According to the conducted among 90,000 developers worldwide, Ruby and Python were in the Top 15 most in-demand programming languages in 2019. It’s quite something considering that there are about 700 programming languages in the world! Stack Overflow’s annual survey Source: StackOverflow Developer Survey, 2019 Ruby and Python have a lot in common. They are high-level object-oriented languages focused on simplicity and clarity. However, as you may have already guessed from the title, today we are going to compare these scripting languages and figure out which one is better for your web app development project. Let's start with basic information about Ruby and Python before proceeding with their comparison. Ruby Ruby was released in 1995. Yukihiro Matsumoto, Ruby’s founder said: “The goal of Ruby is to make programmers happy.” Ruby was designed as a dynamic developer-friendly language. It’s also a highly flexible language that allows developers to easily alter its elements and combine different approaches in powerful ways. The recent Coronavirus outbreak has alarmed world markets and we are starting to see a reaction. Disquieting signs of an economic downturn are now rearing their ugly heads. Central banks across the globe are presiding over negative interest rates. A shaky Repo market has required the Fed to pump billions of dollars in on a daily basis. Quantitative easing has started up again under the guise of the Fed buying stocks with their seemingly never-ending printed money. What goes up must come down, and a bear market must appear sooner or later. Traditionally, money coming out of a plummeting stock market usually finds its way into precious metals such as gold or silver. History suggests that precious metals will certainly gain in value during this time. Nevertheless, buying gold and silver has fundamentally just served as a way to store and hold value until things improve in the stock market. That is until now… Gold and silver, hard money for millennia, can once again become a means of payment Gold is not just a store of value and although nearly 80% of gold ends up being manufactured into jewelry, use cases in industry are also leading to higher demand — uses in industries such as electronics, computers, dentistry, medicine, and aerospace are helping to perpetuate the demand for gold. It’s all very well having a portion of your wealth in some bomb-proof vault in Switzerland but releasing that value immediately in order to take advantage of a particular buying opportunity is just not feasible. Therein lies one of the huge disadvantages of hedging into precious metals — they are sluggish to move in and out of. That is until blockchain enabled the fractionalising of commodities such as precious metals. The advent of blockchain is revolutionising many industries. The advantages of immutability, security and transparency are enabling blockchain to disrupt and vastly change these industries. The precious metals sector is also ripe for disruption and the potential for putting gold and silver on the blockchain is simply huge. Fractionalising and releasing the value of gold and silver on the blockchain Several blockchain startups have already identified the opportunity here and have already entered the precious metals arena. In order to elaborate further on the possibilities, I’ve outlined some of these ventures here: Lode — Put Your Idle Silver to Work seeks to restore silver as a means of payment just as it has been for centuries. In the present time, silver, just as it is with gold, is stored in a vault or is securely kept on an owner’s premises. Many people around the world ‘stack’ silver — looking for a safe financial hedge. However, its value is locked up for some future event and until that event, it is just a value that is unable to be easily liquidated and utilised. Lode That is until now… Lode has 2 forms of value on its platform — the LODE token is like a digital receipt for a customer’s silver, which is stored in a Lode secure vault. The AGX token is like a stable representation of exactly one gram of silver held in the vaulted Lode silver bullion reserves. A client either contributes silver or buys it and it is then securely held in the Lode bullion reserves. In short, the client is using their own silver to purchase a financial instrument which generates a passive income in the form of digital silver (AGX). Of course, the client also has the right to withdraw their AGX at any time should they request it, in a minimum amount of 1000 ounces (amount to be reduced in the future). The AGX coin is also how you spend your silver. In total contrast to actual physical silver, the AGX coin can be spent speedily, at low cost and privately without any middlemen. AGX coins can be spent by way of POS, apps, ATM networks, debit cards and exchanges. Each transaction is notarised on the blockchain and is transparent and immutable. Silver has always been a successful means of payment throughout millennia and given the problems that fiat currency is facing in these uncertain times, a return to real money in the form of silver-backed digital money is a