For those just started with Deno, and those who work in the frontend, you might be having the thought, "Can I build something as complex as a NextJS or Create-React-App (CRA) application using Deno?" If you need help with anything JS, feel free to reach out through (a video-chat platform) or Superpeer Twitter. I was thinking the same as I wanted to try Deno because of its better shareability  resulting from the ability of running an application directly from a URL (The Deno compiler supports running JS/TS files from a URL and it also supports imports from a URL, resulting in extreme portability.) I looked if any existing solutions, articles were there online, but only found , which built an SSR'ed React application using some complex techniques, nothing simple like getting started with NextJS or CRA. this article So, through my searches online, I ended up at , which has one of the coolest landing page animations ever. AlephJS Aleph is a Zero-Config, Typescript driven React framework, just like NextJS, the only drawback being that Aleph is still very much in Alpha. So to get a true Next-like React experience inside of Deno, let's get started with AlephJS. It has much of the same conventions, such as: A directory for creating URL routes /pages Direct support in pages .js, .jsx, .ts, .tsx A directory for serving static assets like video, audio, or image files /public A folder for serving Javascript or Typescript files as serverless APIS. /pages/api Getting Started To be able to use AlephJS, you need Deno installed as a pre-requisite. You can see how to install and get started with Deno in my . previous article here For getting started with Aleph, you need to first install the Aleph CLI by running deno install -A -f -n aleph https://deno.land/x/aleph@v0.3.0-alpha.1/cli.ts After installation, you can run aleph -h to check whether it got installed correctly. Building React Applications with Deno and AlephJS

Public WiFi has become ubiquitous due to a growing consumer demand for always-on connectivity. While 4G and 5G connections are rising in number, nothing beats the stability and speed of WiFi internet. Unfortunately, hackers know this as well, and most public WiFi hotspots are routinely compromised by malicious actors aiming to capture personally identifiable information (PII) for misuse. This raises the twin concerns of security and privacy when using Public WiFi, which have yet to be answered by security experts. The most common advice given by these experts is to avoid connecting to public WiFi altogether. While this will, of course, solve the problem, it merely sidesteps the discussion at the cost of convenience. Turn Off your WiFi — NOW Even if you’re never connected to a public network but your WiFi chip is turned on, you are still open to getting hacked. This is because WiFi chips intermittently broadcast connection requests to all nearby WiFi routers. A compromised network can allow anybody to sit in between the router and the computer system to read, edit, and relay any information. (Source: sdtechi) Thus the best security advice available at the moment is to keep your WiFi completely switched off at all times, just in case a compromised public network comes in the range of your computer system or mobile device. If that’s not inconvenient then nothing is! For other services, such as social media, users are willing to forego disadvantages to continue enjoying the convenience. To demonstrate this, look no further than Facebook and Google. They mine and process our personal data by the terabytes but most consumers don’t bat an eyelid because: Most users don’t realize these companies mine our browsing data behind the scenes Consumers trust these companies because they are large, regulated multinationals Facebook and Google add a huge degree of convenience to our lives and we accept the disadvantages that go with it For WiFi, however, the problem is somewhat different, as the disadvantages are much more severe, as breaches of security and privacy by malicious actors can have disastrous consequences such as theft, fraud or reputational damage. Here users value the convenience as well of course, but not at any cost! I can’t turn off WiFi forever. What should I do? You should have a look at the following best practices to secure your Internet device: 1. Force HTTPS The HTTPS protocol is a secure protocol that ensures the security and privacy of all communications within the protocol on the browser. To force automatic HTTPS connections, follow these steps on the chrome browser. Enable Google Chrome support by typing into your address bar, then from the drop-down menu. HSTS is HTTPS Strict Transport Security, a way for websites to elect to always use HTTPS. chrome://net-internals/ select HSTS 2. Turn off Sharing Media sharing is enabled by default on most computer systems for faster transfer of data between people connected on the same network. This is helpful for home networks where you might want to quickly share a file with a family member. Statistically, most of us spend more time outside our house than inside, though, which means that sharing can be turned off safely without much impact on convenience. 3. Invest in a Good VPN Virtual Private Networks are distant servers that allow you to route your data through various geographies before it reaches its destination. Naturally, low latency is desirable in such cases. While some VPNs allow free access to throttled down internet speeds, you can pay a small fee to unlock the faster plans. The only downside to using VPNs is the fact that your data trail will be visible to the VPN controller. This means that unscrupulous VPNs can collect user data without the user’s knowledge. However, despite the technical flaws, people pay their hard earned money to VPNs for data privacy. Is there no better solution out there? Actually, there is, if we were to believe Valley-based entrepreneur Suruchi Gupta. Her team is developing a crypto-project aimed to solve this very issue. They plan to: Wificoin , Incentivize people to share their WiFi and thereby monetize unused bandwidth Secure public hotspots by creating separate encrypted channels for connections Create a seamless and automatic surfing experience, without the need for usernames, passwords or agreeing to terms and conditions. The only requirement is to install an app