My team & I was working on an &VR project — around mid-2017, the most difficult problem that we faced was integrating custom payment gateways to our app that’s built on Unity. To date, many developers used to email me to help them with their payment gateway integration so decided to share it here. AR We had a use case where we have to collect payment from customers and update it in our backend e-commerce store. There were two options for us one was to use available payment solutions with Unity or to build our own integration with other payment gateways. Readymade solutions weren’t suitable because it was accepting payments in USD and even if some in-app purchase solutions were working in our regional currency (INR) it was expensive. so we found a workaround to integrate a custom payment gateway with any Unity app. Below are the steps I used for my app but it should be similar to your use case and for any other payment gateways. I personally feel Razorpay is very comfortable because have very good tech support and they have a feature that other payment gateways don’t have, I will come to that later. So this is how it works. Mostly every payment gateway has some sort of web-based checkout that works just with a browser. we decided to use that. since all we needed was a browser it was easy to open a webview. you can open a website directly from Unity using inbuilt functions but it was easy for me to use this asset — “UniWebView” It’s very easy and straightforward. ( ) Razorpay Standard Web Integration https://razorpay.com/docs/payment-gateway/web-integration/standard/ ( ) UniWebView https://uniwebview.com/ The concept is straightforward, I hosted a PHP page in my server with the standard checkout code and accessed that page from Unity webview. All values like name, price and other dynamic portions are passed as parameters. So we will have a pay now button or checkout button on our hosted page if you feel it as redundant or an extra step you can set auto-trigger whenever that page is loaded. Tada! Now you can collect payment from your customer. The remaining flow depends upon your use case. If you are from India, you might face this problem. we have multi-factor authentication where you have to type One time password or some kind of pin. payment gateways like Stripe, and Paytm rather than redirecting our existing page, open a popup or a new window. this will work in ordinary browsers but since we are using the Unity web view it’s impossible for a popup. In the latest edition of CTOTalk, Raju Shetty, the Head of Engineering at RazorPay gave us deep insights into what it really took for one of India’s biggest payment gateway platforms to scale successfully and witness a whopping in the last year. 500 percent growth Shetty, who has over two decades of experience in system operations, technology architecture, and product strategies, has worked with several startups including Citibank, Flipkart, and Yahoo!, before finally joining RazorPay in 2018. CTOTalk Monthly deep dive with Raju Shetty was a phenomenal success and over 180 participants joined to listen and interact with him. Here are the key takeaways from the CTOTalk session: Never build things that don’t scale In today’s digital world, where new technological trends keep on changing, it doesn’t make sense to invest in technologies that will become irrelevant in less than five years and wouldn’t allow you to scale your infrastructure easily as your business grows in size. The fact is, you will need to evolve and upgrade your systems every 18–24 months no matter what, or you risk falling behind. Rebuilding your organization’s entire technology infrastructure from the ground up just because your current infrastructure cannot scale according to the growing and changing needs of your business can turn out to become incredibly costly, time-consuming, and overwhelming for your employees. Avoid overengineering When your startup is in the bootstrap stage, it can be tempting to build a complex architecture for your application right at the start, to show all that your company can handle. But building a full-fledged complex architecture, without you even having a good understanding of the domain or how your startup will eventually evolve in the coming years can be a dangerous move. After all, you don’t want to build a complex architecture right away only to realize that it doesn’t even work. Instead of overengineering, take a simplistic approach to your tech stack and focus on building functional applications that are compelling for the users. While the end user experience is important, it’s equally important to build a product that truly solves the main pain points of your target customers. When you have a simple application, managing the overall infrastructure, security, and bugs also becomes easier as well. Create an engineering culture Building an engineering culture in the initial stages is crucial for startups that are planning to rapidly grow and scale their operations. A great engineering culture in a company leads to things getting done in the right way and at the right time. It also leads to happier employees and customers as well. To build the right engineering culture, start by taking regular employee feedback to understand what the company can do in order to provide engineers with all the tools and support that they need to perform their best work. You can also choose culture ambassadors from different teams to help reinforce the company’s engineering culture. As your company grows in size, your engineering team may get further and further away from the customers and lose sight of what they are working towards. That is why, it is also a good idea to have the engineering teams talk directly to customers or sit down with customer support teams in order to understand the current challenges faced by customers. Set up councils When your company is still small in size, it is super easy to get everyone into a room and discuss your next plan — whether you want to launch a new feature for customers or craft a roadmap for the next 12 months. But as your company grows in size and the number of employees increases with it, including everyone in the decision-making process can be nothing less than challenging. To resolve this, you can create different councils within the organization so that employees can organize brainstorming sessions and suggest the right way to move forward. You can create a tech council, front-end council, security council, branding council, and more with 5–15 employees in each council. The members of these councils don’t have to all be from the same team. You should approach this as a cross-team collaboration in order to make it a success. Scale your startup the right way It can take a lot to scale your startup successfully and no matter how much you try to prepare for it, you are bound to run into a few roadblocks along the way. It’s all about how you deal with those roadblocks and learn from them. Remember that scalability is a mindset too. Once you have your mind in the game, the whole process becomes all the more easier.

