Hello Devs, being an author of a popular and an I often receive questions like: Should I go for Coursera certifications? Are they worth it? Should I go for Udemy certifications or edX certification? Will they help me get a job and ease my career development process? e.t.c. Java blog educator After answering them separately over Facebook and Twitter, I thought to write this blog post to address common concerns from programmers and developers who want to learn new skills online but are concerned about their value. While online courses provide an excellent platform for learning at low cost, at your schedule, and at your own pace, when it comes to course completion certification, you can debate their value. As I said, I often received questions from my readers about the worth of the certifications they offer. Many people asked me whether course completion certificates offered by , , , , , or any such online platforms are worth anything? Udemy Coursera edX Educative Udacity The answer to this question is because it totally depends on what worth means for you? both Yes, and No If you are thinking that just completing a  Computer Science or on Coursera and displaying a completion certificate on your resume or on LinkedIn will land you a Job then definitely, it's not worth it. But, at the same time, these certifications can put your resume forward to many Recruiters looking for Data scientists. Data Science course A course completion certificate doesn't make you an expert, but it does show that you have completed a course on a particular subject, which means you know about it, and are a constant learner, an essential attribute that hiring managers look out for, while hiring Programmers, Engineers, Developers, and Data Scientists. It's a sad truth that . Yes, the number might seem surprising, but it's true. almost 90% of people who start an online course never complete them I know many of my friends who teach classes on Udemy with thousands of learners enrolled in them, but hardly a few of them ever complete the course. A course completion certification definitely gives you some edge. Even with my , not everyone who joins my course completes it. Java and Spring certification courses At the same time, you need to remember that a course completion certification is very different from Oracle's Java certification or AWS certification from Amazon, or Azure Certification from Microsoft which really tests your skill and then awards your certificate. The certifications listed above are definitely more valuable than a standard course completion certificate from Udemy, Coursera, edX, Educative, or Udacity but again there are exceptions like on Coursera which is highly valued by many employers. Google's IT support certification Are Coursera and Udemy Course Certifications Worth it? Do they boost your credentials? I have been on both sides of the table in Programming interviews. As a candidate, I have seen Recruiters show interest in my resume and talk about my certifications, while as an Interviewer and hiring manager, I also give more credence to people who have certifications on their resumes. To those who don't have them, they’re still considered, provided they show similar dedication and skill, with other things like experience. I have also seen recruiters storm a developer’s profile after the addition of , , and . There is certainly value there but just having the certification will not guarantee you anything exception initial exposure. Java Spring AWS certifications When I see a Resume with a certificate on it, I always think that this guy is a constant learner, believes in upgrading his skills, and also puts some effort apart from his job to learn something valuable for his career. These are definitely some of the important traits I look for in a potential hire. But, you need to be extremely careful here. It's Ok to not put a certification or a course completion proof on your Resume, but If you have evidence, you must be ready to prove that you have acquired them. For example, if someone is saying he is an and can't answer a couple of tricky questions about operator precedence in Java, I will doubt that he is really worth the certification. Oracle certified Java developer Similarly, if you say that you completed on Coursera but don't know what a compute engine, BigQueury or BigTable is, then I take it that you are not sincere and you are just concerned about points on a paper instead of learning skill acquisition, which is the primary goal of these online courses. The Google Cloud Certification It is definitely worth putting course completion certificates on your CV or LinkedIn Monster, or Naukri.com profile, but you must be ready to show that you have enough knowledge to justify those certificates. If you fail to justify your certification with knowledge and experience upon your interview its a big negative, and for many of hiring managers, it's just the end of the interview. It all depends on . They are definitely valuable in terms of providing recognition, adding the keyword in your resume, and providing initial boots, but you just cannot get a job or start a career by using them. You need to have solid skills to back those certificates. whether course certificates from Udemy, Coursera, edX, and Udacity are valuable or not Another subtle thing I would like to mention about the . For example, in general, Coursera or Udacity certificates offered by , , , , or is much more valuable than a random certificate provided by some unknown author. value of a course certification is perception Google Microsoft AWS IBM Stamford University Don't get me wrong, you may be able to learn better on the other course, and that should be the primary goal, but companies like Google, AWS, Microsoft, IBM, , and Universities like Stanford, Michigan, and Hong Kong university enjoys a SalesForce lot of trust in the public's eye. Whenever you are associated with these big companies, people pay attention, and it can act as an affirmative vote for your Resume and profile. Having said that, never join