14 Proven Tips to Create and Maintain a Perfect Career Page for Your Organization

Hi Micha, welcome to our series “Behind the Startup.” Please tell us about yourself and the story behind ? Ishan Pandey: Nodle Thank you for inviting me to interview. We have been early supporters of Hackernoon from the very beginning. I have been an entrepreneur for almost 20 years in the space of telecommunications and wireless. Since I was a kid coding and later an internet fan, my dream has always been to connect the planet for free. In 2004, I was lucky to be part of the first telco in Europe that opened up communications for Skype, enabling them to sell communications to mobile and landlines. 10 years later, in 2014, after moving to San Francisco to build my next startup, I launched FireChat. Micha Benoliel: FireChat was the first off-the-grid messaging app leveraging mobile mesh technologies. 10 days after launching we already had a million users and what we thought would be a demo app for Burning Man ended up becoming the messaging app that powered many pro-democracy protests around the globe. The peak moment was in Hong Kong in September 2014 when half a million people downloaded the app to stay connected and organize the “Umbrella Revolution.” After that experiment leveraging mobile mesh networking technologies, it was clear to me that what we call the ‘smartphone infrastructure’ could be leveraged to build resilient networks for more than just moving messages. Since most smartphones use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and more than 50% of all IoT devices have a BLE interface, building an incentivized, decentralized wireless IoT network—for the people, and by the people—made a lot of sense.  Our network was thus born to build the networking and blockchain stack that we believe will lead to free connectivity. Please tell us about Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol and how it works with blockchain applications? Ishan Pandey: We have designed a blockchain network that leverages smartphones and other base stations supporting Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) like Cisco Meraki routers. BLE is a very advanced protocol that also has its own language for enabling communication and interactions between devices called GATT (an acronym for Generic Attribute Profile). Any BLE device or sensor that is supporting GATT or broadcasting data can use the Network. Micha Benoliel: For example, let's say you’re looking for a solution to collect information from your shipment packages equipped with a BLE tag and sensors. Your tag is broadcasting an identity with some measurement info that data can automatically be picked up by an ‘edge node’ (smartphone) in our Network and routed to your server. All that is needed from you is simple provisioning through the dashboard, and a few seconds later the stream of data appears. In most cases, there is no need for you to modify the firmware of the IoT device. This all happens seamlessly and in a matter of minutes. The internet's entry into different domains that have an impact on people's lives is astounding. Despite security and privacy issues, the Internet of Things is here to stay and will continue to shape our perceptions of the world. From a regulatory standpoint, what measures should be introduced so as to induce a better system wherein security and privacy issues are properly practised? Ishan Pandey: I am personally against unnecessary roadblocks that tend to limit innovation, instead of incentivizing it. What we need is education, and the first category of entities to educate are the manufacturers and operators of IoT devices. They need to take privacy and security as a top priority in anything they do. On our side, we have created technology and IP to enable security and privacy for any IoT device that wants to use the network. We have done a lot of work around secure beacon identity and our public key infrastructure. Blockchain is the only way that we believe we can secure the future of the Internet. In addition, since we are using our own rewards formula for connecting devices, we are looking at rewarding edge nodes more when the data is moved from a device using stronger security and privacy. We think this may also give the industry an incentive to better protect user privacy and increase the security of any data traffic. Using regulation to enforce security and privacy can be a double-edged sword as to create an efficient data chain since some information still needs to remain publicly available and accessible; e.g. air quality data, weather data, and alert information to name a few. Micha Benoliel: The Internet of Things (IoT) and the Internet of Everything (IoE) are evolving communication ideas that will effortlessly link a range of devices (such as smartphones, household appliances, sensors, and other network devices), people, data, and processes. Which domains will be best assisted with this new emerging technology? Ishan Pandey: IoT and IoE are great concepts. To realize their full potential, they need a few other trends to accelerate, such as: the miniaturization of radio chips, less regulation for using wireless radio frequencies (e.g. CBRS initiatives), more innovations in optimizing battery consumptions or enabling energy harvesting and in the field of spectrum efficiencies. Micha Benoliel: In a progressively hyperconnected world, in what ways can we increase corporate efficiencies and address important global societal issues? Ishan Pandey: The