With over 20 movies, various characters, different movie trilogies, and multiple TV shows, it could be pretty hard and even overwhelming for new Marvel fans to jump into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It could be especially tough to figure out the correct movie order.

To make it easier, it might be better to focus on just one superhero’s film series. And what better character to start with than one of Marvel’s most popular heroes: Captain America? To avoid hitting you in the face with spoilers, I will try to make these synopses as bare-bones as possible. So, here are all of the Captain America movies in order.

Captain America Movies in Chronological Order

  1. Captain America: The First Avenger
  2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  3. Captain America: Civil War
  4. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
  5. Captain America: New World Order

1. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Captain America: The First Avenger is the start of the star-spangled hero’s story. Taking place during World War II, it follows Steve Rogers as he goes from military reject to Captain America himself. Opposing him is the nazi Red Skull and his Hydra army. But the Captain isn’t alone either.

He has his best friend, Bucky Barnes. He has his rag-tag team of allies called the Howling Commandos. And he has the help of Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. Although this movie takes place decades before the modern MCU setting, some of its storylines continue throughout other films.

After this, Captain America can next be seen in Marvel’s The Avengers.

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

In his second solo film, Captain America has a new mission in The Winter Soldier, trying to figure out who this mysterious soldier is. Where did he come from? Why is he so strong? Why does he have a metal arm? Why does he look so cool? These are the questions that Captain America is trying to answer.

After the events of The Avengers, the Captain has a new group of friends that he can rely on. He has fellow avenger Black Widow, SHIELD Director Nick Fury, and a new friend in the Falcon. And it will take all four of them to figure out this mystery because it’s been going on for decades, and when it’s finally unraveled, it will have long-lasting ramifications.

Captain America next makes an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

3. Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Although this was his third solo film, many people consider Captain America: Civil War to be an Avengers film. There’s a good reason for that: it’s because the entire team is featured in the movie.

And they’re not happy with each other either. A controversial decision has split the team in half. There’s Captain America’s side and Iron Man’s side, both believing that what they are doing is correct.

Civil War not only continues storylines that were going on in the Captain America movies but also some that were happening in the Avengers movies. So, it’s kind of necessary to watch them to get a full understanding of what’s going on.

After this, Captain America makes appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Both of these movies are required to understand the full story of Captain America.

4. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier isn’t a movie; it’s a miniseries. Nevertheless, it continues the Captain America saga. After both Infinity War and Endgame, the repercussions of what happened are felt throughout the world; the two people feeling it the most are the titular characters. They’ve never been the closest friends, but they’ll have to work together to take on a new threat.

It’s sort of hard to write about this miniseries without giving away too much, but it’s worth the watch.

5. Captain America: New World Order

Here is a movie that nobody knows much about, and that’s because it hasn’t been released yet. The fourth Captain America film was only recently announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022. According to Variety, it will be written by Malcolm Spellman, who was the head writer of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and by Dalan Musson, who was a staff writer on the series.

Although the landscape of the MCU is constantly changing, it seems like Captain America movies will be a mainstay; at least, for the foreseeable future. Which is good news for fans because those films are fantastic, and we can’t wait to see where they take the character next.
