Israeli-based blockchain attorney spent more than a decade in the State Attorney's Office in the Ministry of Justice as the Israeli government’s public prosecutor. Amit Levin In his more than ten years career, he headed the Economics Department of the Cyber Unit, consulted for the Israeli police and tax authorities, interrogated expert witnesses, and prosecuted crypto-related crimes. Amit recently landed a plum job at Binance as a special crypto crime investigator, and his job description allows him to be part of the Global Sanctions and Counter-Terrorism Financing(CTF) Investigations Team. The following is my recent interview with him. Read on! Amit, thanks for showing up for this interview. I would like to know more about you. It's a great pleasure. I am 40 years old. I'm married, and I am the father of four sons. In our house, there are either sports or fights. I started my career as a criminal attorney in the field of sex and drug offenses. Everyone knows it to be an interesting and tough field. After several years in the field, I felt the need to change and move to the white-collar world, where you usually face more sophisticated defense attorneys with a wealth of experience in criminal litigation. After about five years in this field, and following my passion for technology, I moved to manage the economic unit in the cyber department at the state attorney's office, which deals with money laundering cases and terrorist financing through virtual currencies. About a month ago I resigned from my position, and now, I am looking for new challenges. How did your journey to blockchain technology begin? This is an excellent question. My journey, like most crypto people, began with a random meeting with a friend who is involved in the field. I started asking questions, reading material, and listening to podcasts until I finally realized that this is the most fascinating field I have encountered during my career and in which I want to engage. The Bitcoin white paper is in my eyes a founding document that you cannot understand the crypto ecosystem without reading it several times. A few years ago, my private interest and my work merged together, and for the past few years, I have been eating, drinking, and breathing crypto in the Cyber ​​Department at the State Attorney's Office How is cryptocurrency regulated in Israel? In principle, the direction of the regulators is positive. In November 2022, the Bank of Israel forced all Israeli banks to establish a policy of accepting funds from crypto. This instruction comes after a substantial ruling by the Supreme Court of Israel that canceled the policy of the banks which excluded the category of receiving funds converted from virtual currencies. The Israeli Tax Authority also published a number of regulations in the field of crypto including definitions for currency taxation, and even referred to NFT taxation. The Israeli Financial Intelligence Unit(FIU) is heavily involved in the field and receives suspicious reports, in accordance with the regulation, from providers of financial services in virtual currencies. How are crypto crimes investigated in Israel? In Israel, working in a task force is very important. Not all the information and abilities are found in one agency; therefore, teamwork is important. Oftentimes, the Tax Authority investigators share information that the Israel Police do not have for the purpose of building the investigation case and vice versa. Just recently, I handled a joint case with a number of investigative agencies which was resolved regarding the statements made by the suspect to customs upon his entry into the territory of the State of Israel. These statements, which were only in the hands of customs, were passed on to the other investigative agencies and helped a lot in building the investigation case and forfeiture of millions of shekels in virtual benefits. Do you think cryptocurrency should be banned in Isreal? Of course not! As I mentioned earlier, cryptocurrency regulation in Israel is in the direction of adopting crypto and not rejecting or outlawing it. Although crypto poses a very significant challenge to regulators all over the world, it is crucial that it is regulated through existing enforcement tools, and through the development of new mechanisms. I believe that crypto is here to stay and a country that does not embrace it will eventually be left behind economically and technologically. What do you consider the most important justification for crypto regulation? In my opinion, the most important justification for crypto regulation is the need to track questionable funds or money to prevent money laundering. Anyone familiar with the field knows the FATF's efforts in the last thirty years to produce a uniform policy. This model should also be applied to the crypto world as we recently witnessed in the MICA legislation. What is the toughest challenge you have dealt with as the head of the economic unit at the Cyber department? As you can imagine, financial crime in cyberspace is an extremely challenging phenomenon, which is why investigating crypto-related crimes is [important]. There is no case that does not cross borders and contains requests for legal help to different countries in the world. Some of the countries that do not have diplomatic relations with the State of Israel are naturally bound to hinder the progress of the investigation and make evidence difficult to gather. The most complex challenges I faced were prosecuting crypto-related cases in courts with no background in money laundering or virtual currencies, and investigating money laundering cases on virtual currencies using various mixers aimed at eliminating the money trail. How can the crypto industry be regulated without sucking out innovation? Like most answers in this world, the answer to this is cooperation. Cooperation between the private sector and the public sector in which each party explains its position and concerns, but on the other hand, persuades the other party to produce a system which, on the one hand, is under regulation, but on the other hand, does not prevent innovation. In Israel, there are various committees in which representatives from various agencies all aim to bridge these gaps. Any parting words? I strongly believe that the future of cryptocurrency is guaranteed in Israel, and I am confident that within a decade or two, much of the global economy will use blockchain technology.

