I've been working as a single-person marketing department for the past two years with a primary focus on content hacking for the generation of marketing qualified leads (MQLs) and brand awareness. It's needless to say that I wouldn't be able to punch above my own weight and be effective without using freelancers, interns, and online tools that help automate and facilitate inbound marketing efforts and reach crucial KPIs. While nothing compares to collaborating with real humans on content creation and design, we, hands-on marketers, can rarely afford to work with the best of the best (merely due to budget restrictions and tight deadlines). Thus, we have to rely on many average (read ) freelancers who miss deadlines, become irresponsive and can screw you up when you expect it the least. mediocre Having gained negative firsthand experience with many freelancers and part-time associates, I turned to online tools to save money and time and avoid/minimize the stress of working with "pricks". Based on my own experience, I've put together a list of apps that prove to be highly efficient and cost-effective for hands-on marketing leaders. These tools have both free and paid versions and offer free trials so it's up to you to decide which subscription level to go with depending on your budget and overall inbound marketing expectations. Content creation tools 1. Canva Canva is a must-have tool for all marketers with limited or zero graphic and web design skills. It allows for creating truly awesome designs of multi-genre content, including interactive presentations, video, slideshows, online brochures and leaflets, posters, banners, etc. Using the tool is a no-brainer: it's loaded with a lot of free and paid pre-built templates which are easy to customize and brand. It literally takes a few minutes to create a research-based video presentation and other types of highly engaging social media content. Also, with Canva, it's a breeze to update backgrounds of your social media profiles, as it has many pre-built templates adjusted by size and tailored to different social media channels' standards. If you want to deliver "sexy" brand content – Canva is your must-have tool, with no exaggeration! 2. Magisto This is a mobile app (iOS and Android) that helps create cool video content from your existing brand imagery and video footage. If you want to make a fun or inspirational video featuring a trendy soundtrack and a myriad of visual effects, you should give Magisto a try! You can create beautiful video stories from your corporate parties, events, or business workshops and share them instantly with your brand followers and partners. Their $4,99/mo plan is more than enough to beautify your video content and make it stand out. 3. Flourish Flourish is a must-have tool for all marketers who need to visualize their own or third-party data (e.g. research data, small data, or big data) interactively without involving a programmer or a designer. All you need to do is load your data spreadsheet into the application and wait for the magic to happen. Once done, you can embed the charts into your blog or social media posts, and your readers will be able to easily slice and dice the data by clicking on particular chart elements. Content proofreading and anti-plagiarism I don't actually have a list of tools for this category as I'm an aficionado of just one application – ! For me, it's a one-stop-shop for content proofreading, plagiarism detection and...writing motivation. Grammarly As a hands-on marketer, I'm not really used to working with large budgets (as you can imagine) so I rely pretty heavily on content hacking techniques. As a bilingual person (I speak native Ukrainian and Russian), I leverage a lot of curated and translated content for the creation of unique brand content in English. As such, I need to make sure that whatever I translate and compile from non-English sources reads and sounds as close to native English as possible. Grammarly helps me a great deal in finding my own voice in writing, i.e. style, tone, and authenticity. Each time I write up a blog myself or get an article submission from a freelancer, I copy the text and paste it into Grammarly to set content goals (e.g., target audience, formality, domain, tone) and check the following: correctness, clarity, engagement, delivery, uniqueness (no plagiarism). What I also love about Grammarly is that this brand encourages us to write more and better via an inspirational newsletter that praises you for progress compared to all other Grammarly users (see screenshot below). Believe me, when I see that I'm more accurate than 98% of Grammarly users (even if it's not true and is just a marketing gimmick), I feel encouraged enough to keep using the tool going forward! So, it's a great way to address customer loyalty that other brands need to consider. Guest Blogging 1. Authority Builders Built by a famous SEO expert Matt Diggity ( ), AB lets you guest-post in top-tier and fringe media and can find you a blog that will accept your link depending on your budget. The only thing I don't like about them is that you have to make a blind