an online course just for certificates, your primary goal should always be learning skills and improving yourself, documents are a by-product of that. I would, on any day, hire a Java Programmer who is an expert in coding, algorithms, Java, over a person who has completed a couple of online courses on , , , , Udacity, or any other online platform but cannot write a program involving a couple of classes. Which one is better? To help make this decision easier, I have chosen several factors to judge the two platforms on. Coursera vs. Udemy: Factors to Review Interface and Design Learning Approach Pricing and Financial Aid Languages Certificates Instructors 1. Interface and Design Udemy has a simple interface that is easy to navigate around. You can easily look for courses by clicking on the ‘Categories’ section. You can also find recommended courses by searching which is especially helpful considering the vast volume of courses Udemy has to offer. Coursera also provides a visually appealing design. The homepage instantly captures the readers’ attention by informing them about the various partner universities and organizations the company has collaborated with. There are lots of filtering options as well; you can filter courses by level, duration, language and price, among other options. Coursera lags behind Udemy in this regard, as it has 55 languages. However, the majority of the video lessons have an interactive transcript and this feature is mobile-friendly, unlike Udemy. 5. Certificates On Udemy, you’ll be able to earn a completion certificate once you have completed a course, provided it's a paid course. However, it will not be a formal, accredited certificate, so it wouldn’t hold a lot of weight with any potential employer. If you want an accredited certificate, you will need to pay a specific fee, depending on the type and length of the course you are studying. Coursera, meanwhile, provides verified that include the course name, instructor signature, logo of the partner institution, a statement by Coursera confirming the identity of the learner, and a verification URL allowing others to check the authenticity of the certificate. However, Coursera certificates not only require you to pay the full course fee, but also complete the course . Otherwise, you have to pay the full fee again to attain the course certificate. certificates within 180-days 6. Instructors Any experienced instructor can create courses on Udemy, as long as he/she completes the instructor identity . You can read a brief description of the instructors’ past experiences, see their ratings and reviews as well as the amount of courses they teach. You can also connect with them via social media in case of queries. verification process The instructors on Coursera, meanwhile, are professors from reputed universities and institutions. Each course is created in collaboration with its partnered institution to ensure maximum quality. An instructor rating is given in the course description, where you can also read his/her bio and prior experience. Udemy vs. Coursera, Which is Better? The final answer to the Udemy vs Coursera debate boils down to what you are looking for in an e-learning platform. Udemy’s main strength lies in its vast course availability. With such diversity in the subject matter of the courses, the opportunities for you to learn are limitless. If you have a specific non-academic interest like gymnastics or cooking, Udemy’s courses would serve you better. On the other hand, Coursera is the right platform for you if you have a particular academic interest like psychology, and want to learn it like it is taught at a university program. Monday Mornings with Entrepreneurs For the first interview of this series, we have with us Piotr Michalak who believes that his startup is going to outperform Wikipedia. So before starting your morning, pause for a coffee break ;) and enjoy this chit-chat with Piotr. Please tell our readers a bit about how you perceive success? Hello guys, and thank you for having me. Ever since my youngest days, I noticed people, e.g. my parents, work hard for little to no results, even lose their money, health, and happiness. Piotr: When I started doing business 16 years ago, I noticed no correlation between hours put into work and my accomplishments. It's not about how much you do, but if you do the right things and in the right way. That's when you realise that you need to be a wise and not just an educated person. So you may have noticed that it's more and more popular to complain about the current post-Prussian education system and how it doesn't prepare us for everyday life: day to day decision making, planning your life, finding your purpose, or even specific things like investing, building a house and solving marriage problems. "Success is not about what information you read on Wikipedia and learn at school." Do you think we live in the information era? Researchers say that the information era ended around the dot com burst around the year 2000, that is pre-iPhone (lol). Piotr: They say that we live in the knowledge age. So people who have the know-how to do specific things gain a competitive edge. But the wisdom age is coming up soon, and it's the wisest, not most educated, people that will win on each and every market and in life. Steve Jobs didn't have a better know-how of computer manufacturing. Still, he made sometimes wiser decisions (and sometimes not), and that's what really mattered for Apple and where it is today. But where is Google in this puzzle? It is still only useful while searching for information. You can't ask Google for an opinion or advice. Only other people can answer you. Piotr: It's people who create content, not Google. There is no place that would aggregate some more complicated questions and categorise them to help make this content evergreen and work for people worldwide via automated and curated translations. Quora and others don't do this either but generate even more online facebook-like chaos. Thus a need for ccFOUND was