An Altcoin Perspective Feels amazing to be back after a 1-year hiatus! I recently started my full-time job and have not been so active in data science but I would like to start going at it again. It’s virtually impossible to ignore what’s going on in crypto markets right now and it’s super exciting to explore what we can do here with all the data and opportunities. It’s been a while so I’m starting with something light this round. December 4th Crypto Selloff Crypto markets were hit with a wave of de-risking recently on several possible factors: Fed speeding up the tapering process as inflation no longer seen as ‘transitory’ Omicron fears and U.S job growth slowing Billionaires like Musk and Bezos selling their stocks Evergrande warning it could run out of money rose sharply before the crash (money from wallets to exchanges with possible intention to sell away) Exchange Reserves for BTC Estimate Leverage Ratio for BTC hitting ATHs Exchange Whale Ratio for BTC hitting 3Y Highs Liquidating crypto to lock in profits ahead of holiday season Crypto Feed & Greed Index at Extreme Fear Low liquidity conditions (weekend night, crypto people partying in ) Art Basel Miami Prior to this, the crypto market was on a bull run with all the hype about Metaverses, NFTs, Web3, DAOs and DeFi 2.0; and I wanted to see how the top coins performed after coming off the euphoria into what many would call a bear market or a crash. A Quick Data Collection Process I scraped price data, token images and basic data from for free using python’s requests and beautifulsoup instead of using CMC’s API. I started scraping them when BTC prices were $47,543, which was shortly after the bottoms when things stabilized for a bit. Was busy checking my positions when it all happened… haha. CoinMarketCap Visualizing the data I used plotly which looked great and was easy to use. I also used PIL to store the coin image objects for the plots and sized them up based on their market cap rank. I plotted the daily 24h % price change against the expressed as a percentage, as I wanted to see how far we were from recent tops before this selloff. I also excluded most stable coins to see the other coins better. T-24h Price from 30D High Analyzing the data There are several observations that we can make with a little bit of extra digging: —Ethereum, Polygon & Solana near the yellow line region vs Tron & Bitcoin near the orange region vs XRP, Algorand & Litecoin near the red region vs VeChain & Kadena near the black region. Avax was a surprise outperformer. Large L1 coins dropped even more if they were already further off from recent highs — Axie & Sandbox near the orange region vs Decentraland & Enjin near the red region vs Wax near the black region. Theta was a surprise underperformer. Above applies for Gaming coins too — Uniswap, Chainlink, Dai, Fantom & Loopring near the red region vs Avax, Tezos & Maker near the orange region and PancakeSwap & Wrapped BTC near black region. DeFi tokens dropped the most in the 30% from the recent highs cat, they also happen to be mentioned a lot more in social media recently Above 3 findings could support the argument that . We know the Metaverse narrative has been hot for gaming crypto, and the surge in ETH gas fees has led to a wave of support in other L1s. downward momentum is heavy for categories that were recently very popular — Kucoin, Huobi, FTX & Voyager down about 10–15% (I realized CRO is missing from the scraping..*) CEXs fell the least relative to other coins despite where they were , except for $CEL which is a L&B platform with mcap of $1b, and $NEAR which is an L1 with mcap of $7b. $REV is also in the list but it has fallen so much from 3M and ATHs. Most coins have come off around 30% from recent highs. Most coins have dropped at least 10% — Coins like NuCypher, Velas, Nano & DigitalBits have limited drops to 15% while others like dydx, SKALE & Storj saw drops beyond 25%. Smaller caps see wider volatility in the price fall with the exception of Kadena. Coins that have come off at least 40% from recent highs (black line) are mostly small and under 1b mcap Well, I’m sure you can derive more from this and it is definitely just a starting point for further analysis. Conclusion It seems like there is a very general downward pressure that suggests that the further coins have come off the last rally, the further they have continued to drop in the recent selloff. Visualizing the Recent Crypto Selloff

A Tale of Two Selloffs… “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness … it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…” – Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities Over the past week, we have endured not one, but two brutal selloffs in crypto assets, causing depression among the crypto community and schadenfreude among its many critics. These moves were quite different from each other however, despite being of similar magnitudes with the same elevated trading volumes. Using CoinRoutes data and software tools, we were able to analyze both moves and show that the first fall, which took place on the 14th of November, was likely triggered by a small number of large sellers, likely originating in the OTC market, while the second, which took place on the 19th, was much broader, more orderly, and likely originated on exchange markets. Selloff #1: November 14th To start the analysis let’s look at the chart of the key 12 hour period on the 14th: (This graphic shows the CoinRoutes Consolidated Best Bid and Offer for Bitcoin-US Dollars all the exchanges that accept US clients and trade directly in US Dollars. It also employed CoinRoutes size filter to only include bids and offers that were for at least 5 Bitcoin in order to exclude de-minimus quotes. This move featured a large & sudden price drop that lasted just over 30 minutes, followed by several hours of significant volatility. Ultimately, the market made a bottom at around 5400 in Bitcoin-US dollars that lasted for several days. It is particularly noteworthy that, for the entire 12 hour period in the above graphic, the best bid was higher than the best offer by over 25 basis points. That is shown in the top pie-chart as “Large” crossed situations and it represents opportunities for arbitrageurs to profit from the differences between exchanges. Another noteworthy statistic is the fact that LMAX, despite a relatively low market share overall, was represented on the best offer almost 20% of the period. As LMAX’s strategy is to aggregate market maker liquidity, this statistic makes it relatively likely that OTC trades left the market makers long bitcoin, with a need to sell during the fall. To dig deeper into this, we zoomed in on the chart to the time-period with the steepest drop: This chart shows that, during the sharp fall from 6100 to under 5600, there were substantial arbitrage opportunities. At the maximum deviation point, there was more than a $100 premium between the best bid and the best offer. At