Underground - V Come, can a man who attempts to find enjoyment in the very feeling of his own degradation possibly have a spark of respect for himself? I am not saying this now from any mawkish kind of remorse. And, indeed, I could never endure saying, “Forgive me, Papa, I won’t do it again,” not because I am incapable of saying that—on the contrary, perhaps just because I have been too capable of it, and in what a way, too. As though of design I used to get into trouble in cases when I was not to blame in any way. That was the nastiest part of it. At the same time I was genuinely touched and penitent, I used to shed tears and, of course, deceived myself, though I was not acting in the least and there was a sick feeling in my heart at the time.... For that one could not blame even the laws of nature, though the laws of nature have continually all my life offended me more than anything. It is loathsome to remember it all, but it was loathsome even then. Of course, a minute or so later I would realise wrathfully that it was all a lie, a revolting lie, an affected lie, that is, all this penitence, this emotion, these vows of reform. You will ask why did I worry myself with such antics: answer, because it was very dull to sit with one’s hands folded, and so one began cutting capers. That is really it. Observe yourselves more carefully, gentlemen, then you will understand that it is so. I invented adventures for myself and made up a life, so as at least to live in some way. How many times it has happened to me—well, for instance, to take offence simply on purpose, for nothing; and one knows oneself, of course, that one is offended at nothing; that one is putting it on, but yet one brings oneself at last to the point of being really offended. All my life I have had an impulse to play such pranks, so that in the end I could not control it in myself. Another time, twice, in fact, I tried hard to be in love. I suffered, too, gentlemen, I assure you. In the depth of my heart there was no faith in my suffering, only a faint stir of mockery, but yet I did suffer, and in the real, orthodox way; I was jealous, beside myself ... and it was all from ennui, gentlemen, all from ennui; inertia overcame me. You know the direct, legitimate fruit of consciousness is inertia, that is, conscious sitting-with-the-hands-folded. I have referred to this already. I repeat, I repeat with emphasis: all “direct” persons and men of action are active just because they are stupid and limited. How explain that? I will tell you: in consequence of their limitation they take immediate and secondary causes for primary ones, and in that way persuade themselves more quickly and easily than other people do that they have found an infallible foundation for their activity, and their minds are at ease and you know that is the chief thing. To begin to act, you know, you must first have your mind completely at ease and no trace of doubt left in it. Why, how am I, for example, to set my mind at rest? Where are the primary causes on which I am to build? Where are my foundations? Where am I to get them from? I exercise myself in reflection, and consequently with me every primary cause at once draws after itself another still more primary, and so on to infinity. That is just the essence of every sort of consciousness and reflection. It must be a case of the laws of nature again. What is the result of it in the end? Why, just the same. Remember I spoke just now of vengeance. (I am sure you did not take it in.) I said that a man revenges himself because he sees justice in it. Therefore he has found a primary cause, that is, justice. And so he is at rest on all sides, and consequently he carries out his revenge calmly and successfully, being persuaded that he is doing a just and honest thing. But I see no justice in it, I find no sort of virtue in it either, and consequently if I attempt to revenge myself, it is only out of spite. Spite, of course, might overcome everything, all my doubts, and so might serve quite successfully in place of a primary cause, precisely because it is not a cause. But what is to be done if I have not even spite (I began with that just now, you know). In consequence again of those accursed laws of consciousness, anger in me is subject to chemical disintegration. You look into it, the object flies off into air, your reasons evaporate, the criminal is not to be found, the wrong becomes not a wrong but a phantom, something like the toothache, for which no one is to blame, and consequently there is only the same outlet left again—that is, to beat the wall as hard as you can. So you give it up with a wave of the hand because you have not found a fundamental cause. And try letting yourself be carried away by your feelings, blindly, without reflection, without a primary cause, repelling consciousness at least for a time; hate or love, if only not to sit with your hands folded. The day after tomorrow, at the latest, you will begin despising yourself for having knowingly deceived yourself. Result: a soap-bubble and inertia. Oh, gentlemen, do you know, perhaps I consider myself an intelligent man, only because all my life I have been able neither to begin nor to finish anything. Granted I am a babbler, a harmless vexatious babbler, like all of us. But what is to be done if the direct and sole vocation of every intelligent man is babble, that is, the intentional pouring of water through a sieve? Underground - III With people who know how to revenge themselves and to stand up for themselves in general, how is it done? Why, when they are possessed, let us suppose, by the feeling of revenge, then for the time there is nothing else but that feeling left in their whole being. Such a gentleman simply dashes straight for his object like an infuriated bull with its horns down, and nothing but a wall will stop him. (By the way: facing the wall, such gentlemen—that is, the “direct” persons and men of action—are genuinely nonplussed. For them a wall is not an evasion, as for us people who think and consequently do nothing; it is not an excuse for turning aside, an excuse for which we are always very glad, though we scarcely believe in it ourselves, as a rule. No, they are nonplussed in all sincerity. The wall has for them something tranquillising, morally soothing, final—maybe even something mysterious ... but of the wall later.) Well, such a direct person I regard as the real normal man, as his tender mother nature wished to see him when she graciously brought him into being on the earth. I envy such a man till I am green in the face. He is stupid. I am not disputing that, but perhaps the normal man should be stupid, how do you know? Perhaps it is very beautiful, in fact. And I am the more persuaded of that suspicion, if one can call it so, by the fact that if you take, for instance, the antithesis of the normal man, that is, the man of acute consciousness, who has come, of course, not out of the lap of nature but out of a retort (this is almost mysticism, gentlemen, but I suspect this, too), this retort-made man is sometimes so nonplussed in the presence of his antithesis that with all his exaggerated consciousness he genuinely thinks of himself as a mouse and not a man. It may be an acutely conscious mouse, yet it is a mouse, while the other is a man, and therefore, et caetera, et caetera. And the worst of it is, he himself, his very own self, looks on himself as a mouse; no one asks him to do so; and that is an important point. Now let us look at this mouse in action. Let us suppose, for instance, that it feels insulted, too (and it almost always does feel insulted), and wants to revenge itself, too. There may even be a greater accumulation of spite in it than in l’homme de la nature et de la vérité. The base and nasty desire to vent that spite on its assailant rankles perhaps even more nastily in it than in l’homme de la nature et de la vérité. For through his innate stupidity the latter looks upon his revenge as justice pure and simple; while in consequence of his acute consciousness the mouse does not believe in the justice of it. To come at last to the deed itself, to the very act of revenge. Apart from the one fundamental nastiness the luckless mouse succeeds in creating around it so many other nastinesses in the form of doubts and questions, adds to the one question so many unsettled questions that there inevitably works up around it a sort of fatal brew, a stinking mess, made up of its doubts, emotions, and of the contempt spat upon it by the direct men of action who stand solemnly about it as judges and arbitrators, laughing at it till their healthy sides ache. Of course the only thing left for it is to dismiss all that with a wave of its paw, and, with a smile of assumed contempt in which it does not even itself believe, creep ignominiously into its mouse-hole. There in its nasty, stinking, underground home our insulted, crushed and ridiculed mouse promptly becomes absorbed in cold, malignant and, above all, everlasting spite. For forty years together it will remember its injury down to the smallest, most ignominious details, and every time will add, of itself, details still more ignominious, spitefully teasing and tormenting itself with its own imagination. It will itself be ashamed of its imaginings, but yet it will recall it all, it will go over and over every