Did you know that hackathons can help your startup grow? And I am not talking about sponsoring some hackathon, but conducting one for your startup. You must be wondering: ‘Isn’t a hackathon a big tentpole-type event, that only Enterprises can afford?’ 🤔 To be honest, I had a similar notion. In fact, I had pitched hackathons as an idea in my previous job at a startup, but it was rejected due to the above bias. 🤦 Whatever analysis I could gather, hinted at this as an expensive proposition with hard-to-justify ROI. So obviously, it didn't make the cut However, when I took the plunge to start UXHack, somewhere I had the urge to validate my hypothesis. In its initial avatar, UXHack was essentially a platform for companies to get UX Feedback on their products, from Product & design professionals and aspirants. So, to grow the platform, I needed both : who can provide feedback and Users who would be willing to post their problems Startups I thought to myself: ‘This is probably a good time to validate my hypothesis if a hackathon can work for a startup?’ But there were challenges: I didn't have a big budget. In fact almost zilch I didn't have an innovation problem that could be solved by coding And I knew, given the premise, just naming it as 'Hackathon' would have sent the wrong signals. But I had to execute it anyhow. So, here are a few things I did: Termed it as ' ' as that's what essentially it was all about UX Hackathon Identified partners: A partner to help in distribution. Where can I find startups and users both? Co-working seemed to be the best bet. Didn't want it to be a big bang. So, being in Noida, just shortlisted popular co-working spaces here and got Unboxed Coworking as a co-brand A reward partner: Thought some organization that provides Product/Design certifications could be a good fit. So reached out to and they too got on board Upgrad Got a few in my network, whom I respected as professionals, to be judges Created a very basic landing page, and we were on. In fact, I cringe when I look back at it now. 😎 The first hackathon we did itself got us 200+ new users and had 5 startups posting their problems In the initial couple of years, we managed to do around 7-8 hackathons which I think gave us roughly 1k new users. So, If you are wondering if hackathons are a right fit for your startup, here are key learnings that can help you decide 👇 : I think the general perception in the market is that a hackathon is all about coding, and hence you don’t see many startups do it. But, to be honest, a hackathon can also be about Design improvement, UX improvement, or just about getting the best feedback on your landing page. Can you identify such problems for your startup? Hackathon is just not about novel ideas or coding : Since we were solving a chicken and egg problem, it worked for us. You will need to evaluate the nature of your business and accordingly see if there is a fitment. Though, I do believe, any business can definitely tie in hackathons as a way to find the right talent. It should naturally fit with your business : While cash prizes attract, I have seen vouchers/in-kind/internships/job offers can also work equally well. It all depends on your target audience and the complexity of the problem statements. You don’t need a big budget Having the right partners is like having a secret sauce. Distribution is the key: Basically try to get three types of partners: Distribution partners: those who can help you spread the word Reward partners: those who can provide cool rewards Judges: those who can judge the submissions From the above three, I will say the first is the most important. Without the right noise and reach, your hackathon will not go anywhere. In our case, we found the right distribution partner in Co-working. Since they had both companies and our target users. Can’t emphasize this enough. We weaved into our product an event module to help us run this smoothly. So, from people signing up, submitting their work, and getting evaluated, we tried to make it as operationally efficient as possible. Leverage a platform or use no-code tools to bring efficiency: We have tried both online and offline hackathons. Conduct it online: But guess what? Online hackathons have always performed better for us. Both time and moneywise, it has always given us better ROI. And I think both are key for any startup. How I Used Hackathons to Grow My Startup

(Amazon Web Services) and are both providers of Cloud Infrastructure as a Service. While AWS is certainly miles ahead when it comes to the breadth and depth of cloud offerings, I thought for someone who is just getting started on setting up a cloud, let me try to compare both from a UX lens. AWS Digital Ocean At , we use both AWS and Digital Ocean. Started our journey with AWS but just to ensure we don't have a dependency on only one provider, also explored Digital Ocean. UXHack Today we have our main site running on AWS and our forum and test servers running on Digital Ocean. From a UX standpoint, for me, three most important elements that any cloud provider should focus on: Ease of setup Predictable & transparent pricing based on various options Context-based support resources For the purpose of comparison, I will walk through the journey of setting up a basic building block i.e. a cloud server on a standard l5" laptop screen. Here are the key things to consider when setting up a server: Server hardware: RAM, Processor, etc. OS and version: Linux, Windows, Ubuntu, etc Region Whether automated backups are needed Need for extra storage i.e. hard disk Basis the above factors, the final price you will pay per month is derived. With the above background, now let's look at how you can go about configuring the same on AWS and DigitalOcean In