Ask any questions that are bothering you. Ask for an explanation if something is not clear enough. Or anyone will be able to tell you — You misunderstood! (as it happened in my case) Or you can overestimate an offer. Or you just didn’t find any hidden terms (as it was in my case) 2) Teaching people is hard. Creating a course from scratch is a hell of a process. Surely — if you are working on something, that you never did before, it is hard. So any unusual activity will take more time and energy from you at the beginning. But by doing something new you will learn something new too. 3) Your situation is unique. Unique for you. And nobody cares about it. And when you read about an average level, you need to understand when someone else is above an average level too. (Why didn’t I remember that? I had “A” in Maths logic. Maths is a bitch.) 4) Always make a quick turnaround. Don’t try to perfect your course the first time you do it. It will help you to review results and draw a conclusion: “Continue to do it or not.” spend a lot of time on course creation. Yes, this is my advice! Especially if it is your first course. You are LEARNING how to teach. And if you spend a week on it and didn’t feel that you made good progress, then this is a big deal for you at this specific moment. Step back, calm down and split your course into 3 parts. Do not When I developed my course I prepared and used slides. They helped me a lot. I used some HTML template with jQuery animations. But right now Github is full of different static website generators. And you can use/store your content in *.md format (Markdown format) and it will generate you a slideshow at build. And you can publish it on GitHub Pages and it will be online. Should you spend time preparing detailed course exploration? Is creating a great “course details” section a must-have? Tips for First-Time Skillshare Course Creators

Let’s start with the positives: Support team is very friendly. My support manager spends a lot of time answering my questions and advising me. I hope that in future they will be able to provide feedback to the top staff and the top manager will be able to react to it. Teaching a community is very friendly and also active. I saw a lot of cool courses related to art & illustrations, for example. Very friendly people. I finished and published my first course with their help. And now I can teach people online! Yay! Skillshare was a driving force for me to extend my skillset, and I am grateful for that. Ok, now let’s jump in to the full story. Briefly, I had a bad experience after publishing my course. This is my list of things that went wrong: I was misled * When I raised hard questions, I didn’t get a reply. Nobody attended my course after 3 months. ** *Over-promising may be a more accurate term here. I was oversold by messages around: How cool it would be when I published my course. How it would help the community of people who want to learn how to code. And how profitable it would be. ** Yeah, yeah, I know. Disclaimer: It’s my own situation. The course was published on November 17th. In the middle of December, I started going crazy because I didn’t get what I expected. SS Manager tells me about “marketing push” that they plan to do. And they did. They start spending cash by sponsoring my favorite youtube bloggers. I get feeling like I’m surrounded by this company. I was procrastinating and tried to forget about this situation. But when I opening Youtube — I see a SS logo. It was not one blogger. I saw that advertising at “Curious Elephant”, “Answers with Joe” and “Real Engineering” channels. When I read the answer on that page I find a hidden term: BIG PRIZE ”. “You will receive a BIG PRIZE only if you will bring 10 people that will be new users Yes, It was not hidden, but this was not what I expected. And I start to know about it only after 4 months of chatting with managers. For some reasons, I cannot find exact links that refer to this text. It’s strange… So, it’s a payment for an affiliate marketing, right? Not like a gift for me as a newbie teacher. Oops. And yeah, I understand everything. Usually, I’m a patient person and understand a lot of processes. As you see, I didn’t jump into quick conclusions here. I wait and observe and I give my feedback after a few months of using the platform. They told me that I can get more views (in the middle of our initial chats, by sharing with my Medium followers) But before I started to film my course — I told my manager that I don’t want to work on promotion. For me, it was better to focus on the product or at course production. It was a good time for managers to notify me that without self-promo I can get 0. (Yes, spoiler — I got $0 after few months.) Side note: I have another reason to feel sad. I started to prepare a few courses. Actually, this one was the hardest one for me. I was learning how to plan the filming process, text scripting, etc. And right now I have a lot of half-completed content and a lot of frustration. It will be hard for me, emotionally to get back and complete those courses… They not only distract me from my project a few times. I also