Home workout trends have evolved alongside technology, from videos on tape to streamed sessions incorporating biometrics monitoring. Developed with a data-centric approach to fitness, users refer to as the world’s smartest home gym and personal trainer for good reason. The company is reimagining the modern at-home workout experience by offering strength training via a compact, wall-mounted device that adapts to meet each user’s fitness ability. Tonal Launched in 2018, the Tonal strength-training system uses electromagnetic resistance to simulate various weights and dynamically adjusts throughout the workout based on the user’s performance and historical data. Video displays directly on the Android-based device, which also provides access to personal training sessions and recommended workouts. While content was initially only available on-demand because of the complexities of its unique workouts, Tonal is introducing live class options this fall. Rising interest from coaches and users spurred development of the new offering, which is made possible by managed live streaming service (Amazon IVS). Amazon Interactive Video Service Tonal Director of Content Engineering Scott White was up and running with Amazon IVS on day one, and within three days he had integrated with Tonal software. He shared, “When evaluating livestreaming service providers, Amazon IVS stood out for how it includes metadata in the stream. This feature is critically important for us to deliver Tonal’s signature workouts live, and we were able to figure out how to use it quickly. Our team already uses AWS services, like Amazon S3 for storage, so the process was very familiar; we just entered a couple keys, hit the API, and we were up and running.” Unlike mapping storyboards for cardio-focused workouts, delivering live strength training workouts requires a more nuanced approach, since timing often varies. As users progress through sets, they may tire or need a water break; the Tonal design accounts for these points of unpredictability. To ensure participants stay engaged and motivated, relevant data appears on screen, such as feedback on their form, when they met a goal, when they set new personal records (PRs), and encouragement from fellow class members as emoji-like kudos. Using Amazon IVS and harnessing its metadata capabilities, Tonal preserves and translates all the elements of its personalized workouts into the live format. Once complete, Tonal adds the recording of the live workout to the on-demand archive. Before rolling out the new feature widely, Tonal previewed live workouts with a select group of users and received enthusiastic feedback around the interactive element. Noted White, “Our beta testers loved getting to see the proper form and pace of each exercise with the instructor in real time, and felt motivated to push harder in their workouts.” In fine-tuning the integration, the Tonal team collaborated with the Amazon IVS service team to help navigate Tonal’s unique livestream implementation. As an example, Tonal’s wall mounted device required a 9×16 portrait mode display versus the standard 16×9 landscape format. “The Tonal device screen is orientated to portrait mode, so the stream needed to be delivered in that format at the right resolution to provide a good customer experience,” White explained. “We had excellent support from the Amazon IVS team, and that helped make for a very smooth integration process.” Like the on-demand classes, Tonal streams live workouts from a well-equipped production studio. Coaches focus on demonstrating movements and leading workouts from their own Tonal stations, and producers, who monitor incoming data from user systems, feed them data-informed cues from user systems, such as milestones or PR achievements. Producers also track workout progress and inject timed metadata into the stream when the coach transitions to a new movement, keeping the Tonal systems and livestream in sync, and advising the system of where users are in the workout routine. “With Amazon IVS, we’ve translated the Tonal experience–delivering personalized strength training though intelligent technology–into a live group setting, quickly, reliably and ready to scale,” White concluded.