once and for all Their protocol leverages blockchain and a proprietary technology protocol to enable simple and secure sharing of WiFi. Anybody who adds their WiFi hotspot to the Wificoin network will earn a passive stream of income. For example, if you share your Internet connection via their protocol, any user can securely and privately connect to the Internet and pay you a small fee for the bandwidth. While the host is incentivized to share, the consumer gets access to the reliable Internet on the go. Win-win! The premise of the company is based on the sharing economy, the concept pioneered by companies like Airbnb and Uber. In the blockchain space, another project that taps into the idea of the sharing economy is Filecoin, which raised over $250 million for a plan to tokenize our unused storage space. I worked in the affiliate marketing team: collaborated with bloggers, managed giveaways, promoted special projects like the . Thanks to connecting with people who make their living off writing valuable content, I learned a bit of everything in a digital world: SEO, content marketing, branding — you name it. Most importantly, I learned to communicate my message in a very short form and deliver value in a first place. I bet everyone who tried to promote their own project knows that writing an email that people will actually read (and answer too!) is almost an art nowadays. When you bootstrap the development, every challenge is the biggest until you overcome it. We gathered as a team of 6. All of us are like-minded people who can spend their time actually building the app instead of arguing on details or (God forbid!) boardroom rows. This challenge required a bit of luck, and luck is very important when starting a business. Every day, we found the motivation to move forward, especially in the early stage, when our future was uncertain and we didn’t know if Y-Productive will survive. How did we manage it? We have the goal of helping people in a certain way. Helping people who are like us, struggling to live better live by doing a better job with minimum time spent on bullshit like scrolling news feed or constantly switching between tasks. It’s not a promotional thing. Having a goal that serves as the North Star actually helps to find your way in the dark. Step by step, we moved from an MVP to a beta and from the beta — constantly gathering feedback from our users and deciding what we can implement considering our resources. It required persistence and patience. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out? Learn to calculate and measure the consequence of your decisions. It will help you to minimize the possible negative outcome and improve the chances of positive. Help your luck to help you, by working on good opportunities. Hence, never be afraid to take a step forward, then another one. Slowly moving forward is better than if you do nothing. I’ll not share growth hacks, SEO tactics, and other bullshit because if something works for one, it will not necessarily work for you. Experimentation and flexibility to adjust is the key. We ourselves are yet to discover the best advice and to prove it with experience, so I prefer learning instead of teaching at this point myself. Good ones, bad ones, crazy ones, total-copy-of-popular-app ones and even those website-in-an-app ones. So even though I am not a designer myself, I know a thing or two about app designs and I would love to share with you, to save some nerves for your app users. Appzio First thing first… Аn app is not its design The other day I had a call with a client that started with, “I want to build an app that has same features as” one of the biggest applications on the app stores. Amidst the talk he adds excitedly, “I have bought this template that shows the features.” As many others, he feels that when a similar design has worked for company XYZ — it will work for him, too and he will have multiple users from day one. Normally what a good app developer does at this point is to point out that the design shows some of the features, yet not all. Also, what made the other app successful is a combination of ability to be appealing to users & bring convenience + successful user acquisition funnel + good user retention practices + constant iterations based on feedback (among others). And monetary expectations can also vary depending on the experience and the median scale in a particular region. To take all of these factors into consideration and develop a model that works well for people across different regions is a challenge we are working hard on to ace. Introduction Create a simple React App Migrating the app to Redux Flow of Data in a Redux App The Redux App - explanation Conclusion Introduction Redux is a predictable state container for JavaScript apps - as stated in Redux official documentation.  When I started learning Redux, I found it difficult to comprehend the concept and implementation. I skimmed through many articles on the net but could not find a satisfactory answer. Most of the articles either explain creating apps with Redux or converting React apps with no basic code to Redux.  I could not find something that explained how a working React app can be modified to use Redux with the same functionality. In this article, I have made an attempt to do exactly that.  I will first explain how to create a React app that has minimal functionality of creating and deleting a list of books.  This app is similar to a much-publicized ‘todo’ app.  You can use it to create a Todo app also by just renaming the component and variable names. Create a simple React App With this introduction, let us dive into hands-on.  Open your code editor and type ‘npx create-react-app react-redux’.  You may change the name of the app from react-redux to whatever you like. Once the app creation process completes, run ‘npm start’ at your console and confirm that the app is working fine with a gently rotating React logo. export default BookList; Migrating the app to Redux Now that we have created a React app that displays a form, accepts books, displays the list and deletes any, we have a fully functional React app. Next, we will refactor the same app and see how we can use Redux to maintain the data of the app.  