proposition that makes absolute sense and has every chance of succeeding. It does this by linking the traditional world of gold with the cutting edge, high tech world of crypto. This acts to draw together the third parties involved in verifying and securing the token minting process. The DGX token can be held as a representation of physical gold or spent through the use of partner digital wallets or exchanges etc. The Digix eco-system uses 2 tokens. So besides the DGX token there is also the DGD token which is used in order to participate in decentralised governance. This enables holders to have a say in the future direction of Digix and to help push adoption. Holders of DGD can submit proposals to further the aims of the eco-system and can also vote on proposals submitted by others. Points are accrued by active participants and these can be exchanged for ‘rewards’. Vaultoro — bridging the gap between cryptocurrency and gold Bitcoin and gold are increasingly seen as having similar characteristics. They have their own store of value outside of a fiat ecosystem backed by debt and thin air. However, up to now, it hasn’t been easy to trade between the two. Bitcoin is such a nascent asset that volatility does make it an extremely complex and risky trade. Investors and traders generally use a stable coin such as Tether in an attempt to avoid the downturns and to peg their investment to the relative security of the US dollar. Tether has its own issues of trust and reliability so more and more stable coins are entering the arena, giving their own cases for preferred use. However, they are all paired with fiat which has its own trust issues. The enables customers to immediately transfer out of bitcoin and into gold, thereby providing the ultimate safe peg. When bitcoin is making one of its strong swings to the upside clients can take this trade by buying into this volatile asset. What is the point of hedging out of the dollar? I won’t go into the manifold reasons as to why we should be thinking about withdrawing from our fiat currencies — there are many economists who can do that far better than I can. What I will say though is that most will not be aware of a crash until it happens, it’s only then that the average investor will look for the safe haven of precious metals. Another challenge can be that of trust. It will take a real change of mindset for a lot of people to change what they are presently doing with precious metals. So many people either stack precious metals at home or store them in a bank vault. Tokenisation of assets on the blockchain is a relatively new concept and even though ‘trust’ is one of the raisons d’etre for blockchain, many will not see it this way and will wait for others to blaze this path. Finally, one more reason for not using crypto/precious metal platforms is that perhaps the common investor is just not ready to embrace this technology yet. Investing in gold and silver is maybe more for the careful financial plodder who doesn’t want to complicate matters with technology — no matter the numerous financial advantages on offer. To conclude… A financial ‘reset’ could well be on the cards, even in the relatively short term of the next few years. History teaches us that all fiat currencies fail at some point. Fiat currency will not endure into the foreseeable future — it has nothing behind it except the power and influence of governments and their central banks. This power is on the wane and a time of reckoning is nearing as the debt burden becomes ever more pressing. Technology continues to advance and the digital age is well upon us. Governments are beginning to recognise the advantages of digital currency but they will need to back these currencies with something more tangible than promises that have proven to be more air than substance. The two foremost precious metals of gold and silver have served civilisation for millennia and now they are making a return in the form of hard money backing of ‘trustless’ digital currencies. What we have missed over the last century is this trust, and the immutability of blockchain is serving to combine tradition and technology for a currency system that will last the ages. Forward-thinking platforms such as Lode, Digix and Vaultoro, are the forerunners of the new digital age and it could be expected that they succeed in shaping the currency system of the future. Understanding Chrome V8 — Chapter 1：Checkout, Build, Run V8 