that point, and for much of the 30-minute period, the offering price that was leading the market lower was on LMAX. While this is not conclusive proof that OTC trading triggered the fall, the sharpness of the fall would suggest that many professional traders were reacting to market changes simultaneously, so it is relatively likely to have been the case. Selloff #2 November 19th The chart of the November 19th selloff is quite different from the previous chart, however. It does not feature an individual fall as sharp as in the earlier selloff, but is rather a steady slide of even larger magnitude as shown here: Notice first how the selloff is an unrelenting slide, without any particularly steep sections, except a bit towards the end of the period. Second, notice that the upper pie-chart shows that arbitrage opportunities existed for a much smaller percentage of the time at 6.25%. Third, notice that the market makers, as represented by LMAX, were biased towards the best bid and not the best offer during this period. All of these things, taken together, is suggestive of more broad based selling as opposed to being driven by large transactions done in the OTC market. Perhaps more importantly, there was also no evidence of a “capitulation” bottom in the market during yesterday’s selloff, although, as I write this commentary, that might be taking place. Todays price action has featured significant volatility and could be leading towards the type of “washout” price action where real bottoms can be formed. This is the chart of the past 12+ hours of trading: Notice how, as I was writing the paragraph about how we didn’t see a capitulation bottom yesterday, the market dropped suddenly. It fell over 400 dollars (roughly 10%) in less than 30 minutes and the period also featured a significant amount of arbitrage opportunity (22.7%). Perhaps most important, however, is what took place as I quickly used the CoinRoutes software to look at the consolidated order book as that bottom was being reached. I used the CoinRoutes Cost Calculator to see where I could sell 2000 Bitcoin as it approached the bottom and I simultaneously asked the system where I could buy 2000 Bitcoin. The results were very surprising: The cost of buying the coins was over TRIPLE the cost of selling coins, which is a strong indication that the bottom, at least for the short term, was in. Sure enough, the market jumped over 150 dollars after this in a short period of time. This is the results for the hypothetical “Sell” order of 2000 Bitcoin at the bottom, which shows that 2000 Bitcoin could have been sold at a price of 4002.92 including fees, while the best bid was 4064.8: This is the results of the hypothetical “Buy” order of 2000 Bitcoin at the bottom where the coins would have cost 4287.71 inclusive of fees when the best offer was 4048.5: Perhaps more important for traders, however, is that the subsequent rally appears to have been led by this exchange market liquidity. While I was running the preceding scenarios, I was also watching Bitmex, where the price continued to fall for several minutes after seeing the unbalanced order book. This will likely surprise many “professional” traders, who think that the futures markets always lead the spot Bitcoin markets. It is, however, clear that exchange liquidity is very important in the Bitcoin ecosystem and it shows the need for a full depth, consolidated book data feed such as available from CoinRoutes for traders… (For those who are curious, here is the same chart as above, with another 20 minutes of trading tacked on. I am not going to declare that we have seen THE bottom, but it certainly was A bottom, and one that our clients were able to see…)

I decided to turn the anthropological lens onto myself and my relationship by keeping a diary of how these devices facilitate communication between my boyfriend and I when we’re physically apart, as well as at times distracting us from each other when we are together– because, research. February 11th, 2016, from my desk. 11:30 AM Yesterday Rob started a new job, making the jump from being product manager at a startup to corporate culture. At his previous job we would seamlessly communicate throughout the day, checking in every once in awhile to see how the other was doing. Neither of us necessarily saw this as disruptive to our tasks at hand, but rather as a reassuring knowledge that we had support or comic relief just a click away. As we lay in bed last night, I told him that it had made me kind of sad to not get any responses to the messages I sent him throughout the day, even though I understood why. Switching between spreadsheets and Facebook, or frequently picking up his smartphone was no longer appropriate, or at least tolerated, behaviour in his workplace. Now I’m sitting at my desk, two unanswered Facebook messages burning a hole in my iPhone which I glance at constantly whilst listening to Clair de Lune and feeling sorry for myself. Although I believe, or hope, that this is merely a period of adjustment that I’m currently using as an excuse to indulge my more dramatic side. It strikes me that having no messages from him to check or respond to has become considerably more distracting than the occasional amusing comment. 4:30 PM I’ve received six messages since this morning, but two were ‘hi’ and one was ‘ok’ so they don’t really count. In an effort to avoid incessantly messaging Rob while he is unable to respond, I’ve been making mental notes of interesting or funny things that I want to tell him this evening. Maybe this will even mean that we’ll have more to share and discuss in person than usual, or maybe I’ll forget most of these, admittedly, unimportant observations. 9:00 PM I have to say, after all my moaning over a lack of virtual attention throughout the day, we were both pretty terrible at avoiding digital distractions once we were actually in the same room. Although we were sitting next to each other, we were both glued to what was in front of us. In my case that meant watching TV on my laptop while scrolling through furniture sites on my phone, and in Rob’s case his attention was on beating strangers on Rocket League. By the time I realised what was happening it was nearly 11 pm and time to go to sleep, I felt frustrated with both of us, because we should know better. I felt as though the small period of time that we have together at the end of each day had been taken from us. But, then again, I am a bit of a drama queen. In the past we’ve dabbled in rules like ‘no screens after 9pm’, and both saw the benefits immediately, but found it really difficult to stick with. Taking a closer look at a typical day in our relationship has made me realise that implementing rules is definitely a tactic worth revisiting. This diary exercise has made me realise that the connection that digital devices allow when two people are apart isn’t really worth it if we allow them to have the opposite effect when we are together.