born. Wikipedia is organising encyclopedic information and knowledge. There is no place for opinions or controversy. There is no space for speculation or discussion. Piotr: As an expert, you have no way to build a community or monetise your experience. You are just an anonymous donor. However, Wikipedia is the most organised knowledge source on the Internet now. I'm really worried about the attention-grabbing algorithms implemented by most social media nowadays. Piotr: The movie "The Social Dilemma" was all about how the Internet now is no longer for exchanging information and knowledge but about grabbing people's attention. It makes us addicted to the service and then just uses people as a product to sell to advertisers. There's nothing wrong with businesses making money. Still, the original service should and could serve something more than just the lowest human instincts. Obviously, people want and need to watch funny videos with cats, and I do that too. But people also want and like to help each other online; they like getting and giving advice. People want to build genuine relationships and reputation; social media's current state doesn't help much with that. We are building a platform that will put users and experts first, not by treating them like numbers in a database in a dehumanized manner. Talking about the tech revolution, What do you make of the recent crypto surge? We knew about it and were ready for it. Informed investors know that the crypto market moves in 4-year cycles connected to Bitcoin halving. We have created the biggest publishing house for crypto investments in Poland in the last 4 years, so we had access to the best analysts and experts beforehand. Piotr: One great side effect of it is that after ccFOUND's private sale, we collected $1.3M at first, then kept $1M of it after taxes. Still, now this capital grew to $1.75M thanks to crypto allocation. What about other people? I can only wish everybody to exit at the right moment and buy back even more at the upcoming bear market, which obviously won't be possible for everybody. Roughly speaking, for every person who generates a positive ROI, someone else has to lose money, which's the unfortunate nature of markets and life. But even if you lose now, there will be another bull market in several years. How do you keep yourself and your team motivated during these tough times? Unfortunately, it's not a tough time for us, although I sympathise with all the people that lost their jobs or companies… Our Polish cryptocurrency publishing house grew 4x y/y during COVID. Then ccFOUND generated $1.3M with just 4 webinars and in 2 weeks. Piotr: Thanks to this, we've built a new 20+ person company and are preparing for a $100M+ crowdfunding campaign. That was my greatest desire, to create a company with a professional management team first and do business the right way. We also have an excellent school for kids here, so we somehow manage through COVID. On the other hand, it's tough to hire great developers. The IT market is booming, and we compete for talents with the likes of Google, Apple, and Microsoft, which is not easy. Thankfully we have a superb CTO. So I can only sympathise with the less fortunate and… I create an ecosystem to help people. What was the best advice you ever received? And did you follow it? It was my first business mentor who taught me to build companies in an organised manner. Piotr: He told me - create products, offers, develop procedures and processes… When there's a fire in the company, it means there was no process beforehand to take care of it, so learn from this and create a set of rules on how we do things so it doesn't happen again… It took me three years to implement his advice because of how our minds work: each of us has some kind of modality of how we live and operate. Changing these automated thinking habits just takes time. It's a matter of information flowing from the cerebral cortex into the reptilian brain or the limbic system. It takes from 1 to 3 years on average. But once I started hiring people, building a team, setting up the organisational rules, I became a financially free person first and then created something more significant. What advice would you give to those looking to become successful leaders? Nowadays, I tend to believe that roughly 80% of a company's success is connected to what market you choose. By that, I mean the product you decide to create and sell, for whom and where. Piotr: That also means which problems you will solve for your customers or what needs dreams, and desires you are trying to fulfill. That also means you understand people, what they need, what they are afraid of, what they like or dislike… So you have heard this before, that you need to have the vision to make people follow you. But to have strong convictions, you need to really to empathise with great insight about what's currently wrong in the world or where the world is headed. That's what I also did in ccFOUND, after many months of research and preparation, created a vision that has attracted the greatest talents I have ever worked with! It has some awsome courses to learn most popular technologies like , , , and more. Whether you want to learn a new technology or you’re preparing for interviews, this is a good website to check out. JavaScript Java Kubernetes Python All the courses feature in-browser coding environments, meaning there’s no setup required. They’re complete with quizzes and challenges to further test your understanding of the material. Over the past year I helped a lot of people learn and even made a few bucks in the process. A few unexpected things happened as well. So here’s the story of my 17+ months as a Udemy instructor. I got started in early 2017 — spending evenings and weekends recording a tech class about Google Chrome Developer Tools. It was a subject that I knew deeply, and, after purchasing a few of the top sellers on the subject, I knew that I could produce a course that would be significantly more detailed. So I dropped a few hundred bucks on