Please remember, the purpose of this article is not to teach React but to teach how to understand and use Redux in a React application. Before proceeding further, please remember we use Redux to maintains the ‘ ’ or ‘ ’ of a React application.  In this article we are going to do exactly that, moving the state of React app into Redux. state data Flow of data in a Redux App We shall try to understand the basics of Redux from the diagram above. On top right there is a box ‘ ’ in which the data flows from top component to bottom and it is held in ‘state’ of the root component. React App If you look at the bottom right diagram which shows ‘ ’, the data is not stored in the components but it is stored in a single place called ‘ ’.  The data received by the components from the external interface is sent to Store using ‘ ’, and the ‘ ’ function connects the component sending the data and the Store. Redux App Store mapDispatchToProps connect The data being sent to the ‘ ’ passes through two stages viz. Store ‘ ’ and ‘ ’. The ‘ ’ is an object that specifies what type of action is needed to be done on the data and what are the other parameters for that action. Then this data is passed on to ‘ ’. is a function which performs the required action, i.e. either storing the data in the required format or creating a new set of data and replacing the old data  or fetching data from the Store. This is how data is modified because in React state is not mutated. Actions Reducers Actions Reducer Reducer Now we shall briefly look at the new terms used above. The store has the following responsibilities: Holds application state; Allows access to state via ; getState() Allows state to be updated via ; dispatch(action) Registers listeners via ; subscribe(listener) Handles unregistering of listeners via the function returned by . subscribe(listener) But these things are handled internally and we will not generally use those methods explicitly. Store is the place within the app where the data is stored.  It is similar to ‘State’ in React Apps. Store is not accessible to the components of the App directly. Components have to connect to the Store making use of two methods. The first one is mapDispatchToProps which sends data from the components to Store and the second one is mapStateToProps which receives data from the Store into the component as prop. But these two functions need connect() which connects Store and components. When you use connect, it is followed by the name of the component being connected in parentheses. There are two more things, viz. Action and Reducer.  Action is an object which specifies the inputs needed to an operation of fetching or sending data to Store. Reducer is a method which uses Action details and performs the required operation on the Store. The components of the app are segregated into ‘components’ and ‘containers’ folders. We keep presentation components i.e. components that have a user interface under components folder and the components that deal with the Store are kept under containers folder. In addition to these, we create a folder called ‘actions’ and the action objects are placed in this folder. We also create ‘reducers’ folder and keep the reducer objects under this folder. This is done so that Redux can pick up the needed components from these locations without specifying where to look for them. The Redux App Before we start refactoring our code, it is advised to make a copy of the working React app you have created just now. To begin with, let us add redux to our app by running the following commands from the terminal: npm install redux

To which 🕵🏻 suggested having a way to play with all the CSS properties similar to this🤯. Gautham Super Power` Gautham Then came the hackathon day where 🙋🏻, 🧔 and 👼 planned to make: I Arsh Siddhant 🦸‍♀️ (everybody was kind enough to let me name it only 😛), a chrome extension that will allow editing CSS directly on the website without even opening console. 1. Super Power Super Power While we were executing this plan of ours and talking to people around us, someone suggested having an ability to 🐣 2. Copy the changed CSS and inserting it into our code on editor. During the mid evaluation, to our utter surprise judges showed a great interest in the idea and 👨🏻‍🎓 told that it will be really great if we could devise a way of Pranjal 🐥 3. Versioning the changes done using Super Power. It took a long discussion and heated argument to come up with the way to do this. We devised a way to commit these changes and pull other person’s changes. 👼 implemented it while 🙋🏻and 🧔 were sleeping joining 8 chairs each. While we started on with just a document.designMode what we got at the end was something completely different. Introduction It is hard to imagine that one small company can completely transform the way we shop. But that is exactly what has done. In 2007, e-commerce was still considered a niche business and most Indians did their shopping offline. Internet was taking over the world and Steve Jobs had just launched the world’s first iPhone in 2007 which was about to disrupt the entire smartphone industry in the years to come. Flipkart Two software engineers in India, and did notice the changing dynamic of technology and realized the potential of e-commerce. Even though there were only 50 million internet users in India at the time, they knew that with smartphones coming into the picture, it was only a matter of time when more Indians will be connected to the internet. They wanted to take this opportunity to create an online shopping platform that would take India’s shopping experience to the next level. Sachin Bansal Binny Bansal Fast forward to today, India has more than and the number of people shopping online has increased significantly. What started as a two-man mission to create India’s most trusted online shopping platform has transpired into Flipkart, which is India’s leading e-commerce platform offering a catalogue of more than 80 million products across 80 categories to more than 100 million customers. 