Today, The Markup published into Los Angeles’s use of a scoring system to guide who receives priority for housing assistance. Under this system, people in need of housing take a survey designed to measure their vulnerability, with those deemed more vulnerable receiving higher priority. an investigation The story was based on an analysis of data from more than 130,000 surveys that we obtained by filing a public records request with the agency responsible for coordinating homeless services in Los Angeles. This survey is known as the Vulnerability Index-Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool, or VI-SPDAT. used in dozens of other cities and counties (see page 12) If you’re interested in obtaining homeless scoring system data for your own city or county, there are generic on filing public records requests and even of such requests out there. how-to guides automated generators But we thought we might share some quick and more specific tips—some that became clearer as we reported this story—that might help you in the process. Here’s what we learned. 1. Find as much documentation as possible The data we were looking for wasn’t publicly available, but before submitting a public records request, we set out to look for documents and other materials that explained what the data is and how it should be used. We found on LAHSA’s website, which gave us details to ask for when we crafted our public records request, such as veteran status and what a person was associated with. blank surveys geographic region 2. After putting in a request, don’t fear the follow‑up Don’t be afraid to follow up and ask for additional information or records, particularly if you know the agency has things that might answer some of your questions. When we first started reporting on one of the tools we were writing about, the VI-SPDAT, we filed a simple data request that asked for a fraction of the data that we ultimately ended up using in our analysis. The more we reported out the story, the more detailed our questions—and requests—became. By the end of our investigation, we followed up to ask for more records at least a half-dozen times, either formally or informally. Be careful about requesting more data just for the sake of it, though—you’ll find better results when you’re and have clear hypotheses you’re trying to test. intentional 3. But keep in mind that requests can take a long time That said, it’s better to ask for too much data rather than too little. Public records requests can take a notoriously long time to be fulfilled, depending on where you’re requesting the information from. If you file a request, receive the data, and realize you need something else, you might have to restart the process and go back to the well for more data. We did! Our initial request was sent in August 2021, and our final request was filed in September 2022. 4. When in doubt, ask the people who use the data every day For our story, we spoke with people who interacted with the scoring system in a lot of different ways: case managers who administered the surveys, matchers who used the results to determine housing placements, and the people who were surveyed themselves. When we had questions about the data, these people were often our best sources for explanations. Because they were the people creating and using the data on a daily basis, they were experts in all of the nuances and shortcomings that we might not have otherwise known about. When reporting on algorithms, figuring out who uses the results and talking to them about their experience can help shape your understanding. 5. See how others have analyzed the data in your city (or elsewhere) If an algorithm is broadly used, there are often other people looking into it. In our case, VI-SPDAT is a tool that has been used by dozens of communities for many years. By the time we started reporting on its use in Los Angeles, academics had already studied the tool’s effects in other parts of the country. How to Investigate the Homeless Vulnerability Scoring in Your City: 6 Tips

We Investigated L.A.’s Homelessness Scoring System: Here's How We Did It

The Los Angeles Times For most of the past four years, Chantel Jones lived in a homeless shelter on Los Angeles’s skid row, hating the danger, noise, and confinement: “You feel like you’re in jail, but you’re not in jail,” she recalled. Like tens of thousands of other people dealing with homelessness in Los Angeles, Jones, who is Black, entered the housing system through an intake survey administered by a case manager. She was asked several intensely personal questions about her history, like whether she used drugs or talked to the police after witnessing a crime. Her responses, solicited to measure her “vulnerability,” were scored, added up, and used to help determine whether Jones would qualify for subsidized permanent housing. This scoring system is called the Vulnerability Index-Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool, or VI‑SPDAT. When Jones discovered that she had scored too low to get placed in housing, she said she kept asking the case manager for an explanation. “He didn’t know,” she said. An investigation by The Markup has found that Jones’s case fits a pattern. An of more than 130,000 VI‑SPDAT surveys taken in the Los Angeles area as far back as 2016 found that White people received scores considered “high acuity”—or most in need—more often than Black people, and that gap persisted year over year. analysis The disparity is particularly stark among those who took a variation of the survey designed for people under 25. In 2021, 67 percent of unhoused White young adults