I remember a particular commercial from the 1990’s when the Web was young, and video over the internet was a thing of the near future. In this commercial, a traveler pulls up to a lonely, dusty motel in the middle of the desert and goes up to the front desk. The traveler asks the young woman chewing gum at the front desk if they have HBO or any movies on demand? The bored front desk attendant pops her bubble gum and responds nonchalantly: “We have every movie and TV show ever made, available at any time.” I don’t even remember whose commercial it was (I think it was a telecom company), but most of us who were around at the dawn of the web wondered: is that even possible? It’s taken many years and lots of infrastructure for that promise to be realized: CDNs (content delivery networks), video compression formats, and most importantly, streaming servers and protocols, etc. Today, two-thirds of all internet traffic is video, and a large part of that is from video streaming. If we look at the majority of Internet traffic, the Web as we know it today is really a giant video network with some very big “mega-content” nodes doing most of the delivery. It resembles more of an oligarchy than a democratic model. Video Content Drives Video Costs and Data The video content being delivered started with small videos on sites like YouTube but really reached its peak recently with the popularity of esports streaming (live and on-demand competitive video games) via sites like Twitch, social media, and via on-demand entertainment apps like Netflix and Hulu, which stream full movies and TV shows. This combination of live streaming and on-demand video content has taxed the Internet infrastructure that wasn’t built for a video ready world, both in terms of data and costs/business models. This problem is only getting more acute with time. According to Cisco, video traffic is expected to increase to 80% of all internet traffic in the next few years! Not only are we using infrastructure that is 20-years old for serving video, modern CDN’s are also using outdated “pay per storage” and “pay per bandwidth” models, making content delivery very expensive. Most consumers haven’t been willing to pay for this infrastructure (watching YouTube and Twitch are free while Netflix only charges a few dollars per month). For many entertainment and gaming companies, infrastructure can be upwards of 30%-50% of all operating expenses! Why SLIVER.tv? At SLIVER.tv we’ve been smack dead in the center of this need for better video streaming infrastructure. With our virtual reality solution for esports, we partnered with tournament operators like ESL, Dreamhack, Turner E-League, and others to stream esports tournaments live in spherical 360° video to VR headsets, mobile apps and desktop web. This new format of content, VR and 360°, is even more bandwidth intensive than regular 2D video streams, at times in the order of 10x-20x more. Moreover, we found that video content today must be delivered globally and the existing centralized model falls short in many developing areas of the world. In esports, for example, places like Brazil, Poland and eastern Europe are actually very active locations of esports fans. The CDNs that are US-based don’t have great point-of-presence in these locations, and some viewers in remote areas of these countries are not very well served. What if, we wondered, some of our users, who had high end gaming PC’s and good bandwidth, could relay our video streams to friends and other viewers in their neighborhood? Introducing a Decentralized Video Network: Theta This question, combined with the rising popularity of blockchain and cryptocurrency, led us to launch the Theta coin and network. We realized that this idea, of having someone in a remote location using their spare resources and bandwidth to “cache” and “relay” video streams, could revolutionize the internet delivery of esports, entertainment and many other industries. In fact, it could revolutionize the delivery of all kinds of content! Figure 2: Example of Decentralized Network for Content Creators and Viewers In the Theta network, distributed nodes can earn Theta tokens by becoming “caching” servers. End users can watch these streams being delivered to them by “caching” nodes that are nearby. But more than just a delivery network, any streamer can get on the network and upload their streams for all to watch by leveraging other users which serve as “ingest nodes”, which will automatically convert them into the right formats (different resolutions, bit-rates, etc) and deliver them to the caching nodes. More than just live streaming, the same infrastructure could revolutionize the entertainment industry. A “network” on TV, like CBS or Fox, is just an aggregator and broadcaster of content. In fact, you might think of the TV networks as centralized nodes which send content to distributed super nodes (local TV channels affiliated with the network), who then send it the last mile via local broadcast over the air. Later, this top down model evolved to satellite and cable providers, who then sent the last mile via a physical cable. As the internet has come on-line, these old networks are just starting to adapt to the new world. A decentralized network with no single owner would allow anyone to upload their content. Theta tokens, which will be mined by the network in a new blockchain, will be the currency to allow users to “reward” streamers and content creators directly. This method of gifting virtual currency or goods to streamers has already become popular in China. A decentralized network like Theta has the possibility of cutting out the middlemen — for example, advertisers could use Theta tokens to directly reward content creators and streamers, and potentially viewers for engaging with their content. Even networks like HBO and Netflix and YouTube red, which are subscription networks, could be replaced with completely distributed content where anyone can set the price of their content. This is a “grassroots” approach to creating content and democratically allowing the benefits of that content to accrue to content creators and those who share in the infrastructure costs. All of these led to the idea that our Theta project could be a new blockchain which could have a dramatic impact on how content is produced and distributed. In addition to the infrastructure, there would need to be Dapps (or decentralized apps) to serve the different markets: esports, entertainment, distance learning, peer-to-peer streaming, corporate video conferencing, etc. SLIVER.tv and our partners are uniquely positioned to build the eSports Dapps. There are many other developers who can use our open-source protocol to build new industry and vertical Dapps. Our Unique Two Phase Rollout: ERC-20 tokens and Native Blockchain tokens While the technical details of the network are in our white paper, it will take time 9–12 months to build out the native theta blockchain and release Dapps on top of it. In the meantime, we wanted to make sure that participants in the Theta token offering could use our tokens right away. For that reason, we are releasing an ERC-20 token right away (“Phase I”, starting January 8) that can be used on the SLIVER.tv esports site and will soon be available on other sites. The tokens can be used as virtual gifts to streamers, to purchase virtual items, and as a virtual engagement incentive on the site in exchange for our users attention. The second phase will be in Q4 2018, when we roll out the new blockchain. This is a separate blockchain much like the Bitcoin, Ethereum or Filecoin. At that point, the ERC-20 tokens can all be exchanged for native Theta tokens on the new blockchain. We believe this two phase approach achieves the best of both worlds — a unique new technology for blockchain, and immediate utility for token purchasers. Summary: Why We’re Doing It Thus far, video content which accounts for two thirds of all Internet traffic, has been primarily aggregated by several sites, and the infrastructure costs have benefited the CDN industry. With the launch of Theta, we at SLIVER.tv think that we can democratize the process of creation, distribution, advertising, and viewing of video content with our new decentralized model. This is a different way to think about both the economics and the infrastructure that will power the next phase of the Internet. Suppose a few drops of old milk or some remnants of any kind of food are left in a pot, tucked away where they are hard to get at: these impurities soon turn sour, especially in warm weather, and the milk, finding an acid substance in the vessel, quickly spoils and curdles. How often the milk itself is blamed for this accident when want of cleanliness is the sole cause! 304 “Milk contains three principal substances, namely: cream, or fatty matter from which butter is made; casein, or curds, used for making cheese; and, finally, a substance with a slightly sweet taste called sugar of milk. These three ingredients taken away, hardly anything is left but water. To separate these three, one proceeds as follows: “Left standing in a cool place and exposed to the air, milk becomes covered, sooner or later, according to the season, with a thick oily layer that takes the name of cream. This is the material from which butter is made. It rises to the surface unaided and separates when simply exposed to the air. It is removed with a skimmer. “What is left is skimmed milk, of the same whiteness, the same appearance, as the original milk, but deprived of its fatty matter. Into this skimmed milk let us pour a few drops of some acid, lemon juice for example. The milk turns and thick white flakes are formed. Those flakes are the curd, the casein, in short the material of which cheese is composed.[ ] 305 “After the casein has been removed there remains nothing but a transparent liquid that might be taken for water slightly tinted with yellow. This liquid is called whey. It contains little besides water with a small quantity of sugar of milk which gives it a slightly sweet taste. It is especially in Switzerland that sugar of milk is obtained on a large scale by the evaporation of the liquid that remains after removing the cream and curds from the milk. In spite of its name this substance has nothing in common with ordinary sugar, the white loaf-sugar we use; it is a dull-white substance, rather hard, crunching under the teeth, and of a slightly sugary taste. It is used only in pharmacy. “Cream and casein constitute the nutritive ingredients of milk, and determine its food value. The milk that is richest in these constituents is sheep’s milk, next comes goats’ milk, and last of all cows’ milk. Although of little value to us, sugar of milk claims our attention for a moment on account of the change it undergoes to the great detriment of the milk itself. Little