Information About Gladius

Gladius is a unique new network that incorporates the peer-to-peer nature of blockchain to develop a content delivery network (CDN) that only charges per service and protects using the platform from DDoS attacks.

The concept behind the system is to create a high quality CDN that focuses on protection and efficiency. Gladius does this by managing spare CPU, storage and bandwidth of computers connected to the network to perform tasks required by protection services and CDNs — multi-layered website authentication, malicious attack prevention, cloud storage, and content delivery.

Built upon the Ethereum blockchain which uses smart contracts to allocate services to pools of users, who then computers provide the resources required to store and deliver content, as well as monitor and authenticate web connection requests, Gladius will be a true pay as you go market place, where site owners and users can go to get essential online security and content delivery, at an affordable price.

What problems does Gladius address?

The Gladius network provides novel solutions for two major problems that plague all computers and users online; security and page load times.

When it comes to protection, Gladius will tackle the ever growing threat of DDoS (denial of service) attacks that can potentially bring down any website; a cybercrime that cost around $150 billion in losses in 2017, whilst corporations simultaneously spent an average of $5000+ per month on security measures to prevent such attacks.

Many high-profile companies such as the BBC, GitHub and Blizzard Entertainment have experienced devastating, and costly, hacks in the form of DDoS attacks; the average attack is said to cost approx. 2.5 millions dollars.

Many sites also utilize CDN services in order to speed up delivery times of content, so that users around the world can access webpages without noticeably long page load times. Gladius uses the blockchain and peer-to-peer architecture that pools together the resources of computers on the network, to create a highly effective and secure CDN, and simultaneously offering protection services against DDoS attacks.

How does Gladius work?

Technology behind Gladius…

Any computer can join the Gladius and become a node within a pool on the network by simply downloading the desktop peer client and installing it. The user may then rent out their machine’s CPU and storage space, as well their connections bandwidth.

The CPU is then used to validate website connections and block malicious activity, whilst the storage space and bandwidth are used to remotely save and deliver content to those browsing the web. With large pools of hundreds, or even thousands of users, Gladius will effectively exploit the unused resources of computers on the network to easily handle the continuous stream of requests that will made 24/7.

In addition, this peer-to-peer structure also provides increased security as sites are protected by thousands of pools, which would all need to be attacked simultaneously in order to be taken down.

Pools may be made up of multiple nodes, or individuals. Users find their preferred pool through the market place, where they can see information about a pool’s reputation, bandwidth, maximum cache size, location and cost. To join a pool the user makes a request via smart contract, the pool may deny the request if it believes the users will not be beneficial to the group based on factors such as bandwidth, storage and reputation.

Each pool will run a DNS service to distribute all traffic to the nodes for verification. Pools then have the ability to decide how to distribute its resources to the user.

All nodes on the network GLA earn tokens for each request validated, users may then sell these tokens back to websites to create an economy that promotes growth. These users will compete to offer the lowest price possible for their protection services, which will help lower prices as the platform matures.

Gladius also features a built-in reputation system to help prevent malicious pools, and all pools will have the ability to approve other nodes attempting to enter the pool. This ensures that the platform stays clean and healthy, without the need for additional maintenance. And because sites are protected by thousands of different pools and nodes, attackers would have to hit every single pool, instead of taking down a main, central server. This is the first time this type of decentralized security has been implemented into an online protection service.

Security Benefits of Gladius

According to the Nexusguard’s Q1 2017 “Threat Report” DDoS attacks have increased a staggering 380% in the first quarter of Q1 2017 alone, this positions the threat as one of the main forces that drives the internet security solutions industry, and similarly, the CDN market has experienced huge growth in recent years, now with over 14.5 million live website that rely on the technology. Gladius disrupts both those growing fields of online services by providing a one-stop solution that not only removes expensive middlemen, but also rewards it users simple for participating in the network.

By incorporating solutions that address both these issues into a self sufficient ecosystem built upon the secure and trusted nature of the blockchain, Gladius provides clear benefits for the whole ecosystem of devices that surf the internet with the assistance of the Gladius network, these include:

  1. Handle increasing user demand; more and more devices are connected to the internet everyday, all of which required content to be delivered in the fastest time possible. This means more CDNs are needed, however the cost and expensive fees prevent many websites from utilizing such services. The peer-to-peer nature of Gladius, together with its incentivization plan to reward users for offering resources that would have otherwise gone unused, encourages anyone with a device that’s connected to the internet to become part of the network, thereby increasing the number of nodes and the capacity to process all requests and services on demand 24/7
  2. Industry standard solution; since content is king online, fast efficient delivery of content is essential. The unique architecture of Gladius makes it possible for all computers to access protection and content delivery services.
  3. Increased revenues; speed, page loading times in this instance, is one of the main factors that affects the number of conversions a website can handle, which in return, directly affects the amount of profit the site can generate. Peer-to-peer CDN services will greatly improve load times for all sites on the network and increase revenues across the board.
  4. The peer-to-peer nature of Gladius eliminates third-party service charges and enables a pay per service structure to be implemented. This enables more users to employ services since they only need to pay for what they require, as opposed to paying blanket subscription fees, much of which cover costs for unneeded features/services.

It also encourages users to offer resources that would otherwise go to waste, and rewards them in tokens for their ‘mining’ work. With a limited number of Gladius tokens being issued, and the ability for all users to mine for tokens, the value of the GLA will increase proportionally with the growth of the network.

Gladius Roadmap

Gladius will first be constructed in two phases; the first to develop and incorporate the technologies that make up the architecture of the platform, the second to make the product commercial viable on a large scale. The platform will progress in 3 steps throughout the 2 phases. The first two steps will see the implementation of a concept system that will showcase the basic functions before going to official production mode in step 2. Only approved websites will be able to join the network at this point. Then once, the network can support large attacks and the core-technology is fine-tuned, step 3 will see the product rolled out worldwide.
