But he made one condition, that Clever Elsie should be really wise. “Oh,” said the father, “she’s sharp enough.” And the mother said, “Oh, she can see the wind coming up the street, and hear the flies coughing.” “Well,” said Hans, “if she is not really wise, I won’t have her.” When they were sitting at dinner, and had eaten, the mother said, “Elsie, go into the cellar and fetch some beer.” Then Clever Elsie took the pitcher from the wall, went into the cellar, and tapped the lid briskly as she went that the time might not appear long. When she was below she fetched herself a chair, and set it before the barrel, so that she had no need to stoop, and did not hurt her back or do herself any unexpected injury. And after much peering here and there, saw a pickaxe exactly above her, which the masons had left there by mistake. THE AGE OF REPTILES THE AGE OF REPTILES The abundant life of the Carboniferous period was succeeded by a vast cycle of dry and bitter ages. They are represented in the Record of the Rocks by thick deposits of sandstones and the like, in which fossils are comparatively few. The temperature of the world fluctuated widely, and there were long periods of glacial cold. Over great areas the former profusion of swamp vegetation ceased, and, overlaid by these newer deposits, it began that process of compression and mineralization that gave the world most of the coal deposits of to-day. But it is during periods of change that life undergoes its most rapid modifications, and under hardship that it learns its hardest lessons. As conditions revert towards warmth and moisture again we find a new series of animal and plant forms established, We find in the record the remains of vertebrated animals that laid eggs which, instead of hatching out tadpoles which needed to live for a time in water, carried on their development before hatching to a stage so nearly like the adult form that the young could live in air from the first moment of independent existence. Gills had been cut out altogether, and the gill slits only appeared as an embryonic phase. These new creatures without a tadpole stage were the Reptiles. Concurrently there had been a development of seed-bearing trees, which could spread their seed, independently of swamp or lakes. There were now palmlike cycads and many tropical conifers, though as yet there were no flowering plants and no grasses. There was a great number of ferns. And there was now also an increased variety of insects. There were beetles, though bees and butterflies had yet to come. But all the fundamental forms of a new real land fauna and flora had been laid down during these vast ages of severity. This new land life needed only the opportunity of favourable conditions to flourish and prevail. A FOSSIL ICHTHYOSAURUS, A MESOZOIC FISH-LIZARD Found in the Lower Lias in Somersetshire Nat. Hist. Mus. Age by age and with abundant fluctuations that mitigation came. The still incalculable movements of the earth’s crust, the changes in its orbit, the increase and diminution of the mutual inclination of orbit and pole, worked together to produce a great spell of widely diffused warm conditions. The period lasted altogether, it is now supposed, upwards of two hundred million years. It is called the Mesozoic period, to distinguish it from the altogether vaster Palæozoic and Azoic periods (together fourteen hundred millions) that preceded it, and from the Cainozoic or new life period that intervened between its close and the present time, and it is also called the Age of Reptiles because of the astonishing predominance and variety of this form of life. It came to an end some eighty million years ago. In the world to-day the genera of Reptiles are comparatively few and their distribution is very limited. They are more various, it is true, than are the few surviving members of the order of the amphibia which once in the Carboniferous period ruled the world. We still have the snakes, the turtles and tortoises (the Chelonia), the alligators and crocodiles, and the lizards. Without exception they are creatures requiring warmth all the year round; they cannot stand exposure to cold, and it is probable that all the reptilian beings of the Mesozoic suffered under the same limitation. It was a hothouse fauna, living amidst a hothouse flora. It endured no frosts. But the world had at least attained a real dry land fauna and flora as distinguished from the mud and swamp fauna and flora of the previous heyday of life upon earth. A PTERODACTYL Nat. Hist. Mus. All the sorts of reptile we know now were much more abundantly represented then, great turtles and tortoises, big crocodiles and many lizards and snakes, but in addition there was a number of series of wonderful creatures that have now vanished altogether from the earth. There was a vast variety of beings called the Dinosaurs. Vegetation was now spreading over the lower levels of the world, reeds, brakes of fern and the like; and browsing upon this abundance came a multitude of herbivorous reptiles, which increased in size as the Mesozoic period rose to its climax. Some of these beasts exceeded in size any other land animals that have ever lived; they were as large as whales. The Diplodocus Carnegii for example measured eighty-four feet from snout to tail; the Gigantosaurus was even greater; it measured a hundred feet. Living upon these monsters was a swarm of carnivorous Dinosaurs of a corresponding size. One of these, the Tyrannosaurus, is figured and described in many books as the last word in reptilian frightfulness. A BIG SWAMP-INHABITING DINOSAUR, THE DIPLODOCUS, OVER EIGHTY FEET FROM SNOUT TO TAIL-TIP Nat. Hist. Mus. While these great creatures pastured and pursued amidst the fronds and evergreens of the Mesozoic jungles, another now vanished tribe of reptiles, with a bat-like development of the fore limbs, pursued insects and one another, first leapt