Earlier this year, investors warned startups to "prepare for the worst." Due to the global financial crisis, the looming recession, and the war in Ukraine, no one expected to see large rounds. And yet, startups continue to innovate and even manage to support their Ukrainian friends, who found themselves in the worst of the crisis. With support from the international community, Ukrainian-founded startups keep raising money, keep winning grants, and bring their ideas to all corners of the world. Among Ukraine supporters, there’s New York-based firm . It launched a $50 million fund to specifically support startups founded in Ukraine. Amazon Web Services has recently provided 52 Ukrainian startups with nearly $1 million worth of credits for using its cloud-computing services. More than 30 Ukraine-founded startups have received up to $75,000 from Google’s $5 million fund created in March to support Ukraine. ffVC The war was supposed to sever ties between Ukrainian entrepreneurs and the international startup community — many Ukrainians cannot even leave the country because of martial law. However, Ukrainian allies took care of this: they provide online consultations for Ukrainian techies and give free tickets to tech conferences to those who can travel abroad. Thanks to all this, dozens of startups with Ukrainian founders managed to raise funding and continue working on their Next Big Thing. Here’s my pick of 10 of them. Unstoppable Domains — $65 million Blockchain startup raised $65 million in a Series A round in July. The startup was valued at $1 billion. This round brought its external funding to a total of $72 million. Unstoppable Domains In total, 17 investors participated in the round led by Pantera Capital. Among them, there are Polygon, Rainfall Capital, Mayfield, Alchemy Ventures, and OKG Investments. Unstoppable Domains allows its users to register a crypto domain name on the Ethereum blockchain and turn them into NFTs. This gives the owners broader control and ownership and allows them to shorten their long crypto-wallet addresses. The startup has already registered over 2.5 million domains, generating over $80 million in sales. The most popular domains include .crypto, .nft, .wallet, and .bitcoin. The company employs 80 people and has offices in San Francisco and Kyiv. It was founded in 2018 by Matthew Gould, Braden Pezeshki, Bradley Kam, and Ukrainian . Bogdan Gusiev AirSlate — $51.5 million Workflow automation startup raised $51.5 million in a Series B round in June. The startup was valued at $1.25 billion. This round brought its external funding to a total of $181.5 million. AirSlate Chicago-based G Squared led the round with participation from UiPath Ventures. AirSlate provides its users with no-code tools for automating business processes, including PDF editing and e-signature workflow. The startup boasts more than 900,000 customers and 100 million users worldwide. Founded in 2008 and formerly named PDFfiller, AirSlate employs over 900 people. It has offices in Boston, Wroclaw and Kyiv. The company used to have an office in Saint Petersburg but, in July, it would be shutting it down. announced Its founders are and Ukrainian-born . Borya Shakhnovich Vadim Yasinovsky Preply — $50 million Tutoring platform raised $50 million in a Series C round in July, not disclosing its valuation. This round brought its external funding to $101.1 million. Preply In total, eight investors participated in the round led by Owl Ventures, which focuses on education. Among other investors, there are Educapital, Evli Growth Partners, Hoxton Ventures, and Diligent Capital. Preply develops a platform that allows tutors to teach 50 languages, including English, German, Arabic, French, Polish, and Ukrainian. It uses AI to find teachers depending on students’ schedules and learning goals. The startup says it has from 190 countries. 32,000 tutors Preply was founded in 2012 by three Ukrainian entrepreneurs — , , and . The startup employs over 400 people and has offices in Barcelona, New York and Kyiv. Dmytro Voloshyn Kirill Bigai Sergey Lukyanov Spin Technology — $16 million Data protection software developer raised $16 million in a Series A round in August, bringing its funding to $18 million. The company was valued at $55 million. Spin Technology The money came from Santa Barbara Venture Partners, Blu Venture Investors, and Blueprint Equity (lead investor). Spin Technology is a SaaS data protection company defending enterprises against ransomware, human error, and other cloud threats. Its software acts like an antivirus program, detecting ransomware across platforms like Google Workspace and Microsoft Office 365. It can automatically assess risks and make backups if needed. The startup caters to enterprise clients. It has partnered with over 1,600 companies, including Outbrain, Autodoc, Miller and Toyota. Founded in 2016 by Odesa-born , the company now has four offices: in Los Angeles, Palo Alto, Odesa, and Kyiv. It employs about 80 people. Dmitry Dontov ATLANT 3D — $15 million Nanotechnology startup raised $15 million in a Series A round in September, bringing its total funding to $17.2 million. It didn't disclose the valuation at which it closed the round. ATLANT 3D British VC West Hill Capital led the round, but other investors haven’t been disclosed. ATLANT 3D is a deep-tech startup that works on a tech that enables the manufacturing of materials and electronics at the atom level. “(We are) revolutionizing electronics of tomorrow atom by atom,” reads its motto. According to its website, it works — among other organizations — with STMicroelectronics, Sony, and NASA. Although the startup is based in Copenhagen, it was co-founded in 2018 by Ukrainian , who now leads the company as CEO. The ATLANT 3D’s website lists 10 employees, half of them PhDs Maksym Plakhotnyuk Fintech Farm — $7.4 million In the company’s first Seed round in January, raised $7.4 million, not disclosing its valuation. Fintech Farm Flyer One Ventures and Solid led the round; four other investors are AVentures Capital, TA Ventures, u.ventures, and Jiji. Dmytro Dubilet, the co-founder of U.K.