scored enough to be in the highest priority group, compared with 56 percent of Latino young adults and 46 percent of Black young adults. Among people 25 and older, smaller, but similarly persistent, disparities favored White adults. In 2021, 39 percent of White adults were placed in the highest vulnerability group compared with 33 percent of Black adults and 35 percent of Latino adults. Longtime observers of Los Angeles’s approach to homelessness say scoring disparities in the system are alarming and may mean Black unhoused people are getting less help than they should. The findings come at a time when the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), the independent joint city and county agency responsible for coordinating homelessness services in Los Angeles, plans to stop using the tool entirely, after a research team partnering with the agency found the tool had “the potential to advantage certain racial groups over others.” But with no replacement yet available, the agency continues to rely on it. Despite their lower vulnerability scores, Black people were, according to a 2018 LAHSA , slightly overrepresented among those in LAHSA’s permanent housing programs, compared to the proportion of Black people experiencing homelessness. (The opposite was true for Latino people, who were slightly underrepresented.) report People can go outside the matching system and find housing themselves: In data provided to The Markup by LAHSA, a person may be counted as “permanently housed” if they “self-resolve” by finding housing on their own, just as if they’d been matched and placed, according to LAHSA. The data didn’t distinguish between those housing outcomes, making it difficult to understand the exact relationship between a person’s score and whether that person ultimately is matched to housing. But those who work with the system insist the score is a major component. “All things being equal on eligibility, the top score is going to get the offer,” said Marc Tousignant, who studies homelessness issues in Los Angeles as senior program director for vulnerable populations at Enterprise Community Partners, a national nonprofit. Neither Jones nor others caught in the of homelessness in Los Angeles are supposed to be told that they’re being scored. epidemic Case managers administering the survey are instructed to not reveal the process so people aren’t alienated by being referred to as numbers. “DO NOT VOLUNTEER THE SCORE OR THE SCORING PROCESS,” a 35-page information packet states. Black people tend to receive lower vulnerability scores despite their overrepresentation in Los Angeles’s unhoused population. In 2022, Black people about 9 percent of Los Angeles County’s population but 30 percent of the more than 65,000 people experiencing homelessness. made up The from LAHSA found that “structural racism, discrimination, and “implicit bias” played significant roles in the gap. 2018 report LAHSA spokesperson Christopher Yee said in a written statement that the agency was aware of “troubling racial disparities” in its assessment system and has partnered with outside researchers from the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles, to address those disparities by developing a new assessment tool. “Overall, the Project identified the need for both a new tool and a new approach to how housing resources are administered, which LAHSA and our partners are excited to share more about in the coming months,” Yee said. A further statement, from LAHSA spokesperson Ahmad Chapman, said the agency has continued to use its current system to match adults to permanent housing because the need is so great. The statement said LAHSA “has done a decent job of connecting various racial groups experiencing homelessness to permanent supportive housing” but recognizes “significant room for improvement” in reducing racial disparities. Advocates have questioned for years whether the scoring system accurately reflects the vulnerabilities of Black people. But the evidence until now has been largely anecdotal. For its analysis, The Markup obtained scoring data through public records requests from LAHSA, which collects surveys from a sprawling network of nonprofits that administer them. The survey LAHSA oversees plays a pivotal role in allocating scarce resources. The results can influence whether a person is matched quickly to a permanent home, spends years waiting for help, or doesn’t get a home at all. But they are not the only factor. For example, a building may open that accepts only tenants who are veterans over 55 years old, or only those with a certain medical condition. Case managers also have opportunities to press for housing for people when they feel the survey score isn’t properly reflecting the direness of their situation. LAHSA is required to use some kind of prioritization system to become eligible for certain federal housing funds under established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The tool it uses for adults was created in 2013 by two consulting groups. As of 2015, the VI‑SPDAT had been adopted by dozens of communities across the U.S. rules But in the years following, the evidence that the tool is poor at predicting outcomes and disproportionately harms Black people has added up. Dennis Culhane, a professor of social policy at the University of Pennsylvania, said and that of has found that the VI‑SPDAT is bad at predicting which people experiencing homelessness**,** without help, will die in the near future or be incarcerated or hospitalized. his research his colleagues in the field “The VI-SPDAT was like flipping a coin in terms of the predictability,” Culhane said. He said that, perhaps because of stigmatizing questions, Black people are more hesitant to describe their history with doctors or police, leading to lower scores. From Survey to Housing The case managers use to determine people’s score has dozens of questions that must be answered. The questions on the survey ask whether the person took an ambulance recently or talked to the police after witnessing a crime. 