Before blasting off to space, Jeff Bezos was a regular guy. He had an office job and even hated it too! Bezos was a former Wall Street hedge fund executive who analyzed the greater possibilities of investments via the internet. Examining the trends led him to realize that there was vast potential for growth and sales on the Web. He then quit his job and let this entrepreneurial spark guide him to the development of one of the most successful companies in the world: Amazon. Seeing how big of a platform Amazon currently is, it is mind-blowing to think about its beginning. The Garage Bookstore Jeff Bezos left his profitable position at an investment bank to create a startup company back in 1994. After thorough research, he made a list of what possible products could be lucrative to sell once they went online. With a degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and a handful of staff at bay, he initially launched Amazon as an online bookstore from his garage. The company’s name was inspired by the largest river in the world — akin to Bezos’ aspiration to become the largest bookstore worldwide. This move was, in fact, a marketing strategy since it would always be listed higher in numerous alphabetized lists, thus garnering more attention. Initially, Amazon was able to rake in around $610 million as of 1998 from just being an online bookstore. Eventually, the company expanded by allowing third-party sellers on this platform to pave the way for consumers to access unique and rare items online. Since then, Amazon has become the web giant we know and love today. Amazon currently has merchant partnerships with multiple companies, logistical services, and even numerous product lines and services. Because of its various products, the company’s market value as of 2021 has become $1.557 trillion. How the Business Came to Be This company used strategies to set itself apart from its competitors. We’ll examine some of them now: “Get Big Fast” Mindset Intending to be the largest online bookstore back in 1994, Bezos implemented the “Get Big Fast” Strategy. This maximized the growing potential of the internet by allowing third-party sellers to start selling electronics, video games, software, toys, games, and home items. Below are the three main concepts under this mindset: 1. Personalization Equals Profitability Despite the growth Amazon has acquired over its first few years, it still was a common online platform. So to set it apart, Amazon fine-tuned its online services to allow the platform to recommend new products based on the algorithm of a consumer’s purchase history and data from similar buyers of each item. 2. One-Click Buying Back then, Amazon had its leverage to make sure consumers felt they were directly purchasing from Amazon despite the number of sellers. But how does one-click buying fit into this picture? Unlike its competitors back in the day, Amazon allowed its consumers to complete their payments or transactions without leaving the platform. This created a user-friendly environment that fostered convenience and ease at just a click of a button. 3. Seller Fulfillment As a component of online shopping, sellers play a crucial role in facilitating service delivery. Amazon took pride in supporting sellers in their earlier years by innovating ways to ensure that their products could reach the end-users. They allow sellers to stow their products in their massive warehouses known as fulfillment centers. Amazon is then responsible for logistics, customer service, and product returns. These alone are cost-effective strategies that aim to support small businesses on the platform. Marketing Strategies Aside from the physical aspects of this online platform, the success of Amazon may also be grounded in its marketing and sales tactics. Let’s take a look at a few strategies employed by the company. Customer Obsession Compared to their competitors, Amazon developed a reputation for being “customer-obsessed.” The platform consistently provides a wide array of merchandise at low prices at the customer’s convenience. Their focus to deliver the best experience paved the way for developing a system that constantly analyzes and tests market opportunities in the digital world. It even fostered the creation of their loyalty program — one of their key features to date. Having thrilled customers creates an engaging atmosphere that makes them keep coming back for more. Optimized and Targeted Emails Amazon decided to send email campaigns that covers new releases and recommendations catered to each customer. In addition, they wanted to decrease the frequency of sending multiple emails in a week to benefit consumers. Partnerships are Key To further expand its coverage, Amazon was smart in investing in its merchant partnerships from different sectors. As a result, it has become a great way of facilitating promotion and product distribution worldwide. In turn, this led to the development of a performance-based incentive system that encourages Amazon affiliates to sell more products. What Can We Learn from Amazon’s Success? : Data processing has always been key in driving Amazon’s success in the industry. With the data adequately processed, the company can experiment through their test groups and evolve current features before being released to the public. Value of data and processing Experiments are necessary to iron out the kinks of projects before launching. But keep in mind that despite numerous experiments, there may be opportunities bound to fail. One must then be able to take these lessons and adapt to an ever-changing environment. Don’t be afraid to experiment and fail: : Customers always appreciate whenever these types of platforms pursue their best interests. This may be in the form of creating a user-friendly interface down to providing details that will keep the customer’s mind at ease. Be customer-centric Can you imagine that Amazon began as an online bookstore? One of the superpowers Amazon deployed was that it was ok to disrupt its own business. It was never comfortable with where it was, and it was never ok with “average”. Never underestimate the power of ideas and critical thinking and being able to uproot and disrupt your own business, as this may be the boost & advantage your business needs. Innovate, innovate: Final Thoughts Amazon is now one of the largest e-commerce platforms that took advantage of a then-growing industry. Lessons Straight From the Amazon Playbook