-based Fintech Farm, was one of the founders of Ukraine’s neobank Monobank, which now has about 4.5 million users. Now, Fintech Farm is going to use the raised money to launch a similar product for the Nigerian market. Its name is . Fibo The company was co-founded by , , and serial entrepreneur . The company employs around 200 people and has two offices — in Dnipro and Kyiv. Alexander Vityaz Mykola Bezkrovnyy Dmytro Dubilet Salto X — €5.2 million Web3 startup raised €5.2 million in a Seed round in July, not disclosing its valuation. Salto X The round was led by Copenhagen-based venture fund byFounders and Frankfurt-based Blockwall. Box Group, crypto fintech 3Commas, and angels such as Liu Jiang and Alex Gluchkowski also participated in it (in total, six investors). Salto X uses blockchain to develop a remote-friendly alternative to stock options for European companies. Contributors receive NFT certificates for the cliff period. According to the startup, “it gives transparent access to equity compensation to contributors regardless of geography.” The startup was founded in 2021 by Estonians and , Latvian , and Ukrainian . Registered in Tallinn, the company doesn’t have a physical presence, with its 16 employees working remotely from Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine. Ragnar Sass Elise Sass Krists Avots Tanya Chaikovska PromoRepublic — €2 million SaaS startup raised €2 million in a Pre-Series A round in June, not disclosing its valuation. This round brought its external funding to $3.9 million. PromoRepublic Ukraine-based fund NetSolid Investments put €200,000 into the startup in this round. The names of other investors have not been disclosed. The Ukraine-Finnish-U.S. startup develops a social media marketing platform, catering to enterprises, marketing agencies, and SMBs. According to its website, the company has over 50,000 clients, including Curves International, doTERRA, Expedia Group Mannatech, and EZCORP. Founded back in 2014 by trio , , and , the company now employs over 50 people (contractors included). It has offices in Helsinki, London, New York, and Kyiv. Max Pecherskyi Mike Baranovskyi Val Grabko Cargofy — $2 million Freight-tech startup raised $2 million in a Seed round in February. The startup did not disclose its valuation, but according to , the company was valued at $10-15 million. Cargofy Forbes JKR Investment Group led the round, which also saw participation from Flyer One Ventures, Fair East Labs, and two angel investors — Murat Abdrakhmanov and Hannu Turunen. Dubbed Uber for truck drivers, Cargofy develops an AI-driven digital logistics platform that helps link up truck owners with people seeking to ship goods in Eastern Europe, India, and the U.S. Over the last three years up to February, the company had organized about 46,000 deliveries. Founded in 2014 by , , and , Cargofy now employs about 60 people. It’s based in Cedar Rapids in eastern Iowa. Overall, it has three offices in two countries, but the company’s website doesn’t specify where. Dimitri Alexiou Alex Kovalchuk Stakh Vozniak Choice QR — €1.5 million FoodTech startup raised €1.5 million in a Seed round in July, bringing its external funding to €2.4 million. The company did not disclose its valuation in the latest round. Choice QR Five investors participated in the round: Seedcamp, Reflex Capital, Purple Ventures, J&T Ventures, and Presto Ventures (lead investor). Choice QR develops a restaurant payment app. Using it, hospitality businesses can create a website for pick up and delivery, as well as digital menus, which allow their guests to order food and pay through QR codes. Over 7,000 businesses use the service, according to the Choice website. The company was founded in Kyiv by two Ukrainians — and — in 2021. Meet Bistroo: Solving Inequality in the Food Delivery Industry

Established brands and startups around the world are discovering the power of live interactive video – from and , to , , , and beyond. RushTix Codices DeNA BeLive GoPro Using Amazon Interactive Video Service (Amazon IVS), these innovative companies are transforming the future of ecommerce, fitness, user-generated content, and more by optimizing the live streaming experience for creators and audiences. A managed live streaming solution designed for developers to add live video and enable interactivity with video in their app or site without investing in streaming infrastructure, Amazon IVS was formally introduced in , but its development history traces much further back, with an origin shared with one of the world’s most widely used streaming platforms. July 2020 At any given moment, more than 2.5 million viewers are tuned into Twitch, with the site averaging 31 million daily viewers. In 2021, more than of live streamed video were watched on Twitch, a sizable bump from the more than 1 trillion minutes watched on the site in 2020 and 600 billion minutes watched in 2019. 