SBINFT: Pioneering NFT Integration in Japan's Gaming and Manga Giants In the latest installment of our "Behind the Startup" series, we sit down with Jangdeok Ko, the visionary behind SBINFT, Japan's pioneering public chain NFT marketplace. From his early days as a financial engineer to diving into the world of blockchain and NFTs, Ko shares his insightful journey, the evolution of SBINFT, and how it's carving a unique space in the digital landscape by leveraging Japan's rich intellectual properties. Ishan Pandey: Hi Jangdeok Ko. Welcome you to our "Behind the Startup" series. Please tell us about your background and your journey building SBINFT? After building my career as a financial engineer, I worked as a producer of various internet services at a major Japanese IT manufacturer. Later working as a mobile game producer, I started the blockchain business in 2018. Jangdeok Ko: Initially, I operated a mobile app version of the wallet service, but later focused on NFT. Since around 2019, NFT has gained recognition because of the blockchain games, and at the same time, it quickly established its status by being used in art. Japan is an IP powerhouse. There are many IPs that are popular around the world, such as in games and manga. I was convinced that as awareness of NFT spreads, Japan's leading IPs will utilize NFTs. In 2021, SBINFT became Japan's first public chain NFT marketplace. Ishan Pandey: According to you, what sets SBINFT apart from other NFT marketplaces? Further, what is your strategy for expanding the user base for SBINFT marketplace? SBINFT released Japan's very first public chain NFT marketplace, SBINFT Market, which has been gaining trust. Jangdeok Ko: A major game developer representing Japan will release a game on the Oasys chain this year, and with high evaluation of SBINFT Market's track record, we have formed a partnership with a major game developer for SBINFT Market to become the first secondary marketplace to distribute NFTs in Japan. SBINFT also allows credit card payments between users in secondary distribution. This is with the intention to increase the liquidity of multiple-game NFTs scheduled to be listed this year. In particular, in Japan, the ownership rate of crypto assets is very low compared to major overseas countries. However, there are many high-quality gamers. We will expand our user base by continuing to expand functions to make it easier for such game users to start playing blockchain games. Ishan Pandey: What challenges did SBINFT face during the transition from a wallet-focused business to becoming an NFT marketplace, and how were they overcome? In Japan, a license is required to sell tokens or provide token swap features. When SBINFT started its blockchain business, it was unable to prepare a license due to a low budget. Jangdeok Ko: As a result, we could only provide smart contracts for trading tokens with NFTs, and could not monetize from them. In order to overcome this, the previous CEO who was promoting the wallet business resigned, and I became the CEO, and we shifted to the NFT platform business. In 2021, we released Japan's first NFT marketplace "nanakusa." Ishan Pandey: Could you elaborate on the decision to rebrand "nanakusa" to "SBINFT Market" and later focus specifically on blockchain games? What drove these strategic shifts? SBINFT launched Japan's first NFT marketplace "nanakusa" in 2021 with 100 official artists. Currently, approximately 200 official artists belong to and are active in the group. Jangdeok Ko: Looking at the Japanese market from then, the NFT market, which focuses on NFT artwork, has not expanded. This is because traders did not correctly recognize the value of NFT artwork. However, once the game-specialized chain “Oasys” is released at the end of 2022, the domestic market suddenly became excited about blockchain games. At the same time, major domestic game studios began to enter the market one after another. As Japan's first and trusted NFT marketplace, we strongly believe that SBINFT is in a position to take the lead in expanding the excitement of the blockchain game market, and has changed its strategy to focus on blockchain games. Ishan Pandey: Given the increasing interest in blockchain gaming, how does SBINFT plan to capitalize on this market trend and attract major developers to its platform? SBINFT's strengths are in its outstanding name recognition in Japan's Web3 market and the high reliability of the SBI Group brand. With this capability, SBINFT will work with game developers to expand the market, build an ecosystem for blockchain games, and aim to become a portal service for blockchain games with a large user base in the future. Jangdeok Ko: In the ecosystem, we will also contribute to maximizing the liquidity of game NFTs through the SBINFT Market. We also have more partners and a wider range of payment methods than our competitors. We will take the lead in market expansion and build an overwhelming position by actively working toward numerous partnerships. Ishan Pandey: With the recent announcement of "SBINFT Mits," how do you envision NFTs