Perspectives Can Be Your Shortcut to Google's Front Page Without Traditional SEO Hassle In the last few days, I've been rigorously testing Google’s Perspectives tab - a new feature that boldly to ' ’ claims bring diverse voices to search. The drive behind my deep dive was pretty pragmatic. I wanted to figure out if Perspectives could be a shortcut for brands and content creators to Google’s traffic, bypassing the standard heavy SEO grind. And if that’s the case, how do we optimize for them? Since Google over 90% of the global online search market, we have solid reasons to look at its Perspectives closely. dominates Below are the key findings and thoughts on that. What Is the Perspectives Tab? As Google states on its , Perspectives aims to help users 'learn from others' unique experiences.'  And they consistently emphasize “ ” whenever discussing this feature. blog human experience Keep this in mind: if you plan to optimize for the Perspectives tab, your content should focus on how you 'touched and tested' the topic, rather than just generally covering it. I'll delve more into optimization strategies below. Now, let's return to the essence of Perspectives. The idea behind this filter is to uncover "hidden gem" content, which may not be easily found online, and bring it to the forefront of search results. In fact, the Perspectives tab is a response to a particular user search behavior known as the “ .” This involves users adding 'Reddit' to their queries to bypass unhelpful SEO-optimized fluff and find valuable human insights. Reddit trick So now, with Perspectives, users have access to such insights shared beyond just Reddit. Visually, the tab resembles a Pinterest board linking to various types of content and channels: YouTube and TikTok videos, forums (Reddit and Quora), personal blogs, and websites. IMO, it somewhat resembles an online casino. Though this is subjective. So far, Perspectives is only available on mobile devices, but Google plans to introduce it on soon as well. s desktop The Key Benefit of the Perspectives Tab for Brands and Content Creators Ranking on Perspectives can propel your content onto Google's first SERP (search engine results page), sidestepping the traditional SEO grind. That’s what I believe is the main value in showing up on this filter. Here's how it works: Google plans to integrate top Perspectives content directly into the main organic search results. This will create a dedicated section on the SERP, aptly named… Perspectives 😂. Here’s what Google about it: says You can access this content (i.e., Perspectives filter) through a dedicated Perspectives section that may appear on the results page. By tapping the “See more” link, you can access the full page of Perspectives content that you would by using the filter. Feeling a bit lost in this 'Perspectives kaleidoscope'? 🥴 That's understandable. Initially, there was even a third type of Perspectives, but it seems to have been phased out for now. To simplify, let’s differentiate between the two main types: The Perspectives Tab (or filter), which we’ve already explored, and the Perspectives Carousel, which appears directly on the SERP. Perspectives Tab vs Perspectives Carousel - What’s the Difference? I asked the SGE bot, the main hero of Google's upcoming transformation, for clarification. AI Search It responded 🤖: From this AI's typical fluffy answer, combined with what I've gleaned from Google's blog, it's evident that both the Perspectives Tab and Carousel serve the same purpose: showcasing human-generated, experience-rich content. However, the key difference is where and how they’re nestled on the search page. Take the Perspectives Tab. It’s a small blink filter (see the screenshot above) that sometimes pops up front and center above the search bar, other times tucked away at the far right. Finding and tapping it requires extra effort from a user. In our fast-paced, easily distracted world, it's not the most attention-grabbing feature. But Perspectives Carousel is a different story. When top results from the Tab suddenly pop up in the Carousel, they're hard to miss (see the gif below). Here, content is showcased prominently, making it a potential hotspot for traffic. That is why this whole Perspectives game is worth the effort. Here’s what the Carousel is supposed to look like on SERP (still in testing). Next, onto the optimization part. How to Optimize for Google Perspectives? Launched in June 2023, Google Perspectives is still pretty new. Apparently, there isn't much data yet to discuss the best strategies. However, this doesn't stop us from exploring and understanding its nuances. After testing out Perspectives myself, below are some thoughts on how to approach it effectively. 1) Ensure Your Content Aligns With ‘Eligible’ Queries In my tests, I've noticed that the Perspectives tab usually pops up for most queries, but with some exceptions. Let’s call them ' ' queries. non-eligible They tend to fall under the , as outlined in Google's E-E-A-T guidelines (more on E-E-A-T is detailed below). Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) topics But with a surprising carve out, that IMO goes against logic. Let me explain. Google defines the YMYL topics as those that could significantly impact health, financial stability, safety, or societal welfare. Because of this exact impact, Google demands sources covering these topics to demonstrate heightened trustworthiness compared to non-YMYL content. So I’ve explored how the Perspectives tab responds to every YMYL category. Here’s what I found: a) The entire health domain, including unconventional healing, doesn't appear on the Perspectives tab No matter how hard I went on tweaking my queries. Here's an example of how Perspectives rejects my timeless weekend health query: Understandable. The impact of bad advice can be really detrimental. BUT b) Money-related queries, such as those about crypto, passive income, quick profits, and other scam-prone topics, are frequently featured on Perspectives** This is perplexing 🤔 Following the YMYL narrative, apparently money content shouldn’t be there. What’s more, while scrolling through ‘crypto and profits’ perspectives, I came across a bunch of dudes barely in their 20s. Some of them claim to have 'REAL experience' in successful investing and creating multiple passive income streams. How does Google ascertain the credibility of such experiences? c) The remaining YMYL topics - such as stability, safety, and societal welfare (including politics) - don't feature in Perspectives. I won't delve deep into these, as they're seldom the focus of brand or creator promotions. My checks confirmed their absence. So, to summarize: Perspectives seems to largely bypass YMYL topics, except the ‘your money’ ones… Which is weird. 2) Audit the Top-Ranking Content on Perspectives Around Your Niche Suppose you're promoting a ghostwriting service. Start by searching for a broad term like 'ghostwriting' to spot the top-performing subtopics. You will see subtopics: How to start How to make money How to hire, etc. It’s noteworthy that some of the top-ranking perspectives don’t necessarily boast high engagement (like a significant number of likes or views). To optimize, focus on these popular subtopics. Your goal should be to craft content that is more in-depth, refined, and updated than what's currently ranking. In marketing, it's always beneficial to draw inspiration from successful examples and then enhance upon them. 3) Identify Relevant Channels Using our ghostwriting example - most top-ranking perspectives appear on platforms like Quora and YouTube. Therefore, it makes sense to focus your efforts on these platforms. For other niches, channels might be different. So, the goal here is to identify which channels frequently appear in Perspectives for your targeted queries and publish your content exactly there. Demonstrate E-E-A-T in Your Content Simply put, is a set of Google’s principles to define the trustworthiness of content, so it may rank it. E-E-A-T The letters stand for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Now, let’s break them down, and see how you could demonstrate them in your content. Experience Refers to the author's direct, hands-on familiarity with the subject. To showcase this, illustrate in your content how you've personally tested the product or service in question. Share stories of attracting a group of testers and their feedback. Support your narrative with relevant images and videos that evidence your practical engagement with the topic. The key is to underscore that you've really practiced your subject, rather than just learning about it from books. Expertise Represents the author's depth of knowledge and skill in a specific area. To demonstrate expertise, reference authoritative sources and highlight the thorough research behind your work. You can further enhance your credibility by obtaining a 'reviewed' tag from an established expert or by collaborating with them on your content piece. Authoritativeness Authoritativeness is about being recognized as a go-to source for a particular topic. To achieve this, it's crucial to consistently focus on and produce content related to that topic, talking about it extensively. This is why the current trend of an anti-niche strategy might hinder your ranking in Perspectives. I personally love the anti-niche, but Google doesn’t. Trustworthiness Trustworthiness is the cornerstone of the E-E-A-T framework. It implies the credibility and reliability of both the content and the content creator. Trustworthiness underscores the necessity of presenting information that's accurate, free from deception, and transparent. To showcase it, be open about your background, share your personal stories, and provide contact details (excluding your home address, of course). Introduce your team and ensure easy ways to connect. Transparency is a sure sign that you’re trustworthy. Another key element is how you handle user feedback. Encourage it, engage actively, and address both compliments and critiques thoughtfully. Responding considerately to criticism demonstrates that you're attentive, mature, and committed to getting things right. 