A spate of data breaches in the past year has refocused user attention on online security, particularly on cloud platforms. When the massive data breach at Dropbox happened in 2012, few people understood its severity. It was only announced four years later that hackers tapped into more than 68 million personal accounts – accessing data like email addresses and passwords – representing nearly 5 gigabytes of data. In January 2019, Apple announced that a bug in its platform had resulted in exposed iCloud user . data Following on the heels of the iCloud breach, hackers compromised Lumin PDF’s contact database in late 2019, resulting in the exposure of Lumin users’ non-sensitive details, such as gender and name. You could essentially expose the whole database to a less trusted DMZ," says Kirkpatrick. Furthermore, the IT giant failed to provide an authentication mechanism when used in certain modes. In the resulting breaches, the records of over 800 million users were stolen and held for ransom in Bitcoin. As companies rushed to meet the hackers’ demands, it quickly became clear that the hackers did not intend to return all data. Many companies that handed over the ransoms were rewarded with empty databases despite meeting the demands of the cybercriminals. Other companies, wary of falling into the same trap, refused to negotiate with the hackers. After attacks on Mongo databases, hackers successfully diversified efforts to many other servers, including Hadoop, Cassandra, ElasticSearch, MySQL, and CouchDB. MongoDB, Inc., the company behind Mongo databases has since fixed this security issue by releasing a new MongoDB 2.6.0 database version accessible only by local connections. Lumin PDF breach: Summary When Lumin PDF announced the data breach, many users of the Lumin PDF extension and Lumin PDF app panicked, thinking that their Google Drive was hacked. These fears, thankfully, were ungrounded. Ferguson later confirmed the hackers had been successful in accessing only users’ names, email addresses, gender, and language settings. Credit card details and passwords remained secure. The leaked data was from a software application that is used by the Lumin PDF team to test new features. As a result, the leaked data was at least 8 months old. Google access tokens allowing users to access their Google Drive accounts included in the leak expire about one hour after their creation, so their was no risk that any files were compromised. Because of this, the attackers gained access to a very limited range of data. Lumin’s security system blocking access to all user documents, signatures, and sensitive data remained uncompromised. Lumin PDF reviewed the incident right away, implementing strong internal security policies to prevent any similar incident being repeated. Since the breach, the Lumin PDF security team took a serious look at how they could put more teeth in their security stance. “We are always reviewing how we can strengthen protection around our databases. We employ encryption and role-based access control, as well as a rigorous set of security policies,” says Lumin PDF’s CEO, Max Ferguson. “We’ve implemented multi-layered security, a strategy that protects data by multiple strong layers of security. Out of all the companies that were targeted in the MongoDB breaches, a significant number of them are also implementing these measures.” Lumin moved immediately to fortify its defenses with: cybersecurity Role-based access control intensified. Lumin has heightened authentication requirements at the same time as narrowing access controls. This reduces the risk of a breach internally. Transport Layer Security implemented. Cybercriminals use a man-in-the-middle attack (MITM) to covertly intercept communications between two parties. Sometimes, they then alter this information without the receiving party catching on. Following the Lumin PDF security breach, the company added Transport Layer Security (TLS) onto its existing encryption. TLS is widely considered superior to other types of encryption due to its simultaneous utilization of two kinds of encryption: private key and symmetric. Secured doubly, it is able to securely send sensitive data. At the same time, TLS reduces response times by detecting possible message tampering and notifying the system automatically. Multi-layer encryption launched. Lumin PDF users now have every bit of their data doubly protected with secure session tokens. This helps users avoid unintentionally sharing a document. Risk is an inherent part of technology use, whether data is being stored locally or in the cloud. Ultimately, the most important factor in data security is the willingness of an organization to consistently reevaluate its security stance. Percentage of vaccine-negative webpages in different SERPs Conclusion Our analysis shows that while it may well be technically possible to design a search engine that manages to balance privacy-preservation with the promotion of high IQ material, this is currently not the case. The current relationship between privacy-preserving design features of search engines and the IQ of the results they return is inverse (although not proportionally). In instances where this can have a negative impact on public health, as in the example we have provided of the promotion of anti-vaccine misinformation, not intervening to alter the design of the algorithm even if this means sacrificing some degree of user privacy - can lead to severe harm for a large population of user and is, therefore, unethical. Designing a search engine that is privacy savvy and avoids issues with filter bubbles that can result from user-tracking may be a good thing, like designing a car with an engine that does not pollute and is inexpensive to run, and designers should seek to balance the different aspects of search engine design highlighted in Figure 3. However, if the brakes in an environmentally-designed car do not work, the car is unsafe and this negates the positive ethical decisions made by the designers. In a car this is a highly unlikely design outcome, as a car has to undergo several rounds of testing by regulatory agencies before being allowed on the market. This is not yet the case for search engines, which are only regulated from the perspective of data protection – which is primarily interpreted as data security rather than data privacy. Our study suggests that this is necessary but insufficient, and instead mechanisms should be developed to test search engines from the perspective of IQ, (particularly for YMYL webpages) before they can be deemed trustworthy providers of public health information. Other Models C. Pre-processing steps 6 Conclusion Understanding how recommender systems shape our behaviour is essential to avoid manipulation. In this paper, we investigated the Amazon recommender system concerning whether it has made it harder to change preferences. By analysing the Barrier-to-Exit (Rakova & Chowdhury, 2019) of more than 50,000 users, we found a highly significant growth in Barrier-to-Exit over time, which indicates that it has indeed become harder to change preferences for the analysed users. However, sampling bias induced by the calculation of Barrier-to-Exit makes it difficult to draw conclusions about the general population of Amazon customers. This highlights the dilemma of portability in measuring socio-technical systems (Selbst et al., 2019): accurately evaluating a concept like ”changing preferences” requires adapting to the context of the system, which makes it more difficult to generalise (and compare) to other systems. Comparing recommender systems is necessary for ensuring that these respect human autonomy (Varshney, 2020) and live up to new regulations such as the EU AI Act (Kop, 2021). Further work, should aim to create auditing procedures and metrics that allow third parties to measure potential preference manipulation in a way that fits within the context of the industry and allows for comparisons between different systems.