We’re going to write a new smart contract in Michelson using a string passed in the parameter by the user that we'll concatenate to the string already present in the storage before saving the new string into the storage. (Part 1 is available here .) After introducing the basics of Michelson in the previous article, we’re going to continue our exploration of this programming language. In this new installment, we’re introducing an amazing tool that’ll help us write, debug, and examine our Michelson code: the developed by the . Jupyter notebook with the Michelson kernel Baking Bad team We’re going to write a new smart contract in Michelson using a string passed in the parameter by the user that we'll concatenate to the string already present in the storage before saving the new string into the storage. It’s highly recommended to read first, as it introduces concepts about smart contracts in Michelson we’re going to use here. Part 1 But first, let’s have a look at what’s probably the best tool around to code: Michelson! Baking Bad’s Jupyter Notebook Baking Bad developed an online Michelson compiler that goes beyond compiling your Michelson code. It offers syntax highlighting, debugging, and a step-by-step visualization of the stack. You can open the notebook we’re going to use for this lesson using (bear in mind the kernel needs a minute or two to load) before selecting the file. this link MichelsonTutorial-Demo3.ipynb The file is divided into two parts: The inline code In the first part, the whole smart contract is dropped into a single cell. You can compile and run it by writing in the following cell. RUN %default parameter storage After running the smart contract, there’s a detailed description of each step and what each instruction did to modify the stack (in on the picture). At the end of the runtime (in on the picture), you’re left with your new storage. In [10] Out [10] The step-by-step code Where this compiler shines is you can enter the instructions to modify the stack one by one and examine their effect after each step. As in every Michelson smart contract, you start by specifying the parameter and the storage. Then, you type to start the execution. BEGIN parameter storage After this configuration step, you can enter the instructions one by one and run them by hitting to see how they modify the stack. In the cell, you’re presented with the current value at the top of the stack. CMD/CTRL + SHIFT Out [...] you can see a instruction in the step-by-step code. This is Michelson — this is just an instruction used in the Jupyter notebooks to print the current state of the stack. Note: DUMP not When you want to end the execution of the smart contract, you enter , and it’ll return the new storage, provided there’s no error in your code. If there’s one at any step of the execution, you’ll see a message and be able to fix it right away without having to review your code line by line. COMMIT Handling Parameters in a Michelson Smart Contract In the last lesson, we introduced a few instructions that manipulated data either already in the stack or that we pushed ourselves. But what about handling users’ input? This is actually pretty easy! We’re going to work with the contract present in the Jupyter notebook introduced above. You’re welcome to follow along in the notebook and run the instructions one by one to get a better understanding of how the stack looks like after each instruction. Here’s the full smart contract: If you remember, a pair containing the parameter and the storage is automatically pushed at the top of the stack when the contract is called. We can then get the left part of the pair (the parameter) and use it. Here’s how it works. First, let’s initialize our stack: In this step, we get a fresh stack with a pair containing a parameter of type ( ) and the storage of type , too ( ). Our final goal is to concatenate these two strings and return them. string world string Hello In the next step, we duplicate the top element of the stack because we need the parameter and the storage in two separate elements of the stack to be able to put them together in one single string. Michelson doesn’t have variables and is immutable by nature. New elements of the stack can be created with different methods — for example, by pushing them (with the instruction) or by duplicating them (with the instruction). Remember at every step of the execution, you’re dealing with the top element of the stack. It’s the only one you can work with. PUSH DUP Let’s start with the first element of the stack, and let’s get the parameter out of the pair. We use the instruction, whose purpose is to break an element of type and to return the left side of the pair (in this case, the parameter passed to the smart contract). After running , we’re left with the string on top of the stack. CAR pair CAR world Now you may be wondering: How can I work with the second element of the stack if Michelson only deals with the first one? It’s very easy! Bring the second element to the top with the instruction, and keep the other one for later. SWAP When using the instruction, you tell Michelson: “I don’t need the first element for now, but I’d like to work on the second one.” Michelson will bring down the first element to the second position and the second element up to the first position. SWAP Now that the second pair we duplicated at the beginning is at the top, we can use a reverse to get the right part of the pair with the instruction. CAR CDR The instruction works like the instruction, but you’ll keep the right side of the pair you’re manipulating (a pair always contains only two elements, so and are the only possible operations). After that, you can see our stack is made of two elements: in the first position, the string and in the second position, the string . CDR