ultimate goal for the IoT of IoE according to our network’s vision is to realize the dream of becoming the connectivity layer for the of tomorrow. This is in stark comparison to the common ”  A commodity chain process is to gather resources, transform them into goods or commodities, and finally, distribute them to consumers. A data chain process is to collect data, sometimes gather data from multiple sources, and then route it securely and directly to its owner or to organizations and individuals that will make use of it. Micha Benoliel: “data chain” “commodity chain. For example, let’s take a level of air pollution in California due to recent wildfires. Imagine 1,000 Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) air quality sensors across a city like Los Angeles almost simultaneously broadcasting this critical data. The data then gets picked up by an app, when the user is walking by; and the data is validated, signed and tagged with a location and time. Then, the data is routed to a local city server where the data gets displayed on the city’s air quality dashboard. City officials are alerted to the dangerous level detected and decide to take immediate action to send alerts to all cellphones in the city and suburbs to let people know to not venture to the city center where the air pollution is the highest. ‘code red’ Only when a data chain such as this is achieved can we expect supply and demand to match more efficiently and almost in real-time. Society would highly benefit by automating this process in order to better control carbon emissions as well or simply reduce waste. It is with these network effects between data systems that we believe incredible value can be created. Despite fears about crypto prohibitions in the US infrastructure plan, Bitcoin and Ether hit their highest levels in nearly two months after a major Ethereum upgrade. Do you think this rally will last, or do you think the crypto market will soon hit a stump? Ishan Pandey: With 68 million crypto wallets and almost 5 billion smartphone users, I think we are just at the beginning; the crypto market is only starting to grow. Imagine the impact of crypto and blockchain technologies when 1 billion people use them. Micha Benoliel: Various governments are scrutinizing the crypto industry, such as the $1 trillion infrastructure bill’s “crypto tax reporting,” the deletion of security tokens from Uniswap’s front end, and the Chinese crypto prohibition. What does the future look like for cryptocurrencies across the globe? Ishan Pandey: Regulators and government are just starting to understand crypto and the impact it can have on our society and citizens around the world. Up until recently, capitalism has proven to be the most efficient system for our economies. But now, decentralized networks and crypto are enabling a new system that makes capital circulation more fluid and wealth creation easier. When governments start to understand that it is the only way to provide a more equitable distribution of wealth and that it will also optimize the spendings of their administrations, I think they will push towards a faster and easier adoption of these technologies. With the global Covid-19 crisis, the way we work is changing fast, and we need to adapt faster if we want our economies to continue to perform. Crypto is part of the solution for keeping our economies thriving. Polkadot’s recently announced parachain functionalities are still in their initial stages in terms of interoperability. What does the roadmap ahead look like for the Polkadot space in terms of the interoperability factor and privacy and security issues? Ishan Pandey: Our network has partnered with the Web3 Foundation to improve security and privacy and we were awarded a grant to build our public key infrastructure on Parity Substrate. We are planning to run our own parachain auction soon to secure a Polkadot Parachain slot in order to reinforce the security of the network, enable better interoperability with other blockchains and Polkadot projects, and have other ecosystems benefit from our network’s ecosystem and services. Back in April, we became composable with Acala Network, the all-in-one DeFi hub, whose Karura Network recently won the first Parachain slot on Kusama. This means we’ve integrated Acala’s XTokens pallet in our Parachain branch to support sending and receiving Nodle Cash tokens between chains such as Polkadot, Acala, Karura, Laminar, and more. Micha Benoliel: Ishan Pandey: What new trends are we going to witness within the blockchain ecosystem especially in the post-covid-19 era? We believe that Decentralized Wireless (DeWi) is becoming a necessity to guarantee people’s access to information in the post-Covid-19 era. We have built an ecosystem that can accelerate the creation of wireless infrastructure with the goal of having people being able to access more data for free and businesses leverage the infrastructure for their own applications and services. We are entering an era of radical, and exponential change, and we want to be sure this future we are creating is prosperous, private, and one that we want to live in. Regulators are Just Starting to Understand Crypto and the Impact it can Have on our Society