transforming digital marketing for companies, and what role does SBINFT aim to play in this evolution? For companies, it is difficult to start a business related to new technology or adapt to new tools. Especially when starting an NFT project, specialized knowledge is required, and in many cases, it is necessary to use a wide variety of tools. As a result, there are cases where implementation is slow due to concerns about a decline in business efficiency due to the dispersion of management tools. Jangdeok Ko: On the other hand, in the field of NFT projects conducted by companies, there is a need for a one-stop Web3 service that can generate synergistic effects with their own products and services while maintaining operational efficiency. We believe that we can contribute to the process of NFTs becoming normal in society. Jangdeok Ko: Since the launch of the beta version in September 2023, SBINFT Mits has gained 41 companies and projects as its launch partners, including major domestic companies. These projects are high-quality NFT projects that even Web3 beginners can participate with confidence. SBINFT believes that increasing the number of these high-quality NFT projects will ultimately lead to greater public education and awareness. SBINFT also believes that there are two reasons why many companies and projects have become launch partners of SBINFT Mits. First, SBINFT Mits provides a wide variety of easy-to-use functions necessary for NFT project management even for Web3 beginners. Second, companies that have adopted it can start using it stress-free while maintaining operational efficiency, and can focus their resources on improving customer loyalty through direct communication with NFT holders. Jangdeok Ko: For humanity to gain new and innovative experiences, it is necessary to create an ecosystem that can achieve deregulation in each country, utilization of companies, and returns to users. Ishan Pandey: With the regulatory landscape for NFTs evolving globally, how does SBINFT proactively address compliance, and what steps are being taken to ensure that the platform adheres to regulatory frameworks, especially in light of the unique challenges posed by the NFT market? Since 2020, piracy and fraudulent projects have been on the loose. Many services have been created that allow anyone to freely issue NFTs regardless of the rights of IP holders, creating a market with pirated copies and scam projects. Jangdeok Ko: Although the distribution of pirated NFTs has decreased recently, they have not yet been completely eliminated. Technically speaking, we have not yet found a way to stop it. This situation is not favorable from the perspective of major IP holders. In today's "Behind the Startup" series, we delve deep into the entrepreneurial journey of a serial innovator who has seamlessly navigated his ventures from airlines to luxury fashion. He's revolutionizing the world of Web3 and is on a mission to onboard 1 billion users by 2030. Join us as Jack Vinijtrongjit unveils how experiences across various sectors influence the vision of AAG and what lies ahead for the Web3 economy. More Than Just an SDK: How AAG is Redefining Web3 User Experience & Bridging the Wallet Gap Ishan Pandey: Hi Jack, great to have you here for our "Behind the Startup" series. As a serial entrepreneur, you have extensive experience in creating platforms for different sectors. Can you share some insights on how your past experiences are helping shape the vision and execution of AAG? Ishan, thanks for having me on the show. I’m a big fan of the series. You’re quite right to point out that I’ve worked across a number of different sectors and verticals. I think this has helped me as an entrepreneur, but, to be honest, I don’t think working across different industries – in my case, everything from airline to luxury fashion – is necessarily something exclusive to founders. Jack Vinijtrongjit: The key to making these experiences build on one another, however, rather than being unrelated areas, is to find lessons you’ve learned in one domain and apply them to another. Like Steve Jobs said, you’ve got to figure out how to join the dots. Everything I’ve learned in my previous work has led me to what we’re doing with AAG: Not just the practicalities of founding a company, but the importance of figuring out a strong vision to build around and then providing the tools to make it possible to create it. For example, I think having a strong foundation is very important because it allows us to be able to test out ideas quickly. Everything we built is modular, so while the idea may not work, we still end up with another component we can use for the new idea. You just need a guiding north-star vision to decide what you’re trying to do and how it fits together. This is how we execute ideas at AAG. Ishan Pandey: As an individual with a background in enterprise software architecture and development, how do you intend to use this expertise to simplify access to the Web3 economy and achieve your goal of onboarding 1 billion users by 2030? To get to that kind of number, the