570 million internet users In this article, we will examine the story of Flipkart and how Sachin and Binny were able to build India’s e-commerce industry from scratch. How did they meet? Before we start, you should know that if Sachin and Binny had been better students, there was a good chance that Flipkart would have never happened. Thankfully for us, they were not. Back in 2005, Sachin and Binny were pursuing their B.Tech from IIT Delhi. While most students had gone home during the summer break, Sachin and Binny were stuck in college as they had failed to complete their projects on time. It was while working on their projects in the same lab that the two met for the first time. On a side note, it was probably the best summer for Binny, although he didn’t know it at the time, but not only did he meet his future business partner Sachin but also his life partner Trisha at the same lab. However, Sachin and Binny only became friends after they had moved to Bangalore for their jobs along with a couple of other guys from their college. At the time, Sachin was working at a company called Techspan and Binny was working with Sarnoff. Sachin had started working with Amazon in 2006 and Binny followed him in Amazon later in 2007. Origins of Flipkart Soon the two got bored with their jobs at and started playing with ideas. Being fascinated with e-commerce, they decided to start a comparison-shopping website. Their plan was to create a website that would help users to compare prices of products across different websites and help them get the best value for their money. Amazon As they started looking at different e-commerce websites, they soon realized that all the websites were really bad. They knew that they would never purchase from those poorly designed websites and they didn’t expect others to do that either. While they had to shelf their idea for a comparison-shopping website, they started thinking if they could build a better e-commerce website and provide a better shopping experience to their customers. The duo was confident that being technology enthusiasts they could do it. Without wasting any time, the two quit Amazon, pooled together Rs 4 lakh and started Flipkart in September of 2007. They had decided to sell books on their platform as it was easy to list, ship and find vendors as compared to other categories like electronics or fashion which would cost them a lot of money. The journey begins As they started looking for vendors to list books on their platform, they soon found out that it was not going to be as easy as they had thought. People still did not understand the internet and doing business on the internet was not something that was very popular, so most vendors were highly skeptical and didn’t trust their business model. However, the duo remained persistent and managed to convince a few vendors to take a chance on them. With vendors convinced, they launched their website in October of 2007. By the end of October, they had received their first order from a young techie named VVK Chandra who lived in Mahbubnagar in Telangana (previously the state of Andhra Pradesh). Their excitement from their first order soon made them anxious as their vendors told them that the book was unavailable. After feverishly searching for the book all across Bangalore, the duo managed to get hold of the book and successfully delivered their first order. With that order, Flipkart was officially in business. At this time, there were barely any good e-commerce websites in India and the founders were set on putting their customers first and wanted to use technology to provide them with a better shopping experience. Their efforts to deliver their first order showed their commitment towards their customers and it would serve them well in the future.  Being a two-man startup, they took care of everything from developing their website to delivering books. They had managed to deliver 20 shipments in 2007 itself. Within six months the startup was operationally profitable and in 2008, they had moved into a 2BHK apartment in Kormangala, which would serve as their office for the coming years. Slowly, their business started to boom and by the end of the financial year of 2009, Flipkart had managed to sell books worth 40 million rupees. Flipkart was a hit with book lovers and investors were starting to take notice. In 2009, Flipkart got its first venture capital investment of $1 million from . By the end of 2009, the startup already had more than 150 employees and 3 offices across India. Accel In such a short span of time, Sachin and Binny had managed to grow their company at a tremendous pace and they had also developed their own personalities as entrepreneurs. Sachin was good at dreaming big and was the man behind ideas and vision of Flipkart, while Binny, a shy individual was known as the operations guys. They had found in each other a great partner who complemented each other’s skills. Whatever Sachin dreamed, Binny made it a reality. India’s e-commerce was still a niche business and a large population was still hesitant to shop online. However, Flipkart had built a brand of trust among its loyal customers and continued to instil confidence by providing 24×7 customer support and their growth continued. But things were going to change drastically, once came on board as their new partner with its first investment of $10 million in 2010. Tiger Global Now that Flipkart had already become a platform of choice for book lovers in India, the startup was ready to take its next step. With new partners and more investment, Flipkart was ready to dive into the electronics category. So they started selling mobiles in 2010. But months went by and while book sales continued to grow, mobile sales remained stagnant. It was clear that customers were willing to pay small amounts of money like Rs 500 rupees online but they were not quite ready to pay large sums of money like Rs 10,000 or 15,000 for mobiles without first touching and feeling their products. Flipkart still had a long way to go to build that amount of trust among its customers. This problem forced the founders to think differently. And they were able to come up with a brilliant idea of introducing Cash on Delivery. Flipkart was among one of the first e-commerce startups to introduce cash on delivery option for its customers. The founders were hell-bent on building trust among Indian consumers and they doubled down on that dream by introducing no questions asked return policy and followed it up by a replacement policy. They were willing to sacrifice growth for customer satisfaction. Today, these three features are offered by every e-commerce website in India but it was unheard of back in 2010 or 2011. Customers loved these options as they offered