by little, especially when exposed to the heat of summer, this sugary matter sours and becomes an acid. That is what makes milk sour if kept too long. Of course when this sourness shows itself the milk soon curdles. Coagulation takes place as if an acid had been added to the milk. Hence, to keep milk for some time and prevent its turning sour of its own accord, this acidulation of the sugar of milk must be delayed. They may say, “That boy over there is so full of potential” or “That girl is worthless.” Indeed, history shows entire communities and ethnicities devalued to such an extent that it has even paved a path towards genocide. My own father was a refugee, his Jewish parents murdered at the hands of the Nazis in Auschwitz. Right now, the Rohingya people have been displaced by the hundreds of thousands from their homes in Myanmar. While I regard any human life as priceless, it would seem that some people can only relate to their own lives, or to the lives of their friends and families in this way.Much of my work explores how and why we value anything at all, especially when we consider the value of life itself. We say an ancient artifact is priceless too, but surely not as priceless as human life, right? Society has a complicated relationship to that which is priceless.I wanted to explore this further, and found an artistic collaborator in my friend Ai Weiwei, who has brought more attention to the global refugee crisis than anyone else I can think of. He too, is fascinated by the nature of value and identity. We have attempted as an exercise, to make the priceless more relatable to those who find it easier to view everything as a commodity.I have been using blockchain addresses as proxies to distill emotional value for some time now, and with Weiwei we “tokenized” our priceless shared moments together. Some of these moments on the surface might seem banal while others are subtly provocative, but these fleeting moments like :”Sharing Tea” and “Walking In A Carefree Manner Down Schönhauser Allee” or “Talking About The Art Market” are the building blocks of human experience. All moments in life are priceless.Each priceless moment is represented by a unique blockchain address which is “inoculated” by a small amount of a virtual artwork (crypto-token) we created called “PRICELESS” (symbol: PRCLS). Only 2 ERC20 tokens were created for the project, but as they are divisible to 18 decimal places, these works of virtual art could potentially be distributed to billions of people. Furthermore, a very limited series of physical prints were made.One of the two PRICELESS tokens will be unavailable at any price. The remaining token will be divided into 1 million fractions of one token and made available to individual collectors and institutions. These artworks of course may be divided into much smaller artworks as the PRICELESS token is divisible to 18 decimal places. The price of one Bitcoin fell a lot today. Less than a week ago it touched 3000 USD. Today it plummeted down to a little over 2100 USD. To the untrained eye this certainly seems like a huge drop. To those with a short term memory slightly better than your average goldfish though, this is merely a bump in the road hardly even worth noticing. The price was below 1000 USD at the end of March. And 2100 USD compared to one year ago still constitutes a 200% gain. And this is what the Bitcoin price does. It scares away the narrow minded and favors those a bit more patient. Good things come to those who wait as a beer advert once pronounced. That used to be a lie but not anymore. Not for Bitcoin. You see Bitcoin is a limited thing, a scarce resource. Every gain is real and every dip is a buying opportunity. The best time to buy is always Yesterday won’t come back. Remember what got you into this in the first place. Bitcoin is still the world’s first cryptocurrency and it’s still the safest one out there. It’s got the biggest infrastructure, the most hashing power and the most dedicated team of developers, despite all recent efforts to besmirch them. The current scaling issues be resolved, it’s just a matter of time. now. will The best time to sell is never. Use a part of your Bitcoin to realize your dreams but not until you can afford them many times over. Including that private jet and that topless women’s chainsaw juggling team you’ve always wanted. Stay focused, it’s Ignore the naysayers, the doomsday prophets and, perhaps most of all, ignore the bloody altcoins! Most of them are nothing more than a distraction at best. If Bitcoin falls, the house of cards that constitutes the rest of the crypto market will soon follow. After all, Bitcoin is the original experiment. Can we decentralize trust completely? Well, the first thing we’ll have to trust is the that we can. What do you think will happen to all the other cryptocurrencies if Bitcoin fails? No one would trust them anymore. Why would they? They’re all based on the same idea. Everything that can happen to Bitcoin can happen to an altcoin. Greed is universal. all just a matter of time. idea Bitcoin won’t disappear though. If you made some money day trading, congratulations. If you bought at 3000, congratulations. If you don’t have any Bitcoin, congratulations, there’s a discount on them today. Keep your eyes on the prize, not the price. The long term goal is what matters here and when everyone gets it, brace yourselves. Don’t stop being a part of it.