Here’s some inspiration from highly funded start-ups on how they validated their initial idea. Start small. Start now. Just start.. In no particular order, here we go: Doordash Y Combinator-backed, DoorDash is one of several technology companies that uses logistics services to offer food delivery from restaurants on-demand. Here’s a small from the founder, on how to get started and doing things initially that don’t scale at all. excerpt Stanley Tang Zero to one, real quick. Here’s how: Landing page in an afternoon and they were doing restaurant pick-ups and deliveries by the night (all by themselves and while in college!). Yes, within the day. : Consider this as an experiment, just get it out there and validate! Your aim, in the beginning, is to get feedback and make sure it’s not a personal bias that you’re solving for! The best part of doing this is you will also get a chance to talk to your users and get real-time feedback! This might not work for everyone but for the other 90% of the ideas that you’re sitting on waiting to build a “finished & shiny” product before you launch, well.. Key takeaways If you’re solving a real problem, you don’t need any algorithms or perfect web pages. A clean landing page, hacking together stuff to make things work is ALL you need. Here’s my favorite slide from the video: May sound really basic, but definitely important. 2. — Teespring Again YC backed, Teespring is a platform for custom merchandise, where you can design your own clothes and set shop, the team takes care of everything else and keeps a percentage of the sales. , Founder of Teespring, interesting techniques that worked for them on acquiring their initial users while doing things that were not scalable at all. Walker Williams covers Doing things that don’t scale are essentially things that won’t last you long, won’t end up with you till your millionth user — it’ll break for sure, but you’ll get your desired outcome, spending much lesser time and money. : There’s no silver bullet for user acquisition. You aren’t going to get to hundreds and thousands of users overnight. 1 in a million products go viral and their story is different. But it doesn’t mean that the rest don’t survive, some of them do. And one thing common among those is the fact that they build one user at a time. It’s going to be tough initially, there aren’t going to be any success stories to sell, but as a founder, it’s your responsibility to bring those users yourself even if that takes YOU getting on the phone with the customer. Key takeaways When you get started, the incline is the steepest and hopefully, eventually, you get to a point. It might take time and you won’t see the ROI on your time, but focus on growth. Give your initial users the best experience possible, delight them with an experience that they will remember so that they become champions and advocate for your product. Walker still services up-to 20 CS tickets a day, and reads through all of his twitter feed and his communities — it’s important to know what your customers are talking about, the good the bad and even the ugly so you can fix it. Reach out proactively to current and churned users, this will help you find the pain points and solve them for the current ones. “Problems are inevitable, do whatever it takes to make it right” All it takes is one detractor is shoot down tons of momentum. Just bite the bullet and do everything you can to make it right. Lastly, remember this! Rule of Thumb: Worry only about the next order of magnitude. When you’re at 10, think about 100; when you get there worry about the next 900. Do not jump or optimize directly for two-three levels above that. They say necessity is the mother of invention — you will figure it out, I promise you. 3. ProductHunt Following on Twitter, I’ve learnt the importance of moving from idea to a live, working MVP real quick and the value of shipping fast and getting customer feedback. Ryan Hoover The next one is another example from one of my (our!) favorite startups — ProductHunt — a website that allows users to share their favorite products and discover new ones across the globe. Exploring around, I found this on Hoover’s dated early 2014, sharing his update on raising $6.1M Series A funding and the journey that it’s been. blog-post He shares his humble beginnings — Quoting Ryan “Product Hunt began as an email list. I threw it together one early morning, invited some friends to contribute, and shared it online.” Bit by bit, from friends and network, they started building and shipping the MVP rather than putting hours together and pondering on the idea. The email list started getting great user feedback and building the “real” PH only happened months later with ! Nathan Bashaw In another that Ryan posted about doing things that don’t scale and how they got to 2000 users in the process. In this case, he shares how important a successful beta can be and how manual, slow growth is a far richer driver to long-lasting company than the hockey-stick curve. He also shares how important email can be as a tool (and while there is tons of automation today, a well-written email in the right context can help to a large extent in the early days! Growth Hackers, take note!) article : The final product is going to look, feel 100% better than the first one you launch. (in most cases will solve for different things as well). Hence, start early, ship fast, gather feedback and do that right over. Reviewing their listings, co-founder Joe Gebbia recalls that “the photos were really bad. People were using camera phones and taking Craigslist-quality pictures. Surprise! No one was booking because you couldn’t see what you were paying for.” Enter Paul Grahan of YC, one of their earliest investors, who recommended that the two experiments with a