AWS, these cloud servers are generally known as Elastic Compute (EC2) instances; in Digital Ocean, they are known as Droplets. Here's how the first fold appears on AWS: And here's how it's laid out in Digital Ocean: By looking at both the above images, think it's pretty evident that Digital Ocean makes for a meaningful impression right from the first fold. Focused attention on the type of instance I want to setup whereas in AWS the first thing is a Name and one needs to scroll a bit to start meaningful interaction. Let's move further down now and look at the next folds of AWS: In the above snapshots, I think there's a lot of unnecessary information like AMI-ID and Network settings which AWS shows upfront. And the information which should be more detailed like monthly pricing is not even shown or can be missed easily because of the smaller font size 🤦‍♂️. Hint: Find '1GB Memory' in the above image. Let's now compare the above with how it's laid out in Digital Ocean: While the number of folds is certainly more in Digital Ocean, I think, all the requisite information is very well laid out. And perhaps a reason why the screen does not look cramped with text all over unlike in AWS. Easy to comprehend different types of instances like Basic, CPU Optimized, and Memory Optimized whereas in AWS, the terminology is quite technical t2.micro Very easy to compare different price points (monthly) w.r.t hardware and instance type). I still don't understand why AWS leave it to the user to calculate this 🤔 An important aspect of 'Region'. Digital Ocean has made it a part of the flow, unlike AWS where the region is something you need to select on the top right ('Oregon') in the image To sum up, whenever I have tried to set up anything in Digital Ocean like Cloud server, Remote Database, CDN, Storage etc. it has always been a better experience as compared to AWS. Though as shared first up, AWS is miles ahead when it comes to overall capabilities, and thus sometimes UX takes a back seat. But I am pretty sure, for the capabilities that are matched, I will recommend you to start with Digital Ocean else you might find yourself lost in a maze :) Also published . here

Comparing AWS vs Digital Ocean From a UX Perspective

For my own as well as for business purposes, earlier I used to rely on tools like Hootsuite, Buffer & others. Though never really got hang of them due to following reasons: Constraints in free subscription: Limited social accounts, no/limited analytics Felt it doesn't warrant a monthly subscription. Think it only works for large agencies who want to manage workflows etc In fact, once we got a paid intern just to post manually on all the channels. And then I got exposed to some lovely no-code tools like (formerly Integromat) & . And that's how the experiment started to see if I can develop something that can work for our use cases. Make Airtable And voila, it worked out. We now post on UXHack channels ( , , , & ) through our LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Instagram Telegram own Social Media Management Tool. It's a direct time saver for us being an early-stage startup. And thus thought to write a basic construct on how we were able to accomplish it using the above-mentioned No-code tools. Airtable: is a powerful, visual platform that helps you build databases and tables on the fly. Also, they provide an easy form view to get entries to the table Airtable.com We created a table and a form through which we submit the Social posts Make (formerly Integromat): is a powerful workflow automation tool (similar to Zapier) that has integrations to popular apps like Social Media Platforms, Airtable, Gmail, Slack, and many more Make It also provides an automatic job scheduler through which you can actively poll the source App for a new event. And that’s how Make is able to listen to our Airtable workspace and fetches all posts that are not yet published Once the post is fetched on the Make side is where all the logical checks are done: Does the post contain hyperlinks Does the post has a media attachment (for now we only check for Image files) Does the post is meant for specific channels or all supported channels Based on the rules, the post moves through the Integromat workflow rules and gets published Once the post is published, the status is automatically updated on the Airtable side. Tracking the performance of our Social media posts So in general all posts we publish, they have one or the other hyperlinks to our website uxhack.co And hence while parsing hyperlinks via Make, we append UTM parameters to those in a way like: For Twitter: twitter_integromat is added as utm_source and utm_medium (perhaps updated utm_source should now be twitter_make 😀) And likewise for other channels We believe impressions are vanity metrics. For us what matters is how much traffic to our site we could attribute to these posts. And thus basis UTM parameters, we have created a custom dashboard on Google Analytics that gives us a good view of: Traffic comparison basis social channels Comparison of different posts (basically hyperlinks) Obviously, this is not as intuitive as Hootsuite or Buffer interface but definitely, worth the effort, we have put in. How We Built a Social Media Publishing Tool Using Airtable + Make (formerly Integromat)