get another punch and loser’s feeling. Next problems I have a lot of time, so I started to explore the whole platform. I found the main group only for Skillshare teachers. And at some point, I saw a post from another teacher. He doesn’t have views too. - He was a more experienced user of SS. - He had published courses before (>3). - He has a good profile. - He has many followers and students, that completed his course. Your students and followers usually receive a notification about your new course. - He has some courses with a good number of students, likes, etc. - He posted a question, asking is it normal to have 0 views. And it’s a similar situation that I have. You see — I wasn’t alone. “Woo Hoo. I’m not the one with a problem. As he is a popular teacher -> he 100% will get an explanation or official reply” This group has an admin/moderator like a person who cares about teaching success. I assume this person should follow all discussions, right? So she was aware of his post (or did she fail it?) NOTE: Other teachers saw this post too. They are worried too. I can bet my ass that major players (like moderators, etc.) saw his post too. But instead of answering and having some discussion — they ignore it. This teacher told me that his post will be buried by new posts. He was right. Success Manager didn’t reply to us. She posted a New Year blog post, where they tactically advised — “teachers should wait sometime before their courses become popular”. (Aka in a few months you’ll only start to get views/money). It looks like a reply to our concerns. Next thing — they introduce a contest. It was “sugar tasting” contest. Teachers should post a comment about their New Years wishes, plans for 2019 years. I was thinking: “Why not trying something new, right? You never know what tomorrow will bring. And what will be a good transition if you didn’t try new opportunities.” I tried and this is the story. We want to ensure that we pay fairly regardless of what an individual may have previously earned. Not only did we have to update the salaries for new hires, we also did the same for the current team. How did we do it? To start, we had to do a lot of research into market salaries. It can be tempting to make exemptions for certain candidates, so in order to stick to our policy, we wanted to be 100% confident in the strength of our offers. We chatted with other companies, pored through data, and created a formula for compensation to make our tiers more objective. Contrary to what skeptics might think, our no negotiation policy wasn’t about paying as low as possible. It’s about offering competitive salaries — we want to beat 75% of companies at a similar stage. In some instances, candidates who were getting underpaid at their last job will get a 10–20% increase at Skillshare. In other cases , the inverse might be true too. Inspired by Buffer’s salary transparency, every employee can see their current salary, the salary levels for their team, and what each level’s salary increase would amount to. We know this policy won’t be for everyone. We know that we will lose some candidates as a result. The truth is, most of what they do can be learned through a few hours of research and a bit of hands-on experience. A “try before you buy” sales experience has become a pillar of the Product Lead Growth/self-service sales world, however getting a trial right is more nuanced than you might think. We implemented a credit card upfront trial at Codecademy and had a huge conversion win, which taught me a lot about what makes an effective experience. There are always people who will buy your product no matter what. There are always people who will never buy your product. A good trial experience converts the people who are hesitant but could be convinced. How Products Get Sold Online For 90% of products that are sold online, there are 4 core sales motions. Direct Purchase - e.g pay now for access Direct Purchase + Guarantee - Pay now for access, we’ll guarantee that this will work for you or your money back Trials - Experience the paid product for x days, y uses, etc then decide if you want to buy Freemium - Certain things are free forever, certain things are paid forever In reality, these models are mixed and matched, as you can have a freemium product that allows people to have a trial of the paid tier, but for clarity's sake, you can think of them independently. The further you move down this list, the less risk that your customer feels but also the slower that you'll collect cash from sales. From the company's perspective, you want to be as high up on this list as possible. From the customer’s perspective, you want to be as low down this list as possible. The goal of testing your sales flow is to see where you have to meet in the middle. You want to give away as little as you have to. The Goal of a Trial The job of a trial is to allow the user to experience the paid product for just long enough to see the value and no longer. How long it will take to see this value depends on: Who your customer is How often the customer experiences the problem you solve How much they trust your product & your company