equipment (a nice microphone and some ), and also decided to run a promotion to help get early reviews. I would donate $10 to for the first fifty written reviews. Improving Production Values While I stand behind the content of my first course as some of the best instruction available for Chrome Developer Tools, some of the production values definitely needed some work. There was poor lighting, uneven audio quality, and plenty of video of me looking unkempt and unshaven ;-). For this go around, I purchased some better lighting, a green screen, [and a razor], and took a course on to improve my video editing skills. I also decided that I would be an on-camera talking head for the entire course. Trust me — it is really hard to code live on camera, but with some practice and editing frustration, I believe I’ve created a something that will lead to much higher student engagement. Screenflow the makeshift recording studio (my 1 year old son’s crib gets the other half of the room) Producing this course went over my time budget. I had hoped that I could complete it in two full work-weeks, but alas, the finished product took five weeks or more. This course was harder to produce than the Developer Tools course because I needed to create projects from start-to-finish, rather than simply stepping through the UI of a known tool. DeepLearning A-Z on Udemy provided by folks at superdatascience.com is a 23 hour rigorous course which splits the course into 3 parts : Supervised learning(ANN,CNN,RNN), Unsupervised Learning( SOM, Boltzmann Machines, Autoencoders) and some basic ML referesher and data preprocssing techniques and templates. Applied AI with Deep Learning by IBM is focused more towards the IoT/ production level design of deep learning systems with introduction to various frameworks like deeplearning4j, systemml and tools like Apache Spark and IBM Bluemix platform which makes exploring deep learning on real time data. Udacity’s Deep Learning Nanodegree covers everything from NN to GANS and previously was marketed as a foundations course but they added Reinforcement Learning and dropped the former name. Andrew Ng has provided some cool Ipython notebooks but I must say, the assignments are not at all intuitive. Udemy course provides some very hands on intuitive level assignments/explanation where the tutor explains each and every line of the code which does help if your theory is on point. IBM’s course provides weird yet interesting assignments as they try to bring IBM Watson platform and big data aspect into real time production level assignments but are poorly explained/structured with weird UX around IBM platform. Verdict:- If you like someone explaining all the code, Udemy assignments are very good. You want your code to be reviewed/mentorship — Udacity is bang on. For everything else, there is Coursera. ime 3) T S — Students are at an advantage for they can easily pace out the courses over time. Coursera 4 week courses if done properly hardly take a week if you are clear with your math fundamentals. Udacity has much more to offer in terms of mini assignments and longer syllabus which justifies its ask of 8–10 hours per week. IBM course is very swift but it covers very less things. Udemy course is around 23 hours runtime which clearly takes atleast 2 weeks to finish. P — All the courses are also kept keeping professionals in mind. Udacity has some deadline based projects so you kinda have to keep up. But burning the midnight oil everyday is better than chugging through the whole content over the weekend for you will forget it the next week. Verdict:- Coursera is value for time, Udemy is self paced but might be frightening at times. Udacity is not for the faint-hearted if you are not well versed with its prerequisites of math and python ntuition 4) I Andrew Ng covers the underlying math in a much much better way than all of the tutors but at times it proves to be counter intuitive if you like coding and hacking your way through it. Udemy course covers both code logic and tech intuition in a nice and precise way but visually is unappealing.They also provide links to research papers to read which can be used as supplementary material to strengthen your knowledge on a particular topic. Udacity content is very intuitive though they provide some write ups and math below their videos, some math intensive sessions (RNN) surely are snoozeworthy.( Important, yet snoozyy) IBM course gives you an idea about IoT and production level deep learning with its very basic and intuitive videos which are good if you are looking to quickly try and build something without going into the grittiness of deep learning. That’s not what she said… Verdict:- I personally found Udacity content to have cleared a lot of mydoubts, but then Udemy clears your coding intuition and Andrew Ng’s lectures though less intuitive but are necessary if you re looking to understand how everything works. You can choose to go for Udemy if your aim is to prototype rapidly and learn intuitively only. ontent 5) C Andrew Ng’s content is very standard and it feels as if you are sitting in a classroom and your professor is breaking down each and every difficult concept into simpler terms. Udacity’s content is graphically attractive and doesn’t make you sleep( RL and RNN will) coupled with special content by Andrew Trask, Ian Goodfellow and Sebastian Thrun keeps things interesting from time to time. SuperDataScience team has come up with their hit A-Z series in many verticals of AI/ML/DL and though their slides are not a visual treat, their content is precise and inclined more towards the practical aspect. They provide some very cool templates which are heavily reusable if you plan to experiment. IBM content is a bit hasty I would say, the varied pace at which different instructors go and the accent of the main tutor is sometimes very difficult to comprehend without subtitles. Verdict:- Udacity — Yayyyy, Udemy — Yayyy, DeepLearning.ai — Yayy, IBM — Yay upport 6) S I’d say Udacity’s 60% fees might be justified for the support