For the past two years, I have been working with aspiring designers who have completed courses and wanted to find their first job. Finding a job is a hot topic. The competition is now higher than ever and the requirements for candidates are getting broader. I have been fortunate to mentor and train hardworking designers who truly dedicated themselves to learning. For many, looking for a job is a long tedious process. I want to share some alternatives to finding jobs that you can use if you are currently looking for a job as a junior designer. 1. Design Internship More companies are willing to invest in new talent. It can be a good starting point in a design career. Pros: The company has prepared a development plan for a young designer. This means that interns will initially know what their goals are for the coming months and what they need to do to achieve them. Interns work with a mentor. Often, the programs are led by several senior designers who help young designers. Interns learn quite a lot and see how processes run in large companies. Interns understand how to work in a team of developers and managers. Cons: The internship takes from several weeks up to 2-3 months. After an internship, designers often have to look for a new job. Only a few companies offer free internships. The company may be located in different locations, which means that designers need to move to another city or country. Take Part in Hackathons or Design Contests Such events are often held free of charge and take from 2 days to several weeks, breaks included. Pros: The hacker will understand how to work in a team with people from different companies. The hacker will learn to work within limits. Such restrictions can be (the date and time the project was delivered), , (create a design in such a way that developers have time to implement everything that has been designed), and . time technologies used by developers the amount of work that the product (project) is convenient to use A ready-made case in a portfolio. Personally, from my experience in 1 year, I compiled 4 projects in my portfolio that I am proud of and am preparing to add to my portfolio. Getting to know a lot of people, which is never a bad thing. Free interesting lectures or workshops are often held during hackathons. The hacker will quickly become familiar with new technology. Cons: The end product does not fully depend on you (if this is not an individual competition) Sometimes you have to change or add people to the team. Spending more energy. Volunteering There are many volunteer projects and they often need additional specialists. Pros: Volunteers are immersed in a real project with the opportunity to implement everything they know. It is possible to practice not only UI but also to offer UX skills. Teamwork. Complete project for a case study in a portfolio. Cons: Team members are not always motivated. Limited working hours for members. Many can work alongside helping at volunteer projects. Nobody knows how long you will stay there. It might end before you know it. Freelance I understand that it’s scary for novice designers to take freelance work because they want someone nearby who can help. But still, taking a small project as a landing page even once is a pretty good option. Pros: Freelancers choose how much their work costs Direct communication with the customer. Often, on small projects, there is only one point of contact, which is good for a junior designer, since the project can be closed faster. Freelancers learn time management. One project = one case study in a portfolio. Flexible Work Schedule: It is possible to work on several projects. No need to go to an office, so no additional time costs. There is an opportunity to choose with whom to work, what project to choose, or turn down. Cons: No mentor and lack of live communication. Unstable Earnings: Projects do not come every week. Freelancers have to look for clients themself. Do their bookkeeping and pay taxes. Freelance platforms: Fiverr Upwork Freelancer Behance 5. Practice more If you do not have the opportunity to do all the above, another option would be to practice your skills on your own. Some platforms offer various tasks that are aimed at developing design skills. Tasks come every day and they are always different. You choose how detailed your design should be, spend 2 or 8 hours if you want. Organizations often offer to share their work with other members to get feedback. Pros: New tasks every day. Opportunity to develop UI skills. Opportunity to receive feedback on your work from colleagues. 1 day = 1 new project in a portfolio. Cons: You work on your own. You won’t learn how to work in a team or with a manager. No earnings. After you have tried one of the alternatives, you will have a broader idea of what the processes consist of. I hope this knowledge will help someone to sail through the interview in the future. It is a good opportunity to have at least one portfolio case if just to try at least one of the options. DAO is a concept, not a tech Web3 hacks are reported almost daily. Bugs are everywhere - in code, protocols, smart contracts logic, wallets, tools, etc. You can’t handle it all, but you can avoid it. Don’t use a buggy tech, or only use it if there is no other choice. This is one of the fundamental approaches to cybersecurity - to reduce the attack surface. How to make something unhackable Follow a “nothing to hack” approach. What’s hackable in DAO on the tech level - treasury or shared account, don’t use it. Each proposal should be invested separately (money out). Profit can be divided immediately (money in). No treasury - no hack. L2 DAO DAO is just a protocol, any protocol can be implemented on a p2p basis without intermediaries (thanks to cryptography). To integrate L2 DAO in existing blockchain networks just multisig wallet can be used. Moreover, onchain DAOs are very expensive at scale. Imagine onchain voting of 1K members, cost = tx_fee * 1K, what if 1M? Offline To be online (hot wallets use) is insecure, manage your private keys and sign your transactions on offline devices (bad UX, but better security). Governance Governance is the most difficult part, unhackable governance is a challenge.
