Rooted in what is known as disruptive technology, the Accutron wrist watch led to the creation of a culturally iconic sneaker. How, exactly, you may ask?

In 1960, when Bulova released the first and most advanced electronic watch in the world, the design was considered to be a major breakthrough in timekeeping.

By 1976, there were over 5 million Accutron models sold. However, the timepiece has continued to evolve, paying homage to its original design. Accutron wrist watch technology did more than just keep time, and went on to influence newer models, modern clothing, and even space travel.

The Accutron Astronaut was a product developed to meet the demands of high speed flight and space travel. In fact, moon missions would not be possible without the accuracy of Accutron technology.

Also, Accutron technology was adopted by the US Air Force, the CIA, and NASA. In addition to space travel, Accutron technology also helped architects to hack into the world of exposed inner workings.

For example, Centre Pompidou in Paris is a building designed to be transparent, and is inspired by the Accutron “inside out” design. This strong and attractive design of the Accutron Spaceview inspired many designers to try something different.  Tinker Hatfield was no exception, as he used this inside out concept to create the Nike Air Max 1. Now considered to be one of the world’s most iconic shoes, The Air Max shoe is a prime example of a product that came to be because of Accutron technology.

The visible air bubble in the sole of the Nike Air Max 1 shoe was directly inspired by Paris’ Centre Pompidou building.

Now, the Air Max is a functional and fashionable shoe that is the center of many campaigns and collaborations. Brands like Atmos and Patta collaborated with Nike, with Atmos snagging the first ever Nike Air Max 1 collaboration.

Famous rapper and icon Travis Scott also released a collaboration with Nike, releasing his version of the Nike Air Force 1 Low in 2022. All inspired by the Accutron wrist watch design, it is clear to see how many timeless designs and technologies remain relevant in today’s modern market from a simple act of giving a gift.