The t-SNE plots generally align with geographical disposition, accents from Nigeria (Orange) are closer in vector space to Ghana (blue) but further from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and South Africa likely reflecting the distinct languages spoken across these countries. However, where similar languages (e.g. Swahili) are spoken across countries (e.g. Botswana and South Africa), the spatial distinction is less apparent. Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania cluster together while Botswana and South Africa cluster together and Rwandan embeddings fall between both regions. This demonstrates that the learned embeddings do encode some geographical information extracted entirely from speech and accent labels. Accent disposition: In Figure 8, Ghanaian accents - Twi and Akan (Fante), cluster closer together and are distinct from Nigerian neighbors. South African accents Zulu, Afrikaans, and Tswana cluster together. Similarly, Kinyarwanda, Luganda, Luganda, Swahili, Luhya and other East African accents cluster together. In Nigeria, Northern accents Hausa and Fulani cluster together and are closer to middle belt accents than South-Eastern and South-Western Nigerian accents. Peripheral West African Clusters: Figure 3 shows a distinct pattern in the Nigerian accents. There are 10 distinct peripheral subclusters surrounding a more homogenous core. These may represent accents with very distinct linguistic or tonal characteristics from various parts of the country. Some of these accents include Okirika, Bajju, Brass, Agatu, Eggon, Mada, Ikulu Hausa and Urobo. Dual Accents: Figure 4 shows a really interesting phenomenon with speakers with self-reported dual accents. Sample embeddings for dual accents "Igbo and Yoruba" (orange) fall between the Igbo (blue) and Yoruba (green) clusters. Although Yoruba (green) and Hausa (red) are very distinct accents, speakers with dual accents (purple) fall somewhat between both clusters. This trend is consistent with Yoruba/Hausa and Hausa/Fulani accents. 4.1 Contrasting with the Ethnologue According to Ethnologue (Campbell, 2008) there are 7,151 living human languages distributed in 142 different language families, 6 of which are assigned to Africa, based on historically accepted language ancestry. Although the empirically learned embeddings generally support this classification, they reveal 2 interesting possibilities that remain uncharacterized by the Ethnologue. Kwa-Bantu Relationship: Although the Ghanaian Kwa languages are traditionally separated from the Bantu languages in South Africa and are geographically very distant, our embeddings suggest they may be more similar than earlier proposed and possibly share similar ancestry. This line of reasoning is supported by Güldemann (2018) reclassification of African languages. Niger-Congo Subfamilies. Although there have been attempts to better categorize the large NigerCongo family, Güldemann (2018)’s work, based on basic classificatory units and genealogical relations, rethinks traditional classification. The spatial disposition shown in Figure 9 also suggests possible sub-families based on speech representations empirically learned by optimizing the MTL objective function. 4.2 Accent Normalization and Re-identification User reported accents are sometimes noisy. In the Afrispeech dataset, we encountered 4 strange accent labels where their groupings shed more light on possible true accent labels. 11 speakers located in Nigeria reported their accent as “English”. Although the centroid for this group is closest to the “Berom" accent, all samples for this group fall within clusters occupied by speakers from Southeastern Nigeria. Another group of 20 speakers reported a “pidgin” accent. Embedding for speech for speakers are nearest to clusters from Ijaw, Delta, Edo, and other Nigerian accents where pidgin accent is prevalent. 2 speakers self-identified their accents as “South African English”. However embeddings are closest to Afrikaans speakers. Embeddings for a group of “Portugese” speakers located in South Africa also fall very close to Zulu and Tswana, both south African accents. Underneath all the cocaine jokes, the 4th wall-breaking moments, and the over-the-top violence, this movie is very sweet and sincere, and it feels like a genuine goodbye letter to the 20th Century Fox/Marvel era. I still remember that feeling like it was yesterday. I walked into the conference room. It was the first time I ever had to present in a professional setting. I was scared sh*tless. I started speaking. And….. no one even looked my way. It was like I didn't even exist. Just invisible. The loud extroverts in the room quickly chimed in - dominated the discussion as usual. My little thoughts  disappeared into the void, dismissed without consideration. I sat down feeling crushed and deflated. Like I’d never be able to truly influence and present and make ideas really stick no matter how hard I tried. Some people had it so easy. Why did some people have the ability to walk into the room and just command respect? Well lucky for you. Over the course of my career, I’ve gotten significantly better at influencing, teaching, presenting, and communicating and I took a moment this week to codify some of my beliefs and learnings on the art of influence. Looking back, that early sense of hopelessness and inability to influence was simply a limiting belief born out of inexperience and lack of confidence. My ‘inability to ever influence anyone’ was just a story I told myself. A limiting belief born of inexperience. The truth I've come to realize is that with some effort, anyone can learn to establish a presence and take charge in any situation. I've learned to shape opinions and perspectives through finesse, subtlety, and nuance - not force or aggression. Nonverbals. Reading the room. Sending the right signals. Mastering these unspoken rules allowed my influence to grow exponentially. I went from passive participant to active leader. So here is what I learnt: How to sway conversations. Make your voice matter. Even become the most valuable person at the table. Let me break down the techniques I’ve learnt. Adopt an Empowered Mindset Ok - bear with me. I know that you were expecting hard tactics, but for the most common fear in the world (public speaking), isn’t just a nice to have, it’s a need to have. mindset Remember, the foundation of influence isn't manipulative tactics or smooth talking. It starts with genuine self-confidence and care for others. "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." - Henry Ford Your beliefs become self-fulfilling prophecies. Choose to believe in your inherent worth and ability to contribute value. The most impactful influencers uplift others too. Their confidence stems from service, not self-interest. Each day ask yourself: "How can I empower the people around me?" Forget about trying to protect your own ego. This flows over into your communication style, which inadvertently, influences. Don't accept narratives like: I'm too young/inexperienced/quiet to make an impact No one cares what I have to say I should just keep my head down It’s normal to experience these without experience, however, the goal is to get you thinking like this from day 1. These stories vanish the moment you refuse to buy into them anymore. I start each day by setting very specific personal intentions to: Add value to every interaction Uplift others Share my perspective Mindfulness cements your beliefs. Confidence is a practice. Meditate on your capabilities. Master Your Physical Presence Body language is more powerful than words. Here are some very basic techniques I’ve found to command respect and presence. – Expansive postures increase confidence hormones. You'll feel more empowered. Straighten your back, Square your shoulders – Arrive early to claim this power position. It signals confidence and capability (also arriving early is just a good practice). Sit at the head of the table – Take center stage. Shrinking away will fade you into the background. Stand tall – It builds connections and trust. Darting eyes convey anxiety. Make steady eye contact – Don't retreat when all eyes turn your way. Embrace the spotlight. Lean into it. Own your space without dominating discussions. Wield these nonverbals to shape experiences Presence is power. Use it judiciously by staying centered in service to others. Don't get drunk on positional authority - you’ll just come across as an asshole. Listen Deeply Want to cultivate serious influence? Learn to listen first. I know this isn’t always practical, but if you can - offer to set the agenda, or at least understand the agenda (if you’re not setting it), so you can prepare properly. Side note: I’m a firm believer that if a meeting doesn’t have an agenda - we aren’t having a meeting. Setting an agenda ahead of time is a must-have when we’re sitting down. Don't just react to the agenda - envision and create the dialogue you want to see. Planning is power. Share Your Perspective Don't wait to be called on. Provide your view early and often. "The most powerful person is often the one willing to upset the status quo." - Stone, Patton and Heen Share your perspective early and make your voice heard. As the saying goes, the most powerful person is often willing to constructively disrupt the status quo. Some good entry points: "Building on what [X] said earlier..." "I have a slightly different take on this..." "That's a compelling viewpoint. Another angle is..." The more you add your wisdom early with care and empathy, the more your influence builds. Speak your truth but make people think, not go on the defensive. Keep sharing your perspective. Don't hold back until too late in the conversation. Help guide the direction. Just take care to do so in a thoughtful, constructive way. Adapt to Your Audience Insightful communicators tailor their style to individuals and environments. "To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world." - Patrick King Be cognizant of others' perspectives, not just your own. Use that understanding to adapt your communication. Here are some techniques: - Match body language, vocal pacing, and tonality to build intuitive rapport with others. Internalize Confidence One last mindset hack. You don’t need external validation to internalize confidence. Repeat that 10 times. Let it sink in. Your worth isn’t defined by: Job titles Achievements Salary Degrees Other’s approval Those are merely of confidence. Not the source. reflections Access it by: The source lies within. Revisiting your core values Connecting to your purpose Recalling your key strengths Holding your head high When you know your worth, it doesn’t need external validation. You’ll act with assurance regardless of position or approval. Synthesize Your Skills True influence requires more than specific tactics. It means blending confidence with compassion.