5 Infrastructure Scaling Tips from the CTO of RazorPay

A few years back in 2012, a new card network was launched in India as an alternative to Visa and MasterCard. It was named , which sounds like a combination of Indian currency ' ' and the verb ' '. Within just ten years, it became the biggest competitor in the Indian card market and captured in 2020. It became such a severe threat that Visa about the dominance of RuPay to the US Government. RuPay Rupee to pay 60% of the whole market share complained In 2022, when a majority of the population is using RuPay, completely dominating over Visa and MasterCard, a curiosity arises about the whole process. How did RuPay become so powerful in just a few years? The current article tries to discuss the same. Situation Before RuPay Visa and MasterCard were dominating in the Indian card markets before RuPay. However, they were only concerned with a small percentage of the Indian population, the upper class. Back in the day, they had support for only 55 banks in India, most of which were corporate or private banks. Until recently, the majority of India's population was unaware of such amenities, and even if they were, they couldn't afford them. RBI had mentioned in its 2009-12 about - a domestic card initiative. Then took over from that, renamed it RuPay, and started working on a domestic payment card that would act as an alternative for MasterCard and Visa. It was launched in March 2012 for public usage. vision paper India Card NPCI Before Diving Deep Let's understand a few terms and the working of a traditional card payment system. When you swipe a card in the EPOS system, many things happen in the background, and many parties participate in the process. Involved Parties Three main parties that take part in the transaction are: The bank where the customer has their account. It issues debit cards to its users and holds their funds. Issuing Bank : The bank that funds at the end of the transaction. It is the bank where merchants have their accounts. Acquiring Bank : acquires The card network company acts as an essential intermediary between the whole transaction. The big bulls in the business are VISA, MasterCard and RuPay. Card Networks : Transaction Process The transaction starts when the customer enters the correct password. Then the card network takes charge of the process, which can be summarized in three steps: The card company checks the status of the customer's account. If it is not blocked, empty or suspicious, authorization is considered successful. Authorization : Funds are captured from the customer's bank account, and the merchant is notified through the EPOS system. The deal between customer and merchant is considered done here, but the acquiring bank still has not received funds. Capture : Settlement is the process of transferring money from an issuing bank account to an acquiring bank account. Settlement usually occurs once a business day. At the end of the process, the merchant finally receives the money. Settlement : Merchant Discount Rate However, there is a catch. The merchant does not receive the total amount sent by the customer. During the payment, involved parties take a few percentages. This fee is known as the or . MDR is to blame if you are refused card payments in small businesses. MDR is determined by the type of card used. A debit card is charged 0.9%, and a credit card is charged anywhere from 1% to 3% of the total amount. Merchant Discount Rate MDR If a payment gateway like Stripe, Bill desk, or Razorpay is involved, it charges a small percentage. This charge is called a , usually 0.5% of the overall amount. Payment Service Provider Fee Simply put, when a customer buys something for 10,000 and pays with a card, the merchant will only receive 9,650 rupees. Implementation of RuPay Indian Government and NPCI saw major gaps in this system. The system was not wholly flawed but had major drawbacks and areas of improvement. A large population of India works in an uncategorized sector. They are daily wagers, day to day workers and vendors. Most of them can't even afford a bank account for multiple reasons: minimum balance constraint, complexity in the process of withdrawals and credit, to name a few. As per a , a total of 557 million Indian population was unbanked