them flexibility in paying and buying products on their own terms. Thanks to Sachin and Binny, Indians who were afraid of shopping online were now warming up to this novel idea of online shopping and getting the products delivered right at their doorsteps. Now just like offline shopping, they had the option of either just returning the product if they didn’t like it or get a complete refund. This was a game-changer and Flipkart’s sales started to grow even more rapidly then they had ever grown. From merely, 40 million rupees in revenues in the financial year of 2009, Flipkart expanded its revenues to 750 million rupees by the end of the financial year of 2011. Almost a 20X growth. Soon there was no stopping Flipkart, they had cracked the code to Indian consumers. They continued expanding across categories and money came pouring in from investors. By 2012, Flipkart had already become a unicorn. It was probably the second unicorn in India after InMobi. In fact, the term unicorn only became popular after it was coined in 2013 by Aileen Lee, who is the founder of Cowboy Ventures.  Flipkart became a company that other startups would look up to in the coming years, while Sachin and Binny became the face of India’s growing startup ecosystem. Competing with Amazon Flipkart was the undisputed leader of e-commerce space in India. The company was a big reason for enabling millions of customers to shop online. However, things were about to change as Amazon entered India in 2013. Apart from Amazon, Flipkart was also going to face some competition from another Indian e-commerce startup . While Snapdeal was still small compared to Flipkart, Amazon was going to be a force to reckon with. Snapdeal This did not deter Sachin and Binny, as they knew their customers intimately and had built a brand of trust which was supported by their technology platform that had been built over years of customer feedback. Their confidence was shared by their investors who helped Flipkart raise nearly $2 billion in 2014 alone. One of their oldest investors Tiger Global and Accel continued to put their faith in the company. Armed with a $2 billion war chest, Flipkart acquired in 2014 to expand into fashion e-commerce. Later in 2016, Flipkart acquired another fashion e-commerce startup to scale rapidly in online fashion commerce. This proved to be a smart move by the founders as they realized they were better off acquiring two of the leading fashion e-commerce platforms rather than building one on their own, which would have cost them time and money. Myntra Jabong With Amazon competing for the market in India, Flipkart didn’t have the luxury of time that it had during the early days. Thanks to that acquisition, Flipkart is now a leader in fashion e-commerce space with more than 60% of market share. Flipkart’s ability to understand the Indian market and the experience of their founders and team in creating a company from the ground had given them the advantage over Amazon which helped them to stay competitive and ahead of Amazon. As of 2018, Flipkart remains India’s leading online retailer with a , compared to 31.2% of Amazon. After adding the sales of Myntra and Jabong, Flipkart’s total market share increases to 38.3%. market share of 31.9% Flipkart Failures With all of Flipkart’s success, the founders had to face a lot of challenges and suffer more than a few failures as well. It was their ability to experiment quickly and scale what worked rapidly, which helped them build Flipkart into an e-commerce giant it is today. In 2011, Flipkart had acquired a digital content platform Mime360 and tried to expand into online music streaming with the launch of its music streaming service Flyte in 2012. Piracy was a major issue at the time and there was no dearth of new torrent websites offering free music popping up every day. With numerous online platforms available for downloading free music, Flipkart’s latest experiment was bound to fail. Flipkart had to shut down Flyte in 2013. Before the company found success in digital payments through , it tried to launch its own payment gateway called PayZippy in 2013. Unable to onboard merchants, its payment gateway was shut down in 2014. PhonePe Then there was Flipkart’s app-only experiment where the company blocked access to its website for mobile users and directed them to download its app. While the majority of their traffic came from mobile users, this move was still unsuccessful and Flipkart had to reinstate its website, giving users back the option of accessing both mobile website and app. Walmart-Flipkart Acquisition Despite all the setbacks, Flipkart founders continued to focus on what their customers wanted and that helped them to make Flipkart into one of India’s most successful startups. However, in 2018, Sachin and Binny’s decade long journey at Flipkart ended after Walmart acquired Flipkart for $16 billion and valuing the company at over $20 billion. Sachin had served as Flipkart’s CEO until 2016 when Binny took over the reins and remained the CEO until their exit from Flipkart in 2018. While their exit was seen as controversial by many media outlets and people in the Indian Startup Ecosystem, the two have moved on to start their own ventures. Sachin went on to start to focus on India’s growing fintech space, while Binny is using his experience at Flipkart to help startup founders scale and grow their business through his latest venture called . Navi Technologies xto10x Technologies Now that Flipkart doesn’t need to look for outside investment, there is no doubt that the company will continue to grow tremendously and help Walmart establish a stronghold in India. Conclusion Even though the founders might have left Flipkart, let us not forget that Flipkart wouldn’t have reached where it is today without the long term vision of Sachin Bansal and operational skills of Binny Bansal who worked at making Sachin’s lofty dreams a reality. So what is it that these founders did right that most entrepreneurs do wrong? Firstly, it is clear that Sachin and Binny always put the needs of their customers first. They knew from the get-go that Indian customers lacked trust in e-commerce websites. They built the trust of their customers by understanding their needs and giving them exactly what they wanted. They already had an engineering background, which helped them