5) Avoid Being Overly Controversial (Yeah, That’s Weird) As someone who still harbors a teenage rebel's spirit at 36, I personally hate this tip. But unfortunately, Google’s algorithms don’t care much about our individual preferences. To rank well on Perspectives, content should be accurate and align with Google's standards. This often means corroborating your views with authoritative sources and experts. When your take is too far off the mainstream, backing it up becomes challenging, affecting both credibility and social engagement metrics (likes and shares). So, the trick is to strike a balance: be unique and original, but not too fringe. On the other hand, Perspectives isn't the only way to reach your audience. There are plenty of alternative paths to find your audience without compromising your strong distinct identity. 6) Optimize Your Visuals and Thumbnails for the Platforms Where You Create This is self-evident. But throwing this one for the completeness of the checklist. 7) Promote and Cross-Promote Your Content Another piece of clear-cut wisdom: The more social signals (likes, shares, comments) your content generates, the more it's favored by algorithms. Wrapping It Up I firmly believe that brands and content creators should seriously start tapping into Google Perspectives. Its potential to catapult your content to the front page of Google - the heart of global organic traffic - makes it an opportunity too significant to ignore. Plus, moving up in the Perspectives rankings doesn't involve the usual intensive SEO hassle typical of Google. More visibility with less effort – an offer too tempting to pass up, right? Due to this incident, patient records, appointments, and other critical systems were put offline, forcing medical personnel in hospitals to work manually and encourage paper-based work. “After fighting a strong battle to get back access to systems that faced a cyber attack on Saturday, Scripps claimed on the Monday afternoon that they have still not resolved that issue.“ However, Scripps has not confirmed yet that malicious software that was able to possess digital assets hostage under cash demand caused the disruption. Forums all across the internet were filled with Scripps patients which tended to seek more information about what would happen with those appointments which were made before the weekend. Noah Tyler of Carlsbad that, claimed “I was scheduled for the esophageal diagnostic process. I was supposed to receive the appointment’s location this weekend but access to the scheduling system was denied after the cyber attack. I couldn’t even look at the primary information. ” On Sunday, The San Diego County Office of Emergency Services (OES) declared that ambulances were diverted from Scripps facilities to other hospitals in that area as a precautionary measure. An employee with AMR which is the city’s ambulance provider said on Monday that at that certain time, Scripps was only taking trauma transports and foot traffic. The appropriate government organizations and local law enforcement were also notified of this cyberattack. Anne Cutler from the Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency was asked to share her views regarding the incident. She makes a reference to back to Scripps for her insights. There are multiple solid choices for sleep tracking using solely your iPhone or with your iPhone paired to an Apple Watch. In general, a wrist-mounted device provides more accurate sleep motion recordings than a phone placed near you in bed. In this post, I focus on apps that work with Apple Watch. **Updated 2018/08/15 to reflect the new automatic sleep-tracking capability of Pillow. Watch my video . It does not provide a graph of sleep stages or a smart alarm clock, for example. A single night of sleep in Health. I now recommend that you only use Pillow over AutoSleep due to its superior UI and automatic sleep-tracking capability. Another sleep tracking app, , has a key advantage over Pillow: it tracks your sleep automatically. Unlike Pillow, for which you have to launch the watch app to activate and stop sleep tracking, all you have to do with AutoSleep is wear your watch to bed. AutoSleep A single night of sleep in AutoSleep. With that said, AutoSleep’s UI is clunky, and I find the graphs hard to understand. Therefore, I only recommend this app if you plan to export data or as a backup source of data in case you forget to start or stop Pillow’s tracking manually. Sleep Watch is more limited than both Pillow and AutoSleep, but it may be the perfect fit depending on your needs. Sleep Watch A single night of sleep in Sleep Watch. Like AutoSleep, it starts and stops tracking automatically. Like Pillow, it has a good UI. However, it does not have a smart alarm clock function—it can only be used to track sleep and not to wake you up. Also, it does not give you the ability to export data. If you don’t need a smart alarm but want more detailed info than the Health app provides, this may be a great choice. On Data Accuracy All three apps provide similar, but not identical, sleep analysis data. For example, these were the calculated sleep durations for one night: Pillow: Asleep: 8:50; In Bed: 9:11 AutoSleep: Asleep: 9:04; In Bed: 9:04 Sleep Watch: Asleep: 9:05; In Bed: 9:05 Note that Apple Watch is a clinical-grade sleep tool. You can use the data to determine sleep trends, but you should not scrutinize it so closely. Neither Apple Watch nor any compatible apps can be used to diagnose medical conditions. not A future update will be dedicated to a more detailed comparison of sleep data between apps. (tell us your story) I currently work as a psychiatrist for adults. I am specializing