Anyone reading the news will be aware that Cyberspace is the new battleground of the 21st Century. Cyber attacks are increasingly in the headlines across the globe with malicious hackers complicit in everything from influencing elections to industrial sabotage.
The Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) has stated that by 2019, there will be a 2 million person global shortage of Cyber talent and there are estimates that Cyber Security incidents could cost Australia up to $29b per year. Analysis from Accenture shows that there have been twice as many serious private hacking attempts in 2018 versus 2017.
Cannon fodder is not enough in this type of battle. In order to defend against increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks you need “soldiers” armed with ethics, intellect, communication skills and specialised, practical training. The education system has caught on to the need for more talent and Universities and TAFE have been working to provide a range of new training options. While these courses are all valuable ways to acquire Cyber Security skills, it is important to shop around and understand the differences between the offerings.