detail, it will invent unheard of things against itself, pretending that those things might happen, and will forgive nothing. Maybe it will begin to revenge itself, too, but, as it were, piecemeal, in trivial ways, from behind the stove, incognito, without believing either in its own right to vengeance, or in the success of its revenge, knowing that from all its efforts at revenge it will suffer a hundred times more than he on whom it revenges itself, while he, I daresay, will not even scratch himself. On its deathbed it will recall it all over again, with interest accumulated over all the years and ... But it is just in that cold, abominable half despair, half belief, in that conscious burying oneself alive for grief in the underworld for forty years, in that acutely recognised and yet partly doubtful hopelessness of one’s position, in that hell of unsatisfied desires turned inward, in that fever of oscillations, of resolutions determined for ever and repented of again a minute later—that the savour of that strange enjoyment of which I have spoken lies. It is so subtle, so difficult of analysis, that persons who are a little limited, or even simply persons of strong nerves, will not understand a single atom of it. “Possibly,” you will add on your own account with a grin, “people will not understand it either who have never received a slap in the face,” and in that way you will politely hint to me that I, too, perhaps, have had the experience of a slap in the face in my life, and so I speak as one who knows. I bet that you are thinking that. But set your minds at rest, gentlemen, I have not received a slap in the face, though it is absolutely a matter of indifference to me what you may think about it. Possibly, I even regret, myself, that I have given so few slaps in the face during my life. But enough ... not another word on that subject of such extreme interest to you. I will continue calmly concerning persons with strong nerves who do not understand a certain refinement of enjoyment. Though in certain circumstances these gentlemen bellow their loudest like bulls, though this, let us suppose, does them the greatest credit, yet, as I have said already, confronted with the impossible they subside at once. The impossible means the stone wall! What stone wall? Why, of course, the laws of nature, the deductions of natural science, mathematics. As soon as they prove to you, for instance, that you are descended from a monkey, then it is no use scowling, accept it for a fact. When they prove to you that in reality one drop of your own fat must be dearer to you than a hundred thousand of your fellow-creatures, and that this conclusion is the final solution of all so-called virtues and duties and all such prejudices and fancies, then you have just to accept it, there is no help for it, for twice two is a law of mathematics. Just try refuting it. “Upon my word, they will shout at you, it is no use protesting: it is a case of twice two makes four! Nature does not ask your permission, she has nothing to do with your wishes, and whether you like her laws or dislike them, you are bound to accept her as she is, and consequently all her conclusions. A wall, you see, is a wall ... and so on, and so on.” Merciful Heavens! but what do I care for the laws of nature and arithmetic, when, for some reason I dislike those laws and the fact that twice two makes four? Of course I cannot break through the wall by battering my head against it if I really have not the strength to knock it down, but I am not going to be reconciled to it simply because it is a stone wall and I have not the strength. As though such a stone wall really were a consolation, and really did contain some word of conciliation, simply because it is as true as twice two makes four. Oh, absurdity of absurdities! How much better it is to understand it all, to recognise it all, all the impossibilities and the stone wall; not to be reconciled to one of those impossibilities and stone walls if it disgusts you to be reconciled to it; by the way of the most inevitable, logical combinations to reach the most revolting conclusions on the everlasting theme, that even for the stone wall you are yourself somehow to blame, though again it is as clear as day you are not to blame in the least, and therefore grinding your teeth in silent impotence to sink into luxurious inertia, brooding on the fact that there is no one even for you to feel vindictive against, that you have not, and perhaps never will have, an object for your spite, that it is a sleight of hand, a bit of juggling, a card-sharper’s trick, that it is simply a mess, no knowing what and no knowing who, but in spite of all these uncertainties and jugglings, still there is an ache in you, and the more you do not know, the worse the ache. I've always been one to suggest a fantastic self-help book to others. If you've ever tuned into my podcast, you've probably noticed the jam-packed bookshelf in the background of my videos – filled to the brim with books on personal development, productivity, and growth. There's something truly magical about these books; they give us a peek into the thought processes of the world's most brilliant minds and provide us with access to time-tested methods for enhancing our lives. But, of course, nothing is ever perfect. In the realm of self-help content, there's always a bit of a catch, and that often comes in the form of an illusion of progress. We can devour these fantastic books, absorb countless strategies, and yet somehow feel like we're not making any real progress – even though our mental library is growing at an astounding pace. So, what's going on here? Could it be that self-help content might do more harm than good in some cases? Let's take a closer look and dive deeper into this conundrum. When Determination Becomes Delusion "If there is anything unique about the human animal, it is that it has the ability to grow knowledge at an accelerating rate while being chronically incapable of learning from experience." - The Silence of Animals, John Gray It's easy to get caught up in the idea that learning more is always better. But if we don't take action on what we learn, those lessons simply become a mental delusion – and our determination to improve will soon turn into an illusion of progress. We can easily relate this concept to physical fitness – we can read countless diet books and exercise manuals, but until we actually hit the gym and move our bodies around, all that knowledge isn't going to do much for us. The same is true for self-help content; it needs to be transformed from knowledge into action if it's going to have any real impact. Why We Fall For Fake Progress Have you ever delved into the 'fake progress bar' lore? While researching for this newsletter, I found a – followed by a bunch of other similar articles – that made me think more about this progress delusion concept. fascinating article in the Atlantic Here's how it works. Progress bars are like powerlines; you don't always acknowledge or notice their existence, but in many ways, you rely on them. A progress bar (the loading animation of a bar or other shape filling up, often accompanied by a percentage) is used by hundreds of thousands of websites to let us know there's some invisible activity happening while we wait. We rely on the gradual filling of the bar to ease our patience. But progress isn't always being made. Is it? The author of this particular Atlantic article had investigated the loading bar on the TurboTax website and found that, surprise surprise, the animation was fixed for everyone. It was no reflection of how 'loaded' the page was. It just made the user feel like progress was tangibly taking place. When you see it, you can't unsee it. These fake progress bars are absolutely everywhere! Benevolent Deception? Digging a little deeper, I traced the inspiration for the Atlantic article back to a phenomenon called ' ' coined by Professor Eytan Adar in 2013. It's a term given to the slight delusions we're presented with when interacting with digital or physical products. We're told what's supposed to be happening, but it isn't always the case. benevolent deception For example, crosswalk buttons don't actually control the passing of traffic. They simply give us an awareness of the crosswalk and a sense of control over the situation. The fascinating part of Professor Adar's paper is his use of the word 'benevolent'. He explains that certain acts of deceit are actually beneficial for the consumer; they provide a sense of control and help to reduce stress, and therefore we can call them benevolent rather than malevolent. Since I was researching to see why we play tricks on ourselves in personal progress, though, I took something else away from the paper. What happens if we construct our own personal 'fake progress bar'? Can we still call it an act of benevolence? No, Self-Delusion is Not Benevolent The problem with giving ourselves a fake sense of accomplishment is pretty obvious: we don't have powerful algorithms and codes running in the background, ensuring an eventual result. We can't rely on the bar to fill up by itself. So in the act of making progress, we fall further and further behind. Whether we realize it or not, many of us construct our own fake progress bars on a regular basis. I don't want to make us all feel