The most ‘clever’ thing about this short film is how the message enters the anesthetised minds of unsuspecting millennials. I will elaborate on this subject in an essay I’m currently working on. But for now I feel compelled by the unanimous praise for this Jonze/FKA Twigs project to scream out: ‘what the hell is the matter with everyone?!’ As you will know by now, Spike Jonze has directed a four-minute ad for Apple’s HomePod smart speaker that stars musician and dancer FKA Twigs. There is so much wrong with this video that in this short rant it is difficult to fit everything in, but I’ll attempt a brief summary. By taking advantage of consumers’ preferred use of their home assistant to stream music, Apple has tapped into the joy we all know of losing ourselves to the rhythm of a song. “I can’t stop playing Apple’s clever new HomePod ad” The Verge said: “Spike Jonze and FKA twigs Made a Jaw-Dropping Short Film for Apple’s HomePod” Adweek: “Spike Jonze’s New Apple Ad Is an Amazing Music Video” Nerdist: “FKA Twigs Dances Her Way Out of Depression in Spike Jonze’s Film for Apple HomePod” creativity-online: Are we to believe that dancing around your apartment is all that’s needed to confront the debilitating condition of depression? Jonze encapsulates in 4 minutes all that’s wrong with today’s Western culture. Demoralised by her contemporary urban lifestyle, lacking an ability to select music for herself, the defeated young woman asks what will eventually become a standard AI home surveillance system to choose which music she should dance her cares away to — in a short-lived, and realistically anticlimactic, state of blissful ignorance. Is “Apple’s clever new HomePod ad” really that clever? Or is it vapid? It’s important to contrast this ad with Ridley Scott’s now-legendary ‘1984’ Apple commercial. Arguably, the emptiness of this new ad represents the marked decline in relative creative innovation in both Apple and popular culture in general spanning the decades since that 1-minute piece aired during the 1984 Super Bowl. When assessing Jonze’s video in this light, the regressive reality today becomes quite startling. The glaring irony is that the 1984 ad introduced a new product to the world by literally showing the smashing of authoritarian power, to represent a rejecting of conformity; the 2018 ad introduces a new product while surreptitiously portraying consumer capitulation to the surveillance state. Jonze’s master-stroke (on behalf of not only Apple but also Amazon and Google) is in mesmerising his audience with an illusion, while the message of normalising the practice of surveillance goes unnoticed. There is only one thing that is truly clever about the ad and that is how the message makes its way into the anesthetised and indoctrinated minds of unsuspecting millennials. This film is a harbinger of a new dystopian reality which we will have to learn to navigate. I so far cannot find anyone analysing the piece critically. All I’ve found is relentless gushing over how amazing it apparently is. Can people not readily identify that the video’s aim is to normalise the authoritarian practices of Western surveillance states? Has everyone really forgotten what Edward Snowden revealed about NSA surveillance? Apart from the fact that this really is not that ground-breaking— creatively speaking, for years designers have experimented with interesting ways of extending objects into kaleidoscopic lines and patterns — we must look beyond the setting to the more serious issues. Firstly, if you watch the disturbingly nonchalant Alexa Prize Finals , you will learn how researchers are working on advancing conversational AI so that we will be more comfortable having conversations with in the near future: video machines “ announces the 2018 teams selected to compete for the Alexa Prize, a $3.5 million university challenge to advance human-computer interaction. When you hear that someone makes 7 figures like Nicole, maybe you think that she has ONE million dollar stream of revenue. That’s how it can look from the outside anyway. But it’s mostly a myth. Does Nicole really get a million dollars from one source of revenue? NO! Her 7 figure business is a combo of her speaking, her products, her inner circle, her affiliate business — together to make her whole 7 figure business. all of these come I know that that revenue streams need to be 6 figures to add up to 7 figures. And maybe you’re freaking out right now. Like “Hey whoa Jamie you lost me, I’m definitely never going to be in a place where that’s relevant to me — flattering you think I’ll have a 7 figure business though, but uh…” Nicole’s example numbers might freak you out, boss but that’s not the point. You can look at building your personal income in the same way to set realistic expectations. Maybe one day you hope to earn $X00,000’s instead. It works the same way. Building ONE $100,000+ revenue stream can feel pretty scary. Maybe it even seems impossible. Instead, you can put together a mix of revenue streams that total your goal revenue. Gary Vaynerchuk did the math in Crush It and Thank You Economy: is big enough to build a hustle of $10,000-$50,000/year with dedicated work. basically every niche Even if your passion is something very obscure, with a small community like chicken farming. Figure out where you want to be at the top of your career. Work backwards. Try creating new revenue streams. If it seems like the revenue stream will be small, you’re working on it for 3 months and it’s not made $10,000 — understand that maybe that isn’t the strongest pain point for your market. Keep exploring, when you identify the revenue stream won’t grow to a size you need — attempt a new variation or idea. If you go into creating products to serve, and to give back value — the rest is trial and error, and learning how to identify the losers and move on from them. If you’re working on it for a year and it doesn’t make $10,000 it’s definitely a loser. Otherwise, what constitutes a winner and a loser will depend on your goals. If you want to make $100,000, you’re looking for 2, 3 or 4 sources of income that total around $25,000-$50,000. How can you give to people in 3 or 4 ways? a part time job’s worth of value Maybe you’ll get lucky, or you have an audience whose pains you know well and your first try will get that revenue stream to $20k by June. If that’s the case, you can estimate it will be a $40ker. You’re most of the way there, you also have a profitable market you can probably assist further. Look, even Kim Garst started off making — just enough extra cash to cover her