hack to improve bookings that were low tech and high effort — but it was fast to execute on and wound up incredibly effective. Chesky and Gebbia rented a $500 camera and went door to door, taking professional pictures of as many listings in the city as possible. Then they compared the number of bookings for the listings with the improved photos versus the rest of the New York listings and found that the new photos led to between two and three times more bookings, instantly doubling the revenue they were seeing from New York. With their hypothesis proven, they extended this to Paris, London, Vancouver, Miami — all of them showing similar results. So, Airbnb decided to create a photography program that allowed hosts to schedule a professional photographer to come and photograph their listing. Launching in the summer of 2010 with 20 photographers, it grew to more than 2000 freelance photographers, taking photos of 13,000 listings on 6 continents by 2012.” : All the other methods would’ve probably helped in scaling, but and stuck to things that things that didn’t scale at all, but helped them in understanding the real problems that users were going through. It’s easy to lose your North Star Metric in pursuit of the vanity or irrelevant growth ones, but it’s important that you stick to the basics and focus on where you want to be. For those of us in the edge computing industry, it simply underscored what we already knew — securing distributed devices is As intelligent systems increasingly expand into the field, we’ll see more and more attacks of this sort if we continue to leverage the same security stance and tools that we’ve used for decades within perimetered locations like data centers and secure telecommunication facilities. In this article, I will go through a few of the widely-cited edge breaches in the industry and highlight how a zero trust security model optimized for the unique challenges of the edge would have helped prevent them from happening. Lessons Learned In a hack reminiscent of Verkada, the 2016 infected millions of cameras and turned them into bots that together launched a massive DDOS attack on upstream networks, briefly taking down the internet in the northeastern United States. Challenges of Securing Distributed Edge Computing With these examples in mind, what is unique about the proverbial edge that makes security such a challenge? : Part of the value of IoT and edge computing comes from having devices connected across the organization, providing a holistic view of operations. Over time we will see edge device deployments grow into the trillions, and traditional data center solutions for security and management are not designed for this kind of scale. Scale Distributed edge computing resources rarely have the defense of four physical walls or a traditional network perimeter. This requires a security approach that assumes that these resources can be physically tampered with and doesn’t depend upon an owned network for defense. Lack of Physical and Network Perimeters: The edge is at the convergence of the physical and digital worlds. In addition to a highly heterogeneous landscape of technologies, we also have to account for diverse skill sets spanning IT and OT (e.g. network and security admins, DevOps, production, quality and maintenance engineers, data scientists). Heterogeneity: As OT and IT converge at the edge, each organization’s often conflicting priorities must be considered. While OT typically cares about uptime and safety, IT prioritizes data security, privacy and governance. Security solutions must balance these priorities in order to be successful. Varying Priorities: Many IoT devices are too resource-constrained to host security measures such as encryption, plus the broad install base of legacy systems in the field was never intended to be connected to broader networks, let alone the internet. Because of these limitations, these devices and systems need to rely on more capable compute nodes immediately upstream to serve as the first line of defense, providing functions such as root of trust and encryption. Constrained Devices and Legacy Systems: EVE-OS: Zero Trust Foundation Built for Distributed Edge Computing The Verkada hack and its predecessors make it clear that edge computing requires a zero trust architecture that addresses the unique security requirements of the edge. Zero trust begins with a basic tenant — trust no one and verify everything. started in 2019 with the Linux Foundation’s organization with the goal of delivering an open-source, vendor-agnostic and standardized foundation for hosting distributed edge computing workloads. Project EVE is driven by EVE-OS, a lightweight, secure, open, universal and Linux-based distributed edge operating system with open, vendor-neutral APIs for remote lifecycle management. The solution can run on any hardware (e.g., x86, Arm, GPU) and leverages different hypervisors and container runtimes to ensure policy-based isolation between applications, host hardware, and networks. The Project EVE community is now over 60 unique developers. Project EVE LF Edge EVE-OS Zero Trust Components Let’s take a look at the individual components of the EVE-OS zero trust security framework. EVE-OS leverages the cryptographic identity created in the factory or supply chain in the form of a private key generated in a hardware security model (e.g., TPM chip). This identity never leaves that chip and the root of trust is also used to store additional keys (e.g., for an application