in working with older adults and addiction medicine. I have been doing this work for over ten years in some capacity. I find helping people to be one of the most rewarding parts of my occupation. I notice that there is such stigma to talking about mental health problems for many people. It can be amazing to be a person that can help with mental health disorders because you can provide relief to people who might not have thought there was any help available to them. The work is emotional at times and you can put a lot of yourself into it, so it’s important to have other outlets and hobbies. Taking time out for self-care is important and everyone deserves that. One of the things I work on outside my job is community service. I am a member of a friendly neighborhood hackerspace. At the hackerspace, I have given free or low-cost workshops and classes about various topics. Some of the things I have taught are how to make bath bombs and how to make lip balm. I have also taught these classes for free at the local library. In addition to that, I am a volunteer curator of a startup newsletter for . I help as a volunteer organizer for in my local area. During my volunteer work as a Blogging Fellow at Hacker Noon, I have written some articles either focusing on mental health or including a mental health spin. These have widely circulated. I don’t make them with a set pattern, but they turn out well in most cases.  It has been very touching to know that making a simple hat can really help someone. This project is still going on through the years and we were able to donate hats throughout the Pandemic. 3. How did you end up on your current career path? Do you like it? For various reasons, I think this path picked me. During the last 20 years, American attitudes about mental health treatment and self-care have greatly changed. And that is just my personal observation, but what I have noticed is that is becoming more permissible to talk about mental health topics. For example, college campuses are putting more money towards mental health services for students. That includes medical treatment and psychotherapy, but also self-care practices like meditation and yoga. I really like this direction, but it can be radically improved still in so many ways. 4. What tech are you most excited or passionate about right now and why? Social media has the opportunity, even the calling, to bring people together all around the world. I am most excited by its potential to be helpful even as I see the increasing negatives of social media. Social media companies have been able to connect parts of the world and make it easier to keep in touch with others for less expense and time. Family members who would only be able to call each other once a month before because of the expense now can freely video chat every evening. Relationships that previously might be strained by distance and finances are maintained more easily. All that being said, the clear negative impact of some aspects of social media cannot be ignored. The ambivalence about its nature makes social media fascinating to me. 5. What tech are you most worried about right now and why? I am most concerned about security and privacy and how it will develop in the future. To that end, I have taken classes on information security and talked to cybersecurity professionals. I have educated myself on the basics of cybersecurity knowing that my knowledge really only skims the surface. I have taken steps to learn more about computer technology and cybersecurity in the last 5 years. I have found that to be one of the better investments of my time and energy because though I do not understand everything, my learning has helped me understand what I do not know. 6. If we gave you 10 million dollars to invest in something today, what would you invest in and why? If I had 10 million dollars to invest in something today, I think the best use of my investment would be to donate the money to . Khan Academy During the Pandemic, I took some of the math classes on the Khan Academy website and I found them to be extremely high-quality ways to learn. Khan Academy levels the playing field for young people who might not have money for additional classes outside of school, like Kumon or other tutoring. I was surprised to see that Khan Academy also has an Association of Medical Colleges-backed curriculum for studying for the medical school admission test, MCAT! 7. What are you currently learning? Right now, I am studying psychiatry daily and reviewing my field’s current knowledge. But in addition to that, I am also planning to review math. I have used various resources for my study of math, but Khan Academy was the most entertaining and thorough. 8. What’s the best advice you’ve ever given someone? I think the best advice I have ever given anyone was to “Be Yourself and Believe in Yourself”  I am not sure if people have always found this to be the most helpful advice for . them As a psychiatrist, you never know what people really catch on to when you talk to them. What do people remember about the advice I gave? I am never really sure. 9. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? The best teacher in any subject is your personal experience. That includes the mistakes you make. I think in my past people might have given me plenty of advice on a variety of topics, but the best teacher was my personal experience. Breaking the Stigma of Mental Health with Amy Pravin Shah, Noonies Nominee 2021