and parachuted and presently flew amidst the fronds and branches of the forest trees. These were the Pterodactyls. These were the first flying creatures with backbones; they mark a new achievement in the growing powers of vertebrated life. Moreover some of the reptiles were returning to the sea waters. Three groups of big swimming beings had invaded the sea from which their ancestors had come: the Mososaurs, the Plesiosaurs, and Ichthyosaurs. Some of these again approached the proportions of our present whales. The Ichthyosaurs seem to have been quite seagoing creatures, but the Plesiosaurs were a type of animal that has no cognate form to-day. The body was stout and big with paddles, adapted either for swimming or crawling through marshes, or along the bottom of shallow waters. The comparatively small head was poised on a vast snake of neck, altogether outdoing the neck of the swan. Either the Plesiosaur swam and searched for food under the water and fed as the swan will do, or it lurked under water and snatched at passing fish or beast. Such was the predominant land life throughout the Mesozoic age. It was by our human standards an advance upon anything that had preceded it. It had produced land animals greater in size, range, power and activity, more “vital” as people say, than anything the world had seen before. In the seas there had been no such advance but a great proliferation of new forms of life. An enormous variety of squid-like creatures with chambered shells, for the most part coiled, had appeared in the shallow seas, the Ammonites. They had had predecessors in the Palæozoic seas, but now was their age of glory. To-day they have left no survivors at all; their nearest relation is the pearly Nautilus, an inhabitant of tropical waters. And a new and more prolific type of fish with lighter, finer scales than the plate-like and tooth-like coverings that had hitherto prevailed, became and has since remained predominant in the seas and rivers. The Golang programming language brings together the speed of developing applications using a dynamic language such as Python with the security and performance present in a compiled language such as C or C++. With Go, typical builds can be completed instantaneously — even bulky binaries can be compiled within a few seconds. Why developers love Go Google’s Go programming language has been winning the hearts of most developers. Primarily, it’s an open source language, something which has opened it up for development to the larger community. Go’s lightweight nature has made it the darling of developers building various applications. It has been developed to address the weaknesses of the traditional languages while natively making the most of the modern hardware infrastructures. The app was valued at a whopping $5.6 billion and raised as part of a series D funding round from well known VC’s such as and among others. Although the company started out as a trading platform for stocks, it later launched a platform for trading crypto assets. Robinhood Fortune $363 million Sequoia Capital Kleiner Perkins Coinbase is a San Francisco based digital currency exchange that distinguished itself by allowing its users to directly buy crypto using fiat currency. Coinbase is known to be flush with capital and is often at the forefront in acquisitions. The exchange managed to raise a whopping as part of a series E funding round in 2019 from VC’s in the crypto space such as Andreessen Horowitz among others. Coinbase $300 million Is this the end of the road for retail investments? Not exactly. An ICO is not exclusively for raising funds, it also doubles as a mechanism to distribute tokens among retail investors, developers, and crypto-enthusiasts. Consider a messaging platform or a payments platform powered by Blockchain, an ICO can give the platform the initial nudge of users it requires to get off the ground and proliferate. In light of this, even though startups seem to be swaying towards professional investors to raise funds, the probability that retail investors will be utterly cut off are slim.

ICO Funding Strategies decoded: ICOs turn the tables in 2019!

Dockless bikes (bikesharing) are taking world by storm. The two biggest players in the game — Ofo and Mobike, had been in the market for less than 3 years but has combined dominated the Chinese market with 95% market share. And they achieved the status with a lot of battle scars by outdoing everyone in the space. The below screenshot was published around April of 2017, many of these don’t exist anymore: Ofo and Mobike are now aggressively launching services across the globe, both targeting to be in 200 cities by the end of 2017. Though not profitable just yet, it is very impressive. For people who just started trying out dockless bikes for the first time, including the journalists at , it is perhaps a wild concept to think about how many iterations it took to get to what they are seeing, and how much more room there is to enhance the designs. Washington Post and had separately released the designs of their next generations of bikes recently. It seems like a good time to review the different designs they have put out over the years (in China). fundamentally influenced what they have put out for the users. Ofo Mobike The differences between Ofo and Mobike’s launching strategies Ofo Think Ofo as the the Android of bike. Ofo won over the market with quantity. This is the first iteration of bikes Ofo put out on the market — Pay attention to 3 things: the numbered plate in the front, under the seat, and the lock. The original lock was very primitive that it takes a 4 digit combo you fetch from the Ofo’s database. Since the combo doesn’t change, a lot of people would either black out the QR code/numbers on the plates, or simply remove the lock all together and use their own personal locks to “privatize” the shared bikes. Perhaps the