If you’re building a database solution for enterprise customers, they might need 180 days to get up to speed and see the value. However, if you’re building a running companion app for serious athletes, they might be able to see the value in 72 hours. It all depends on the context of the user. Additionally, as companies mature, they start to offer different trial experiences for different customer types. The Key Decisions of a Trial To set up a trial, there are 2 key decisions that you’ll have to make. 1. What is the “cost” or friction that the customer needs to pay? To make a trial effective, the customer has to “pay” with something or overcome some level of friction to get started. In the consumer space, the best practice is currently to have them input a credit card to begin the trial. Effectively all consumer-focused product that has a trial using this model (such as ​ , ​ , ​ , etc) Headspace Peleton Spotify If you’re building a consumer product right now, don't overthink this part and just use a credit card trial upfront. For business-focused (or B2B) products, the best practices are a lot less clear. What makes B2B different is that the user might not end up being the buyer of the product due to how budgets/purchase approvals work. Therefore, your user, who is interested in your product and wants to check it out, might not have the ability to put in a credit card. Products like MongoDB have helped popularize the Product Led Growth movement, where they let a user get ​started for free​ with no credit card required. This works because: Setting up a database is a lot of work, so onboarding has built in friction Actually buying the product for large companies is likely in the 5-6 figure range, so that’s beyond what most people will charge on a credit card. The sales cycles can be long, so having users already on the product will help them move the sale process forward. Miro combines ​all​ of these tactics but in a subtle way. They have a free tier, a direct purchase tier, and a credit card upfront tier. They are (likely) only offering a credit card upfront trial on their business plan as that's the plan they actually want you to buy. 2. How long should it be? Building on the above advice, you’ll need to make this trial long enough so that the user experiences the value, but no longer. The hardest part about managing a trial is trying to determine how long that period or usage is. The best advice to early-stage companies is to default to being generous here. Start with a longer window and then test making it shorter. As we talked about a ​few months back,​ most major companies start with more generous trial windows and pull them back with time: Netflix cut their streaming service trial from 30 days to 14 days, to 7 days, to no trial at all. The NY Times used to offer 10 free articles per month, then cut it to 5 articles, then cut it to 3 articles. Miro once upon a time gave away unlimited boards, then cut it to 10 boards, then to 3 boards. The more that you give away initially, the more people will experience your product and the faster your brand will grow. However, this comes at the expense of your immediate revenue and conversion. Additionally, the length of your trial can be used as both a tool against your competitors and to help mitigate other business constraints. ​ ​ likely in response to the other streaming services (like ​HBO​, ​Netflix​ and ​Peacock​) not offering any trials. Hulu offers a free month ​ ​ - This might be slightly too short to satisfy the habit requirement, however, they need to compensate for their library being significantly smaller than their competitors. With a longer trial, I would guess most people would just binge-watch Yellowstone and then cancel. ​ Paramount offers a free week ​ - Likely a bid to acquire more users from their competitors, Amazon Music ​ ​ by also increasing their trial to 3 months Spotify offers 3 free months responded So What Do You Do With This Information? If you are implementing a trial for the first time, I would start with a relatively basic model, you can always iterate on this later. Additionally, I would watch out for the following “gotchas” Longer trials slow down the payback cycle on paid ads - So if your company acquires primarily through paid media, how fast you can grow is partially dependent on how fast you collect money and re-deploy it to buy ads. The longer the trial, the more delay there will be. The longer your trial, the fewer shots you have at improving it each year - Skillshare (back in the day) ran 90 90-day free trial, which apparently was the best at converting users, however really slows down product development. A trial this long means that they only had 3-4 tests they could run per year to improve it. If you have a material cost to provide your product (such as streaming music rights, physical products, etc) your trial user (can) become a material expense. Remember to factor this in and don’t go broke :) Trials can be a huge step forward for a company if implemented correctly and they are worth re-testing the model every few quarters to see what additional conversion you can find.