Do you feel exhausted, even frustrated working hard, putting in extra hours, sometimes even on weekends and late nights trying to catch up on work, but not being able to make progress on your own goals? Is it the demands of the workplace that’s eating up into your time or the fact that you don’t have control over your own schedule. Do you create value or simply doing work to satisfy others expectations? Jumping in to solve every crisis at work, saying yes to new projects even when your plate is full, staying late to help others while missing the deadlines of your own deliverables, pushing your personal commitments aside to make time for another meeting, nodding your head in agreement even though you disagree and answering every email and message as if your life depended on it. Helping others out of genuine care goes a long way in establishing trust and building better relationships at work. But when it stems from the desire to make others think favourably of you, manipulating how they perceive you by doing things that make them happy, seeking constant validation, acceptance and approval to establish your own sense of self-worth, you are only concerned with the “I”. With your decision making rooted in reward and punishment, you develop a strong tendency to be a people pleaser. At its core, being nice is about being liked by others by making everything smooth. No waves, no friction. It’s based on this (woefully inaccurate) theory: If I please others, give them everything they want, keep a low profile, and don’t ruffle feathers or create any discomfort, then others will like me, love me, and shower me with approval and anything else I want -  Aziz Gazipura People pleasing is not harmless though it may seem like it. You are not acting out of your sense of goodness for others but rather it’s deeply seated in your fear of rejection, feeling of helplessness, risk of failure, discomfort from displeasing others and not having the courage to receive their disapproval. It’s utterly damaging to your own self and your relationship with others. Overthinking and evaluating every move to make others happy prevents you from speaking up your mind, expressing your true intent, come to reality with your own beliefs and do things that will bring actual value to work. Risks of being a people pleaser 1. Live with a sense of mediocrity as opposed to establishing excellence Being always ready to help others at the cost of your own time and health, pushing your commitments aside to make time for others and never learning to say no will make you over commit. As you find it hard to catch up on your commitments, you will end up doing mediocre work and may even fail to deliver on some of your promises. Your performance will suffer, team members will despise you for producing low quality work and others may lose trust for breaking the promises you should have never made in the first place. Since people are not privy to your other commitments, they will use their own yardstick to define your value through the value you deliver to them. Being a people pleaser will subject you to intense criticism as opposed to being an object of their affection. 2. Struggle with focus and poor quality of decisions Restraining yourself to act on your impulse and pretending to be someone you are not will consume large amounts of energy leaving less energy for doing focused work. shows that our willpower is like a muscle that can get tired. After exercising self control and pouring all your energy into pleasing others, your mental resources will be depleted. You will fail in your attempts to do focused work which will add to your sense of frustration and cause you further stress and anxiety. Research With less control over your emotions, you will react to things around you instead of acting with intent. Being a people pleaser, you will consciously make a series of decisions based on other’s sense of right and wrong as opposed to standing upto what’s right. Instead of making a few decisions and making them well, every activity will turn into a struggle to align with other’s interests and sense of approval leading to decision fatigue. And when these decisions turn out bad, you will be questioned for your sense of judgment. It will come as no surprise that others will not trust your opinion and disregard it when making important decisions. 