Over the last month, virtually all of the world's tech giants from Facebook and Microsoft, to Tencent and even Yandex have made announcements about new features that will bring their companies further into the metaverse. This will be the next generation of the internet, where our offline lives will become more and more intertwined with our online ones through 3D representations, immersive digital environments, and graphically enhanced social networking. The way we will interact with this new reality will be broader than we can imagine. It won't just be about our phone and our computer, but about new interfaces we can hardly yet envision. These will include smart glasses that will present us with an augmented reality - designed to inform and to entertain - that will pop up in our everyday lives. Other wearable technology will go everywhere with us, collecting data, but also giving us the ability to do things that today would seem like science fiction. In this new metaverse, we are told, we will soon be doing most of the same things we do today, whether it will be online or offline. Gaming is one of the first things that will move into this new world (actually, with Decentraland and The Sandbox, it already has), and other forms of entertainment will soon follow. Simultaneously, we'll see the arrival of e-commerce. With time, there will come along regulated industries, and even medicine, where you will interact with healthcare professionals in virtual environments. On the one hand, this all sounds fantastic. It's exactly the kind of virtual wonderland we've been waiting for since the popularization of the AR/VR concept. On the other hand, it raises certain problems. Chief of these are those issues relating to fraud: In a virtual world where everyone is hidden behind a digital mask, how can you tell who's who? When payments are being made for virtual land or for concert tickets, how are we going to be able to make sure the receiver is the person who paid for them? With so much identity data being collected in the metaverse, how are we going to be able to tell what's right and what's wrong? Certainly, fraud prevention schemas that are in place today won't be up to the task. Identity Fraud: The Internet's Oldest Nemesis For as long as there has been the internet, finding ways to establish network participants' identities and eliminate fraud has been one of the most active areas of innovation. The early days of the World Wide Web, when networks were small and people were ready to share their real names and addresses via email when carrying out transactions, lasted only a short time. By 1995, sites like eBay were fulfilling a need not just by listing items up for sale, but taking on the risk of the item people paid for never actually making it to its final destination. Of course, risk didn't need to stay with the platforms for long, and soon there arose insurance companies that issued policies for individual purchases. Some people reading this article might be old enough to remember having the option to pay to insure a purchase when buying something on online auction sites and early e-commerce marketplaces. Fintech, eventually, presented itself as the guardians against risk of fraud online. Today, payment processors like Stripe, PayPal, and Dwolla have taken on the responsibility of verifying the identities of those who send payments and those who receive them online. Banks and credit card companies participate too, with all these companies working together to collect identity documents from users, verify them, then authenticate payments through things like 2-factor authentication. In the metaverse, however, the identity checks that have been put in place over the last decade in order to reduce fraud may just not be enough. By entering this virtual world, we're going to be moving into a reality that includes much more of ourselves than just our payments. Telemedicine, for example, is very likely to become the dominant way we interact with our health care providers. We will attend classes in digital classrooms and we will need to prove that it's really us taking the tests - not a stand-in - in order to receive university credit. Technology is well on its way to enabling people to mask their appearances and voices with hyper-realistics skins and computer generated audio. People, in general, will want to know that the individuals they are interacting with are who they say they are. AI, Deep Learning, and Advanced Neural Networks The main difference between fraud prevention in the Internet of today and that of in the metaverse of tomorrow is the vast amount of data that needs to be analyzed. Interactions in the virtual worlds that will soon be our home will occur at literally every step. Technology will need to be implemented that can manage all of