goal was just to get marketshare, so vandalizing was somewhat tolerated by Ofo at the time. It has become a lot harder to spot these on the streets of Shenzhen now as they are getting phased out in the market. This model has also often encountered a lot of wear and tear (intentionally and unintentionally) that most riders make a conscious effort to avoid if there are other options. Then it comes generation 2.0 of the bikes — While most of bikes remain the same with some of them having baskets and some without, the thing to pay attention to is how much the lock mechanism has been improved. The lock system is a copy of the lock system of Mobike but there still seems to be 2 iterations of that with the first still needs to punch in 4 digit number code to work, some do open automatically, like Mobike’s. Then comes generation 3.0 of the Ofo bike. It is the latest ones I’ve encountered on the market— Not only does it have a slicker body design, notice the new break disks add-on. The seat on the bikes got an upgrade as well. With things like GPS locationing, SIM cards, and barcodes/QR codes at different spots on the bikes, Ofo can take a better operational approach in managing the efficiency. This iteration of the lock system removed buttons altogether. The lock opens automatically once authenticated. Also notice the bike chain received a makeover as well. Ofo ditched the traditional metal chains and opted for a plastic timing belt design. Aside form 1.0/2.0/3.0 versions, Ofo also put out a small number of fun looking bikes for marketing purposes: Mobike Think Mobike as the Apple iOS in the bike space, they focused tremendously on product designs from day 1. (Note: this section contains photos taken from ) www.shejipi.com The 1.0 “Classic Edition” challenged convent in its own right from the very beginning: Smart lock, SIM card, GPS locationing, mechanical power generation, including remote 15 minute reservation functionality on the app — It’s not hard to see how much time was spent thinking about the longevity and overall continual maintenance with the one sided frame and the wheel mount assembly — However, all of the hard work was not without a hitch: the seat too low and unable to adjust, the seat cushion too stiff, no basket, and most importantly hard to operate due to the weight. In addition, feeling the squeeze from competitors as the bikes cost ¥3,000 RMB (~$450 USD) each, Mobike rolled out the Mobike Lite in parallel before the next version of design — Mobike Lite only cost a few hundred RMB ($45–60 USD) each in comparison. Went with the traditional wheel design, traditional metal bike chain, but remain firmly with the smart locks. The most intriguing part are the plastic non-inflatable tires On 11/16/2016, both Mobike Classic and Mobike Lite received an upgrade. While the upgraded Mobike Classic 2.0 (left) remained a similar look, Mobike Lite 2.0 (right) got a bit of a facelift — The non-inflatable tires were abandoned among other esthetic changes. (Mobike Lite left, Mobike Lite 2.0 right) Now, what’s neat about the upgraded Mobike Classic is the new adjustable seat: The new airy basket: To reduce weight with visible new break disks and new kick stand, to not visible others that reduced weight by overall 30% (Old designs on the left, new designs on the right): Key Observations What is very surprising to me after doing the analysis is how relatively short the life cycles are of the bikes. A new design of the bike gets released every 9–12 months. Personally experiencing how fast the new versions of bikes get rolled out on the ground, it’s about 4–6 months with 60–70% replacement rate. To keep up with the type of roll out frequencies it requires quite the operational efficiency. It takes a fairly sophisticated supply chain, and one that probably has to be close to the manufacturing source to pace with the iteration. As Ofo has not shown any signs of slowing down with global expansion with partnerships like that with , neither is Mobike. For Ofo and Mobike at least, the overseas markets probably would not cycle the inventories at the frequencies seeing in the Chinese market. China would likely remain as the testing ground to roll out new bikes. Rihanna Some back of the napkin math, assuming rolling out 100,000 new bikes at 250–3,000 RMB ($40–450 USD) each, it means a capital expenditure of $4–4.5M USD (depending on the price to make each bike). Not every company can afford spending that kind of money. Finally, looking at the US market as Ofo and Mobike started to make an entrance and heating up the competition, it makes me question the path forward for locally grown companies like (founded in November 2016, live in 3 US cities(?), $8M raised) and (founded in March 2017(?), live in 8 US cities, $12M raised). How are they going to be able to achieve economy of scale and generate enough revenue to survive? Population density would play a huge factor. China has 60+ cities with 500 people/km² (1300 people/mile²), US has about 10, so it’ll greatly affect what would be possible. Spin LimeBike Compare to hyper-localization, Singaporean player Obike is using hyper-international expansion strategy (founded in January 2017, live with 20+ cities, spans 11 countries, $45M raised) and cherrypicks cities with the population density. Is the play acquisition targets or mass international consolidation/alliance? and , there will be very little the other players would be able to do to compete since there’s very limited localization variation compared to traditional software products. Ofo is in talks to raise $1B USD Mobike closed a $600M USD round in June 2017 At the end of the day, globally speaking, when thinking about the dockless bike/bikesharing industry, Ofo and Mobike will be the #1 and #2 leading the pack, with #3 far behind in the foreseeable future. A very similar winner take most scenario seen in the sharing economy space.