1.3 trillion minutes Streaming live video on a massive global scale is a notoriously difficult process due to the unpredictable nature of both the Internet and live events. Live streams must be delivered in as close to real-time as possible, especially for the kind of interactive content that runs on Twitch. Today, more than 98-percent of all Twitch traffic remains on its network, one of the largest in the world dedicated exclusively to live streaming. However, its beginnings are far more humble. Launching ‘lifecasting’ Born as Justin.tv in 2007, Twitch was founded by Emmett Shear, Justin Kan, Kyle Vogt, and Michael Seibel. Initially only available in the US, the site’s first iteration featured a 24/7 live stream of Kan doing everyday tasks. Justin.tv was later opened up for other creators to live stream, while a section dedicated to video game streaming was launched as Twitch Interactive in 2011. Early infrastructure encompassed a few computers in a co-located facility delivering video via a third-party content delivery network (CDN), which quickly racked up massive bills. Looking for a more economical approach to their venture and to expand audience reach, the founders searched out a way to deliver video directly to save money; their solution was to hire Jon Shipman, a networking expert who launched Twitch down the road of building its own infrastructure. As an event-driven platform, Twitch traffic has always fluctuated, often spiking significantly, which could be stressful in the early startup days. Co-founder Shear explained, “Kyle and I used to wake up super early on Saturday mornings so that we could oversee the servers during peak viewing events. After a solid nine months of this, Kyle took a much-deserved vacation, but he was totally off the grid and our servers started to experience failure. Someone on our team called a pizza place near where he was staying and got them to deliver a pizza with a message on the box written in Sharpie, something to the effect of: ‘The servers are down. We need you to fix it.’ Needless to say, he did.” Laying the foundation for growth Twitch eventually began hosting almost all of its own traffic, to ensure video quality, and minimize reliance on CDNs. “It would be challenging to serve a global audience well using only the public Internet because Twitch would be susceptible to bottlenecks,” noted Martin “Marty” Hess, the General Manager of Amazon IVS who is responsible for the video infrastructure that Twitch uses. “For example, if a video originates in San Jose, California and the viewer is in Berlin, Germany, there are many places the video can get delayed. Maintaining a private network of backbone links and PoPs [Point of Presence] provides far better control over the quality and global delivery of the stream.” Along with adding capacity throughout the years, Twitch expanded its dedicated network and data center team with its acquisition by Amazon in 2014. The specialized team ensures its software works across thousands of servers globally and at the lowest latency possible, automatically working around component failures, so that problems in one location don’t affect the system around the world. The team became hyper-focused on developing unified media streaming software that would never fail and optimize streams. “We have local PoPs in every major market. On top of this, we have our software layer that’s constantly making micro adjustments to deliver the highest quality video for the available bandwidth. Our network is only used for live video, which is pretty unique,” said Hess. Developing with an eye on user experience With live streaming its core offering, stability was (and remains) paramount to Twitch. “In the early days, we relied on third-party software for taking video from broadcasters and preparing it for distribution, but a single failed instance would take down multiple streams, so we became focused on never letting our system crash, ever. Then, one of our developers wrote distribution software, basically over a weekend. It was quite a technical flex, but it got a lot of attention and showed us that it was possible,” recalled Shear. “It took us about a year to fine-tune the software and get it ready for production, and after rigorous testing, we rolled it out across the network,” added Hess. “A version of this software is also now publicly available through Amazon Interactive Video Service (Amazon IVS), which was launched in July 2020. Amazon IVS allows users to harness the power of Twitch’s live video streaming technology and spin up channels in minutes.” Prioritizing a dedicated global video network One reason Twitch has been able to keep up with a historic peak in demand throughout the pandemic is because of a dedicated global video network. Shear shared, “Thankfully we had the additional capacity in place to continue delivering a high-quality, interactive live streaming experience as our audience grew beyond even what we expected. We also further optimized video quality for reliability on available bandwidth, including offering only SD streaming options when public Internet infrastructure was particularly constrained in the early days of lockdowns.” Noted Hess, “Twitch has dealt with unique challenges, like managing live streams that jump