this data analysis. Of course, the number of files that needs to be analyzed at the current moment is far larger than anything that could have been imagined only ten to fifteen years ago. For this reason, each time you open a bank account or apply for a loan online, the photo you are asked to send of your passport or driver's license is analyzed using artificial intelligence. Sometimes, regulated platforms today may ask for you to take a selfie to compare to your document - AI is used here too. Some companies have even figured out how to verify who you are by analyzing video clips. Interestingly, this technology is even being used to carry out job ! interviews In the metaverse, these technologies will have to be improved upon, fast. Not only will the algorithms need to get better through machine learning, but technologies will need to be developed that can apply things like audio, textual, and behavioral analysis to everything we write, say, and do - in real time. This will take a kind of efficiency in computing that has yet to ever be achieved, and will likely lead to progress with neural networks that has barely ever even been theorized. Improving on the AI/ML of Today How long it will be until we get a true 'metaverse' of the kind promised to us by Zuckerberg and the like is still up for discussion. Ultimately, a whole host of technological and ethical problems need to be resolved before we can really move into our future digital homes. Sam Altman, CEO, and founder of OpenAI, published an essay with HackerNoon in 2017 titled where he makes the case for a Universal Basic Income (UBI) system in the US: American Equity I think that every adult US citizen should get an annual share of the US GDP. Altman’s essay has taken on renewed relevance with OpenAI’s recent launch of ChatGPT, an that you can sign up and try out for free . amazingly and terrifyingly good chatbot here Throughout "American Equity” Altman does not once mention the words “ ” or “AI”. However, I think it’s reasonable to interpret his essay in this light. UBI I don’t think of UBI in terms of pros and cons. In a few years, or perhaps a few decades, it will be a must. Namely to deal with two issues: (1) technological inequality and (2) technological unemployment in the face of the ongoing AI revolution. As Altman alludes to in "American Equity”, new technologies will create an overflow of abundance and displace a meaningful percentage of the current workforce.  UBI is the only fair response to increased automation so that (1) everyone gets a share of the abundance instead of a fragmented techno-elite and (2) the people whose skills are no longer needed can be compensated. Before we dive deeper, it’s worth remembering that UBI was almost implemented in the US under the Nixon administration.  Let’s take a quick history lesson with Rutger Bregman from his bestseller book ” ”. Utopia for Realists When the US Almost Implemented UBI It was the summer of ’69, the end of the decade that brought us flower power and Woodstock, rock ’n’ roll and Vietnam, Martin Luther King and a feminist revolution. It was a time when everything seemed possible, even a conservative president strengthening the welfare state. In the wake of promising research on UBI and young people demonstrating in the streets all over the world, five young economists, John Kenneth Galbraith, Harold Watts, James Tobin, Paul Samuelson, and Robert Lampman, wrote an open letter to Congress which was published on the front page of The New York Times: “The country will not have met its responsibilities until everyone in the nation is assured an income no less than the officially recognized definition of poverty.” The letter was signed by 1200 fellow economists. The following summer, President Nixon presented a bill providing for a modest basic income, guaranteeing a family of four $1600 a year (equivalent to roughly $10,000 in 2016). According to Nixon, the baby boomers would do two things deemed impossible by earlier generations: put a man on the moon (which had happened the month earlier) and eradicate poverty. A White House poll found 90% of all newspapers enthusiastically receptive to Nixon’s plan. In 1970, the plan was approved by an overwhelming majority in the House of Representatives. Political commentators expected it to pass in the Senate as well. However, in the Senate Finance Committee, doubts reared up concerning the ambitious nature of the proposal, while the Democrats pushed for an even higher basic income. In the end, an agreement between the parties could not be reached and the bill was canned in 1970. And again in 1971. After 1978, the hope for an American basic income plan was squashed once and for all. New findings from an experiment in Seattle that found divorce rates jumped to more than 50% under a guaranteed basic income program. Other findings such as better school performances and improved health were overshadowed by the fact that a basic income gave women more independence.  A reanalysis of the data ten years later revealed a statistical error had been made, and that there were in fact no changes in the divorce rate at all (the paper is ).  