called out here – but I think it's important to delve into a few specific examples. Let's zoom in on this. Downloading Fitness Apps The act of downloading an app or paying for a subscription is incredibly tactile. There's the haptic feedback from your phone when the confirmation happens; there's the financial transaction of paying for a membership that makes the process feel active rather than passive. The simple process of making an account and getting the confirmation email makes you think, "Wow, I'm really doing myself a favor here." Maybe you spend the first few days playing around with the settings, locking in your health goals, and tracking your progress. Then you reach a breaking point. For many of us, we've given ourselves enough evidence of hard work – downloading the app, committing to the payment plan, getting set up – that we give ourselves a pat on the back and forget all about it. Listening to Self-Improvement Podcasts I'm an enormous fan of podcasts. Hell – I've got my own! And I'll never renounce the incredible power they have to change lives, influence minds, and help people become their best selves. But even podcasts can be a trap. They can be a significant investment of your time, so you wind up feeling like a sort of 'self-improvement scholar.' You're taking in all that beneficial information and advice, so you must be making progress mentally – right? In this situation, it really depends on your level of attentiveness and your willingness to apply what you've learned. If you're numbly listening to a podcast on the train ride to work, half-asleep and only vaguely listening, the only kick you're really getting is gratification. "I'm using my time wisely! I'm learning!" You're only learning, though, if you get up the next day and act on what you heard. Watching 'That Girl' or 'That Guy' YouTube Videos If you haven't seen the trend going around yet, there's an onslaught of YouTube videos promoting a clean, freakishly perfect way of life. Think 5 a.m. gym sessions. Watching the sunrise and going to bed at 9 p.m. Using an avocado face mask and suddenly achieving perfect skin. Eating microgreens on a bed of kale for breakfast. Working for ten hours straight without ever breaking focus. (Can you tell I'm skeptical?) These videos have incredible production value, and they're designed to make you feel like you've got something to strive for. But here's the thing: most of us don't have the time or energy to stick to our own version of 'that girl' or 'that guy.' Most of us shouldn't waste time on it, either, because you don't need glowing skin or a 5am wake-up to be successful. Many people fall into a rut of consuming these videos by the hundreds, as though they'll absorb the habits via osmosis or something. And I sympathize – because they really are seductive, these videos. But they only contribute to the fake progress bar doomed to never load. Reading Self-Help Books Along the same lines as podcasts, reading self-help books gives you the illusion of progress because you're sinking time into a beneficial activity. Again, I'm not here to argue against self-help books – but you know what I'm talking about. The vast majority of these books just repackage the same old advice and make you feel like you've learned something new. If you're going to be a self-help consumer, you need an action plan. I love authors like Mark Manson who accompany their popular books with an actual practical guide or journal. They know exactly what I'm talking about. Otherwise, it's incredibly easy to tell yourself that progress is being made – then a few months (or years) down the track, you rifle through your pile of books and wonder why none of their messages ever stuck. Creating Notion Documents, Schedules, and Routines Notion has quite literally changed the game for productivity and record-keeping. You've got the ability to set up all sorts of schedules and routines; I know of many businesses that rely solely on Notion to stay organized. You can spend hours putting your entire life into tables and neatly formatted pages. Hours... and hours... and hours. And by the end of it, whether you use the documents or not, you feel accomplished. That's where the progress stops. Your brain has received the signal of accomplishment and you're content to move on. Making Real, Actual Progress Okay – I'll stop calling us all out now. Whether you identify with the examples I gave or not, we could all benefit from knowing how to make real progress and take action. I'm going to walk through each of the examples we just looked at and offer some tips for converting them from time-wasting activities to valuable investments of your energy. Fitness Apps Here's the trick I've learned after many free app trials and failed attempts at sticking to their advice. Ditch the apps altogether. Take notes on what could work for you – even write down some of the routines – but don't rely on the app itself to keep you on track. There's something so powerful about taking ownership of your fitness. If you rely on push notifications to tell you when to drop down for 20 push-ups, that sense of ownership ceases to exist (along with your willpower). It's perfectly fine to use apps as a starting-off point, and perhaps they work well for you – but if you're a serial app-ditcher, take things into your own hands. Manually set your own alarms. Write out your own workout routines based on what does and doesn't work for you. There will never be an app that covers all bases for you, so don't fall prey to the illusion of fake progress these apps bring. Podcasts This one's pretty simple. If you're serious about learning from the podcasts you listen to, you need to be taking some form of notes or applying what you hear. (Note that this doesn't relate to people listening to podcasts purely for entertainment. I mean the people who are genuinely trying to absorb knowledge and excel.) It might seem counter-productive to do this at first, but trust me: listen to important podcasts more than once. Listen as many times as it takes for the information to soak in. Take note of things that interest you, then go away and research more deeply on your own. Self-Help Books Same as with podcasts – you need to be taking notes and applying the advice you learn. Don't just skim through and move on; take the time to dive deep into each message that resonates with you, then find a way to apply it in your day-to-day life. This might mean creating an action plan or getting creative with how you can integrate the book's teachings into your routine without forcing yourself too hard (which defeats its purpose). Most of us are in the habit of finishing a book, taking a day or two, and then diving into the next one. That's how it's always been. I encourage you to break out of this pattern and give yourself some time to sit with the knowledge you've gained, though; a couple of days isn't enough to properly soak in the lessons you've learned. Idyllic YouTube Videos Quite frankly, I'd skip these altogether. They're unrealistic. They are addictive. After a few hours down the drain, you're left feeling inadequate and unmotivated. If you're looking for motivation or inspiration, find it elsewhere. There are plenty of positive YouTube channels that provide real advice, tips, and stories – not just a glossy-looking veneer of what life could be like if only you had the time, money, and otherworldly genetics to get there. Notion Documents When it comes to Notion – and any other form of life management – the issue arises when people are too obsessed with the aesthetics of it all. Yes, Notion does look beautiful and clean. But if you're spending more time creating a color-coded document than actually using it, something's wrong. The same goes for any other organizational tool you use. Before taking on yet another system or app, ask yourself: will this help me achieve my goals? What value am I getting out of this? How can I make sure that I'm not just wasting time here? It could also help to restrict yourself to one new implementation per week. If you draw up a budget in Notion this week, you have to commit to using it and updating it for an entire week (or however long you decide) before taking on something else. Is Progress the Be-All and End-All? I don't want to give the impression that progress is everything. It's not. Taking your time is important; enjoying things is important; resting is important. If you listen to a self-help podcast as a way to relax, all the power to you! The point I'm trying to make is that if you're looking for real progress, be mindful of how you spend your time. Ask yourself whether there's actual value in what you're doing and whether this activity will eventually lead to the results you want. If it won't, don't fall into the trap of thinking that 'fake progress' is enough; take action and break free from the illusion. The bar isn't going to load by itself, no matter how long you wait. When Progress is NOT Progress: How to Take Action and Break Free From the Illusion