from ten viewers to more than a million viewers in seconds. While classical storytelling is about relaying our real-life experiences, VR storytelling is about creating an immersion experience that mirrors a real-life experience. But telling a story is not just what VR storytelling is about; it’s about navigating the virtual space, exploring different possibilities of what the body or the brain can do, interacting with characters and events in a particular virtual world as it happens in real-time. Thus, VR storytelling is changing the ways in which we interact with spaces and with each other. Virtual reality storytelling is part of the larger technique of immersive storytelling, which has at its heart the ability to feel like the audience is “really there,” according to . The Guardian What Are The Components Of VR Storytelling? 1. World-building So, for it to be effective, the virtual reality experience must seem real, to be real for its players or users. The immersion experience must trick the brain into thinking it’s in a world that contains multiple dimensions and multiple aspects. Thus, a great deal of virtual world-building must take place in order for this to happen. Take, for example, the game, “The Solus Project”, made by Teotl and Grip Games. It’s a first-person, single-player VR experience in an advanced environmental survival game. The world of the story is set in space because the Earth has been destroyed, and the player must survive in a harsh environment and extreme weather conditions, the like not seen on Earth. For this story to unfold, the VR game is very dependent on this alternate world. 2. The Real Body in a VR Space The players, either as characters or interacting with virtual characters, must navigate through different spaces while immersing themselves in the storyline. For example, the interactive film, Hunger in Los Angeles, made by writer and director Nonny de la Peña, projects the embodied visitor into different spaces within LA. You walk through the streets of LA while every turn of your head shows you a different view. The film incorporates the storyline of an accident on a normal day: what do you do when you see someone in trouble? This immersive journalism method projects VR storytelling into a new sphere: with you, as the audience, right there when the breaking news happens. 3. Interactive Narrative Well, it can’t be VR storytelling without a story. But here, instead of listening or reading the story, you experience it. Many games now incorporate choice-based decisions in their storytelling. The interactive film and game Her Story, created by Sam Barlow, takes this on a breathtaking level, with your choice-based decisions solving a murder, or failing. This story has gives the old detective story genre a new spin, with VR technology, because it tricks your mind into thinking various different things (I won’t spoil it) that may or may not lead to solving the mystery. In telling the story, the narrative arc that the players must go through has to be coupled with intense emotions based on each action they make. What Are The Challenges of VR Storytelling? I’ve already said that virtual reality storytelling feels real, but is it really enough? Does it actually work? For now, it does and it doesn’t. It could definitely be made much better in the future. The technology is lagging behind because every VR experience has to have headsets like HTC VIVE, and when necessary, gyroscopes and motion-sensors, stereoscopic displays, and so on. A lot of these technologies are bulky and time-consuming to put on. Another challenge is on the dev and design side. There have been many failures in VR storytelling in interactive film and theater in the past that didn’t emphasize a truly immersive world or had a simple narrative that didn’t take into stock complex, real situations, or simply looked bad because of the UX design. A truly successful VR immersion must have these components, as well as a global marketing strategy. The Future of VR Storytelling We’re not just telling stories anymore, are we? Due to mixed reality VR, interactive VR, and (maybe) social VR, our lives are changing from this plane to other planes and dimensions. The fields of gaming, film, theater, journalism, and marketing are opening up to incorporate immersive storytelling. That means even traditional VR storytelling is gonna change. Choice-based narratives are going to be based on their data, from certain movements, rather than on player’s informed decisions, much like it would play out in real life. The films or games we immerse ourselves in will be components of our daily lives, like the wallpaper in our room. If the plans of social VR come to full fruition, we’ll be telling our own private stories minute-by-minute in our completely virtual world. The line between our physical outer reality and our virtual reality is already starting to blur, with the development of VR and AR. Instead of reading about a news story on Sudan online, you’ll literally be teleported to Sudan, not through some magic dust but through virtual reality. One thing is for sure: VR storytelling is the backbone of a multi-dimensional reality in the future. A Global VR Marketing Strategy with Translation in Mind VR storytelling is starting to be used worldwide, with prime examples in media, tourism, and the arts. It’s making huge leaps in tourism and media because of the way it can project someone to a specific location. Taking into account the cultural histories and sensitivities of each location, a global marketing strategy with VR in mind incorporates the people, the events, and the situations of these locations. VR Storytelling: Navigating Virtual Spaces To Tell An Immersive Story