built a website that was better than their few competitors and which only improved as more feedback they got from their customers. Things were kept simple for the customers by introducing options like cash on delivery, replacement and refund policies. Apart from focusing on their customers, they had kept Flipkart profitable before they went to look for outside investment. During the first two years, they had grown Flipkart out of the revenues they generated from their sales. They proved to their investors that this was a sustainable business, which made it easy for them to get investment. This approach is different from most entrepreneurs, who go looking for investment before they have even tested their business model. However, the story of Flipkart is different today, as the company is losing billions of rupees as it competes with Amazon by offering heavy discounts and cashbacks. Flipkart had its own set of failures but that did not deter the founders to take a step back but they kept on experimenting until they found the winning formula. It was their persistence and bouncing back from failures that helped them discover new and innovative methods to keep building and growing Flipkart. Today, Flipkart is a huge company with massive revenues and thousands of employees. However, Sachin and Binny are still two passionate engineers who are just looking for new problems to solve, even if their journeys have taken them on different roads after a decade of building Flipkart. Books to Billions: How Sachin and Binny Bansal Built Flipkart to 100+ Million Customers 

I've been working as a Software Developer for the last out of which I spent in Berlin. Like many developers out there, moving abroad for work is a personal dream, and most people materialize that dream by doing a Masters from abroad, and working from there. For me, the story was a little different. This is for people currently working and residing outside of Europe, who are looking for jobs in Berlin/Europe. There are many opportunities here, as the startup scene in Berlin is on the rise. 5 years, a year and a half I did not want to study further as I couldn’t actually think of a field/course I would want to become a “master” in. 😉 My inclination towards practical knowledge has always superseded the theoretical knowledge. And I believe that there are a few things you can only learn through experience. I had this dream when I was a child, the dream of moving out of the country, living abroad, the thought of that always made me really excited, and I knew I would make it happen someday. Well, that’s enough philosophy for today. A Little Bit of Backstory It all started after I finished my B.Tech in 2015. The year of finally applying all the knowledge gained in the last 18–20 years. It was my first time being an employee getting professional development training and email writing sessions. 2015–2016 Working at my first job was so much fun, met a lot of nice people. Office parties, celebrating for something we did not even know we achieved, but who says no to a party?After almost 8 months of working there, I realized that I was not getting enough knowledge from the work I was doing, it has become a little bit of a routine and I hate routine just like many others. I decided to switch. I started preparing. While I was looking for resources to study, I bumped into this book named As a newcomer, I did not have much experience with giving interviews. Reading the book helped me understand a lot about giving interviews and what interviewers expect. I applied to a lot of companies, I got replies from a few of them, and eventually gave interviews and got a job. Cracking the Coding Interview . 2016–2018 The new environment was totally making me feel proud and I felt super nice. It was a turning point in my life. I was working on technologies and platforms that I had never heard of. I was getting chances to work in different programming languages. I worked on Android and Backend development.I got opportunities to get exposed to people from all around the world. I worked on different projects with different teams and in different cities.But as we all know that change in life is the only constant. I decided to move on. The Plan Ahead I decided this time to apply abroad. Glassdoor, in my opinion, has the most legit job openings. I started looking into jobs in cities where I had some connections, and it narrowed down to Berlin. My initial idea was to apply to startups as I thought it would be a little bit easier to crack those. I started preparing. I focused on three things: 1. Coding and Data Structures When you are applying for a software developer job, this is something that is quite obvious. You should be able to solve algorithmic problems in the language you are comfortable with. I spent about a week going through simple challenges on HackerRank, solving as many problems as I could. I started small focusing only on the simple problems at first and then going to problems which were moderate. 2. Architecture Design/Data Modelling This is one of my favourite parts of the interview process. In my opinion, this one is very important for any developer to learn and understand as a design decision can make or break your app/product, technically speaking. I read tech blogs from , , , etc. which helped me a lot to understand the problems big startups are facing. Netflix Airbnb Spotify 3. Previous projects This one is very obvious and mostly involves talking in length and breadth about the work that you did. Proving yourself to be a potential teammate. The questions for this section could be either something specific, like a skill on your resume or about a project. And one of the questions could involve asking you about a critical situation from your past projects and what you did to handle that. The Execution After getting responses from several companies, they send out a take-at-home coding challenge and you get 2 days to finish that in general. One of the problem statements could be something like the following: “We would like to have a restful API for our statistics. Create API is to calculate real-time statistics from the last 60 seconds. This API is called every time a transaction is made. It is also the sole input of this rest API. And another API to return all the transactions for a certain period.” The solution to this is