stack such as Azure IoT Edge). In turn, the public key is stored in the remote console. Hardware Root of Trust: An edge compute node running EVE-OS leverages its silicon-based trust anchor (e.g., TPM) for identity and communicates directly with the remote controller to verify itself. This eliminates having a username and password for each edge device in the field, instead, all access is governed through role-based access control (RBAC) in a centralized console. Hackers with physical access to an edge computing node have no way of logging into the device locally. No Usernames and Passwords: EVE-OS has granular, software-defined networking controls built in, enabling admins to govern traffic between applications, compute resources, and other network resources based on policy. The distributed firewall can be used to govern communication between applications on an edge node and on-prem and cloud systems, and detect any abnormal patterns in network traffic. As a bare metal solution, EVE-OS also provides admins with the ability to remotely block unused I/O ports on edge devices such as USB, Ethernet and serial. Combined with there being no local login credentials, this physical port blocking provides an effective measure against insider attacks leveraging USB sticks. Distributed Firewall: All of these tools are implemented in a curated, layered fashion to establish defense in depth with considerations for people, process, and technology. Layered Security Model: All features within EVE-OS are exposed through an open, vendor-neutral API that is accessed remotely through the user’s console of choice. Edge nodes block unsolicited inbound instruction, instead reaching out to their centralized management console at scheduled intervals and establishing a secure connection before implementing any updates. Centralized Management: Ounce of Prevention > Pound of Cure Returning to the above examples of security breaches, what would the impact of these attacks have looked like if the systems were running on top of EVE-OS? In short, there would have been multiple opportunities for the breaches to be prevented, or at least discovered and mitigated immediately. In the Verkada and Mirai examples, the entry point would have had to be the camera operating system itself, running in isolation on top of top EVE-OS. However, this would not have been possible because EVE-OS itself has no direct login capabilities. The same benefit would have applied in the Target example, and in the case of Stuxnet, admins could have locked down USB ports on local industrial PCs to prevent a physical insider attack. No Physical Breach: In all of these example attacks, the distributed firewall within EVE-OS would have limited the communications of applications, intercepting any attempts of compromised devices to communicate with any systems not explicitly allowed. Further, edge computing nodes running EVE-OS deployed immediately upstream of the target devices would have provided additional segmentation and protection. Network Communications Intercepted: EVE-OS would have provided detailed logs of all of the hackers’ activities. It’s unlikely that the hackers would have realized that the operating system they breached was actually virtualized on top of EVE-OS. Activities Monitored: Security policies established within the controller and enforced locally by EVE-OS would have detected unusual behavior by each of these devices at the source and immediately cordoned them off from the rest of the network, preventing hackers from inflicting further damage. Automatic Quarantine: Centralized management from any dashboard means that updates to applications and their operating systems (e.g. a camera OS) could have been deployed to an entire fleet of edge hardware powered by EVE-OS with a single click. Meanwhile, any hacked application operating system running above EVE-OS would be preserved for subsequent forensic analysis by the developer. One-click Mitigation: The zero-trust approach, comprehensive security policies, and immediate notifications would have drastically limited the scope and damage of each of these breaches, preserving the company’s brand in addition to mitigating direct effects of the attack. Reputation Preserved: We’re in this Together The diverse technologies and expertise required to deploy and maintain edge computing solutions can make security especially daunting. The shared technology investment of developing EVE-OS through vendor-neutral open source collaboration is important because it provides a high level of transparency and creates an open anchor point around which to build an ecosystem of hardware, software and services experts. The open, vendor neutral API within EVE-OS prevents lock-in and enables anyone to build their own controller. In this regard, you can think of EVE-OS as the “Android of the Edge”. Simplifying the Complicated Finally, in the process of addressing all potential threat vectors, it’s important to not make security procedures so cumbersome that users try to bypass key protections, or refuse to use the connected solution at all. Security usability is especially critical in IoT and edge computing due to the highly diverse skill sets in the field. In one example, while developers of the many smart cameras that have been hacked in the field made it easy for users to bypass the password change for instant gratification, EVE-OS provides similar zero touch usability without security compromise by automating the creation of a silicon-based digital ID