purchase, i.e., you don't know what media your guest post will be published on unless you're using their premium publication services which are pretty expensive. @mattdiggityseo So you're basically buying a pig in a poke: you can only choose blogs by category, domain authority ranks, and price. There's no geo-based filter either, so brace yourself that your guest post can be published on one of those mediocre Indian resources with artificially boosted domain ranks. However, if you're creating a link building machine and aiming for Tier2 links/link pyramids, you should explore this service, as it can be very effective for your SEO campaigns. However, note that you should have a guest posting budget of at least $1,000 to benefit from this service and yield appropriate results. 2. OutreachMama OutreachMama is my most favorite guest posting tool so far. Unlike Authority Builders which is completely automated, OutreachMama provides you with a dedicated account manager who communicates with you as long as your project is in progress, from an initial request through to the final publication in the selected media. Also, unlike Authority Builders, OutreachMama lets you choose the exact publication you want your guest post to appear AND review an article they create on your behalf (this is a luxury other blogger outreach solutions don't offer!). Furthermore, you can even suggest article improvements and the OutreachMama team will make all respective changes to the article. Their service quality is exceptional. Costs for placing an article in media resources with high-authority domains start at $175. SEO & Link Building 1. Ahrefs Ahrefs is by far the most popular and commonly used SEO tracking tool out there. It does the job of backlinks tracking much better than SEMRush, but I generally find their dashboard less user-friendly. You can try it for seven days for $7. I recommend using Ahrefs and SEMRush together for identification and validation of trends and issues. In this case, you always have the "second opinion" about your SEM results. 2. SEMrush An alternative to renowned Ahrefs, SEMRush offers a $120/mo package that is great for competitive research, positions tracking, and on- and off-page optimisation strategy. However, their backlinks profile tracking sucks, as the data they show is always several days behind the actual stats. 3. diib Diib uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyze website performance and keywords tracking and provide very clear and descriptive instructions as to what needs to be done to fix issues and improve SEO rankings. Their free option offers limited growth plans and website performance tracking; you can access their PRO features for $19,99-29,00/mo depending on your current traffic. 4. Buzzsumo This app is pretty good for backlinks tracking and influencer outreach, too. They have a clear and intuitive interface and offer a free trial for 7 days. Their PRO solutions start at $99/mon. I use Buzzsumo in combination with SEMRush and Ahrefs for better tracking of backlinks and content performance evaluation. 5. SEOclerks SEOclerks is an all-embracing gig portal where you can find white- and gray-hat SEO freelancers, blogger outreach specialists, backlink builders and at very affordable rates. The site is great to build and boost a backlink profile, get drip feed links, and more. hustlers 6. SERP Empire It's an AI bot that provides automated (bot-generated) traffic that clicks on your landing pages on the Google SERP to increase your rankings. It's pretty useless if you rely on it alone for your traffic boost, but it proves to be very effective when used together with traditional organic traffic boosters. How to Become a Content Hacker: Top Tools for Hands-On Marketers

What should and shouldn’t we expect from AI companies and how do we avoid building another tech bubble? Last week I was watching which depicts the events leading up to the global financial crisis from the perspective of a few people who realised the bubble was about to burst. The Big Short (sidenote — a brilliant movie!) What was interesting to me was that much of the financial instruments that ultimately led to the downfall of the system weren’t actually created as evil. But by cutting corners and people without the knowledge or incentive to do their homework eventually they ended up ticking time bombs. It’s a compound effect where small choices in the moment don’t seem significant but over time exponentially grow to become a massive capital (or debt). Stock market bubbles don’t grow out of thin air. They have a solid basis in reality, but reality as distorted by a misconception. George Soros I also realised that our startup is in an increasingly hot space, that of Artificial Intelligence. Now this isn’t a bad thing per-se. It means investors, competitors and potential partners take us seriously which opens up capital and opportunities that might otherwise have not. It means it’s relatively easy for us to gain media coverage or SEO traffic. Lead Wizards But there’s a flip-side…as the discussion around AI becomes more mainstream we’re going to see a lot of unfounded, incomplete or