35-page packet If so, the survey asks how many times. If either happened four or more times in the past six months, that’s one point added on the 17-point scale. The survey asks whether the person has been beaten up recently, takes “risky” actions like sharing needles, or owes someone money. Other questions focus on emotional fulfillment, or on social lives. “Do you have planned activities, other than just surviving, that make you feel happy and fulfilled?” one asks. The points are tallied into the “vulnerability,” or as it’s otherwise known in the field, the “acuity” score. The higher the person’s vulnerability, as measured by the survey, the higher priority they’re supposed to be for permanent housing. When a new building opens or a vacancy otherwise arises, designated “matchers” are responsible for finding the most qualified unhoused clients for the space. They make this choice based on any criteria particular to the building as well as the vulnerability scores. In L.A., some have questioned whether the tool and its simple 0–17 scores can meet the diverse challenges of a sprawling program that shelters tens of thousands of people. Hazel Lopez, director of Coordinated Entry Systems with nonprofit housing services provider The People Concern, gave the example of an unhoused, terminally ill cancer patient her organization worked with. The person hadn’t been without housing for that long and thus might not have received a high vulnerability score, but clearly needed help immediately. In those situations, she said, nonprofit services work around the scoring system, advocating directly with LAHSA to try obtain help and telling the agency, “This might be one of those anomalies where the assessment isn’t capturing this person’s situation, but we know that they’re a little more vulnerable than most.” USC professor Eric Rice is part of the team studying how to make LAHSA’s system more equitable, including testing a tool that more accurately predicts outcomes and potentially changes how housing is allocated. “We’re talking hundreds, if not thousands, of people who could be helped who are maybe being overlooked,” Rice said. Evelin Montoya and Berenice Hernandez-Rodriguez are matchers working for The People Concern in Los Angeles’s Service Planning Area Four, an area that includes skid row. They say people with higher scores are generally placed first in line for housing offers. “We filter our 17s, our 16s, and 15s—that’s where we go first,” Montoya said. If a high-scoring person doesn’t meet the requirements for a particular vacancy, such as being a veteran or being over 65 years old, the matchers go down the list, finding the next person who fits a building’s criteria. The case manager’s personal judgment can come into play, they say, and housing organizations can request an exception directly from the housing services authority when they feel a survey score is not accurate. Individual case managers will also vary in how they score and place people. Sometimes, Montoya said, a case manager may have just started their first social services job a week before—“no training, no guidance”—and not be able to administer the survey properly. Another might try to game the system in their clients’ favor. “Sometimes we have case managers that are notorious for everybody on their caseload being a 17,” Montoya said, “because they also know that higher acuity equals housing.” Eroding Confidence in Scores As Los Angeles looks at testing a new scoring system, the two groups that created the vulnerability survey are backing away from it. In 2016, one of those groups, Community Solutions, the false notion that the tool could “eliminate the need for human judgment in housing decisions.” warned in a blog post of “the Robot Trap,” Community Solutions’ Beth Sandor, who wrote that post, said that a score is ideally “just one piece of information being brought into the room,” and one that is “not the decision-maker.” Some researchers have questioned whether the scoring system is an effective way to deal with homelessness even when only used to inform a human decision. One suggested the tool was a relatively poor way to predict who would fall back into homelessness, concluding that “total scores did not signiﬁcantly predict risk of return to homeless service.” 2018 study A from C4 Innovations, a consultancy group that works on homelessness services, examined similar systems in four counties across three states. The report found that people of color received statistically significantly lower scores than White people, and that race was a predictor of how high a score an individual received. 