3. Drown in misery and break relationships instead of strengthening them “We put so much of our time and energy into making sure that we meet everyone’s expectations and into caring about what other people think of us, that we are often left feeling angry, resentful and fearful”, says Brene Brown in I Thought It Was Just Me. and Melody Beattie writes in Codependent No More “We rescue people from their responsibilities. We take care of people’s responsibilities for them. Later we get mad at them for what we’ve done. Then we feel used and sorry for ourselves” As a people pleaser, you will go above and beyond to meet others expectations, constantly shuffle your own priorities and try to squeeze out every bit of your attention to make time for someone or something. Eventually, overwork, burnout and exhaustion will create a feeling of resentment towards the same people you volunteered to help. You might even realise that you are being taken for granted or that others take advantage of you because of your enthusiasm to never turn anyone down. Your anger and resentment towards your own behaviour will impact your well being and also build bridges of misunderstanding with your coworkers. Instead of strengthening bonds, it will break relationships. Recognise if you are a people pleaser Maybe you are not a people pleaser. How about a friend, family member, colleague or anyone else you care about. Does it seem like they struggle due to their desire to please everyone? Do them a favour and send them this list of questions that can help a people pleaser recognise and acknowledge their struggle. Remember, before any transformation comes acceptance. Are you making the right commitments, first to yourself and then to others Are you fearful of saying no What’s driving your current behaviour - fear of being rejected or genuine desire to help Do you prioritise helping others at the cost of your own health Do you have the courage to be disliked Are you constantly comparing yourself to others Are you truly making a contribution or pretending to add value Do you find it difficult to define boundaries Do you push your personal commitments aside to make time for others Do you have hard time delegating work Do you feel angry and resentful in trying to meet others expectations Do you feel taken for granted Do you have a hard time letting others down Are you exhausted from pretending and trying to keep everyone happy What causes you to be a people pleaser and what to do instead Eleanor Roosevelt said, “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.” How we behave and what we believe is the creation of our own minds. We make a lot of assumptions about how others perceive us and also how they think and act. Our version of the story seems to align beautifully with the way we picture everything around us. Without realising that everyone has enough of their own challenges to deal with and do not have time to over analyse our actions, we try to assume a central position in everyone’s lives - what will he think of me if I say a no, will she despise me if I tell her that her idea is no good, will my boss consider me unreliable if I skip a meeting to attend to a family commitment and so on. Driven by our past experiences, upbringing and many other environmental factors, our thinking is just one version of the reality amongst many possibilities yet unexplored. Tendency to please others is a line of thinking that regards - 1. External validation as a measure of one’s worth Reluctance to take up new challenges with the fear that you might fail and make others think less of you. Willing to push your own commitments aside to make time for others and earn their admiration. Trying hard to avoid mistakes with the fear of being ridiculed. Saying and doing things that make others happy even if you disagree with their point of view. Seeking approval on ideas as opposed to engaging in a healthy debate. Considering conflict as an attack on your identity instead of a means to seek alignment. When your sense of self-worth is tied to external validation, you strive hard to stay in the spotlight. You constantly seek opportunities where you can be praised. Approval defines happiness, availability is mistaken for productivity, acceptance becomes accomplishment and agreement symbolizes admiration. Being a people pleaser will trap you within the boundaries of your own limitations by seeking external validation instead of utilising your true potential. What to do instead Instead of seeking an external measure of your worth, compare yourself to your own ideal self. Identify who you wish to become, what values are important to that person and then seek internal alignment with those values by asking : How is my behaviour in line with my value system What can I do to be better How can I learn What does this failure teach me about myself How can I develop a growth mindset What’s my sense of right and wrong What do I believe 2. Agreement implies respect and admiration When you consider agreement as a sign of respect and well disagreement just the opposite of it, you automatically incline towards popular opinions and stay away from anything that might draw attention. You do not realise that by withholding information and not speaking up your mind, you end up doing more harm than good. You deprive others from a chance to fix the situation, correct their behaviour, think more clearly, explore alternate viewpoints and make the best decisions with the relevant information. What if you kept quiet and did not tell your boss that their idea sucks with the fear of disappointing them only to find out later that it costed your company a lot of money. How about not standing up and fighting for your case when you see that your manager is clearly biased in not promoting you. What about committing to unrealistic timelines only because your stakeholders pushed hard on it and you believed that pushing them back will hurt your reputation. As a people pleaser, you believe that you have to choose between being honest and being likeable, disagreement