Deceive Inc. is a multiplayer stealth first-person shooter developed by Sweet Bandits Studios and released on March 21, 2023, for PC, Xbox One, and PS5. Following an international ban on national spy agencies, a private corporation named Deceive Inc. soon claimed a monopoly over espionage. As company employees, players work in teams of three or alone to break into a secure vault, steal the objective, and reach an extraction point. Sounds easy. Well, you’ll also be competing against other spies looking to accomplish the same thing, as deploying multiple agents at once is a company practice. The competitive atmosphere is good for business. Deceive Inc. Characters and Agents with a roster of eight different agents. Players will start with three agents and unlock more by purchasing them with credits, which can only be earned in-game. The low price of five hundred credits per agent allows most players to unlock a new agent every couple of games, allowing them to unlock the full roster quickly. While the game does have a premium currency, called agent bonds, that can be bought with real money, it is only used to buy cosmetics such as weapon inks or agent skins, which can also be purchased with credits or earned through normal gameplay. Deceive Inc. launches Each agent boasts a unique ability, weapon, and passive trait and is divided into four archetypes to help better understand their play style. For example, the gentleman thief Larcin is a Scoundrel agent who can pickpocket valuable items when meleeing rival agents and briefly turn invisible to elude pursuers. Meanwhile, Deceive Inc.’s latest recruit, Squire, is a Vanguard agent who highlights useful objects like keycards and Intel for himself and his team. He also gains a quick speed boost whenever he takes combat damage, making him an excellent character for beginners to play as. In addition to this vast roster, each agent has a mastery level that increases as players continue to play as their favorite character. As they level up, they unlock character-themed customization options and modified abilities specific to that character. Holo-Cover and Gadgets Of course, no self-respecting spy should go out into the field without some fancy gadgets. One of the most essential pieces of equipment for Deceive Inc. agents is their standard-issue watch. It not only allows them to hack into devices to get Intel and unlock doors, but it also has a function integral to the survival of any field operative: Holo-Cover. This allows players to disguise themselves as NPCs and blend in with the crowd as a civilian. Players can also use it to disguise themselves as staff members and guards to access otherwise restricted areas without drawing suspicion. High-profile actions such as melee attacks, firing your weapon, or getting caught in a place where your disguise doesn’t work will break the camouflage and reveal you as a spy to the guards and any nearby rivals. This mechanic adds a dose of paranoia to the game as you accomplish your mission. Players will constantly watch for anyone acting suspiciously and ensure they don’t look out of place themselves. People familiar with games like The Ship or Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’s multiplayer mode will enjoy this cat-and-mouse gameplay. Aside from your watch and weapon, Deceive Inc. offers a wide range of gadgets for players to unlock and equip for missions. The Spyglass allows agents to hack Intel from a distance remotely, the Tripwire will blow the cover of any rival that crosses it, and the Shield-Brella can provide some much-needed cover in a firefight. And for those who want to test the limits of the phrase “hide in plain sight,” the Holo-Mimic allows players to transform into particular inanimate objects, similar to the popular Prop Hunt game mode from Garry’s Mod. Deceive Inc. Gameplay Review Agents are tasked with stealing an objective from various Bond-esque supervillains across four maps. The gameplay loop is divided into three stages: Insertion, Infiltration, and Extraction. During the Insertion phase, agents must locate and hack three special terminals to unlock the main vault. Players are shown five possible locations for these vault terminals. Guards and two locked doors protect each one. Players gather Intel by hacking various electronic devices throughout the map to unlock doors. Intel is used as a resource to unlock doors and safes and use health and ammo stations. Alternatively, players can look for keycards to open the corresponding doors without paying an Intel cost. Once the three vault terminals are hacked, whether by you or your rivals, the vault doors will open, and the Infiltration phase will commence. In the Infiltration phase, players infiltrate the vault area through one of several potential entry points and make their way to the package. These areas are off-limits to civilians, so be sure to don an appropriate disguise and act accordingly. Agents will then break into the secure room and retrieve the package, a gold briefcase, or lie in wait for someone else to steal the package and take it from them! Regardless of who steals the case, the Extraction phase will commence once it’s been swiped. After stealing the package, the carriers must escape to one of three extraction points, knowing they now have a target on their backs. As the carrier makes a break for it, their location will be periodically pinged to all other players based on a timer and their movement speed. The faster they move, the more frequent the pings. However, the package carrier is granted an ability that reveals other players to them at the cost of consuming Intel. If a player dies during a mission, they are out. They can continue spectating the match or opt to search for a new game. In Team mode, teammates can revive a fallen ally once per mission. But the team will have to go on without them if they go down again. A game ends if someone successfully extracts the package or if one spy (or group of spies) is left standing. Overall Impressions and What’s Next for Deceive Inc. The game features crossplay between , PC, and Xbox One, with relatively short queue times for both Solo and Team modes. Since its launch, the game has gained a small but healthy community of players and attention from several influencers and streamers on YouTube and Twitch. The game's unique mix of stealth and gunplay is fun but may prove challenging for some players for their first few missions. And the limits on respawning could be a downside for those looking for a more casual experience. However, people looking for a multiplayer spy game with high-risk, high-reward gameplay will enjoy Deceive Inc. PS5 Since its release, Sweet Bandits have teased their first catalog update, Misery Empire, to be released later in April. This update will feature a new Heat system that will dissuade players from taking out innocent NPCs by making trigger-happy spies increasingly vulnerable to damage with each NPC eliminated. It will also introduce tweaks to team revive mechanics, rebalancing to vault rooms, changes to character hitboxes, and adding a new agent to Deceive Inc.’s roster.

Deceive Inc. is a New Multiplayer Action Game With a Dash of Subterfuge

Human action recognition has emerged as an active area of research within the deep learning community. The primary objective involves identifying and categorizing human actions in videos by utilizing multiple input streams, such as video and audio data. One particular application of this technology lies in the pornography domain, which poses unique technical challenges that complicate the process of human action recognition. Factors such as lighting variations, occlusions, and substantial differences in camera angles and filming techniques make action recognition difficult. Even when two actions are identical, the diverse camera perspectives can lead to confusion in model predictions. To address these challenges in the pornography domain, we have employed techniques that learn from various input streams, including RGB, Skeleton (Pose), and Audio data. The most effective models in terms of performance and runtime include transformer-based architectures for the RGB stream, PoseC3D for the skeleton stream, and ResNet101 for the audio stream. deep learning The outputs of these models are combined using late fusion, wherein each model's significance in the final scoring scheme differs. An alternative strategy might involve training a model with two input streams simultaneously, such as RGB+skeleton or RGB+audio, and subsequently merging their results. However, this approach is unsuitable due to the data's inherent properties. Audio input streams are only useful for specific actions, while other actions lack distinct audio characteristics. Similarly, the skeleton-based model is only applicable when pose estimation surpasses a certain confidence threshold, which is challenging to attain for some actions. By employing the late fusion technique, detailed in subsequent sections, we attain an impressive 90% accuracy rate for the top two predictions among 20 distinct categories. These categories encompass a diverse range of sexual actions and positions. Models RGB Input Stream The primary and most reliable input stream for the model is the RGB frames. The two most potent architectures in this context are the 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (3D CNNs) and attention-based models. The attention-based models, particularly those utilizing transformer architectures, are currently considered state-of-the-art in the field. Consequently, we employ a transformer-based architecture to achieve optimal performance. Additionally, the model demonstrates rapid inference