2019 report By 2020, the other group behind the tool was also in retreat. That group, OrgCode, announced that it would phase out support for the current survey approach, citing in part the questions about racial disparities. Rice says the real problem is the shortage of housing that forces officials to need a ranking system at all. “I think that in some ways these vulnerability tools that I’m working on trying to improve are a function of a failed system where we don’t have enough resources dedicated to solving the problem,” he said. There are remedies for someone with a low score. People experiencing homelessness who are aware of the scores and concerned that theirs is not high enough can request that a case manager survey them again, and LAHSA on exactly how the score should be reassessed. provides guidance The People Concern recommends that people request new scores as their circumstances change, so case managers can assess whether they’ll go up higher on the vulnerability scale. Chantel Jones said she didn’t think much about racial disparities when she was going through the system in Los Angeles. She was just trying to figure out how to get into permanent housing. After a couple of years in the shelter, she connected with a case manager from The People Concern who administered the survey to her again. This time, trusting this case manager more than she had her first one, she opened up and revealed more about her drinking and mental-health issues. She thus appeared more “vulnerable” and scored higher. When a new building opened up about a year later, she moved into a studio apartment. She had support services in the building when she needed them, and the first few months went well. She relearned some skills, like how to shop at the grocery store after years of eating fast food. She called her sister for help with putting together chicken fettuccine. “I’ve gotta do baby steps right now,” she said. And she was still dealing with anger over the past few years of living through a “circus,” she said. “Don’t think for a minute it was easy for me to get to where I’m at,” Jones said. “Because it wasn’t.” This story was copublished with the . L.A.'s Scoring System for Subsidized Housing Is Not Doing Enough for Black and Latino People

Considering the vast majority of that is attributable to Binance chain, Pancake Swap is holding roughly 30% of all the network's liquidity. Certainly, that is a very high concentration, but it is lower than its previous levels of over 40%. 6. Strong Burn Mechanism Burning has become of the few widely adopted economic modules for digital assets that exert tremendous supply-side pressure. While there are arguments regarding the exact implementations of it and whether or not the implications of it are properly effective, the six years of a burning mechanism present in BNB has removed ~46 million tokens from circulation, considering that the total max supply was 200 million, to begin with, that translates to nearly 25% of the entire supply being no longer available. When measuring against the token's historic performance and the anticipated perpetual burn rate of 1.1% year-on-year, burning might prove to be one of the most powerful forces for driving ecosystem growth over long enough time frames. 😞 Weaknesses (Internal) (Harmful) Binance has defined itself as a powerful brand with high-quality features and a strong social presence. Ecosystem Application Nature Everybody should already understand that Binance is a centralized project. There is nothing wrong with centralized projects (except for, of course, the risks of malicious intentions that might be undesirable for end users and the fact that the SEC will have stronger cases to pursue some kind of legal recourse), but the main issue with Binance's centralization is that they incessantly bill themselves as being decentralized. The Nakamoto coefficient is a rough measure of a network's decentralization in terms of the threshold of validators that must be manipulated in order to overthrow the network. In the case of Binance (which has 29 validators), the Nakamoto coefficient is 8; ranking it at the very low end, teetering towards a higher degree of centralization. 2. Low Nakamoto Coefficient 🧐 Opportunities (External) (Helpful) 1. External Support Initiatives Binance is possibly the most supportive layer one network for all of the projects that try to build on top of it. Hosting a multitude of hackathons, incubators, accelerators, grants, and bounty programs, Binance has attracted so many burgeoning ideas with its brilliant marketing and attractive incentives. Builder grants, Gas grants, MVB accelerator, Zero-2-Hero, Kickstart, and countless other initiatives are helping early-stage projects bootstrap themselves. 2. Low TVL With around $3 Billion USD in total value locked across a small group of applications, the amount of value locked on chain is ~9x lower than the project's market cap. The 1:9 ratio produces mixed signals (positive and negative); however, given the macro backdrop of declining global market values and TVL on every chain and platform, the current TVL foreshadows a potential explosion upwards, which would then likely exert positive pressure on all assets. With just a handful of applications dominating Binance chain by measures of value locked, volume produced, gas fees generated, and unique active addresses involved, there is a large gap in the market for better solutions to arrive on Binance's network. Not long ago, Uniswap bridged to BSC, and yet Pancakeswap still holds an outsized portion of TVL. Given how much ecosystemic support Binance provides, it is highly likely (if not inevitable) that better products will eventually arrive and supercharge the ecosystem. 3. Low Application Diversity 😳 Threats (External) (Harmful) 1. SEC Clampdown In the second quarter of 2023, the SEC has thrown full force at the overall Binance ecosystem, claiming they have been engaging in illegal operations, including offering trading/sales of unregistered securities, including their own native BNB token. Contrary to traditional targeting, even the CEO of Binance has become a focal point of witch-hunting. 