wrong “facts” on the matter. So in this post I wanted to address some of the misconceptions I’ve come across and show what “AI” really means and to make sure that we’re not over-inflating the promise of AI companies based on wrong ideas of what it can and can’t do. In the next post on this subject I want to give a honest look behind the scenes of a lot of AI companies (including ours) and how their “fake it till you make it” culture helps AI startups thrive in the long run. But let’s start with a few AI misconceptions. You say AI but you mean… First of all, let’s stop using the term AI for everything! The “Hollywood” AI or Artificial Intelligence is a true super-human brain running on silicon. A brain that can think, reason, dream and most importantly improve itself. And using this term often paints the wrong picture. Because most of the “AI” that we see around us today is actually . Mathematical expressions operating on data to obtain “statistical” insights…nothing spooky! Machine Learning Even advanced systems like the which won Jeopardy aren’t really AI. If we look on the IBM website we see the following description of what they actually do: IBM Watson machine “IBM Watson is a technology platform that uses natural language processing and machine learning to reveal insights from large amounts of unstructured data” In other words, they are a set of algorithms whose parameters have been trained to give structured data (so think detecting years, names and nouns and putting them in a database and linking these concepts together) from a chunk of unstructured text. Now it is true that in some Machine Learning fields such as neural networks do draw a lot of inspiration from how the brain actually works. But calling that AI would be the same as calling an airplane a bird. Yes the airplane has been optimised to be great at flight and transporting load and is in fact better than a bird. Yet if we ask it to survive on it’s own it would fail miserably (in fact it wouldn’t even register the request :P ) What’s important to note here though is that if there is a symbiosis between man and machine great things can be achieved! By leveraging the scalable, continuous and emotionless qualities of our machine friends and combining them with our emotions, imagination and versatility. Now we are moving towards true AI at a rapid pace! Wether that’s a good or bad thing is another discussion entirely but the fact that Elon Musk has set foot in the should give some indication as too the big changes ahead of us. But remember; not yet! Just because somebody runs an “AI” company doesn’t mean they’re going to destroy the world. Nor does it mean that they can help you turn lead into gold, which brings me to my next misconception… AI research field There’s an AI for that! Now another misconception I heard is something along the lines of “We’ve been saving data for years and have now used this great machine learning algorithm on our big data and we have concluded that <fill in mumbojumbo here>”. There’s two things wrong with this sentence. First of all it’s the notion that just because you have a lot of data there is useful data. You might have been collection the wrong data, biased data or highly random data. Without an understanding of what the data contains, how it was obtained and some digging for a useful signal it’s easy to use the wrong algorithms and draw faulty conclusions. The second error is the belief that there’s just this simple algorithm or AI system you can use. I think that especially with the rise of “bubble AI startups” this argument is going to be heard more and more. Yes there are great toolkits and algorithms out there but they need to be combined with performance benchmarks and AB split testing (cross validation in ML terms) and a good understanding of the pro’s en con’s and application areas to actually deliver value. And they’re not just algorithms you run once, rather you keep optimising and improving as new data comes in. That’s why it’s critical that alongside your “data” you also build a validation loop. I’ll elaborate on this point more in the next post but it’s very similar to how you validate your Core Metric as described in this article by Hampus Jakobsson Last but not least, misconception number 3… We’re an AI company Again I think this is something we’re going to hear more an more. If investors (or worse founders) lack understanding of how they use Machine Learning to actually deliver value they will start to simplify and generalise to a point where every AI company is thrown on a big heap. Now the problem of-course is that most AI companies aren’t actually all that alike. Some might focus on Natural Language Processing, others focus on data clustering. There’s also a big difference in how these companies deliver value and how they can be monetised and grow. on different types of Machine Learning companies and as the space develops we should be starting to see more stereotypes, not less! Even if you’re not technical there’s great books ( ) to help you at least understand enough to have a feel for when things are off (or right ofcourse!). Let’s not build an AI bubble!