In this interview with Ivo de la Rive Box, co-founder and CEO of we explore the advances in Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) and how it can be used to allow locked-in patients to interact with their surroundings and communicate with their loved ones. MindAffect Tell us a bit about yourself and about your Company? In 2016 prof. Peter Desain won the ALSA Prize4Life, which has as a purpose to make inventions/research reach ALS patients. To do so, the researcher has to leave the university, and together with HealthTech Venture builder, in our case NLC.health; they set-up an agreement to spin-out the technology from the university, and start a venture. Whereas the initial goal was to use the technology to help locked-in patients communicate again, it was clear from the start that it would be too small of a niche to justify all product development. So when I led the effort to start a company, attract, find and build a team, we added the aim of developing a generic BCI-methodology that could be used for many different purposes, while still focusing on assisting locked-in patients as a first proof so that the technology becomes robust enough to leave the lab. We have now reached the point that the first patient is using the technology daily, while we as a company have distilled the essential parts into a development kit, allowing others to either make a tailored solution for patients, do research, educate or just play around with the tech. MindAffect provides a headset that measures electrical brain activity. Through visually directing one’s attention at specifically designed stimulus, such as the special keyboard, the BCI matches the brain signals with the stimulus. This allows you to spell letter by letter with your brain. What brought you in this field? I was a co-founder of the previously mentioned HealthTech venture builder, but more interested in the early-stage venturing parts than in managing the process of selecting inventions. After I had sold and left my previous venture, a smart thermostat company, my friends at NLC saw my background in leading a software company that needed to get involved with hardware in order to be able to offer a real product. They asked whether this was the kind of technology I wanted to work on. Although I was working on a very different plan, I was intrigued by us humans already being able to command computers with brain signals and liked the fact that while searching for a business model, I would at least help people with a big need. My wife then convinced me that I had to stop rationalizing the choices at hand and go for it. In your opinion what is the field of Brain Computer Interfaces about? To me, it is about getting meaningful signals out of our brains to interact with a computer. That still leaves a lot of options open about its exact meaning, but at least I would like to eliminate relatively random signals interpreted in some way to make it seem there is some causality between how the brain is acting and what the computer does as a response. What are some challenges you face with the emerging technology? As probably with every emerging technology, it is not easy to build a cohesive story around the promise from scientists to what the technology will be able to do, versus the reality of engineers and what the same technology can currently do, not avoiding the expectations of the users or investors you have been selling the promise towards. So, every day we have to face the reality that we have to do cutting-edge work with limited budgets while delivering less in time than we had hoped for. Then you need to go out again to find more funds, while as humans, we cannot yet conceive how it will influence our life in about a decade, but that reality is not helping your pitch. How do you explain your product to the public? Picturing the feeling of being locked-in, is so overwhelming to anyone, yet explaining how you can communicate again by wearing a brain-sensing headband and having a ‘speller-app’ immediately activates the imagination. However, it is only part of our story, and we have to be honest that by lack of a scalable use-case for healthy people at the moment, we overuse the locked-in case in relation to how many people we can really help, or how much time we spend on really helping them. How far are we from getting this technology into the hands of the users? Whereas the first locked-in patient is using it since September last year, anyone can now order a , and should then be able to play with the technology by the end of March. dev.kit on KickStarter What does it take for this technology to become practically in the hands of the public? Now, whether a technology is available to the ‘maker-space’ is the same as being in ‘the hands of the public’ is another thing. My feeling is that the evolution of our work and that of other start-ups like ours will ultimately lead to consumer products in this decade. But for that to happen, it means that a corporate player commits significant resources for at least three years earlier, with pilot projects before that. We are now working on all the experimentation to get people to imagine