2. Executive Board Resignations Starting way back in 2021 with the resignation of the Binance US CEO Cathy Coley, followed by the quick arrival and short-lived departure of Brian Brooks, directors for every department of the company have been jumping ship at an insane rate. Over the course of 2023 alone, more than 10 people with mission-critical roles in the organization have voluntarily stepped away from their positions. From product leads to marketing to strategy to compliance, have left the organization one after the other. While there could be (and have been arguments made for both sides of the situation), the loss of so many key people can easily spill over into massive operational friction that arises by not having the qualified professional talent helping steer the continuing evolution of the project. Now time and resources must be spent educating new people into these roles. Binance implemented its own stablecoin, BUSD (Binance USD), through the use of a trusted, regulated issuer, Paxos. Suddenly, in February of 2023, NYDFS (the New York Department of Financial Services) forced Paxos to halt its issuance of BUSD on the grounds that they will be sued by the government for dealing with an unregistered security. This single issue drained over $1 billion USD from Binance Chain's stablecoin network value and allowed Tether to swoop in and become the dominant stablecoin on the network. 3. BUSD Debacle Takeaway: From its humble beginnings as a crypto-to-crypto exchange that went live through an ICO back in 2017, Binance is one of the strongest brands in the entire industry. As it pertains to a crypto asset brand, Binance is, without a doubt, the Leader. Being the leader means that you will attract a lot of attention, a lot of it good, the majority of it not so good. Binance is flush with trash at the moment. One thing that I cannot get over, its projects are raising money on a concept that does not need a token at all, but what's worse is that these degenerates put "Burning" as a token utility… Why would you give money to something stupid enough to consider burning a utility? Burning is a monetary policy to control the supply-side dynamics of a digital asset. Not a utility. I can rant about this for days, but let's just move on. Besides the ecosystem of ghost projects, Binance continues to be a powerhouse in the industry. Regardless of whether you want to discuss the centralized exchange side or the "decentralized" blockchain ecosystem, Binance has made a permanent mark on the Crypto industry Conclusion: The current state of Binance is delicate… But I am cautiously optimistic. The history of the project, its social acuity, intelligent leadership, effective marketing, and quality products all incline me to believe Binance will be here regardless of what the FUD may indicate in the near term. All said and done, Binance is only suffering right now due to , in spite of which the platforms continue to operate, and (so far) all user funds have been SAFU. regulatory problems The larger the problem Binance lives through, the more resilient it becomes to future events. Navigating its current problems would ultimately propel Binance into the "too-big-to-fail" caliber. Would I personally invest in BNB? Very, very carefully, and only through a DCA approach. It seems having some BNB/BSC just to always have access to the network for bridging, emergency trading, or getting paid in stablecoins and then moving them elsewhere is such a no-brainer; in fact that is probably best practice for overall being able to operate in Web3. The best way to capture as much upside as possible in the coming flood of capital is by understanding how to get involved with quality projects. In order to do that, you have to (very romantic, I know). DYOR Doing your own research; The painstaking art of having to comb through different websites, run numbers, conduct background checks, and hop from platform to platform. Swaths of dry data points, similar products, and technical lingo can get dizzying (let alone boring). Guess what; Due diligence is not sexy. You know what is sexy, though? Making decisions with confidence and then reaping massive f*cking gains for being a smart, consistent, asset-allocating gangster. So let’s get to it. Simply put a mixture of a project's fundamentals and technicals. Qualitative evaluation in crypto is like ghost hunting. You can see it but just can’t seem to touch it. Scams, buzzwords, and endorsements by “reputable” people end up being total flops. Good technology with a good team working on a good concept, but for some strange reason still goes belly up. As proven by the failures of good ideas and the stunning successes of idiotic memes, determining the very essence of what is “quality” actually means in regards to crypto requires a shift in our mental models. Rule #1 in Crypto Quality Assessments “ Learn, and then Think for yourself” Don’t just be a lazy sheep. The vast majority of us are not here “for the technology”. The simple truth is that we want to be a part of the future and make good money in the process. The best place to start is by being brutally honest with yourself, stop trying to virtue signal, and just define your own personal objectives. Once you have that moral alignment, you will have a higher degree of mental clarity. Don’t let that clarity be hijacked and hogwashed by the anons on . Twitter Given that crypto is basically built on a foundation of peer-to-peer technologies and exists outside of direct regulatory oversight, so much trashy marketing is taking place on social media that it is repulsive. It’s okay to find a few accounts that are providing you value and have some