Naviance software is an integral part of the college research and application process. The Markup reviewed contracts between 10 universities and Intersect, a sister company to Naviance. Colleges and universities use Naviance to target students with paid advertisements encouraging them to enroll. The platform allows admissions officials to select what kinds of students will see their recruiting messages based on the students’ location, academic “ability,” the majors they’re interested in, and even their race. Naviance is owned by PowerSchool, which is exerting significant influence over students from kindergarten through college graduation.