such pilots. So, yes, there will be early VR games or AR glasses with brain control, and needy patients will be helped, but I do think we are still quite some years away from the technology being in the hands of the larger public. How do you envision its implementation in our daily lives? When I told my seven years old daughter about what I was going to do by setting up this venture, she immediately responded: “Ahh, so I could then switch the channels of the TV without even pushing a button”. I grew up walking to a TV to change the channel, so I do honestly feel limited in envisioning the exact use-cases. Maybe also because of having had the previous experience of seeing how wrong we all were in predicting how we would use internet-connected phones at the end of the last century. That was a previous step in enhancing our bodies with a computer in our pocket. But the impact on our brain of being able to command an outside assistant to help out instantly will surely liberate much creativity in the generation of our kids, and they will find the real use. What features and benefits will your product bring to the consumers? For the coming years, it will mostly bring benefits to disabled people who have not found solutions by using the currently available technologies like eye tracking, voice control, or simple switches: both for communication and environment controls. This can have a significant impact on those people and their loved ones with whom they live. What problem will this product solve? Except for the case mentioned above, we cannot deny that we have a solution looking for a problem. But in looking for it, we productize our own research and enable others to start from the point that we have reached. I think progress in BCI research has been hampered by lots of small teams sitting on their work instead of sharing solutions for others to improve. I believe that by collaborating, we all have a good chance of succeeding. Where do you see the product in few years from now? I am still resisting to adopt reading glasses, but I see myself wearing a nice light pair in a couple of years, with some sorts of menus and pop-ups that I can select with my brain: no need for voice-control, gestures or some sort of wireless mouse to get more info on what I see or to get incoming messages. Is the market large enough? Are there competitors? Our original assumption that the market of locked-in patients was too small to justify product development has been more than validated. Research, education and hobbyism on cool technology, however, should be able to justify work on the current scale. But then there is the human desire to go for new frontiers. There does not necessarily need to be a clear market yet, for many people to venture into the field. So, yes, we could consider companies like Next Mind and Neurable as competitors, but them winning a contract likely gives us a better chance to win one with someone else. We are all doing our small bits in creating a market. Would the product be influenced by others markets and why? I hope it does: we might then actually use it to solve a real, current problem. If all attention is on ‘disruption’ rather than creating fully new stuff, it is because there is an existing market that you can get a share of. That helps to fund your work. Will you give us a closing remark and areas of improvements? The research on BCIs is already out there for quite some time, but for BCIs to be used effectively and by a significant part of the population, we still need a lot of hard work, from a wide variety of different talents. Whereas a lot of hard-core engineering is needed, the success will ultimately come from inviting designers, early users, and non-technical entrepreneurs to the table. If Gartner predicts BCIs to fall into the ‘trough of disillusionment’ pretty soon, we should not let negative sentiments influence ourselves, but understand that there is a lot of hard work still to be done, to ultimately earn the respect of normal users for our products. Technology has revolutionized trading for individual investors in the early part of this century, from online trading tools to robo-advisors, to the rise of crypto and fintech applications. At the same time, trading venues have become more complex, order routing and commission agreements more opaque and executions more instantaneous — literally measurable in microseconds. For trading application developers, it is like an arms race just to try to keep up. Nonetheless, these technology advancements have provided retail traders with better market access than ever before, both in terms of real-time quotations and trade data as well as efficient trade execution. The standards for investing applications have gone up significantly, and investors using an app to do their trades now expect a clean, simple interface, effective and elegant execution alternatives, even cryptocurrency options. With trading commissions now at zero or close to it industry wide, trading is more appealing than ever to individual investors. Investors Pouring In This can be seen by the record number of new investors signing up since commissions fell to zero on the major e-brokerage platforms. One of the industry’s biggest players, TD Ameritrade, Other big players like Schwab, Fidelity and eTrade experienced similar gains. gained over 600,000 new accounts during the first quarter of 2020 alone. All of these firms share common