and respect, speaking with candor and saving your career. What to do instead You don’t have to choose. You can be authentic and still be effective. “At the very core of every successful conversation lies the free flow of relevant information. People openly and honestly express their opinions, share their feelings, and articulate their theories. They willingly and capably share their views, even when their ideas are controversial or unpopular - Joseph Grenny Speak up not with the desire to please others or save their feelings, but with the intent to share your beliefs and opinions, whatever they may be. Choose what’s right and not what’s popular. Putting this into practice requires starting with low stakes situation at home or with people you can trust, feeling comfortable in pushing your point of view forward, practicing and slowly building your way up to confront other situations and people at work. It’s going to be uncomfortable in the beginning, but you can draw strength from knowing it’s the right thing to do and the only way to communicate effectively. 3. Saying no hurts reputation Can you deliver this new feature next week, can you do my code review, can you help me debug this piece of code, can you come on weekend for interviews, can you join the office party this Friday, can you attend this meeting, can you share your views on this design...yes, yes and yes. You say yes to everything that comes your way since you believe that saying no will make people judge you, think of you as mean, incompetent, lazy, uncommitted, ungrateful, biased, rude. You associate negative feelings with “no” and feel a sense of relief by blurting out “yes.” By saying yes, you have at least saved yourself from their brunt at the moment. But did you think about what’s going to happen later? Do you really believe that you can manage everything and still do a great job? Well, your over enthusiastic yes will soon be a source of stress as you struggle to barely keep up with your commitments. You will definitely mess a few things up and that’s not going to impress people. Saying no will not hurt your reputation, saying yes to everything surely will. As a people pleaser, saying yes to everything will prevent you from focusing on what matters, chase after unrealistic goals, add frustration, stress and anxiety to your life while not really adding value to your work or to others. What to do instead Do what matters. Say yes, but not at the cost of your own time and health. If something doesn’t align with your goals and values, say no. Saying no is not easy, but it’s possible with a few key practices: When you aren’t sure of saying yes, take a pause. Don’t say yes immediately. Ask for time to evaluate before making a decision. If the request doesn’t align with your goals or fit into your priorities or you simply don’t have time for it, say no. If the request makes sense but your plate is full, reach out to the right person to help you reprioritise. You can also help the other person by directing them to someone else who’s equally capable. Go ahead, initiate the connection. Use the right language while saying no. Don’t try to justify your no, be clear and concise in your message, show respect, thank them for considering you and then politely deny. People will not think less of you if you put across your no in the right manner. They would rather appreciate your honesty. Do not leave people hanging. If you promised to get back, make sure you do so within your promised timeline. Workplaces are filled with requests, someone is always in need of help. Saying yes will not add more value to your team and your organisation, saying no when it’s the right thing to do will. 4. Independent value creation is the path to establish credibility One of the greatest barriers to connection is the cultural importance we place on "going it alone." Somehow we've come to equate success with not needing anyone. Many of us are willing to extend a helping hand, but we're very reluctant to reach out for help when we need it ourselves. It's as if we've divided the world into "those who offer help" and "those who need help." The truth is that we are both - Brene Brown You are reluctant to reach out for help with the assumption that it makes you look weak, you do not share knowledge to create dependency and prove your worth and you prefer doing things yourself instead of delegating to your team with the mindset that independent value creation is the only way to build credibility and earn respect. Instead of bringing value to the team with your knowledge and skills, you end up blocking their progress. The mindset to “do it alone” impacts the collective output you can produce as a team. Your charade to please others by over indexing on the self is damaging to your team and the organisation. What to do instead Share your knowledge, empower your team with the right tools and resources to help them succeed, show your vulnerability and say “I don’t know” to seek out help and learn from others, recognise and appreciate others, share credit when others deserve it, don’t pass on blame when things don’t work out, acknowledge your mistakes and own them. With your actions rooted in a shared definition of success, you will build trust and earn respect from your team and others.