Imagine you are a product manager building a digital product where users can interact with each other and post their own content. It can be anything, a dating app, online store, messenger or even a fitness app with social mechanics. What can potentially go wrong? Well, many things. For example: Catfishing, Scams, Unsolicited Images, Harassment, Abuse, Stalking, Data Leaks, Impersonation, Spam, and much more. How will you make sure that your users have a safe and secure experience while using your product? And why product managers should care? Importance of Privacy and Security Features Threats can happen on every step of the user’s journey, including registration, login, and both in-product and real-life experiences, which we will review in this article. However, before we dive into examples of privacy and security features, let's talk about three main reasons why it is important to consider them from the beginning of the development of your new product or feature. [01] Regulatory requirements The first reason why you need to care about privacy and security features is regulatory requirements. Each market has its own set of regulations, so you need to review what applies to your markets. To put things into perspective, since GDPR came into effect in 2018, digital companies have been fined over 4 billion euros. [02] Competitive advantage The second reason, is that you can use privacy and security features for your product’ competitive advantage. People becoming more aware of the potential risks associated with using digital products. As a result, companies that prioritise these features can gain a competitive advantage and attract more users and customers to their product. According to the 2022 McKinsey research on Digital Trust, 87% of respondents consider ethical and trusted reputation, as well as the amount of collected personal data, to be nearly as important as common purchase decision factors, such as cost (94%) and convenience (92%). This is why it is very important to ensure you have a great relationships with your existing users. In the same 2022 McKinsey research on Digital Trust 40% of respondents stopped buying from a company either because they disagreed with its ethical principles or because they learned of a data breach. By proactively preventing abuse and harassment and protecting users’ personal information you not only create a safer environment but also help to build trust and loyalty to your product which results in higher user retention and stickiness. Each step of the user journey is an opportunity for your product to build trust with your users through demonstration of benevolence, integrity, and ability (the main fundamentals of trust). How to Prioritise What to Build First There are many different privacy and security features that can be added to digital products to build trust and loyalty with users. In this article, we will review some examples from successful products. However, before we will dive into it, let’s discuss how can you prioritise what to build first. Here is my 3 steps framework which can help you to prepare your privacy and security roadmap, when working on a new product or a feature: Consider how your product of feature can be misused Does the feature consider social interactions (meeting, selling, buying etc)? Will users be able to upload UGC (user generated content)? Measure the associated risk What’s the rollout plan and how many users will be exposed to this feature? What media titles could arise about your products if this feature is misused? Decide whether you want to be proactive or reactive in mitigating this risk If proactive – include privacy and security features into the roadmap, think about if you can use them into your Go-To-Market campaign If reactive – ensure that monitoring of the risk is in place. Privacy and Security Features Throughout a User’s Journey In this section, we will review the privacy and security features that successful products use to build trust and loyalty with their users throughout the user's journey. Note: Based on the product nature various methods to ensure user privacy and security can be used. In this article, I will focus primarily on user-facing features that can help build trust between your product and its users. The list of features is not exhaustive and used as an example. Registration and Onboarding The registration and onboarding processes are the first touch points with your product. This is a chance to start building trust by sharing your product guidelines, being transparent about your data privacy policy, and providing users with security tips such as password policies and common scams to be aware of. By implementing password policies, app developers are demonstrating their commitment to protecting their users' personal information and keeping it out of the hands of