here . After the submission of the coding challenge and cracking it, a few interviews are scheduled. One thing that I always do is that I read about the company and the work they are doing. I look at their blog posts to get updated on the company’s recent advances. There is a series of interview rounds, starting from technical rounds that are focused more on the coding challenge submission. For a backend developer like myself, there could be questions regarding , , , sometimes , and general architectural questions. Spring Boot Postgres Docker Kubernetes After that, there are cultural rounds and general interviews with maybe the CTO or VP of the company. All the interviews can occur in a single day or can span across several days depending on the availability of the interviewers. So, that's how a general interview process looks for many companies here in Berlin. I went through many interviews before I came here. It definitely is not easy, and a lot of prep is required. It brings together young girls and women in technology and encourages them to share their experiences. What started out as a networking event has transformed into a strong and supportive community with chapters across the world. In India, induction into this programme is meant only for female students either in their sophomore year of B.Tech. or first year of M.Tech, or a similar degree. How did I join the Codess community? The Microsoft team looks for not just one’s technical skills but a culmination of professional characteristics consisting of but not limited to creativity, teamwork, communication and leadership qualities, to be induced into the programme, which they gauge in multiple phases. The Codess team visits some of the top-tier engineering campuses in India, and talks to the female students of the college about the procedure of the programme. Phase 1: Online Coding Test This is a simple online coding test, hosted on any online coding platform like Mettl, in early March. It consists of four coding questions, which in my experience, can be aced with thorough understanding of basic data structures and algorithms. 4–5 students from each college are selected on the basis of their performance on this test and their GPA, for the next round. Phase 2: Microsoft Codess Event Perhaps the most exciting part of the process, the Codess Networking event and Hackathon, a fully-sponsored two-day event (at either Hyderabad or Bangalore, on the basis of your availability) where you get an opportunity to network with Microsoft leaders and other stellar students from top colleges across India, experience a hands on technology workshop and participate in a mentored hackathon (Oh, and did I mention, an opportunity to bag an internship at Microsoft after the sophomore year of college!). of the event started with a Fireside chat with women leaders who talked about their journey in technology, and in Microsoft, a hands-on Garage activity followed by a networking session over snacks, and concluded with a discussion on the themes for the ideathon. Day 1 was the D-day, the day of the ideathon. We were grouped with students of different colleges, urged to step out of our comfort zones. Each team was assigned a mentor, who primarily mediated the group discussions and shaped the wet clay of our crude ideas. Each participant was judged not only on the basis of the technical credibility of thought, but also their communication skills, creativity, ability to accommodate other ideas and teamwork. Each team then gave a project elevator pitch to the judges, who selected the top 4 teams, who presented their projects to the entire audience at the event. Day 2 And… The best part: Internship Offers! Approximately 30 participants were extended offers to intern at Microsoft (either Hyderabad or Bangalore) for the summer of 2019. One thing to keep in mind here, is that it is not a rat-race, your teammates are not your competitors, so asserting yourself over the others could do more damage than good. There is no cap on selections from a particular team, so being your authentic self will take you a long way. The participants who are not offered internships receive 2 month long mentoring for interview preparations, so everyone walks away with something! Final Destination: SWE Internship @ Microsoft IDC, Bangalore I was a Foundry intern at the swanky new Microsoft IDC at Bangalore. Working in a team of four (mostly five: 4 SWE interns + 1 Product design intern), we were assigned a SWE mentor, a Program Manager and a SWE manager. As a Foundry intern, we were expected to build a proposed project from scratch, and boy, did the presentations and document reviews keep us busy! But the entire ecosystem is designed in a way to nurture and help you thrive, not only as a professional but also as an individual. The ‘growth mindset’ work culture is simply amazing, with all employees willing to help you and assist your learning process. In the 8 weeks at Microsoft, I formed a great network of professionals and made friends for a lifetime. All in all, the experience has been nothing short of a fun adventure ride! What is ETL 💭? is short for , three database functions that are combined into one tool to pull data out of one database and place it into another database. ETL e xtract, t ransform, l oad is the process of from a database. In this stage, the data is collected, often from multiple and different types of sources. Extract reading data is the process of from its previous form into the form it needs to be in so that it can be placed into another database. Transformation occurs by using rules or lookup tables or by combining the data with other data. Transform converting the extracted data is the process of into the target database Load writing the data In the sample apps given by hasura, serverless-etl app is one among them. I will be showing how to implement it using Next.js . This is the to the example given by hasura. link The main features of this app will be :- Add Book to the database From the database data is saved in an algolia index Search for the book in the algolia index How will we implement it ? We will be using graphql mutations to insert book details into the database and when something is inserted into the database an event is triggered which will update the algolia index with the inserted data from the database and this