or thousands of digital assets, you don't want to revoke your certificate just because of one or two you don't trust anymore. That also means, most certificates will never be revoked even if they are lost, stolen or untrusted. To sign a digital object that has a revoked certificate with a new valid certificate you need to have access to it and redistribute it. Not just a huge effort - its sometimes impossible. Another reason why revocation is more of a nice idea than a powerful action to regain trust. That makes digital certificates unfit for the solution we were about to build. Here comes the Blockchain In 2018 most people looked the other way when it came to Blockchain (mainly because of the price drop in Cryptocurrencies). We figured, that Blockchain was exactly the technology we needed to achieve our goal of global digital asset identity and trust - without becoming part of the "shady" . certificate authority industry We moved ahead, founded , assembled a team and starting coding from day 1. vChain, Inc. Distributed Ledger Technology When digging into DLT, you quickly realize that many parts are still experimental and the existing tooling is in its early days. Leveraging public blockchains has some major disadvantages, high latency and the use of volatile crypto-currencies are just 2 of them. Our requirements: no crypto-currency or tokens: As we expected loads of digital assets being written to the Blockchain, no-fee transactions were a absolute must no private Blockchain: We didn't want to go into a private Blockchain direction either, as our data required to be public accessible by just connecting to the Blockchain itself no hosted Blockchain: the last thing we wanted was a lock-in from day one and blockchain data migration ... well, long story available talent and tooling: going to exotic also means that developer are much harder to find and most tooling needs to be developed as well always on: from the start Long story short: we decided to go for a consortium blockchain based on Ethereum ( Parity Ethereum ) Zero Trust Consortium Of course you need to start somewhere, so we set up our testnet internally without a consortium, to play around, research the required smart contracts and create the initial architecture. We also approached different companies to start the consortium with - to run a Blockchain for the software industry, by the software industry. To our surprise our Consortium Blockchain idea was of great interest for many companies and in January 2019 we had already set up the Zero Trust Consortium with the Mainnet distributed across 12 initial members that run their own Parity Ethereum nodes. 9 months later, we just crossed the 30 member count. The Zero Trust Consortium (ZTC) is headquartered in Switzerland with off-chain governance in place for new members and runs its own operations, independently from any member. Zero Downtime, No Hardforks, Fully managed. Every software company is welcome to join, run a node or become a contributing member. Let's get back to DevOps and some basics As the foundation for our solution was covered with the ZTC platform, we could completely focus on developing the solution to be released as . CodeNotary When speaking about DevOps, basically a ton of topics are put into that bucket. Procedures, tools, automation, build pipelines, handling and storage of source code, microservices, container, ... the list can go on forever. But the most important parts from a digital asset perspective are: Source Code (code repositories) artifacts (CI/CD, automation) files (configuration, definition, description, documentation) container (images, layer) Our goal from the beginning was to support all of these, without touching them and without disrupting the automation in any way. Of course the integration should be easy to use, easy to integrate and fit for the modern age. We named the process of creating a digital asset identity with a user identity and the process of integrity and trust level verification . notarization authentication Of course before something can the authenticated it needs to be notarized by someone on the platform. CodeNotary Process of CodeNotary notarization calculating a sha256 checksum getting files or object attributes writing the object checksum to the Ethereum-technology-based blockchain including the trust level using the user identity (private key) adding object attributes on a blockchain-protected relational database (CodeNotary backend) success is only returned, when all data has successfully been written to the Blockchain This example shows the notarization of a Prometheus configuration file, but it can be any artefact, a github repo, a docker image or a local directory. If you want to either unsupport (i. e. because a newer version has been released and you want to unsupport the older versions) or untrust (in case you found a flaw, issue or just don't like the object anymore). That way the status on the Blockchain changes as well and can immediately be checked from anywhere in the world. I'll get into that later. vcn unsupport prometheus.yml vcn untrust prometheus.yml Let's also publicly notarize a very common docker container image: docker pull ubuntu vcn n -p docker://ubuntu:latest Important - unlike digital code signing the digital asset is never changed or touched Process of CodeNotary authentication While Notarization is the most important part to get digital assets notarized with the unique identity, a trust level given by the signing user, its important to know that anyone in the world is now able to authenticate the very same digital asset. calculating a sha256 checksum querying the object checksum on the Ethereum-technology-based blockchain (either in general, only for a certain user or if a member of a given organization) Success: You get the digital asset trust level and metadata back Unknown: the digital asset has not been notarized yet Important: No data except the unique checksum is ever uploaded. It not just saves bandwidth, it provides privacy as well. Coming back to the notarized prometheus.yaml file, there are a couple of ways how you can authenticate.