fastest way is to go the enterprise route and work with companies that already have a large user base. Imagine working with a telco company that already has 70m users. In that case, you have the opportunity to onboard a large chunk of users in one go. However, while that’s great for us, it could also be viewed as a risk by them. Large companies serving an enterprise market are, totally understandably, cautious about embracing bleeding edge technologies in some cases. Jack Vinijtrongjit: They have to do the right things by their users – and that user base is very likely to contain lots of people that aren’t early adopters excited about new technology for new technology’s sake. As a result, they want to work with companies that can de-risk the opportunity for them – to make it a very cheap experiment with very little time to go-to-market, without causing disruption to their existing businesses. Once you can get to that point and arm yourself with a range of use cases they can easily understand and see validated, it becomes a no-brainer for them. Ishan Pandey: Given your time at TIBCO Software where you worked on large-scale integration projects across various sectors, how does this experience inform your current strategies in developing and deploying AAG’s platform? Selling to enterprises is all about presenting a solution to a problem. You can have the best product, but by itself, that may not be good enough. We also need to align ourselves with service integrators who are already working with a lot of their clients and arm them with tools that they can use to onboard them to Web3. Imagine having 10,000 developers actively using your software because it makes their lives easier and their clients happy. That’s what I have learned from my days at TIBCO, and that’s how we are intending to scale. Jack Vinijtrongjit: Ishan Pandey: Can you elaborate on the specific ways AAG aims to achieve what you just described? Sure. One recent example we have is our MetaOne Wallet. Our users love using our wallet because it’s much easier to use and they feel much more comfortable because we took away the complexity of managing seed phrases and private keys. Those were major pain points we see with other solutions in the same space. However, we also understand that businesses want to control the user experience and eliminate the need to have an external wallet. So what did we do? Jack Vinijtrongjit: We used the existing components we used to create MetaOne Wallet and created MetaOne Embeddable SDK. Now businesses and service integrators can use the SDK as a tool to enable Web3 aspects of their business. Ishan Pandey: How is your SDK different from something like Magic or Venly? Remember when I told you that for a business to venture its way into Web3, it must be cheap and easy, with minimal disruptions? That’s exactly what we did. You essentially get everything MetaOne Wallet provides, including all the UI. If you have not developed a wallet before, you would not have known that 60+ screens are required to provide comprehensive flows. That’s a lot of time taken away from developers being able to focus on their core features. Jack Vinijtrongjit: Ishan Pandey: That’s great. Seems like that will help save a lot of time. Are there any other reasons why developers should pick MetaOne SDK? It depends on what they do. One thing that I think will be quite common across is what we call Shared Mode. Let’s do this. Take your phone out and tell me how many apps you have installed. Jack Vinijtrongjit: Ishan Pandey: I would say at least 70. Imagine if they are all Web3 dApps. If they all use Magic or Venly, you will end up with 70 wallets because they are bound to the dApp even if you use the same credentials to sign up. Most people can’t even manage one bank account. Imagine having to manage 70. Imagine gas fees in 70 wallets: it’s a nightmare. So while a lot of SDKs allowed dApp to solve UX problems, it actually ended up creating one major UX problem. With the Shared Mode that we support, users have control of their own wallets and can choose to use the same wallet with any dApp, just like how you use a standalone wallet like MetaOne or MetaMask. Jack Vinijtrongjit: This also enables businesses to have insights into users’ behaviours since activities are on-chain. If a new user always starts with a new wallet, they would have no clue how to personalize the journey until they have collected enough information. Ishan Pandey: That sounds like a big problem to me. I’m surprised that popular SDKs are not addressing this. With that said, having a wallet per dApp is also safer, right? What if someone makes a mistake? Wouldn’t they lose everything? That’s actually a very interesting point. For us, we prefer the preventative measure. We have many security measures that warn users if they are about to do something wrong. You can actually try to go to a website like Chain Abuse and try to send ETH to one of those blacklisted addresses. You will find that we will give a very strong warning that you should not. Anyway, they also have the option to create a new wallet