capabilities, requiring approximately 0.53 seconds to process 7-second video clips. Skeleton Input Stream Initially, the human skeleton is extracted utilizing a human detection and 2D pose estimation model. The extracted skeleton information is subsequently fed into PoseC3D, a 3D Convolutional Neural Network (3D CNN) specifically designed for skeleton-based human action recognition. This model is also considered state-of-the-art in the field. In addition to its performance, the PoseC3D model exhibits efficient inference capabilities, requiring approximately 3 seconds to process 7-second video clips. Owing to the challenging perspectives encountered in numerous actions (e.g. it's not possible to extract reliable poses that will help a model identify a action most of the time), skeleton-based human action recognition is employed selectively, specifically for a subset of actions, which includes sex positions fingering Audio Input Stream For the audio input stream, a ResNet-based architecture derived from the Audiovisual SlowFast model is employed. This approach is applied to a smaller set of actions compared to the skeleton-based method, primarily due to the limited information available from an audio perspective for reliably identifying actions within this specific domain. Dataset The assembled dataset is extensive and heterogeneous, incorporating a wide range of recording types, including point-of-view (POV), professional, amateur, with or without a dedicated camera operator, and varying background environments, individuals, and camera perspectives. The dataset comprises approximately 100 hours of training data spanning 20 distinct categories. However, some category imbalances were observed in the dataset. Efforts to address these imbalances are being considered for future iterations of the dataset. Architecture The illustration above provides an overview of the AI pipeline utilized in our system. Initially, a lightweight NSFW detection model is employed to identify non-NSFW segments of the video, enabling us to bypass the rest of the pipeline for those sections. This approach not only accelerates the overall video inference time but also minimizes false positives. Running the action recognition models on irrelevant footage, such as a house or car, is unnecessary as they are not designed to recognize such content. Following this preliminary step, we deploy a rapid RGB-based action recognition model. Depending on the top two results from this model, we determine whether to execute the RGB-based position recognition model, the audio-based action recognition model, or the skeleton-based action recognition model. If one of the top two predictions from the RGB-action recognition model corresponds to the position category, we proceed with the RGB-position recognition model to accurately identify the specific position. Subsequently, we utilize bounding box and 2D pose models to extract the human skeleton, which is then input into the skeleton-based position recognition model. The results from the RGB-position recognition model and the skeleton-position recognition model are integrated through late fusion. If the audio group is detected within the top two labels, the audio-based action recognition model is executed. Its results are combined with those of the RGB-action recognition model through late fusion. Lastly, we parse the outcomes of the action and position models, generating one or two final predictions. Cybercriminals are using blockchain technology to launch cyberattacks by propagating malware and distributing ransomware on the internet. The Glupteba malware is back in action again and infects devices worldwide by leveraging blockchain technology. What is Glupteba? Glupteba is a blockchain-backed trojan that uses a P2P network. This trojan was initially discovered in 2014. A year ago, announced that it had taken action against the Glupteba botnet, but it appeared to be active again since June 2022 and is ongoing. This malware can infect Windows and IoT devices for the following primary purposes: Google Mine cryptocurrencies (Cryptojacking) Steal sensitive user credentials and cookies Install a rootkit to control the bot, hide malware, and process as an administrator Deploy and execute additional malware Install unwanted software like browser extensions, ad displaying software, etc. This backdoor trojan has already infected many devices worldwide, including the US, India, Brazil, and many more. How was Glupteba discovered? discovered this trojan by scanning the blockchain to detect hidden C2 domains. They expended tremendous effort to see this trojan again, using more than 1,500 Glupteba samples to find the keys associated with the malware causing damage to devices. To understand more about Glupteba infrastructure, the Nozomi team analyzed the passive DNS records to find the domain associated with both Glupteba and the host. Finally, they compared them with TLS certificate sets used by the malware. Nozomi Networks Labs How does Glupteba work? Essentially, Glupteba utilizes the Bitcoin blockchain to distribute its command and control (C2) domains to infected systems of various devices. The Bitcoin blockchain network allows storing of up to 80 bytes of arbitrary data within the signature script using opcode. Cybercriminals take advantage of this new technique to launch attacks by utilizing the storage feature of distributed ledger technology (DLT). It is hard to take down, even for law enforcement officers, network defenders, and the victims because once the transactions are validated in the Bitcoin blockchain network, it forms immutable records and that means there’s no way to erase them. OP_RETURN So, attackers have utilized this blockchain mechanism to distribute C2 domains instead of using destination addresses. Once the botnet operator manages to spread C2 domains, he needs to send a transaction to configure malware that gets automatically reconfigured once C2 is refreshed on the infected devices. The report has also suggested that Glupteba uses AES-GCM encryption to protect data in the BTC transaction. So this is the information about the Glupteba trojan. Activity-Centered Instructional Design Model: An Analysis of Action Mapping by Cathy Moore

THE FLY-HUNT After our list, in the last chapter, of the fare on which the Bembex feed in the larval form, it behoves us to seek the motive that induces these Wasps to adopt a method of victualling so exceptional among the digger-insects. Why, instead of previously storing a sufficient quantity of provisions on which the egg could be laid—which would enable the mother to close the cell immediately afterwards and never to return to it—why, I ask, does she tie herself down for a fortnight to this incessant, toilsome coming and going from the burrow to the fields and from the fields to the burrow, forcing her way each time through the unstable sand, either to go hunting or to bring the larva her latest capture? It is, first and foremost, a question of having fresh victuals for her larva: an all-important question, for the grub absolutely refuses any high or tainted game. Like the grubs of the other Diggers, it wants fresh meat and nothing but fresh meat. We have seen in the case of the Cerceres, the Sphex and the Ammophilæ how the mother solves the problem of preserved food-stuffs, the problem of stocking a cell with the requisite quantity of game for its future occupant and keeping the meat fresh for whole weeks at a time; indeed, it is something more than fresh, for the victims are kept in an almost living state, except that they are incapable of movement, an essential condition if the grub is to feed on them in safety. The miracle is performed by the most cunning methods known to physiology. The poisoned lancet is driven into the nerve-centres once or oftener, according to the structure of the nervous system. Thus operated upon, the victim retains all the attributes of life, short of the power of moving. Let us see if the Bembex make use of this profound science of slaughter. The Flies taken from between the legs of the kidnapper as she enters her burrow present, in most cases, every appearance of death. They are motionless; occasionally we can detect in a few of them some faint convulsions of the tarsi, the last vestiges of a life that is passing away. The same appearance of complete death is usually found in the insects which are not actually killed but paralysed by the adroit dagger-thrust of a Cerceris or a Sphex. The question whether they are alive or dead can therefore be decided only according to the manner in which the victims keep fresh. Placed in little screws of paper or in glass tubes, the Crickets and Grasshoppers of the Sphex, the caterpillars of the Ammophilæ, and the Beetles and Weevils of the Cerceres preserve their flexibility of limb, their freshness of colouring and the normal condition of their intestines for weeks and months. They are not corpses but bodies sunk in a lethargy from which there is no awaking. The Flies of the Bembex behave quite differently. The Eristales, the Syrphi—in short, all those whose livery is at all brightly coloured—soon lose the brilliancy of their attire. The eyes of certain Gad-flies, magnificently gilded, with three purple bands, very quickly grow pale and dim, like the eyes of a dying man. All these Flies, large and small, when placed