cybercriminals. The best products not only implement such policies, but also make them easy for users to understand and incorporate. Password policies. A code of conduct is a powerful tool to build trust with users. It outlines your values and principles, and demonstrates your commitment to fairness, respect, and ethical behaviour when interacting with your company. Code of Conduct. Although privacy policies can be lengthy and dense, breaking them down into easily digestible sections can highlight the most important aspects to your users. This can build trust by demonstrating benevolence. Privacy Information. Offering guidance and educational materials during the registration process to inform users about best practices, online safety tips, and potential risks. This helps promote responsible and safe usage of the app. User Education. Login During the login process, it is crucial to ensure that users accounts are well-protected. Communicating the measures taken to protect user accounts can increase their confidence in the security of the product and generate greater trust leading to increased customer loyalty. 2FA adds an additional verification step, such as a unique code sent via SMS or generated by an authentication app, to log in to the app. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). To prevent unauthorised access, some products automatically lock out user accounts after a certain number of failed login attempts. Account Lockouts . Apps can also have a device recognition technology to identify and flag unrecognised devices during login attempts. Users may be prompted for additional verification or receive notifications to verify the legitimacy of the login. Device Recognition. Some apps keep a log of user login activity and display it to users. This enables users to review their recent logins, identify any suspicious activity, and take appropriate action if needed. Login Activity Monitoring. If the app has a login flow, it must have a secure account recovery process, allowing users to regain access to their accounts in case of forgotten passwords or compromised accounts. Sometimes it can involve identity verification and additional security measures. Account Recovery Flow. Some apps implement session timeouts to automatically log users out after a period of inactivity, reducing the risk of unauthorised access if a user leaves their device unattended. Session Management. In-product Experience Once users register and log in, they start using your product. This is a great opportunity to build trust by showing support and proactively mitigating any risks that may arise. Some apps encourage (or sometimes require) users to undergo additional verification steps, such as identity verification or linking social media accounts, to increase trust between users. User Verification. These tools are added to report, review, and monitor user-generated content within the product and other users. This helps prevent the display of inappropriate, offensive or harmful content and ensures a positive user experience. Content and User Reporting. For example, the ability to block, report, or mute other users to avoid unwanted interactions or features to hide inappropriate content. Self-protection tools. Ability to customise privacy settings, including who can see their content or contact them, to maintain control over users’ personal information and interactions. Privacy Controls. To ensure safe communication (messaging, calls) apps add end-to-end encryption, anti-spam filters, and mechanisms to prevent the sharing of personal information or malicious links. . Safe Communication Some apps provide in-app educational materials, safety tips, and resources to promote awareness of common scams, privacy settings, and best practices for online safety. User Education and Safety Resources. In-Real-Life Experience Developing an app with social mechanics requires considering potential real-life interactions and the associated risks. While such interactions may not be the app's direct responsibility, any negative outcomes could harm the company's reputation. Educating users about safety measures and providing tools for risk mitigation demonstrates benevolence and builds trust. Some apps have a system where users can leave reviews and ratings for others based on their real-life interactions. This helps establish trust and provides transparency about other users' experiences. User Reviews and Ratings. Provide users with guidelines on safe practices for meeting in person. This may include suggestions such as meeting in public places, informing a trusted friend or family member about the meeting, and exercising caution when sharing personal information. Safe Meeting Guidelines. Enable users to report any safety concerns or incidents that occur during real-life meetings. Reporting and Emergency Assistance.