car payment. only a few hundred bucks per month It’s taken her 5 years at least to build Boom! Social to where it is now. It’s so important to NOT freak out, and to set realistic expectations because the truth is that a fully functioning million dollar business definitely does not pop out magically overnight. You’ve gotta be in it for the longggggg haul, baby! but I wanted to hit on it again. It’s important to keep your focus on because business people are burnt out, stressed, and suffering high rates of depression — We’ve talked about mental health and business before, so and we’re just not talking about it. If you feel like this is you, know that you’re normal. please The worst part about the silence, is that you feel like a weirdo — and you absolutely shouldn’t. If you’re struggling with burnout and depression please know that we take you seriously. No one will think you’re weak for reaching out. I encourage you to grab a trusted mentor, friend, stranger, your mom, your dog, your girlfriend — even a therapist if you don’t feel close to anyone but I implore you to please talk to someone about how you’re feeling. Especially if you’ve thought of taking your own life. The first step to feeling better is going to be to not bottle it up. Keep in mind that when you feel really lousy, you might feel like you want to “pull away” from people. Going out to dinner, or having a chat with your friend isn’t relaxing anymore — it’s stressful. If you’re feeling like this, you should know that the times you want to pull away are often when you need to move towards someone the most. What you’re feeling is normal. It’s scary. But nobody does it by themselves. You’re only human. The thematic diversity chosen by the students revealed an expansion of their horizons, demonstrating the applicability of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and solidifying ChatGPT as a "co-advisor." The advisor, in turn, assumed a decisive "pedagogical mediator" role, fostering a collaborative learning environment and providing precise guidance. Vygotsky argues that cognitive development is strongly shaped by social and cultural interactions, dismissing purely biological or innate interpretations. He emphasizes the influence of language, culture, and social tools in the shaping of human thought (Vygotsky, 1991). Modernity has brought a new digital culture, challenging educators to renew their pedagogical approaches with intentionality and innovation. Thus, while Santos et al. (2020) pointed to the scarcity of time as an obstacle to the implementation of active methodologies, this research demonstrates the use of ChatGPT as a viable solution to optimize group advising time and to boost innovative methods in research guidance within the educational context. The integration of AI has proven not only efficient but also enriching, allowing the exploration of interdisciplinary and current themes, surpassing the temporal limitations identified by Santos et al. (2020). By using ChatGPT to structure information and guide workgroups, the advisor overcame resistances and lack of experience, consolidating technology as an essential ally in the mediation of learning. It is essential to emphasize that the co-advisership provided by ChatGPT offered the teacher the ability to provide significant support, even in areas of knowledge that transcend the academic training of the researcher, enhancing the autonomy of students in their research. This methodology surpassed the barriers of advisors' specializations and reinforced the emerging position of AI as a valuable pedagogical resource. The use of ChatGPT demonstrated how technology could complement human expertise in the advising process and enhance students' learning opportunities. This innovative approach resulted in richer teaching practices and a deeper reflection on pedagogy, strengthening and consolidating the educational identity of the researcher. In this study, a Physics teacher in teacher training, in his debut as a advisor in Scientific Initiation at the Elementary level, exceeded expectations and personal resistances, perceiving a transformation in teaching practice, with a clear social intentionality and commitment to scientific dissemination. The findings also point to a remarkable synergy between theory and practice in the educational environment, integrating active methodologies, use of technology, and pedagogical action. They reflect the understanding that Education, more than a mere application of theories, is a complex and interactive practice that must be in constant evolution to enrich the student learning experience. The study culminated in a notable cultural transformation within the school. This change, from a traditional view to a socialized learning approach, was catalysed by a proactive and non-imposing school management. The administration played a decisive role by delegating responsibilities and incorporating the community into the so-called "pedagogical stops," encouraging closer collaboration between students and teachers. Teachers' resistance to innovation, initially robust, was gradually overcome by the visible impact of the enthusiasm and active participation of the students in the ProjectBased Learning process. Notably, although ChatGPT was not directly used by students due to teachers' resistance, the movement towards pedagogical innovation positively influenced the school community. Student groups from the school gained recognition at prestigious events: one group won first place at Mostratec and another received an honourable mention at Femositec. These successes are particularly notable because they occurred in projects that were not under the direct guidance of the researcher. Such achievements demonstrate the indirect impact of the implemented methodology, evidencing the awakening of intrinsic motivation among students and the subsequent decrease in opposition from teachers. Therefore, it is noted that, despite the initial resistance of teachers to adopting innovative methodologies and the use of artificial intelligence, the progress of the project and the visible enthusiasm of the students were crucial in overcoming these obstacles. The experience reaffirms the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in engaging students and teachers in a joint educational experience, promoting the socialization of knowledge and the renewal of pedagogical practices, which was proven by the tangible recognition through awards at local scientific fairs. This study also exemplifies the effectiveness of action research in educational contexts, demonstrating how