Laravel Octane There are many benefits to using Octane, such as improved performance, reduced resource usage, and the ability to scale horizontally. However, there are also some caveats to be aware of before using Octane in production. In this article, we'll discuss the opportunities, benefits and caveats of using Laravel Octane to scale a Laravel application. What is Laravel Octane and how does it work? Laravel Octane is a tool that speeds up the serving of Laravel applications. It does this by reducing the amount of time it takes to compile and serve individual requests. It does that by booting your app once and then keeping it in memory to speed up requests faster than ever before. Under the hood, it uses Open Swool, Swool, or Roadrunner to boot the app and serve it. Open Swool or Swool Swoole is a software development kit that enables developers to create high-performance, scalable network applications. Open Swoole is a fork of the Swoole framework, which started in late 2021 because of some disagreement inside the developing community of swoole. If you want to dig deeper into what swoole is, you can read about it . here Roadrunner RoadRunner is an open-source (MIT licensed) high-performance, serviceable PHP application server that can be used to replace classic Nginx setups with much greater performance and flexibility. It is written in Golang. With Swoole or RoadRunner in place, we now have a worker for each incoming HTTP request. This means that only the first one will bootstrap our Framework (including all service providers) while every other can make use of a ready-to-go worker-instance, which is what makes it so insanely fast! The benefits of using Octane to scale Laravel applications Octane speeds up Laravel applications by caching data and objects in memory. So even with no other alterations to hardware or infrastructure, Laravel Octane can improve the performance of your app by up to 30%. This gain is achieved by eliminating the disk reads, process forks, and other overhead associated that happens when the framework is booted up on every request. That way, Octane can handle thousands of concurrent connections with ease. This makes it ideal for applications that receive a lot of traffic or need to be highly available. On top on that, this cost-effective way can be expected to be liked by any business, start-up or enterprise. In a best-case scenario, you don't even need to make changes to your codebase. But this depends heavily on how your application is structured. Potential caveats of using Laravel Octane If you're thinking of using Octane to scale your Laravel application, there are a few things to be aware of. Octane is not compatible with all Laravel applications. In particular, it doesn't work with applications that use session states or certain types of middleware. Finally, while Octane can improve performance, it won't necessarily solve all your performance problems. If your application is already struggling to keep up with traffic, Octane may not be enough to save it. In that case, you'll need to consider other options, such as horizontal scaling. There are other options available that may be more suitable for your needs. Here are some alternatives to consider: More hardware = more performance Just to mention it, we do not recommend this. This is the easiest, the least cost-effective, and the least future-proof method of scaling: Just throw more hardware performance at your project. This has the obvious downsides of higher running costs, the need to migrate to a different server, and the fact that you are not able to scale on demand with this setup. Nginx Load Balancing with or without AWS To build a scalable web application with Laravel on Amazon Web Services, AWS can be used to automatically scale the app to several instances that share one MySQL database. All of these servers would use one Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS). Scaling with AWS has been around for some time and it works well. But its costs can sometimes not be transparent. Compared to Octane, this goes with the same principle of how it works, but it is not as effective as Octane would be. A benefit is definitely that you can scale your existing code as-is. No Octane-specific changes are needed. Conclusion Laravel Octane is a great way to scale your Laravel application. It's easy to use and can improve performance without needing to make changes to your codebase. However, it's not compatible with all applications and may not be enough to save an already struggling app. If you're considering using Octane, be sure to do your research and consider all your options before making a decision. Scaling Laravel Applications with Octane

Are high-end consumer-grade GPUs good for Stable Diffusion inference at scale? If so, what would be the daily cost for generating millions of images? Do you really need A10s, A100s, or H100s? In this benchmark, we answer these questions by launching a fine-tuned, Stable Diffusion-based application on SaladCloud. We scaled up to 750 replicas (GPUs), and generated over using 3.62 TB of storage in for a total cost of . The result: 9.2 million images 24 hours $1,872 By generating , this benchmark shows that generative AI inference at-scale on consumer-grade GPUs is practical, affordable, and a path to lower cloud costs. In this post, we'll review the application architecture and model details, deployment on SaladCloud with prompt details and Inference results from the benchmark. In a subsequent post, we'll provide a technical walkthrough and reference code that you can use to replicate this benchmark. 4,954 images per dollar Application Architecture for Image Generation This benchmark was run for a SaaS-style, generative AI image generation tool for custom artwork. The end-users browse through categories of fine-tuned models, select a model, customize the prompt and parameters, and submit a job to generate one or more images. Once generated, the images are presented to the end-user. We helped develop the inference container to demonstrate the potential of SaladCloud nodes for this use case. The following diagram provides a high-level depiction of the system architecture: The major components include a web-based application (frontend and backend), a dedicated job queue, an inference container, and a block storage service. Azure Queue Storage was used for the job queue and provided FIFO scheduling. Azure Blob Storage was used to provide the block storage. Although SaladCloud allows for more targeted node selection, we decided to allow the scheduler to take the first available nodes with a compatible GPU based on unused network capacity. Future Improvements This demonstration yielded exciting results showing that for Stable Diffusion Inference