within the same account if they so choose. It’s more about providing control to the users. It allows us to develop and deploy new software quickly. Without having this kind of framework, it will be very difficult for a junior developer to jump in and contribute for example. A bona fide Matrix; a digital utopia where all is possible, everywhere, all the time, in high definition clarity. We crave a decentralized Metaverse, but Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite, and whatever hell-scape Meta comes up with, are bringing about the Metaverse in the minds of our children, advancing the technologies as they do it and shaping where the narrative goes next. Therefore, it is useful to be familiar with how to call these commands efficiently from your Python code and know their limitations. In this short article, I discuss how to use the older (although still relatively common) command and the newer command. I will show some of their potential risks, limitations and provide complete examples of their use. os.system subprocess External commands might be an attractive option for small tasks if you are familiar with them and the pythonic alternative would imply more learning/implementation time. However, Python functions will save you time and trouble in the long run. Having read the book years ago and being enthralled by the captivating virtual world Earnest Cline created, I initially did not expect any movie to live up to my own imagination. After recently watching the Stephen Spielberg film adaptation of Ready Player One (RPO), I was blown away by the gorgeous and vivid detail the CG artists were able to create. It far surpassed any of my wildest imaginations and brought to life the virtual reality world of the Oasis. In the Oasis, people are able to escape from their dystopian real-life into a beautiful virtual world that unlocks limitless opportunities and the ability to become whomever they want. This world is further characterized by a vibrant virtual currency that holds more economic value than any real world currency. Sound familiar crypto-enthusiasts? The truly meta aspect about this movie is that it comes at a unique point in time where our own world and emerging technologies are not terribly far from the world described in RPO. While many have recently written about how advancements in virtual reality and technologies can create this virtual “Heaven”, I argue that these technologies are only half of the equation. Over the past decades there have been countless online games and social-media apps that are essential social experiments we can glean useful human-centered design insights from. To dive into this design thought experiment to determine what it would actually take to create the Oasis, let’s first assume the following: blockchain We are in the year 2025 and Virtual reality headsets along with haptic suits are amazing. We’ve finally solved all of the optics that make us dizzy and have achieved the feeling of total immersion. Headsets are everywhere and you can buy one for $30 at Target. Blockchain ledgers have achieved that perfect balance between decentralization and transaction speed. As a result, we now have a world computer that is not owned by any one centralized entity with transaction speeds of up to 100,000 transactions per second. Economic design In the Oasis, players are able to earn digital currency and transact with it inside the virtual world as well as in the real-world. Similar to the definition of fiat currency today, digital currency within the virtual world has value because a tipping point quorum of supply and demand has occurred. The economic landscape of the Oasis is further shaped by the opposing philosophies of the creator — James Halliday and the profit driven IOI corporation. In many respects, these opposing forces of creating quality content vs the need to monetize are ever-present today in online games as many companies have mulled over whether to be a “free” game that makes money from in-game microtransactions, or a fixed subscription. Traditional games have taken the approach of creating all of their content and capturing that value through a one time payment for the game (remember all those N64 cartridges) or a monthly subscription payment like World of Warcraft. These games generally target hard-core gamers who have a certain appreciation for the quality of the content. On the other side of the spectrum, corporations such as Zynga have tapped into black-hat gamification techniques (essentially gambling motivations). If you’ve ever played FarmVille or Zynga Poker you may have experienced how this game is able to pull in casual crowds and use a data-driven approach to inject you with just the right amount of dopamine. One specific example is in how they’ve figured out the exact timing on poker decisions. On every hand you have something like five seconds to make a decision which generally means that the majority of players are going to make lots of mistakes; thus resulting in them losing their fake chips and wanting to buy back in via their credit card. Similar to