intentional actions and critical reflections can trigger significant cultural transformations, whose effects reverberate beyond the physical boundaries of the educational institution. The observed change in the school culture, transitioning from traditional practices to a collaborative and socialized approach, corroborates the ideals of action research. The active participation and engagement of teachers, students, and school management were reflected in the continuous improvement of pedagogical practices and the promotion of meaningful learning. The iterative cycles of planning and reflection facilitated the overcoming of initial resistances, culminating in external recognition through awards at scientific fairs. The importance of effective school management is highlighted, which, through its supportive and empowering role, significantly influenced the pedagogical renewal. This study also exemplifies the effectiveness of action research in educational contexts, showing how intentional actions and critical reflections can trigger significant cultural transformations, whose effects reverberate beyond the physical boundaries of the educational institution. The change observed in the school culture, moving from traditional practices to a collaborative and socialized approach, corroborates the ideals of action research. The thematic diversity chosen by the students revealed an expansion of their horizons, demonstrating the applicability of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and solidifying ChatGPT as a "co-advisor." The advisor, in turn, assumed a decisive "pedagogical mediator" role, fostering a collaborative learning environment and providing precise guidance. Vygotsky argues that cognitive development is strongly shaped by social and cultural interactions, dismissing purely biological or innate interpretations. He emphasizes the influence of language, culture, and social tools in the shaping of human thought (Vygotsky, 1991). Modernity has brought a new digital culture, challenging educators to renew their pedagogical approaches with intentionality and innovation. Thus, while Santos et al. (2020) pointed to the scarcity of time as an obstacle to the implementation of active methodologies, this research demonstrates the use of ChatGPT as a viable solution to optimize group advising time and to boost innovative methods in research guidance within the educational context. The integration of AI has proven not only efficient but also enriching, allowing the exploration of interdisciplinary and current themes, surpassing the temporal limitations identified by Santos et al. (2020). By using ChatGPT to structure information and guide workgroups, the advisor overcame resistances and lack of experience, consolidating technology as an essential ally in the mediation of learning. It is essential to emphasize that the co-advisership provided by ChatGPT offered the teacher the ability to provide significant support, even in areas of knowledge that transcend the academic training of the researcher, enhancing the autonomy of students in their research. This methodology surpassed the barriers of advisors' specializations and reinforced the emerging position of AI as a valuable pedagogical resource. The use of ChatGPT demonstrated how technology could complement human expertise in the advising process and enhance students' learning opportunities. This innovative approach resulted in richer teaching practices and a deeper reflection on pedagogy, strengthening and consolidating the educational identity of the researcher. In this study, a Physics teacher in teacher training, in his debut as a advisor in Scientific Initiation at the Elementary level, exceeded expectations and personal resistances, perceiving a transformation in teaching practice, with a clear social intentionality and commitment to scientific dissemination. The findings also point to a remarkable synergy between theory and practice in the educational environment, integrating active methodologies, use of technology, and pedagogical action. They reflect the understanding that Education, more than a mere application of theories, is a complex and interactive practice that must be in constant evolution to enrich the student learning experience. The study culminated in a notable cultural transformation within the school. This change, from a traditional view to a socialized learning approach, was catalysed by a proactive and non-imposing school management. The administration played a decisive role by delegating responsibilities and incorporating the community into the so-called "pedagogical stops," encouraging closer collaboration between students and teachers. Teachers' resistance to innovation, initially robust, was gradually overcome by the visible impact of the enthusiasm and active participation of the students in the ProjectBased Learning process. Notably, although ChatGPT was not directly used by students due to teachers' resistance, the movement towards pedagogical innovation positively influenced the school community. Student groups from the school gained recognition at prestigious events: one group won first place at Mostratec and another received an honourable mention at Femositec. These successes are particularly notable because they occurred in projects that were not under the direct guidance of the researcher. Such achievements demonstrate the indirect impact of the implemented methodology, evidencing the awakening of intrinsic motivation among students and the subsequent decrease in opposition from teachers. Therefore, it is noted that, despite the initial resistance of teachers to adopting innovative methodologies and the use of artificial intelligence, the progress of the project and the visible enthusiasm of the students were crucial in overcoming these obstacles. The experience reaffirms the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in engaging students and teachers in a joint educational experience, promoting the socialization of knowledge and the renewal of pedagogical practices, which was proven by the tangible recognition through awards at local scientific fairs. This study also exemplifies the effectiveness of action research in educational contexts, demonstrating how intentional actions and critical reflections can trigger significant cultural transformations, whose effects reverberate beyond the physical boundaries of the educational institution. The observed change in the school culture, transitioning from traditional practices to a collaborative and socialized approach, corroborates the ideals of action research.