at scale, consumer-grade GPUs are not just capable but more cost-effective. That said, it was far from optimized. There are a number of technical tasks we could undertake to improve performance. Notably, we quickly implemented the worker and settled on a loop that sequentially pulled a job, generated an image, and uploaded the image. With this implementation, while we wait for network I/O, the GPU sits idle. If we took an approach that pipelined jobs, eagerly pulling an extra one from the queue and parallelizing the network I/O with another image generation request, we estimate at least 10% improvement on overall job throughput. Without adjusting the total cost, this would push us up over 10M images generated in a day. Generative AI and Inference Cost Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content, like paintings, music, and writing. It works by learning from existing information to develop a model of patterns and relationships, and it has practical applications in generating unique and personalized content. It has become an increasingly popular technology thanks to the release of a number of open-source foundation models, many of which are developed on very large-scale datasets. Combined with the relative ease of developing and applying fine-tunings and the low-cost to run inference at-scale, the democratization of generative AI is unlocking new applications at an incredible pace. Specifically related to inference, many models still require significant computational resources to efficiently generate content. However, the leaps in processing power and resource capacity of consumer-grade GPUs have caught up with many applications of generative AI models. Instead of turning to large cloud computing providers and competing for scarce access to enterprise-grade GPUs like A10s, A100s, or H100s, a growing number of customers are turning to SaladCloud, a distributed cloud computing environment made up of the world's most powerful gaming PCs. If you've recently become interested in the web3 space, you may have encountered the idea of decentralized governance. You probably have some intuitions about what it can mean, but if you want to explore what's behind the name, we have you covered with this short article. What is decentralized governance? Let's break it down: what does actually mean when it comes to governance in web3? decentralization It's quite possible the first thing you think of when it comes to decentralization is a way of organizing government. This kind of decentralization occurs when decisional power is handed down to various levels of government, instead of having the power concentrated in a single central authority. This helps with preventing the overuse of power by a single entity, fighting corruption, increasing representation, and can improve efficiency. This is not far off the ideas you may come across in the web3 space. One of the reasons web3 brings decentralized governance to the table is part of a wider push to change the  paradigm on which Web 2.0 was built. Cognitive capitalism and the network effect promote the formation of monopolies and shape the Internet in a top-down fashion: tech is built to increase the possibility of commodifying information. You can now see that decentralization seems to be a natural response to the accumulation of decision-making power in individual entities and an approach that gives Internet users a chance to regain digital sovereignty. Though is used for many things, perhaps the most popular manifestation of it being cryptocurrency, there is an increasing focus on how the tech can be used to manage and organize. People can participate in funding projects, running communities, and shaping ideas through new mechanisms that champion the ideas of decentralization. blockchain technology Where and how decentralized governance happens Decentralized governance gets put into practice in Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (or for short). As the name suggests, these communities gather together based on the idea of distributed decision-making power. DAOs When it comes to DAOs oftentimes they carry some kind of economic incentive: creating digital decentralized venture capital funds, raising money for specific purposes, or creating new tokens. But DAOs can also be to set the development path of a given protocol or platform. There are several frameworks that allow for DAO management, including DAOStack, Colony, Aragon, DAOHaus, and Boardroom. Importantly, decentralized governance operates on two levels: off-chain and on-chain. As the name suggests, off-chain governance takes place "off the chain," meaning that decisions are made informally outside the code base of the blockchain (e.g., on forums, social media, etc.). In the DAO space, there are platforms that allow for off-chain voting, such as Snapshot, a decentralized voting system based on the IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) protocol, or Gnosis Safe. Similarly, on-chain governance takes place within the blockchain. Compound Governor or Tally can be used to conduct on-chain voting, to just name a few. When it comes to voting, the most popular set-up with decision-making in decentralized communities is tied to owning a token. This is called coin voting and though obviously it has perks, it also comes with an array of challenges. Token-based governance is vulnerable to vote-buying and bribery, is susceptible to a certain types of attacks on the organization, and is often linked to low participation and short-termism. This can all lead to "whales," wealthy governance token holders, having the ability to promote their preferred proposals, even if it goes against the preferences of the community (you can read more about these challenges in this ). post There are alternatives out there. Among these, you can find new (or old, but updated) voting mechanisms, like quadratic voting (QV). In QV voters are allowed to allocate a certain number of tokens to express their preferences on a given proposal. The caveat here is that the cost of allocating additional tokens to a given proposal increases quadratically with the number of tokens already allocated. You can opt for a model based on voting tokens with a quorum, in which a certain number of DAO members must participate in the vote for it to be considered valid. There is also the concept of liquid democracy - a form of delegated democracy in which a DAO member can delegate their vote to a representative (this model has been implemented in the Gitcoin DAO), as well as holographic consensus. Broadening the horizons of decentralized governance With new ideas in decentralized governance growing day-by-day, we need a space for experimenting with them and seeing how they work put to the test.