during onboarding. The ideal solution is architected to streamline usability throughout the lifecycle of deploying and orchestrating distributed edge computing solutions so users have the confidence to connect and can focus on their business. My head felt like hundreds of tabs in a single browser trying to load multiple types of information..." · · · · · Reading, watching, hearing, and personally getting to know about COVID-19 stories makes me at least once a day stop whatever I’m doing and reflect on how fragile life is and how all of our well-polished plans can easily fall in the face of not only a pandemic, but any disaster. Can we rely on data and calculated prediction? Can we ever adjust to our previous norms based on the pre-pandemic era? How soon can we get back to a normal lifestyle? What is the definition of a new normal? The number of both the infected and death toll are surreal. No one was ready for this situation or outcome. Even those I have spoken with who were infected and got the required medical treatment still haven’t recovered from the shock of it, physically or mentally. I wanted to share the story below from 2018 after a life-changing transformation related to my personal well-being and mental health occurred. However, I felt reluctant and found millions of reasons deep inside me not to share this personal story. Now there is this urgency and need within me based on the current situation that is pushing me to take that step, to purge myself from it, and to share with my network more intimately. While suffering in this chaos, my dear friend whom I hadn't seen for ages, was in Shanghai and invited me over for a drink to see her new apartment. Reluctantly, I agreed. It was not because I didn't want to see her, but because I was in a state of complete mental mess. Looking back, that very day in May of 2018 was life-changing for me and exactly what I was yearning. Lina On the day of our meeting, I was astonished by her calmness, the positive energy radiating from her aura, her sincere smile, and her organized manner. When it came to mental health, yoga, or other various forms, Vipassana was never on my radar to explore and learn. The more I read, the more skeptical I became. Questions poured out of my head. What does this meditation session mean for my life, my desires, my dreams, my identity, my future, and my beliefs? I used to believe in action. I still do in which there is an action, there is an evidence-based change, and there is either a good or a bad result based on which one could make adjustments This radical hypothetical change in my thinking and visualizing to look inward first prior to make a change caused enormous conflict for me. How can one settle a problem just by well-balanced inhale and exhale via hours of meditation? I figured to find the answers to all of my questions there was one solution -- just give it shot. I knew that I had to be open-minded and leave room for new things if I wanted to change and break free from my state of mental chaos There are many retreat options for trying Vipassana, yet I chose Indonesia, even better Jakarta and Bali. I have always wanted to take time and solely enjoy my own company. Thus, I made a decision that after I completed my retreat I would celebrate with a well-deserved vacation free from work, business, and myself. After my initial research, I signed up for this Vipassana course: Leaving for Indonesia I kept my plans in strict secrecy; neither my family nor my friends knew where and why I was leaving. I simply informed everyone that I was leaving for a business trip and would be traveling across the Asia Pacific for two weeks or so. When I arrived at the Jakarta-based center, it was packed with people from different walks of life, of different ages, and in different states of mind. Some were mingling and others who were first-timers like myself were wondering if this was some kind of cult. I remember striking up a conversation with from Australia, who remains a good friend of mine today. We asked one another why we were there and what we do in life, and then wished one another good luck in the journey. Tristan Turner We were told that there should be no eye contact, speaking, phones, the technology of any kind, reading, writing, listening to music, exercise, nor physical contact with others. Leaving the premises was prohibited also, except to walk around the compound, which was surrounded by mountains. I felt like I was Edmond Dantes in the Château d'If. There were approximately 200 people. We were given the key to our rooms, and to my surprise, I had my own room. Even better, it was room N-7, which is my favorite number. Some of the other participants shared rooms. In some there were two people, others had four people. Everyone had to follow the given mandatory guidelines if they wanted to make most of the retreat. To me, it felt like I had to swallow the sun to accept this. How could one live with roommates and not get to know one another? How was it possible not to talk, share, and enjoy one another`s company if no one is allowed to?! The Beginning of 10 Days of Solitude At 8:30 a.m., in the beginning of summer, all participants show up for the first day of the communal meditation for the first time. Men are on one side and women are on the other. We were told that we have to keep our eyes closed and legs crossed, and concentrate entirely for the first three days on our inhale and exhale strictly. The more I tried to focus, the harder it became. My head was