Zynga, Activision Blizzard has also had a greater focus on monetization in the past decade. While they have implemented many (lockboxes, in game skins, dungeon keys, boosters, content unlocks, etc.), they are known for some legendary games that are the culmination of some of the best writers, artists, and developers in the world. As a result, they have also dealt with the same economic decisions of whether to capitalize on micro-transactions. At one point, Blizzard with allowing items in Diablo III’s auction house to be traded for real-world-cash. Because Diablo III isn’t focused on end-game content but rather more focused on getting better loot by grinding the same game content on harder difficulty levels, the introduction of this sort of auction house fundamentally changed the primary motivations of the game. All of a sudden players could figure out how to buy better gear on the auction house which resulted in players not actually playing the intended game (killing monsters for loot). This resulted in decreased enjoyment of the gameplay and was a key lesson which led to Blizzard ultimately shutting down this experiment all together. monetization options experimented These lessons tie into the world of the Oasis as James Halliday’s primary motivation was to create an engaging world with a first set of games that appealed to intrinsic motivations of meaning, accomplishment, exploration, and empowerment. While some form of crypto tokens could mirror the currency that exists in the Oasis, it’s important to note that the initial game design would require a careful balance between monetization and quality content so as to not destroy the elements that make such a world engaging in the first place. This is a key lesson as this next wave of gaming companies such as and attempt to build games and platforms that take advantage of the decentralized nature of blockchain and crypto tokens. While it’s fun to imagine the combination of VR, blockchain, and crypto tokens being the answer to how such a world could be created, I argue that the advancement of these technologies is only part of the equation. Cryptons Chimaera Game mechanics and content The other part of the equation involves all of the little design decisions that go into a great user experience. To paraphrase my UCLA screenwriting professor, Richard Walter, he would express to us how his biggest pet peeve was whenever some average Joe would pitch to him their amazing movie idea. While a one liner movie idea may seem ingenious, the reality is that the elements of a great screenplay are not that one idea, but rather the implementation of that vision via sight and sound. Similar to a great movie, an engaging virtual world like the Oasis would require a certain level of quality content initially to establish a steady user-base. Arguably, Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG’s) are the closest thing to a world like the Oasis in our current day. To make a great game, designers have to account for how to engage users at various stages in the game’s life cycle. Earlier on in the onboarding phase, players need to feel empowered by being able to level up quickly as well as feel immersed in an epic world that is tackling issues larger than themselves. Towards the middle of the game, players have mastered the basic skills and now look to continue to level-up, obtain new items, experiment with talent trees, and explore new worlds. Finally in the end-game, players have probably experienced most of the story — Player vs Environment (PvE) — content and now will be more focused on completing accomplishments and obtaining the rarest end-game items to bolster their character. Depending on the game, the design may be more focused on skill (Player vs Player games like Starcraft, DOTA, First Person Shooters, etc.) or more focused on leveling and obtaining items. Regardless of whether a game is focused on PvE, PvP, or a blend of both, there are so many psychological design details. For example, did you find it a bit extreme that if a player dies in the Oasis they lose ALL of the gear and resources they have on them? For those of us that played classic games like or we remember vividly how frustrating it can be to lose all your progress on a given level if you die. There’s a reason that most modern games have dialed the exact amount of punishment for when you die to make dying something we want to avoid but at the same time not so extreme that we lose all our progress. On the other hand, the ability for a player to store all of their most prized possessions in a bank like an asteroid, and only carry with them what they need could potentially work. Battletoads Donkey Kong, article When you design a game and continually layer on new stories and features similar to what the Oasis evolved into, the combination and complexity of these design details increase exponentially. Similar to a well-designed city that is able to scale and stand the test of time, well thought out online games that can continue to evolve while maintaining its core tenets are few and far between. While I’m only scratching