degree of validity behind them; but even then, don’t let random people online tell you what to buy. If they are selling it, why the hell would you buy it from them… (this only really applies to new projects, although some bigger well-funded projects will engage full-fledged botnets in psyops to pump up their assets right before the market takes a sh*t, so just always be aware). I digress. Rule # 2 in Crypto Quality Assessments Data is not created Equal. Data in crypto is absolutely manipulated. While we love the pseudonymity, privacy, and distance from regulators; it does come with its own costs. Data in crypto is 95% (if not more) absolutely fake. Volume on exchanges is *mostly fake (centralized and decentralized). TVL on Uniswap is a decent measure of real value in a protocol. TVL in some fork of a fork, on an obscure chain, full of assets that nobody has ever heard of, meh not so much. Cumulative charts, such as “on-chain addresses” is literally worthless; by the nature of the data, those charts can only go up; so for the love of god, ignore them. Applying models of evaluations from legacy finance might have a sprinkle of validity to it; applying modified versions of them (such as the NVT ratio which remotely resembles P/E) makes sense… until it doesn’t. Whenever dealing with cold hard numbers in crypto, you need to accept the fact that even after the last decade of intellectual infrastructure being built around it; you must still learn where to source them and how to apply them. Rule # 3 in Crypto Quality Assessments: “Only fools Rush In” “Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity” This one requires mental balance unlike any other. You cannot simply be reactive to your initial reviews and assume that they are correct. and at the same time… You cannot waste time delaying decisions; otherwise, opportunity shall slip away right from underneath your feet. Balancing the urgency to act with the emotional acuity not to react requires that you tap into a higher frequency of thought; combine the counterintuitive truths of both to drive your actions. Imagine you conducted your research and arrived at the conclusion that this one is a must-buy (for whatever reason). Take a day, let all of the information marinate in your mind. Do some reconnaissance; see what others are thinking about this (those not already involved with the project). Test out your theory on another similar asset (if there is anything that you can compare it to). Perhaps the trickiest part of it all; once you have slept on it and had some revelations in the shower. Act. Commit to it. Do not pussy foot. Either configure a plan for how you will get involved or totally disregard it; you have a finite amount of mental/emotional capacity; declutter as much as possible. The meaning of the word “decision” stems from ancient language and translates to “making a final judgment”. Understand that when you choose something, you simultaneously deny everything else. Kinda philosophical for a crypto analysis. Sweet. Now then, Onwards from the ethereal (no pun intended) and into the more tangible. What to look for and Where to Find it Generally speaking, there are 6 information rich areas that must be addressed in a quality assessment; The Brand (not just the colors, but its mission) The Maths (economic sustainability) The Data (basic data) (social media) The Presence The Content (information and its availability) The Design (visual is important, but conceptual even more) So then, where do we extrapolate this information from? There is no 100% perfect framework that works for every project. Some projects are focused on technology and don't need to spend *as much* time on social media presence as others, whereas too much social presence shows a likely overreaching dependence on marketing rather than fundamentals. Each project should have its own unique relationship to the marketplace. Some factors (such as branding) are based on personal preference. While you may assume that a brand is just hideous, the market might disagree with you or simply just not care. Regardless, let's run through the QA touchpoints: 1. Website How you do anything, is how you do everything. Every single project that is dedicated to quality must have a website. Yes, some of these new meta-projects don't have websites; they solely exist in communities on social media platforms. Maybe they have made money for some people; but as time passes, you will notice that everybody eventually needs one. Whenever on the site, some of the most important things to keep an eye out for will vary based on case-by-case bases. Don’t get too obsessive here about everything being perfect, but there are some non-negotiables: We're not talking about a ridging grammatic structure that adheres to never missing a comma… We’re talking about just low-effort errors. One error is a red flag but is forgivable. Anything more than 2 is downright disregard on behalf of the team in terms of their attention to detail. Odds are that if the website has too many misspellings (something rather trivial), then there will be other logical errors in other areas of the project. Don’t just let it slide because teams are “not native”; in this day and age, being from another country has nothing to do with delivering quality language. 1) Spelling. The concept of the project must be made as clear as possible, as soon as possible. Things must be organized, links must be pointing to the correct destinations, and there must be a sense of coherent flow and consistency. 