The issue is that – while yes, it's good to have many aspirations – you can't spread yourself thin and expect big results. Just ask Einstein. What Is the Einstein Principle? Albert Einstein remains one of the most infamous minds in known history. The intelligence he possessed and wielded has become the stuff of legends. And, of course, we all love the trivia about his childhood: "Did you know Einstein flunked his school science classes?" "Einstein could barely speak until he was four years old." These are just some of the famous snippets about Einstein. But there's one thing that often goes overlooked: his ability to focus on a few core tasks and really commit to them. But it wasn't the task itself that overwhelmed me; it was the thought of being so hyper-fixated on one task for days, months, or years at a time. Because we're not used to that level of dedication, are we? In the 21st century, there's no end to the distractions at our disposal. We can start a dropshipping company in about an hour on our laptops. Then we can open a new tab and sign up for Skillshare to start learning a coding language. Within the very same day, we can apply for a new job, sign up for a gym, and order a pottery wheel from Amazon. But just because we have everything at our fingertips doesn't mean we have to do everything – or indeed, that we . should How Your Aspirations Keep You Stuck I'm going to hazard a guess that the majority of my readers are self-help consumers. I certainly am. If you've ever watched my Success Story Podcast over on YouTube, you will have seen the enormous collection of self-development books behind me. Self-help content, I believe, is excellent when approached properly. But here's the problem – we don't often approach it in a productive way. How often have you gotten to the end of a self-help book feeling inspired to change your life, only to neglect all your aspirations a day later? This is actually . We conflate thinking about potential action with taking said action. due to cognitive distortion A similar problem arises if you work toward too many goals at once. You see your to-do list and think, "Wow, I've got plans to achieve so many great things. I'm really making progress here." But is it really progress if, at the end of the year, you've doubled your to-do list and completed a total of zero tasks? (Hint: no, it isn't. A twelve-month vacation would have been more productive.) The Einstein Principle to the Rescue I know – you're feeling attacked. I am too. But this is where the Einstein Principle can help. Einstein's theory was that, if you ruthlessly cut down your to-do list and focus on just one or two projects, you can achieve more in the long run. This is because: You are narrowing your energy and resources to one task, so you can devote more time and effort to it. It's like what I wrote about last week; multi-tasking is a myth and an energy sap. If you focus on one task, you can get infinitely more done. You're also mitigating the risk of overwhelm and distraction. Staring down a to-do list of twelve projects is daunting – but staring at just one or two is much less so. And finally: You stand a better chance of completing your tasks if they are few in number and specific in scope. Otherwise, you'll be running around like a headless chicken for months (or years) with no end goal in sight. Do you think Einstein would have come up with his groundbreaking theory of General Relativity if he'd been trying to solve world hunger at the same time? Or attempting to discover a new particle? I'm guessing not. A Disclaimer Of course, it's not always realistic to focus on one major project at a time. Einstein's relationships and personal life suffered greatly while he was in the throes of discovery. His marriage faltered, and his hair turned white. (Don't start me on Frankenstein. He practically forgot to eat, drink, or sleep for two years while he robbed graves and stitched body parts together. His family and friends literally had to stage an intervention.) I would never suggest devoting 100 percent of your time and energy to a work project without mixing in some hobbies, nor would I suggest sacrificing your health or relationships to reach a goal. But if you want to achieve something great, the Einstein Principle can help. Identify one or two major projects and focus on them like a laser beam. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish in a short time – and how much better your life becomes when it is focused on one central goal. How To Use the Principle Cal Newport hit the nail on the head with his instructions for this principle. In essence, he recommends that you write three separate to-do lists: Professional, Extracurricular, and Personal. The Professional column is for anything work or study related. For example: write a business plan, develop a new product line, or take an online course. The Extracurricular column is for activities that don't necessarily relate to your current job or career but are important nonetheless. This might include reading books, taking part in community activities, or joining clubs and organizations. And finally, the Personal column is for those things you need to do to look after yourself: exercising, getting enough sleep, eating well, and starting a new morning routine. Once these lists are complete (no less than two items per list), here's the main part of the process: Choose your non-negotiables. From each list, which are the two goals that absolutely must get done? They will be tasks that other people are relying on you for, or that your mental or physical health depends on. Cull your non-essentials. This will be anything you can reasonably afford to put on hold without consequences. Prioritize your remaining tasks. Now that you know what must get done and what can wait, make a plan for the remaining tasks to get done in the next 1-2 weeks. Suddenly, your to-do list is much more manageable. You aren't going on a wild goose chase trying to do everything at once. You have a clear plan of attack, and you know exactly what needs to get done, in what order, and by when. Find Your Theory of Relativity I genuinely believe that focus is an ability most people lack in the 21st century. I don't mean working on a task solidly for more than two hours. I mean real, deep, hyperfocus on one area of life and pursuing it with unwavering commitment. The Einstein Principle is the perfect antidote to the chaos, distraction, and overwhelm that plague us on a daily basis.