the surface of the plethora of design details, you can see with this one example that there is an incredible amount of research and thought put into a simple game mechanism we take for granted. Social design To stand the test of time, providing the right tools for players to create their own user-generated content and events is perhaps the most important element of the Oasis’ metaverse. In the book, players are able to meet their friends in user-generated virtual spaces. The most memorable example of this shown in the movie being the gorgeous disco club where the two main characters go on their first date. While many modern MMORPG’s need to have engaging PvE dungeons and world events to keep players engaged, the social design elements allow players to go beyond the bounds of the original game and connect at a deeper level with other players. Once upon a time in my own formative teenage years, I experienced this first hand in hanging out at the gates of Ironforge within the World of Warcraft where many of my friends would just hang out, chat about random things, duel each other, and inspect each other’s gear. Although many MMORPG’s no doubt have a vibrant social element to the game, the virtual experiences that most mirror the vision of the Oasis can be seen in the recent rise of VRChat and the decentralized virtual spaces created by High Fidelity. VRChat takes a lot of the best features of Second Life and provides a much more immersive experience as players are able to fully customize their own avatars as well as create their own worlds. With the rise of popular youtubers and twitch streamers, has experienced a critical mass of players that have given rise to many random social experiences. For example, one group of players decided to all create pikachu avatars and play a game where they could dance in a club and randomly shock each other. While this seems so random, there is a certain appealing element to being able to express your identity however you want and experience a sort of cathartic release of expression. VRChat Similar to VRChat, High Fidelity has a similar vision in creating user-generated virtual spaces in which the creators of these virtual spaces could throw their own events such as concerts. Whereas VRChat has focused on a centralized solution that pushes the boundary of what’s possible in a social VR experience, High Fidelity has taken a longer approach to set-up the technical for vast decentralized user-generated worlds that can be monetized by the creator. This is very much similar to the decentralized nature of the Oasis as it allows for businesses to create their own content with the Oasis . foundations technology While this idea seems like science-fiction when you watch the movie, there is actual precedent for virtual real-estate in a game called Entropia. The most extreme happened when Jon Jacobs made history by selling virtual property for a reported total of $635,000. Ultimately these examples show that there is a real appetite for virtual social experiences where people can express themselves and feel part of a community. What’s ironic is that even though we live in a “connected” world via social-media tools, there’s an argument that we live in a time where people feel more isolated as many of the joys of randomly hanging out have been substituted with a highlight feed of your life. The easy answer could be how about we just hang out in person more, but if you’re separated by a continent, then hanging out in a VR experience that better serves people’s need to connect is a future vision I can buy into. example Conclusion If we play this thought experiment where we assume all of the necessary technology is in place to create the Oasis metaverse, it becomes apparent that the combination of underlying technology represents only half of the picture. It’s not enough to conclude that if you build a decentralized world computer combined with a crypto token that the vision of the Oasis will come to fruition. The other half we take for granted is that there are a multitude of product design decisions that have to be balanced as we think through monetization, content, and social interaction. My own theory is that the vastness and ubiquity of the Oasis will stay in science-fiction; however, if there is a VR experience that comes close, it will start small with some great initial content and slowly build momentum. After reaching a critical mass, this world could begin to become more decentralized and allow for more creative user-generated content. We have to remember that a unified user-experience (essentially one portal) is key to creating a balanced world. It’s the same reason why we mainly use Google as a starting point to surf the web or why Facebook destroyed MySpace. Ultimately the chaos of a decentralized world needs to be balanced with a consistent user experience of a well oiled organization like Google, Facebook, and Blizzard. Without this consistent UX central hub to explore decentralized worlds, the reality is that we’ll have a bunch of decentralized platforms with very little people in them.