Digital Compositing Paradigm in a Pipeline The paradigm of node-based digital compositing where we can lay out steps in a progression and make modifications to an earlier step to change the outcome is completely kept. Each node can be easily reused by referencing it with a node number as in Step 7, and if required, used further in a later step, saving time and effort. In the same way that a digital compositing node graph is broken into a series of nodes in a graph, a Pipeline breaks it into a series of actions or steps. A Pipeline, from another angle, is thus like a single-column spreadsheet, a metaphor that many computer users are quite familiar with. Viewing the output of each step: Viewer Cycling The arrangement in a series of steps enables the output of each progression step to be viewed easily, for example, by long pressing on a node on the Pipeline. This enables an artist to step through the progression to reinforce his or her cognitive working memory of what has been performed. Recently I’ve been working on understanding more Javascript fundamentals and I took a look at hoisting. I thought that it was a pretty cool concept, so have written a blog post explaining it. What is hoisting? Hoisting is a process in the Javascript engine which does a pass through your code and allocates memory based on the presence of certain things. Hoisting is a way for us to understand how this works. In the , there are two stages, the creation stage, and the execution stage. The former provides the Global Object (e.g. ‘Window’ in the browser), the this keyword, and hoisting. The latter is when we run our code. Global Execution Context When the Javascript engine does its pass through your code, it looks for function declarations (but not arrow functions, or function expressions), and variables (excluding let or const). These are then ‘hoisted’ which allocates them space in memory. Partial Hoisting First up is partial hoisting. This applies to variables only. Functions are handled differently. There’s a problem here though - we haven’t defined it yet. So really we should get a Reference Error right? Where is undefined coming from? Well, when the Javascript engine passes through the code above, it sees that we have a var and realises that a variable is going to be defined. It doesn’t care what the variable is, but it knows that some memory is going to be needed, so it allocates some in the heap so that it’s ready when we need it. This is why you then get ‘undefined’ in the example above. You’ve probably seen this when coding before right? Well it’s just Javascript’s placeholder. It won’t break the script, but it knows that something will be allocated to our favouriteDrink variable. Great, so how about a trickier example? let b = 'Bar'; Neither const not let get hoisted. Full Hoisting Function declarations (but not expressions, or arrow functions) are fully hoisted. This means that the function is allocated space in the memory heap, but instead of simply creating a placeholder like we saw in the previous section, the contents of that function are stored in memory. That’s generally an easy (albeit simplistic) way to visualise hoisting. Instead, the memory is assigned into the memory heap. Well, hoisting happens on every execution context. Any time you run a function in Javascript, a new execution context is created and we have to go through the creation and execution stages in the Global Execution Context again. So when we call favouriteSport() we create a new execution context and hoisting happens. So in our first console.log we have undefined because the Javascript engine has created our placeholder. So in the execution stage, we call our function and a new execution context is created. Inside of the execution context, we only have access to the variable inside the function. The variable is hoisted and becomes undefined until we provide a value to it, in this case - ‘running’. Then when we call console.log again, we have a value assigned to our variable and we get our correct output. Make sense? Conclusion So that is a very quick introduction to hoisting. Hopefully you found this easy to follow and now understand the concept better. It’s actually pretty simple. Is hoisting a good thing though? Well, that depends. It’s certainly quite a confusing topic, particularly for beginners and can make code less readable. On the other hand, it’s a quirky feature of Javascript which allows for flexibility in how your code is written. Personally I would avoid hoisting where I can in favour of more readable code. I tend to use const and let over var anyway and this stops me from (ab)using hoisting by default. I find that if you trigger a Reference Error then you need to look at your code structure and not rely on the internals of Javascript to hopefully figure it out for you. To give voice to your lyrics, I used another free tool, Uberduck. In Uberduck, under “choose a voice” I selected ‘rappers’ and ‘Drake’ and proceeded to synthesize the song. The song is not perfect because Uberuck adds some extra words to the song that don’t make a lot of sense, but it was fairly decent. I wasn’t able to find a good free tool to give my song some music, but the mission was still successfully completed — I made our graphic designer laugh really loud. It Can Be Inaccurate You should be aware that ChatGPT is not 100% accurate all the time. Currently, it’s impossible to prevent chatbots from giving you incorrect information so you should make sure to pay close attention to their outputs. 3. It Can Be Identified By Google Algorithms Google algorithms now can detect AI-generated content. As ChatGPT technology is trained based on articles, websites, and books, it recreates something that has already been published. If the algorithms detect that you are using auto-generated content, your SEO will suffer. 4. Lack of Personality Content generated by ChatGPT may not agree with the brand’s tone of voice or value.