data can be retrieved from the algolia index when searched. That’s it! it is that simple. Pre-requisites: Algolia account Hasura GraphQL Engine (HGE) installation Now that you are ready, Lets begin! Setting up basic Next.js project and Graphql Engine First step is to create a next.js project using . This command will create a basic boilerplate for a next.js project on which we will be working on. yarn create next-app etl-example Add the packages and scripts which are not present in your package.json file from the gist below and install it using . yarn install Next setup a Hasura GraphQL engine using the the deploy option and note down the deployed url and create a file in the root folder with the following code one-click config.js replace the with the url of the deployed hasura engine. Add authentication headers in the config object if you have any. herokuapp-url Creating Book Table We will be having a single table name which will have the details of the book like title and author. For that we have to go to the Hasura GraphQL engine console and create the following table book book table Setting up Algolia Index Next step is to setup an Algolia Index, For that follow the instructions given below. Sign-up for Algolia account Go to the Dashboard, Click on tab on the left sidebar Indices Click on button New Index Name it as demo_serverless_etl_app Goto tab on the sidebar API Keys Copy the (we'll call this ) Application ID **ALGOLIA_APP_ID** Click on tab and then click button All API Keys New API Key Give description as server key Choose the index demo_serverless_etl_app Select under the ACL section Add records Click and copy this API key from the list (we'll call it ) Generate **ALGOLIA_ADMIN_API_KEY** Setting up webhooks For adding the data into the algolia index when some data is inserted into the database, we will be needing a webhook which will be triggered on data insertion and this webhook will add the inserted data into the algolia index. For having a single api endpoint there is no point of having a seperate server. What we can do is setup a node server and add the api endpoint for the webhook and route all other url’s to the next.js handler. For the node server we have to create a file named in the root directory and copy the content from below. The route will be used to trigger an event when data is inserted into the table to add it into the algolia index. Add your algolia APP_ID and the ADMIN_API_KEY in the empty space present in the code. server.js /webhook Building the front-end Next we will setup our page where we will take in the author name and book title which will be added to the database and also a search bar where you can search for any book. Create a file named inside folder and add the following code and also replace the algolia api variables with your values. index.js post Search Component The component provided by package will do the search magic automatically. You do not have to worry about coding all those searching stuff 😉. The component will render the searchbox and component will render the results of your search InstantSearch react-instantsearch-dom SearchBox Hits Deploy Now that wehave the server ready, deploy it anywhere for example and you will get a url for the deployed server note that down, let it be <SERVER_URL>. glitch Creating an Event Trigger Our next step is to create an event trigger on adding a new book to the database, for this go to tab in Hasura Graphql Engine Console and add a new trigger. Replace with Events <TRIGGER_URL> <SERVER_URL>/webhook. Trigger Now you can open <SERVER_URL> in your browser and see the magic! 😉 And that’s it, we have the ETL-demo ready🙌 . How to implement ETL Application using Hasura GraphQL Engine And Next.js

Before you start this project, i assume that you have basic idea about Next.js and Hasura. In this blog i will be showing how to integrate Next.js and Hasura. What is Next.Js ? is a JavaScript framework created by . It lets you build server-side rendering and static web applications using React. It’s a great tool to build your next website. It has many great features and advantages, which can make Nextjs your first option for building your next web application. Next.js Zeit You don’t need any configuration of webpack or similar to start using Next.js. It comes with its configuration. All you need is to run and start building your application 😃. yarn run dev Now that you are ready let’s get started! How to setup a Next.Js app ? I hope you will be aware of create-react-app, just like that we have create-next-app which will do all the work which is required to setup a Next.js Project 😉. if you are using yarn or npx, there is inbuilt package to create a next.js app which are : yarn create next-app my-app npx create-next-app my-app if you are using npm then package should be installed and using that package a new project can be setup. create-next-app npm install -g create-next-app create-next-app my-app create-next-app As you see in the image with one command all the project files are prepared and ready to go. Once the project is setup the commands which will be required to start and build the project will be shown. To build the project run yarn build To start a local server run yarn dev To start a server in production run yarn start Now that we have our basic project ready, lets setup hasura graphQL engine. We can easily setup hasura-graphQL engine using the the deploy option. Once it is deployed you can go to the deployed url and you will have something like this. one-click Note down the url at the top of the homepage. https://hasuragraphql-engine.herokuapp.com/v1alpha1/graphql Click on Data in the top bar and create a new table as follows author table Add a dummy data in the table Adding a dummy author Once hasura engine is setup, we can move onto connecting Hasura and Next.js. For that we have to install , and graphql-tag next-apollo react-apollo. yarn add graphql-tag next-apollo react-apollo Once the above packages are installed, create a config.js file in the root directory and add the following code Replace the uri with the url to which your deployed engine.This will configure with an to connect to a valid GraphQL server URL. withData httpLink Next task is to wrap your page component with component from so that appropriate data can be fetched while the page is Server Side Rendered.