characteristics: strong brands built through decades of retail advertising, and trading applications built atop legacy technology, some of which dates back to the 20th century. But the truth is that the historic bull market we all lived through did not inspire much genuine innovation in trading applications, just incremental improvements. Retail traders still trade mostly based on gut-feel, untested strategies, and tips. Recent market volatility and rapid price fluctuations have proven difficult for them, causing many missed opportunities and panicked market exits at the worst possible time. Millions of new online brokerage clients will likewise be slow-moving and ignorant of the kind of trading strategies that can be used to profit from market volatility, leaving them as easy targets for high-frequency traders and arbitragers. Automating Alpha Indeed, today’s retail investors still lack a crucial set of functionalities that keeps the playing field tilted in favor of institutional traders, which is the ability to make faster, analysis-driven decisions in dynamic market conditions that are backtested and strategy-based. For institutions, this plays out in the form of algorithms that are able to identify trade opportunities and be able to execute such trades without manual intervention. Few day trading apps are designed to compete with quants or prop shops. OK, Boomer Today’s Millennial and Gen-X traders are considerably more sophisticated than their counterparts of years past. Apart from more closely aligning trading goals with execution, algos also encourage curiosity. This second element is crucial because frankly, today’s trading apps lack inspiration ( ). and sometimes, availability The tools required to properly research an idea, to visualize it and then backtest it simply aren’t there. Some online brokerage apps claim, for instance, that their education hub will “grow with you,” surfacing new ideas as you go. But without a set of pre-established algorithms to deploy, that growth will be limited. The joy of an algo-driven trading program lies not just in its ability to learn on the fly to protect your trades. There is also an elegance involved when working with algos, tweaking them this way or that and figuring them out. They make for better trades, but also better traders. Opening Up the Crypt(o) Whether you’re an agnostic, evangelist or skeptic, there is no denying that in the future of investing—going far beyond simple stores of value to pairs trading and, still higher up, complicated fund . cryptocurrencies will have a significant role portfolio management and rebalancing Market events, like the , are likewise tricky to trade and rife with speculation. highly-anticipated Bitcoin halving countdown later this month For as much attention as crypto has gotten, they can be harnessed far better by an algo than by a trader trying to keep an eye on the many different trading venues simultaneously, some of which get extremely illiquid when large orders hit. This will be particularly true as more “traditional” markets begin introducing regulated fund and derivative instruments on cryptocurrencies. Ironically, the more mainstream cryptocurrencies become, the more complex the trading around them is likely to get. Algorithms will likely be the only way for individual investors to bridge that gap. Chop, Chop Finally, a note about the current market: algos are readymade for volatility. It is unfortunate and tragic that the pandemic was the so-called “Black Swan” event that jolted investors out of their somnambulance after more than a decade of steadily rising market values. Of course, we all realized that some sort of market correction was inevitable, but few of us were ready for it when it hit. And as the new brokerage account numbers prove, many investors — particularly younger investors — have waited for this type of moment. How do they navigate this interregnum, with so much uncertainty still in play? The answer is clearly to have the right trading tools at their disposal. There will be a lot of feeling around in the dark during this period; it is the nature of volatility that some ideas will prove to be wrong. So trading apps need to be up to the task of exposing investors to pricing and market data that is relevant, present it in a way that is actionable, and with strategies at hand — algos — to animate sound decision-making. From the Ground Up Until recently an investor needed to be a coder and understand a lot of complicated math to be able to even design the simplest of algorithms. Even with the requisite coding skills, the cost and effort required to set up a functioning system to algo trade are such high barriers that they keep most investors away. Only Streak ( : ), which launches in the United States next week, removes these hurdles and enables investors to create, backtest and deploy their trading ideas and strategies without having to write a single line of code, or to worry about any of the complexity underlying the algorithms it uses. Disclaimer The author is the CTO at Streak Algorithmic trading brings lots of advantages. Part of it is the automation — being able to do a trade without checking over and over throughout the day if a limit up or down has been met, for instance — but it is also about sophistication. Many traders today are using trading techniques like mean reversion, momentum indicators, volume weighted average price (VWAP), and price action.