in little paper bags through which the air circulates freely, dry up in two or three days and become brittle; all, when preserved against evaporation in glass tubes in which the air is stationary, go mouldy and decay. They are dead, therefore, really and truly dead, when the Wasp brings them to her larva. Should some of them still retain a remnant of life, a few days or even hours put an end to their agony. Consequently, for lack of talent in the use of her dagger or for some other reason, the murderess kills her victims outright. In view of this fact, that the prey is quite dead at the moment when it is carried off, who would not admire the logic of the Bembex’ procedure? How methodical and consistent everything is in the actions of the cunning Wasp! As the provisions cannot keep beyond two or three days without going bad, they must not be stored entire in the first stages of an infancy which will last at least a fortnight; and the hunting and distribution must necessarily be done day by day, bit by bit, as the larva grows up. The first ration, the one that receives the egg, will last longer than the others; the budding grub will take several days to eat its flesh. It must therefore be small, otherwise the joint would begin to putrefy before it was all finished. This joint therefore will not be a bulky Gad-fly or a corpulent Bombylius, but rather a tiny Sphærophoria, or something similar, making a dainty meal for the larva which is still so delicate. Later, getting bigger and bigger in time, will come the larger joints of venison. The burrow must be kept shut during the mother’s absence, to save the larva from regrettable intrusions; nevertheless the entrance must be one that can be opened very frequently and hurriedly, without much difficulty, when the Wasp returns laden with her prey and watched by the sharp eyes of daring parasites. These conditions could not be obtained with a compact soil such as that in which the Digger-wasps usually make their abodes: the door, left to itself, would stay open; and so, each time, there would be the long and toilsome job of either blocking up the entrance with earth and gravel or unblocking it, as the case might be. The house therefore must be dug in ground with a very loose surface, in fine dry sand, which will at once yield to the slightest effort on the mother’s part and, as it slides down, will close the door of its own accord, like a curtain which, when you thrust it aside with your hand, lets you pass through and then falls back again. There you have the series of actions as deduced by man’s reason and as practised by the Wasp’s sagacity. Why does the spoiler kill the captured prey instead of simply paralysing it? Is it for want of skill in the use of her sting? Is it because of some difficulty due to the structure of the Flies or to the methods employed in the chase? I must begin by confessing that I have failed in my attempts to place Flies, without killing them, in that state of complete immobility to which it is so easy to reduce a Buprestis, a Weevil or a Scarab by injecting a tiny drop of ammonia with a needle into the thoracic ganglia. In making the experiment, it is difficult to render the insect motionless; and, by the time that it has ceased to move, death has actually occurred, as is proved by its speedy corruption or desiccation. But I have too much confidence in the resources of instinct and have witnessed the ingenious solution of too many problems to believe that a difficulty which baffles the experimenter can bring the insect to a standstill. Therefore, without throwing doubt upon the Bembex’ talents as a slaughterer, I should be inclined to look for other reasons. Perhaps the Fly, so thinly covered, so devoid of any plumpness, in a word, so lean, could not, if paralysed by the sting, resist evaporation long enough and would shrivel up during the two or three weeks of waiting. Consider the puny Sphærophoria, the larva’s first mouthful. How much liquid has that body to satisfy the needs of evaporation? An infinitesimal drop, a mere nothing. The abdomen is a thin strip; its two sides touch. Can such game as this form the basis of preserved food, seeing that evaporation would dry up its juices in a few hours when these are not renewed by nutrition? It is doubtful, to say the least. Let us examine the method of hunting, so as to throw some final light on the subject. In the quarry removed from between the legs of the Bembex, it is not rare to observe signs of a hurried capture, made anyhow, according to the chances of a rough-and-tumble fight. The Fly sometimes has her head turned the wrong way round, as though the spoiler had wrung her neck; her wings are crushed; her fur, when she possesses any, is ruffled. I have seen some that had their bellies ripped open by their assailant’s mandibles and had lost their legs in the battle. As a rule, however, the victim is intact. No matter: considering the nature of the game, endowed with good wings for flying, the capture must take place with a suddenness that makes it hardly possible, I should say, to obtain paralysis unaccompanied by death. A Cerceris face to face with her clumsy Weevil, a Sphex grappling with the fat Cricket or the portly Ephippiger, an Ammophila holding her caterpillar by the skin of its neck, all three have an advantage over a prey which is too slow in its movements to avoid attack. They can take their time, select at their ease the mathematical spot where the sting is to penetrate, and lastly go to work with the precision of an anatomist probing with his scalpel the patient who lies before him on the operating-table. But with the Bembex it is a very different matter: at the least alarm, the game nimbly makes off; and, once on the wing, it can defy its pursuer. The Wasp has to pounce upon her prey unawares, without considering how she shall attack or calculating her blows, just as the Goshawk does when hunting in the fallows. Mandibles, claws, sting, every weapon must be employed simultaneously in the fierce fray so as to put an end as early as possible to a contest in which the least hesitation would give the victim time to escape. If these conjectures are borne out by the facts, the Bembex’ prize can be nothing but a corpse or at most a mortally wounded prey. Well, my conjectures are correct: the Bembex delivers her attack with a dash which would do credit to a bird of prey. To surprise the Wasp hunting is not an easy thing; were we never so well armed with patience, we should watch in vain in the neighbourhood of the burrow: the favourable opportunity would not present itself, for the insect flies far away and there is no possibility of following it in its rapid evolutions. Its tactics would doubtless be unknown to me but for the assistance of a utensil from which I would certainly never have expected such a service. I am speaking of my umbrella, which I used as a protection against the sun in the sand of the Bois des Issarts. I was not the only one to profit by its shade; I was generally surrounded by numerous companions. Gad-flies of various species would take refuge under the silken dome and sit peacefully on every part of the tightly-stretched cover. I was rarely without their society when the heat became overpowering. To while away the hours when I had nothing to do, it amused me to watch their great gold eyes, which shone like carbuncles under my canopy; I loved to follow their solemn progress when some part of the ceiling became too hot and obliged them to move a little way on. One day, bang! The tight cover resounded like the skin of a drum. Perhaps an oak had dropped an acorn on the umbrella. Presently, one after the other, bang, bang, bang! Can some practical joker have come to disturb my solitude and fling acorns or little pebbles at my umbrella? I leave my tent and inspect the neighbourhood: nothing! The same sharp sound is repeated. I look up at the ceiling, and the mystery is explained. The Bembex of the vicinity, who all consume Gad-flies, had discovered the rich provender that was keeping me company and were impudently penetrating my shelter to seize the Flies on the ceiling. Things were going to perfection: I had only to sit still and look. Every moment a Bembex would enter, swift as lightning, and dart up to the silken ceiling, which resounded with a sharp thud. Some rumpus was going on aloft, where the eye could no longer distinguish between attacker and attacked, so lively was the fray. The struggle did not last for an appreciable time: the Wasp would retire forthwith with a victim between her legs. The dull herd of Gad-flies, at this sudden irruption which slaughtered them one after the other, drew back a little all round, without quitting the treacherous shelter. It was so hot outside! Why get excited? Obviously, this suddenness of attack, followed by the swift removal of the prey, does not allow the Bembex to regulate her dagger-play. The sting no doubt performs its office, but it is directed without precision at those spots which the hazards of the fight place within its reach. I have seen Bembex, to finish off their half-killed Gad-flies still struggling in the assassin’s grasp, munch the head and thorax of the victims. This habit in itself proves that the Wasp wants a genuine corpse and not a paralysed prey, since she ends the Fly’s agony with so little ceremony. All things