Nonetheless, UBI discussions in the US faded into oblivion. here Here we are more than fifty years later. As I said in the introduction, I don’t think of UBI in terms of pros and cons. I think it will be necessary for regulators in the US and other countries to adopt a basic income system in one form or another. Let’s take a look at issues of technological inequality and technological unemployment in turn. Technological Inequality Earlier this year, I did a fair amount of research on UBI in the face of the AI revolution. The most convincing and hard-hitting piece of writing I came across in support of UBI was by the anarchistic think tank/collective CrimethInc. Honestly, there are too many good quotes from this essay to choose from. But their main argument is this: The Mythology of Work For hundreds of years, people have claimed that technological progress would soon liberate humanity from the need to work. Today we have capabilities our ancestors couldn’t have imagined, but those predictions still haven’t come true. In the US we actually work longer hours than we did a couple generations ago—the poor in order to survive, the rich in order to compete. Others desperately seek employment, hardly enjoying the comfortable leisure all this progress should provide. Despite the talk of recession and the need for austerity measures, corporations are reporting record earnings, the wealthiest are wealthier than ever, and tremendous quantities of goods are produced just to be thrown away. There’s plenty of wealth, but it’s not being used to liberate humanity. Altman’s “American Equity model” could mitigate this problem. As he writes: “ Automation holds the promise of creating more abundance than we ever dreamed possible, but it’s going to significantly change how we think about work. If everyone benefits more directly from economic growth, then it will be easier to move faster toward this better world.” Altman also recognizes the issue of technological inequality: “The default case for automation is to concentrate wealth (and therefore power) in a tiny number of hands.” I would argue that it is not automation but capitalism that concentrates wealth in a tiny number of hands. Capitalism creates “ ”. Named after a famous quote from the Gospel of Matthew: “For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.” The Matthew Effect Altman recognizes this effect when he says: Today, the fundamental input to wealth generation isn’t farmland, but money and ideas — you really do need money to make money. In other words: if you have money you can have more, if you have none, you are left poor. Automation is now a vehicle for capitalism that accelerates “the Matthew Effect”. What we refer to as “automation” today is often an expression of capitalism on steroids: “Techno-capitalism”. The King Rules All On a related note, I am sure that CrimethInc felt the ruthless power of techno-capitalism after they were r last month, . The suspension came hours after a tweet from conservative journalist Andy Ngo in which he accused CrimeThinc of being associated with Antifa and said that the “group operates like ISIS: makes propaganda & training material to radicalize militants toward violence”. In , Musk had told Ngo to report  “Antifa accounts” directly to him. banned on Twitte allegedly by Elon Musk himself a public exchange on Twitter , they received an email from on the morning of the suspension saying the company had “received a complaint regarding your account,” but had “investigated the reported content and have found that it is not subject to removal under the Twitter Rules.” This suggests that the ban was dictated by Musk directly without regard for Twitter Rules. According to CrimethInc Twitter Now, I am not going to be the moral judge of Elon Musk,  or say whether he was right in suspending the account.  I know some people despise Musk and a lot of people absolutely adore him. So much so that riding a rocket ship with a goat’s body (since he is the G.O.A.T) and placed it at Tesla’s headquarters in Austin. a group of die-hard fans build a $600.000 large statue of him However, even if you are one of those people who have a framed picture of Elon Musk on your nightstand, there is a larger issue here that should be acknowledged. One man has the power to singlehandedly silence people in a social network with hundreds and millions of monthly active users. Regardless of Musk’s supposedly good intentions with acquiring Twitter, the social platform is evidently not an open town square, but more like King’s Landing where the King rules all with the help of a few trusted advisors. This story comes as an anecdotal side effect from a much larger, global reality: A few individuals on top of the technological pyramid hold practically all of the power and resources. We call this technological inequality, the widening gap between rich and poor, powerful and powerless, in the age of technology. This dynamic would be flattened out over time if everyone had a small piece of the collective gains from increased automation. Altman says: (..)we all work together to create the system that generates so much prosperity. We contribute not only with our time but also with our data. Our data is used to train AI models which will eventually take over some of our jobs. So why should everyone not benefit? Technological Unemployment A pair of Oxford University researchers in 2013 that 47% of the total US employment was at high risk of automation within a decade or two. indicated that up to 39 million Americans could lose their job by 2030 due to automation.  World-leading AI experts Kai Fu-Lee predicted in 2018 that we would be technically capable to automate 40-50% of jobs in the United States within ten to twenty years. The exact numbers can be disputed, but surely the advancement in AI, machine learning, and robotics, will continue to make larger and larger claims on the labor market made an early prediction A report by McKinsey & Company from 2017 The phrase “technological unemployment” was coined by John Maynard Keynes in his essay “ ” (1930). Keynes describes technological unemployment as  “a temporary phase of maladjustment” while “mankind is solving its economic problem.” He predicted that the standard of life in progressive countries would be between four and eight times as high in a hundred years. As a result, people would have their needs satisfied, so they could “devote further energies to non-economic purposes.“ Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren Keynes’s prediction about increased living standards seems more or less to hit the mark. Our “economic problem” has still not been solved, but the prospects of a UBI could perhaps change that outlook. As Sam Altman writes: American Equity would create a society that I believe would work much better than what we have today. It would free Americans to work on what they really care about, improve social cohesion, and incentivize everyone to think about ways to grow the whole pie. Upskilling and reskilling workers are of course important considerations in the short term. But so is eradicating poverty. Which is increasingly made possible by the automation of a wide array of tasks that frees up wage-earners time and employers’ money.  Keynes was optimistic about this development that he foresaw a hundred years ago. Here is a great quote to end with: I look forward, therefore, in days not so very remote, to the greatest change which has ever occurred in the material environment of life for human beings in the aggregate. But, of course, it will all happen gradually, not as a catastrophe. Indeed, it has already begun. The course of affairs will simply be that there will be ever larger and larger classes and groups of people from whom problems of economic necessity have been practically removed. The critical difference will be realised when this condition has become so general that the nature of one’s duty to one’s neighbour is changed. I’d like feedback on the following idea. I think that every adult US citizen should get an annual share of the US GDP. I believe that owning something like a share in America would align all of us in making the country as successful as possible — the better the country does, the better everyone does — and give more people a fair shot at achieving the life they want. And we all work together to create the system that generates so much prosperity. I believe that a new social contract like what I’m suggesting here — where we agree to a floor and no ceiling — would lead to a huge increase in US prosperity and keep us in the global lead. Countries that concentrate wealth in a small number of families do worse over the long term — if we don’t take a radical step toward a fair, inclusive system, we will not be the leading country in the world for much longer. This would harm all Americans more than most realize. There are historical examples of countries giving out land to citizens (such as the Homestead Acts in the US) as a way to distribute the resources people needed to succeed. Today, the fundamental input to wealth generation isn’t farmland, but money and ideas — you really do need money to make money. American Equity would also cushion the transition from the jobs of today to the jobs of tomorrow. Automation holds the promise of creating more abundance than we ever dreamed possible, but it’s going to significantly change how we think about work. If everyone benefits more directly from economic growth, then it will be easier to move faster toward this better world. The default case for automation is to concentrate wealth (and therefore power) in a tiny number of hands. America has repeatedly found ways to challenge this sort of concentration, and we need to do so again. The joint-stock company was one of the most important inventions in human history. It allowed us to align a lot of people in pursuit of a common goal and accomplish things no individual could. Obviously, the US is not a company, but I think a similar model can work for the US as well as it does for companies. A proposal like this obviously requires a lot of new funding to do at large scale, but I think we could start very small — a few hundred dollars per citizen per year — and ramp it up to a long-term target of 10–20% of GDP per year when the GDP per capita doubles. [1] I have no delusions about the challenges of such a program. There would be difficult consequences for things like immigration policy that will need a lot of discussion. We’d also need to figure out rules about transferability and borrowing against this equity. And we’d need to set it up in a way that does not exacerbate short-term thinking or favor unsustainable growth. However, as the economy grows, we could imagine a world in which every American would have their basic needs guaranteed. Absolute poverty would be eliminated, and we would no longer motivate people through the fear of not being able to eat. In addition to being the obviously right thing to do, eliminating poverty will increase productivity. American Equity would create a society that I believe would work much better than what we have today. It would free Americans to work on what they really care about, improve social cohesion, and incentivize everyone to think about ways to grow the whole pie. And we should consider eventually replacing some of our current aid programs, which distort incentives and are needlessly complicated and inefficient, with something like this. Of course this won’t solve all our problems — we still need serious reform in areas such as housing, education, and healthcare. Without policies that address the cost of living crisis, any sort of redistribution will be far less effective than it otherwise could be.