CAR CDR CAR Hello world Now let’s put them together! In computer programming, the operation of putting two strings together is called It’s only logical that the instruction to put two strings together in Michelson is called . The operation takes the two strings currently at the top of the stack and returns a single string. For the operation to be successful, two conditions must be true: concatenation . CONCAT You do have two elements on top of the stack (it’ll generate an error if there’s only one element left). If more elements are present, it’ll only deal with the two elements at the top. The two elements on top of the stack are strings (Michelson is strictly typed — it knows what kind of values it has in its stack, so don’t even try to fool it) Now if you remember what we talked about in Part 1, you know what’s going to happen. We must create a pair with a list and the new storage to end the execution of the smart contract (it’s like saying goodbye in Michelson). First, let’s push an empty list on the top of the stack: Once the empty list is there, we can create a pair with the empty list and the string: Once again, be very wary of the order of your elements and their type: Michelson will take the first element to put it on the left side of the pair and the second element to put it on the right side of the pair. Returning a pair of type (Pair string list (operation)) will generate an error. Now our stack is clean and contains a pair with a list of operations and a string, the execution of the smart contract comes to an end. Q1 - Tell us something about your background(s). I am a distributed database engineer by heart and have been in the database space for over a decade, focusing on building highly reliable distributed systems and databases. I started my journey with Apache Cassandra back in 2012 with version 0.7 with its thrift-based Hector client and I got to spend quite a reasonable amount of time with Nate McCall. I have come to Apache Cassandra and distributed databases ecosystem from relational databases world, so it is a pretty different mindset and experience building a different kind of monolith and microservices at webscale. I joined Netflix in 2014 to help build the company’s open-source Apache Cassandra ‘muscle’ and provide expertise in microservices with scalable persistence layers. Today, the company uses Apache Cassandra heavily to satisfy its ever-growing persistence needs. Q2 - Imagine if you accidentally walked into a FinTech meet and had to explain Apache Cassandra to someone there. How would you do that? I would say Apache Cassandra is high-frequency trading (HFT) ready in terms of availability, scale, and performance. You never have to think about planned downtimes for upgrades, rollouts, and unplanned outages; you just have to plan your consistency needs appropriately. Q3 - Apache Cassandra is ‘Highly Available, Eventually Consistent database.’ What do you mean by that in terms regular joes can understand? Well, to put it simply, your database is there when you need it most and answers the questions with the same accuracy every time. Cassandra has no single point of failure as it automatically replicates to multiple nodes across data centers, making it highly available. The trade-off is some latencies in read to write performance, which means data is eventually consistent. However, you can tweak it to operate as tunable consistent for specific reads and writes. Q4 - Why do you think that ‘Zero Copy’ streaming was not an option in the earlier days? Yes, Zero Copy streaming for faster scaling operations is a great feature. When I heard about streaming in Apache Cassandra 4.0, the first thing that came to my mind was, “Why did we not do it in the first place?” This feature certainly makes C* operations much easier and tractible for large-scale deployments. The ability for nodes to stream data between each other in their clusters via SSTables makes it a comfortable fit for Kubernetes and cloud environments. Q5 - Who’s got the most intricately designed technology stack in the world, in your opinion? Every company has a unique challenge to solve, and I find the core systems that solve these tough and unique problems always have an interesting way of approaching them. I can’t speak to the approach by other companies, but at Netflix, we question our architectural assumptions and dependencies constantly. Most recently, we’ve discussed our approach to distributed tracing infrastructure, and you can read about that here . Questioning our assumptions ensures that we are always on top of our technology stack’s performance, efficiency, and scalability. One of the recent outcomes of such questioning was to raise the level of abstractions for our developers (and you can read about the on the Netflix TechBlog). Bulldozer self-serve data platform We have decades of experience operating high-performance and scalable datastores, such as Apache Cassandra. This knowledge has enabled us to build higher-level abstractions on top of data store compositions, which has resulted in increased developer velocity and optimized data store access patterns.
