Too Long; Didn't Read

The vast tenant screening industry is subject to less regulation than credit scoring agencies. Experts warn that algorithms could introduce racial or other illegal biases that can prevent people from getting housing. ProPublica found that such ratings have come to serve as shadow credit scores for renters. The industry has expanded dramatically as the number of renters has grown and new technology has made it easier to access vast troves of data. Tenants often can’t get enough information to understand why they were marked as a risk to landlords.