Epic Games Store Listing: A Strategic Leap The decision to list Wilder World on the Epic Games Store, a platform boasting over 270 million total users and 75 million monthly active users, is a testament to the game's ambitious vision,  Frank Wilder, Co-founder of Wilder World, articulates this strategic move as "setting the pace for next-gen gaming in the metaverse." Epic Games and Wilder World have joined forces because they share the same goals and values: to change the status quo, especially the unfair middlemen that have been holding back the video game industry for a long time. The fact that Wilder World works with Nvidia's GeForce Now and SuperVerse shows how far it can spread. The Problem Sleeping Beauty is put asleep on Sunday and awakened on the following day, Monday or the following two days, Monday and Tuesday. The story goes that Sleeping Beauty never remembers being put asleep. The official paradox ascribes that effect to an amnesia-inducing drug but it could well be that Sleeping Beauty is sleeping figuratively as well. Whether she is awakened once or twice depends on a fair coin toss performed on Sunday. If the coin comes up head, Sleeping Beauty is awakened on Monday only. If the coin comes up tails, Sleeping Beauty is awakened on Monday and Tuesday. At the end of the experiment, either Monday or Tuesday, she is asked to assign probabilities to the scenario where the coin landed head and the scenario where the coin landed tails. The Controversy One way Sleeping Beauty could answer the question is as follows: [ ] I don’t remember whether I woke up once or twice. It’s a fair coin. So, it’s equally likely that the coin landed tails as it landed heads, so the probability of each scenario is 1/2. Half Another way Sleeping Beauty could answer the question is as follows: [ ] I woke up. Given how the experiment is set up, I’d wake up twice twice as many times than I’d would wake up once if the experiment ran many times. So, the probability that the coin landed tails is 2/3 while the probability that the coin landed heads is 1/3. Third How should Sleeping Beauty answer? The Formalisation Let’s formalise the problem. The coin is fair. Hence, the worldly probabilities of heads and tails are equal: P_World(H) = P_World(T) = 1/2 :  Heads —> Sleeping Beauty awakened on Monday. Heads scenario Tails —> Sleeping Beauty awakened on Monday, put back to sleep and awakened on Tuesday. Tails scenario: The question asked: what probability should sleeping beauty assign to the scenario that the coin landed heads and tails respectively: P_SleepingBeauty(H) = ??? Unpacking [Half] The first answer available to Sleeping Beauty appeals to the coin’s intrinsic probabilities. She knows that a fair coin has been tossed and that her waking up day depends on the outcome of that coin toss. So, Sleeping Beauty relies on her knowledge of the worldly probabilities to hold that the probability that the coin toss came up heads is 1/2. Unpacking [Third] The second answer available to Sleeping Beauty appeals to the chain of events. This line of reasoning exploits the asymmetry between the two scenarios. P(Heads scenario) = P(Mon) = 1/3
P(Tails scenario) = P(Tue) = 2/3 Waking up happens twice as much in tail worlds as in heads worlds. Sleeping beauty, being agnostic about the type of world she’s in, could reason as follows. Since I woke up, there is a 2/3 probability that I am in a tail world, a 1/3 probability that I am in a heads world. Hence, there is a tacit assumption of probabilistic dependency between the coin toss and waking up. Third Sleeping Beauties’ epistemic perspective The experimenter knows about the probabilistic dependency between the coin toss and waking as it introduced by him/her/them. Sleeping beauty, however, from her perspective, does and should not know about these links. It’s part of the set-up of the thought experiment that she does not remember the amount of times she gone back to sleep. The correct probabilistic assessment of the coin toss for her is [ ]. Half The scientist is playing a demon, having a higher perspective than sleeping beauty, he/she/they sneaks in inaccessible knowledge into sleeping beauty’s probabilistic estimation space. The probability considered in [ ] is something akin to Third P_SleepingBeauty(H | Experimental Setup) = P_SleepingBeautyAsSeeinByExperimenter(H) The Lesson When judging other people’s operating model of the world, we shall be careful not to intermingle our knowledge, perspective and foresight into our evaluation of their perspective. A (near) perfectly rational agent might look extremely stupid / ingenious when looked at from a significantly different knowledge background.