considered, therefore, I think that, on the one hand, the nature of the prey, which dries up so quickly, and, on the other hand, the difficulty of making such rapid attacks, explain why the Bembex serve up dead prey to their larvæ and consequently cater for them from day to day. Let us watch the Wasp as she returns to the burrow with her capture held under her abdomen between her legs. Here comes one, the Tarsal Bembex (B. tarsata), who arrives laden with a Bee-fly. The nest is situated at the sandy foot of a steep bank. The huntress announces her approach by a shrill humming, which has something plaintive about it and which continues until the insect sets foot to earth. We see the Bembex hover above the bank and then dip straight down, very slowly and cautiously, all the time emitting her shrill hum. Should her keen eye descry anything unusual, she slackens her descent, hovers for a second or two, goes up again, comes down again and flies away, swift as an arrow. After a few moments, here she is once more. Hovering at a certain height, she appears to be inspecting the locality, as if from the top of an observatory. The vertical descent is resumed with the most cautious slowness; finally, the Wasp alights with no hesitation whatever at a spot which to my eye has naught to distinguish it from the rest of the sandy surface. At that instant the plaintive whimper ceases. The insect, no doubt, has landed more or less on chance, since the most practised eye cannot distinguish one spot from the other on that expanse of sand; it has alighted somewhere near its home, of which it will now seek the entrance, concealed after its last exit not only by the natural falling-in of the materials but also by the Wasp’s own careful sweeping. But no: the Bembex does not hesitate at all, does not grope about, does not seek. By common consent the antennæ are looked upon as organs for guiding insects in their searches. At this moment of the return to the nest, I see nothing particular in the play of the antennæ. Without once letting go her prey, the Bembex scratches a little in front of her, at the very spot where she has alighted, gives a push with her head and straightway enters, with the Fly under her abdomen. The sand falls in, the door closes and the Wasp is at home. It makes no difference that I have seen the Bembex return to her nest hundreds of times; it is always with fresh astonishment that I behold the keen-sighted insect find without hesitation a door whose presence there is nothing to indicate. This door, in fact, is hidden with jealous care, not now, after the Bembex has gone in—for the obliterating sand does not become quite level of its own weight, but leaves perhaps a slight depression, or an incompletely blocked porch—but certainly after she comes out, for, when starting on an expedition, she never fails to put a finishing touch to the result of the natural landslip. Wait for her departure and you shall see her, before flying off, sweep the front of the door and level it with scrupulous care. When she is gone, I defy the most penetrating eye to find the entrance. To discover it again, when the sandy expanse was of any size, I had to resort to a kind of triangulation; and how often, after a few hours’ absence, did not my combinations of triangles and my efforts of memory prove to be at fault! All that remained was the stake, a grass-stalk planted on the threshold; and even this method was not always effective, for the insect, with its passion for continually improving the outside of the nest, often made the bit of straw disappear from sight. THE ONTHOPHAGI After the notabilities of the Dung-beetle tribe, there remain, in the very limited radius of my research, the small fry of the Onthophagi, of whom I could gather a dozen different species around my house. What will these little ones teach us? Even more zealous than their larger comrades, they are the first to hasten to the exploiting of the heap left by the passing mule. They come up in crowds and stay long, working under the spread table that gives them shade and coolness. Turn over the heap with your foot. You will be surprised at the swarming population whose presence no outward sign betrayed. The largest are scarce the size of a pea, but many are much smaller still, are dwarfs, no less busy than the others, no less eager to crumble the filth whose prompt disappearance the public health demands. In works of major interest, there is none like the humble, with their concerted weakness, for realizing immense strength. Swollen by numbers, the next to nothing becomes an enormous total. Hurrying in detachments at the first news of the event, assisted moreover in their wholesome task by their partners, the Aphodians, who are as weak as they, the tiny Onthophagi soon clear the ground of its dirt. Not that [ ]their appetite is equal to the consumption of such plentiful provisions. What food do those pigmies need? An atom. But that atom, selected from among the exudations, must be hunted amid the fragments of the masticated fodder. Hence, an endless division and subdivision of the lump, reducing it to crumbs which the sun sterilizes and the wind dispels. As soon as the work is done—and very well done—the troop of scavengers goes in search of another refuse-yard. Outside the period of intense cold, which puts a stop to all activity, they know no dead season. 80 And do not run away with the idea that this filthy task entails an inelegant shape and a ragged dress. The insect knows none of our squalor. In its world, a navvy dons a sumptuous jerkin; an undertaker decks himself in a triple saffron sash; a wood-cutter works in a velvet coat. In like manner, the Onthophagus has his own luxury. True, the costume is always severe: brown and black are the predominant colours, now dull, now polished as ebony; but, on this background, what details of sober and graceful ornament! The graver’s work completes the beauty of the dress. Tiny chasings in parallel grooves, gnarly beads, dainty rows of knobs, seed-plots of pearly papillæ are distributed in profusion among nearly all of them. Yes, the little Onthophagi, with their stunted bodies and their nimble activity, are really pretty to look at. And then how original are their frontal decorations! These peace-lovers delight in the panoply of war, as though they, the inoffensive ones, thirsted for battle. Many of them crown their heads with threatening horns. Let us mention that horned one whose story will occupy us more particularly. I mean Onthophagus [ ]Taurus, clad in raven black. He wears a pair of long horns, gracefully curved and branching to either side. No pedigree bull, in the Swiss meadows, can match them for curve or elegance. 81 The Onthophagus is a very indifferent artist: his nest is a rudimentary piece of work, hardly fit to be acknowledged. I obtain it in profusion from the six species which I have brought up in my jars and flower-pots. Onthophagus Taurus alone provides me with nearly a hundred; and I find no two precisely alike, as pieces should be that come from the same mould and the same laboratory. To this lack of exact similarity, we must add inaccuracy of shape, now more, now less accentuated. It is easy, however, to recognize among the bulk the prototype from which the clumsy nest-builder works. It is a sack shaped like a thimble and standing erect, with the spherical thimble-end at the bottom and the circular opening at the top. Sometimes, the insect establishes itself in the central region of my apparatus, in the heart of the earthy mass; then, the resistance being the same in every direction, the sack-like shape is pretty accurate. But, generally, the Onthophagus prefers a solid basis to a dusty support and builds against the walls of the jar, especially against the bottom wall. When the support is vertical, the sack is a short cylinder divided lengthwise, with a smooth, flat surface against the glass and a rugged convexity every elsewhere. If the support be horizontal, as is most frequently the case, the cabin is a sort of undefined oval pastille, flat at the bottom, bulging and vaulted at the top. To the general inaccuracy of these contorted shapes, ruled by no very definite pattern, we must add the coarseness of the surfaces, all of which, with the [ ]exception of the parts touching the glass, are covered with a crust of sand. 82 The manner of procedure explains this uncouth exterior. As laying-time draws nigh, the Onthophagus bores a cylindrical pit and descends underground to a middling depth. Here, working with the shield, the chine and the fore-legs, which are toothed like a rake, he forces back and heaps around him the materials which he has moved, so as to obtain as best he may a nest of suitable size. The next thing is to cement the crumbling walls of the cavity. The insect climbs back to the surface by way of its pit; it gathers on its threshold an armful of mortar taken from the cake whereunder it has elected to set up house; it goes down again with its burden, which it spreads and presses upon the sandy wall. Thus it produces a concrete casing, the flint of which is supplied by the wall itself and the cement by the produce of the sheep. After a few trips and repeated strokes of the trowel, the pit is plastered on every side; the walls, encrusted with grains of sand, are no longer liable to give way. The cabin is