they provide. Slack channels, weekly office hours, live webinars with top scholars, mentors to help you out with code and logical errors and portfolio building skills make taking a mooc a very wholesome experience. Coursera and Udemy have support forums where you can discuss with your fellow classmates or reach out to TAs but then it depends on how much grasping power you have. Better the support, Better the understanding.I personally got frustrated with the IBM course as the assignments are so rigid I almost gave it up at one point just because I was copy pasting wrong json file. Verdict:- Udacity takes the cake and justifies its price in this segment FINAL VERDICT Its one thing to download tutorial videos and other thing to take an actual course. I have had like 30–40 gb worth of tutorials ranging from Game Theory to How To Make Delicious Pastas and I still eat instant pasta packets. I’m about 45 days in to my online teaching experiment with Udemy, and this article chronicles what I’ve learned about teaching, marketing and the meaning of life in the process. Every day I’m hustlin’ — Rick Ross Learning with Udemy A few months ago, I took my first online class at , by a little shop called . It was a full class about game development on the Unity platform. I thought it was a great value for the money. I think I paid $19 for a 35 hour class. Udemy AwesomeTuts Great Class After that class, I was able to develop and (nearly) ship a 2D iPhone game similar to Missile Command! So I got to thinking, I’ve given a couple of — why can’t I monetize the thing that I’m great at? (In my case, it’s ). conference talks Google Chrome Developer Tools I wanted to see what was already available, so I searched for and purchased the five other classes on the subject. They were good intro classes, but I knew I could create something that was significantly more comprehensive. Becoming an Instructor So I took the plunge and clicked “Become an Instructor”. That night, I brought my headset home from work and recorded and uploaded a sample video to Udemy about why I was excited to teach about Chrome Devtools. The lighting sucked and the sound was tinny, but I took a “get it done” attitude. My first attempt will never be the greatest, but it’s a starting place. My Sample Video I got approved the next day, with a bunch of suggestions about how to produce videos better. Perfect. Gearing Up I didn’t want 40 hours of production work to sound like crap, so I bought the Blue Yeti Microphone that Udemy suggests. I also invested in Screenflow for my screencasting software. The total cost was about $200. Learning from Others There’s a gold rush out there, and lots of people willing to sell you pickaxes. But I wanted to get some good tips on releasing a course, so I picked up a class on making classes (so meta!) that I thought was real and not over-produced. Nice Class on Course Creation from RW Studio was a good class. The biggest takeaway was to leapfrog the competition and create a course that is significantly better / longer / better produced. The Udemy Course Creation & Marketing Blueprint The second takeaway is that . Don’t look at a $100 class and assume that because it has 14,000 students that the instructor is making $1.4mil :-). everyone gets a discount The final takeaway is that you need to do some of your own marketing to jumpstart your class. Five good reviews will probably get you on the “New and Noteworthy” section in your category. Some advice that I question was to dump free coupon codes on various sites. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’d rather get quality students on my premium class than people that just collect courses. (I eventually chose to produce a totally free class instead and use that student list as an opportunity for marketing). Podcast I also listen to a podcast called by Phil Ebiner, one Udemy’s top instructors. This was nice, because it has interviews with other top producers, and it was easy to listen to on-the-go. (I recommend skipping the first episode and going straight to the interview episodes). Online Course Masters Email Remember that first class that I took on Udemy about game development? I was able to find the guy’s email address (his name is Fahir), and I asked him a few questions about his experience. I got some decent advice on the amount of money I could expect to make (a few thousand a month if you have good courses), and other platforms where you can monetize your content. If software development teaches you anything, it’s that you’re gonna do things inefficiently or the first time around. It is an iterative process. Here are things that I could improve upon the next time: just plain wrong Mistakes in Production Again I took a “get it done” approach and came up with my topics and started recording as quickly as possible. But had I come up with a full outline first, I probably could have made the course flow a little bit better. I wish I would have come up with a better outline at the start. I produced some video clips designed to get people to do reviews right away, and I made a pledge to donate $10 to for each of the first fifty written reviews that the class receives. That left me with about 15 reviews a few days in (all five stars, except for my mom who gave me a 4.5 ), and yep! I made it to the new & notable page. Huzzah! OUCH woot! Outside of my inner circle, I decided to hand out free coupons. I’m still unsure whether that strategy was the best one. The other courses on the subject have tons more students (social proof). I’m going to wait it out and see how organic growth goes. not First Sale I made my first two sales on day one (organic sales from the Udemy website). Talk about a rush. I have attempted launching several other projects in the past, and I have never made a buck on my first day. Each of those sales were $10, and Udemy gets half. But , so this seems totally fair. The articles published there have gotten a bit more traction than the ones I self publish! I’d recommend using Medium and then to get more views.