2) Cohesiveness. granted, many quality projects (such as Bitcoin and Binance) might not have this directly on their website. However, any early-stage project MUST. 3) Team. This is a very controversial point because everybody loves the story about anonymous founders changing people's lives with incredible wealth… however, if that is your preference, you are not investing; you are gambling. This is usually the first threshold of hard red flags. - If you see teams with no links to social media (red flag 🚩 ) - If the teams are using some discombobulated filter that makes it hard to see their faces (🚩red flag) - If you see teams that are working on other projects simultaneously (🚩 red flag) 2. Ranking Sites Directories such as CoinMarketCap, CoinGecko, CryptoRank, and a slew of others, are a fundamental requirement for any project. If even low-quality scams can go out of their way to get listed on these sites, there is absolutely no reason that a quality project is not. Check out how many different resources actually list it and inspect the market information about the project. This one is a matter of asking the right questions: - How long has it been trading? - What trading pairs does it have? - What is the price action looking like? - What exchanges is it listed on? - How many exchanges is it listed on? - How many followers are there? (if there is this option) - What is the Market Capitalization? - What is the circulating supply? 3. Explorers Assuming the project already has a token in circulation, you must hop on over to the chain explorer and run a manual inspection. This involves a little bit of detective work. Try to retain naturality with a light dose of skepticism; don't start confabulating stories in your own mind about what things mean; just stay objective and collect information to build a mental model of what's actually happening. Take a look at who/what address deployed the contract. This should generally be a very clean account with minimal (or none) other actions besides the deployment of the contract. If you come across an account with a prolonged history prior to deploying the token contract, review it. See what other assets it's holding, what the nature of the transactions was, and how the frequency relates to the contract deployment. On the contract’s page itself, take a look at the holder distribution, and actually follow through to see what those accounts are (especially any holding more than >1% of the token’s supply). Look to see that the contract has had some form of verification take place. Funnel through the transaction history and get a sense of what the token holders are doing on-chain. See what the holder count looks like. 4. Social Media / Community This has become a necessity for all projects, businesses, and individuals. Having a social media presence is non-negotiable. The first thing to assess is the platforms being used; crypto projects thrive on three major platforms Twitter, Reddit, and Youtube; everything else is secondary. It's awesome, but not necessary to use them all; the base requirement is at least one of the three platforms. Start looking for answers to these questions: - review the last 10/20 posts, → what is the engagement quantity on posts (how many likes/comments) → what is the quality of that engagement on posts (what are the comments saying?) → who is engaging with the posts? (open the profiles of accounts that are interacting, and figure out if it is a bot or a real person {should be pretty easy}) - who follows them (other notable projects/individuals or bots) - What kind of material is the project pushing? (educational, informational, advertising, general) - How often do they post? It is highly recommended to try using social media analytics platforms that provide in-depth insights that are not available on the sites themselves. Things such as how the follower count fluctuates, mentions, and global engagement ratios. 5. Content Content is becoming the defacto method of building a project’s brand image and voice. It tells their message, optimizes their SEO, and truly reveals their communicative intentions. When speaking about content, it’s not just social media chatter (yes, your tweets are content) but we also know that as it relates to a crypto project, your community is your best social media marketing proof. When speaking about content, were talking about a multi-faceted model provided in multiple different form factors. If a project is dedicated to communicating with its audience, it will provide short-form and long-form content that is written and posted across multiple venues, including its websites, medium, substack, mirror, and others (no less than three). Visual content such as images, gifs, and videos should also be well distributed, starting with on the website and including their social media(s). Of course, we have the auditory; included with video content, auditory also includes AMAs and podcasts (uncommon). HackerNoon, Another form of fundamental content is, of course, the core project documentation. This means whitepapers, litepapers, dev docs, pitch decks any other formal content. Taking this a step further, you can leverage some of the more advanced data points built on Crypto-native models including: - NVT Ratio (Network Value to Transactions) - NVM Ratio (Network Value to Metcalfs Law) - MVRV Ratio (Market Value to Realized Value) - Money flows (what assets are being traded against it and how frequently) Final Thoughts Doing your due diligence will set you apart from the vast majority of participants that blindly follow. It will help develop a basic framework for how you structure your thinking by asking the right questions and understanding what to look for. Refine your thinking.