ready: it now wants only a tenant and stores. First, a large free space is contrived at the bottom: the hatching-chamber, on whose inner wall the egg is laid. Next comes the gathering of the provisions intended for the worm, a gathering made with nice precautions. Lately, when building, the insect worked upon the outside of the doughy mass and took no notice of the earthy blemishes. Now, it penetrates to the very centre of the lump, through a gallery that looks as though it were contrived with a punch. When trying a cheese, the buyer employs a hollow cylindrical taster, which he [ ]drives well in and pulls out with a sample taken from the middle of the cheese. The Onthophagus, when collecting for her grub, goes to work as though equipped with one of these tasters. She bores an exactly round hole into the piece which she is exploiting; she goes straight to the middle, where the material, not being exposed to the contact of the air, has kept more savoury and pliable. Here and here alone are gathered the armfuls which, gradually stowed away, kneaded and heaped up to the requisite extent, fill the sack to the top. Finally, a plug of the same mortar, the sides of which are made partly of sand and partly of stercoral cement, roughly closes the cell, in such a way that an outward inspection does not allow one to distinguish front from back. 83 To judge the work and its merit, we must open it. A large empty space, oval in shape, occupies the rear end. This is the birth-chamber, huge in dimensions compared with its content, the egg fixed on the wall, sometimes at the bottom of the cell and sometimes on the side. The egg is a tiny white cylinder, rounded at either end and measuring a millimetre in length immediately after it is laid. With no other support than the spot on which the oviduct has planted it, it stands on its hind-end and projects into space. 1 A more or less enquiring glance is quite surprised to find so small a germ contained in so large a box. What does that tiny egg want with all that space? When carefully examined within, the walls of the chamber prompt another question. They are coated with a fine greenish pap, semi-fluid and shiny, the appearance of which does not agree with the outward or inward aspect of the lump from which the insect has extracted its [ ]materials. A similar lime-wash is observed in the nest which the Sacred Beetle, the Copris, the Sisyphus, the Geotrupe and other makers of stercoraceous preserves contrive in the very heart of the provisions, to receive the egg; but nowhere have I seen it so plentiful, in proportion, as in the hatching-chamber of the Onthophagus. Long puzzled by this brothy wash, of which the Sacred Beetle provided me with the first instance, I began by taking the thing for a layer of moisture oozing from the bulk of the victuals and collecting on the surface of the enclosure without other effort than capillary action. That was the interpretation which I accepted originally. 84 I was wrong. The truth is worthy of attention in a very different way. To-day, better-informed by the Onthophagus, I know that this lime-wash itself, this semi-fluid cream, is the product of maternal foresight. What, then, is this lime-wash found in every cell? The answer is compulsory: it is a produce of the mother, a special gruel, a milk-food elaborated for the benefit of the new-born grub. The young Pigeon puts his beak into that of his parents, who, with convulsive efforts, force down his gullet first a caseous mash secreted in the crop and next a broth of grains softened by being partially digested. He is fed upon disgorged foods, which are helpful to the weaknesses of an inexperienced stomach. The grub of the Onthophagus is brought up in much the same way, at the start. To assist its first attempts at swallowing, the mother prepares for it, in her crop, a light and strengthening cream. To pass the dainty from mouth to mouth is, in her case, impossible: the construction of other cells keeps her busy elsewhere. Moreover—and this is a more serious detail—the laying takes place egg by egg, at very long [ ]intervals, and the hatching is pretty slow: time would fail, had the family to be brought up in the manner of the Pigeons. Another method is perforce needed. The childish pap is disgorged all over the walls of the cabin in such a way that the nursling finds itself surrounded by an abundance of bread-and-jam, in which the bread, the food of the sturdy age, is represented by the uncooked material, as supplied by the sheep, whereas the jam, the mess of the puny age, is represented by the same material daintily prepared beforehand in the mother’s stomach. We shall see the babe presently lick first the jam, all around it, and then stoutly attack the bread. A child among ourselves would behave no otherwise. 85 I should have liked to catch the mother in the act of disgorging and spreading her broth. I was not able to succeed. Things happen in a narrow retreat, which the eye cannot enter when the pastry-cook is busy; and also her fluster at being exhibited in broad daylight at once stops the work. If direct observation be lacking, at least the appearance of the material speaks very clearly and tells us that the Onthophagus, here rivalling the Pigeon, but with a different method, disgorges the first mouthfuls for her sons. And the same may be said of the other Dung-beetles skilled in the art of building a hatching-chamber in the centre of the provisions. No elsewhere, in the insect order, except among the Apidæ, who prepare disgorged food in the shape of honey, is this affection present. The Dung-workers edify us with their morals. Several of them practise association in couples and found a household; several anticipate the suckling, the supreme expression of maternal solicitude, by turning their crop into a nipple. Life has its freaks. [ ]It settles amid ordure the creatures most highly-endowed with family qualities. True, from there it mounts, with a sudden flight, to the sublimities of the bird. 86 The little worm is hatched in about a week: a strange and paradoxical being. On its back, it has an enormous sugar-loaf hump, the weight of which drags it over and capsizes it each time it tries to stand on its legs and walk. At every moment, it staggers and falls under the burden of the hunch. Unable to keep its hump upright, the grub of the Onthophagus lies down on its side and licks the cream of its cell all around it. There is cream everywhere, on the ceiling, on the walls, on the floor. As soon as one spot is thoroughly bared, the consumer moves on a little with the help of its well-shaped legs; it capsizes again and starts licking again. The room is large and plentifully supplied; and the jam-diet lasts some time. The fat babies of the Geotrupe, the Copris and the Sacred Beetle finish at one brief sitting the dainty wherewith their cabined lodge is hung, a dainty scantily served and just sufficient to stimulate the appetite and prepare the stomach for a coarser fare; but the Onthophagus grub, that lean pigmy, has enough to last it for a week and more. The spacious natal chamber, which is out of all proportion with the size of the nursling, has permitted this wastefulness. At last, the real loaf is attacked. In about a month, everything is consumed, except the wall of the sack. And now the splendid part played by the hump stands revealed. Glass tubes, prepared in view of events, allow me to follow the more and more plump and hunch-backed grub at work. I see it withdraw to one end of the cell, which has become a crumbling ruin. Here it builds a [ ]casket in which the transformation will take place. Its materials are the digestive residuum, converted into mortar and heaped up in the hump. The stercoral architect is about to construct a masterpiece of elegance out of its own ordure, held in reserve in that receptacle. 87 I follow its movements under the magnifying-glass. It buckles itself, closes the circuit of the digestive apparatus, brings the two poles into contact and, with the end of its mandibles, seizes a pellet of dung ejaculated at that moment. This pellet, moulded and measured to perfection, is very neatly gathered. A slight bend of the neck sets the rubble-stone in place. Others follow, laid one above the other in minutely regular courses. Giving a tap here and there with its feelers, the grub makes sure of the stability of the parts, their accurate binding, their orderly arrangement. It turns round in the centre of the work as the edifice rises, even as a mason does when building a tower. Sometimes, the laid stone becomes loose, because the cement has given way. The worm takes it up again with its mandibles, but, before replacing it, coats it with an adhesive moisture. It holds it to its anus, whence trickles, on the moment, almost imperceptibly, a gummy consolidating extract. The hump supplies the materials; the intestines give, if necessary, the connecting glue. In this way, a nice house is produced, ovoid in shape, polished as stucco within and adorned on the outside with slightly projecting scales, similar to those on a cedar-cone. Each of these scales is one of the rubble-stones out of the hump. The casket is not large: a cherry-stone would about represent its dimensions; but it is so accurate, so prettily fashioned that it will bear comparison with the finest products of entomological industry.