full of noise. Keeping my eyes closed was a challenge for no logical reason, but I did my best to follow the guidelines. In the mornings and evenings, everyone had communal meditation. In between, we were offered vegetarian food and free time to meditate in our rooms and walk on our own in the woods before dinner at 7:00 p.m. The routine reminded me that I was facing my mental prison. Yet, the more I meditated in my room and with the community, the more personal it became, not to mention the pain I felt in my back and the complete numbness from keeping my legs crossed. Out of blue, tears would start streaming down my face uncontrollably. On day six, I started to feel real value and accomplishment in my personal battle focusing on my breath. My entire life story was playing in my head over and over again, including quarrels with my parents, disagreements with my brothers, personal and professional frustrations and failures, and silly and foolish mistakes that ruined my reputation. The list is long. As I moved on with meditating, I felt like I was breaking free of those chains that were holding me back and resulting in self-sabotage. I focused my energy inwards, dealing with well-buried problems and memories in silence while sitting either in my room or in the meditation hall packed with people. To me, they all seemed to have an identical story. Sometimes someone would start yelling in the middle of meditation. I understood, knowing it is hard to accept and feel it. Sometimes someone would just stand and leave the hall with no explanation. Sometimes I could see from the expression on their faces that some would find tranquility. Some would remain puzzled with their inner demons. Others would just go with the flow, which is what I preferred to do. Being alone with your own thoughts for 10 days in silence mode in a silent retreat doesn`t necessarily mean there is silence deep inside of you. For me, it felt like a tsunami washing over my memories, touching upon deeply buried emotions, and shuttering all the chains, eventually setting me free from myself. I admit it was too hard to keep up with meditation, follow all the guidelines, and manage myself with everything combined. Upon finishing, I learned that it was not about managing my anger or frustration, but about harmonizing or making peace with myself that mattered. It wasn't about knowing others, but about knowing myself. Just like Socrates said, “Know thyself.” Now it made a lot more sense to me. My biggest learning was that I didn't have to change the world, but change myself. Upon coming to this conclusion, I reminded myself of this quote by Rumi: When I was younger I wanted to change the world, when I got older I learned that I had to change myself The Last Stand (Day 10) On the last day of meditation, in the afternoon, we were allowed to get to know one another. I never felt so happy to have a simple human connection. All of the members were full of happiness. A positive aura surrounded everyone as we all started getting to know one another more intimately. The joy of being connected to and being listened to by others never felt so good prior to this experience. On the last day for hours we spoke with one another sharing our story, those that connected became friends, both online and offline, i still enjoy keeping in touch fellas like: James Streatfield, Raj Roy, Remy Rd, Meriki Garnett, Mark Anthony, Davide Bernardi, Clemow Bergmann, and of course, Tristan are among others... After the retreat, some of us went to Bali and would continue sharing our stories and dive deep into spiritual and philosophic discussions during our lunch and dinners. One thing was very clear -- none of us would ever be the same again Productivity Redefined Upon arrival to Moscow, I never felt so alive or so connected to myself. The feeling is hard to express, yet so obvious to feel within me. I am not saying that I got rid of all my inner demons, previously committed mistakes that I am sorry for, or failures that could have been avoided, but the meditation created space for all of them to coexist in harmony rather than in conflict. When talking to my friends, those that know me well, they would mention there was something about my being that slightly changed. I would agree. Anything that I put my hands no longer felt like a burden. I finally didn't have to spend hours struggling to concentrate. I was able to put my ass in the chair, essentially the driver’s seat, and take complete control. I could read a book in two or three days and take notes to reflect on. I could write articles in a five to nine-hour timeframe. I could focus more deeply and improve my Chinese (not as good as i want though). There were no more battles with myself to stop looking at my phone. I didn't have to do things because I had to; I did them because I wanted to and because . I could give my full attention to my priority task with a lot more ease. I wanted to stop doing 10 things at once Conclusion Today, whenever I engage in any activity I don’t feel as unfocused, hopeless, or restless like I used to in the days prior to my Vipassana awakening. I don't feel irritated or annoyed when I face uncomfortable situations of any kind. Flexibility and harmony go hand-in-hand. Whenever I have an issue to deal with or get to the moment when I feel like I am losing control over my life and need to be a lot more proactive and productive, I listen to myself, even more deeply than even before, to stay focused and keep my eyes on the big picture.