in 2011. report Even though VISA and MasterCard have a duopoly in card payments, they were partnered with only 55 banks in India. Most of them are private or corporate banks. There was no support for other banks whatsoever. NPCI leveraged these disadvantages and started working precisely on them. NPCI, RBI and the Indian government started zero-balance bank accounts for people who can't afford to put much money in banks. Until 2015, the Indian unbanked population was halved to 223million compared to 2011. People from the bottom of the pyramid were getting into finance and banking and benefiting from it. RuPay's MDR Policy When RuPay was launched, it had a fixed MDR of 90 Indian paise regardless of the amount to be transacted. It was a huge factor considering how much Visa and MasterCard used to charge. It became possible for everyone to accept card-based payments. A few years back, in late 2019, the finance minister announced the Zero-MDR policy for RuPay. That means no extra charge will be deducted from the transaction. Since then, More merchants have been encouraged to use it along with the existing UPI system with a Zero-MDR policy. Contribution of Indian Government The Indian government itself promotes RuPay. The government successfully encouraged the Indian population to have an active bank account through RuPay and other government schemes. This laid the groundwork for Indian citizens' financial inclusion and created a pipeline for the government to efficiently distribute schemes and services to people who would otherwise have had such opportunities. In just a few years, NPCI announced four more cards under RuPay. It gives you instant access to your bank account anywhere in India. And it has personal accident death protection and disability coverage for the customer. PMJDY Debit Card : A customer can perform multiple withdrawals and credits to cost-effectively manage the working capital limit. Mudra Card : It offers a cash withdrawal facility, and its transaction cost is also meagre. It was exclusively designed for farmers having a particular account. PunGrain Card : Again focusing on the farmers, Kisan card is a need-based timely credit system. Kisan Card : What Lies Next After being the largest in Indian markets, RuPay is now expanding internationally. RuPay has entered global markets in 2014 itself. RuPay has issued over 64 million cards until 2019. These cards are accepted by 1.8 million ATMs and 41 million merchants in 190 countries around the globe. Singapore, UAE and Japan are a few countries showing massive interest in adapting RuPay. Despite all of this, RuPay has not shown its presence in a few other markets. Even though it has acquired the most significant share in the Indian debit card market, it still falls far behind in the credit card market. It holds only around 20% of the Indian market, and Visa and MasterCard dominate credit cards. Reviewing their listings, co-founder Joe Gebbia recalls that “the photos were really bad. People were using camera phones and taking Craigslist-quality pictures. Surprise! No one was booking because you couldn’t see what you were paying for.” Enter Paul Grahan of YC, one of their earliest investors, who recommended that the two experiments with a hack to improve bookings that were low tech and high effort — but it was fast to execute on and wound up incredibly effective. Chesky and Gebbia rented a $500 camera and went door to door, taking professional pictures of as many listings in the city as possible. Then they compared the number of bookings for the listings with the improved photos versus the rest of the New York listings and found that the new photos led to between two and three times more bookings, instantly doubling the revenue they were seeing from New York. DO THINGS THAT DON’T SCALE: 4 Inspirational Startup Examples

Recently I had the opportunity to travel around , interact with entrepreneurs and consumers, and witness the incredible change in consumer behavior. I’m jotting down some of my observations that I feel are worth sharing: India Digital consumerism India’s consumers are increasingly becoming digital at a pace much beyond our . They are multi-faceted, and transcend the boundaries posed by urban differentiation, age, literacy, and technological savviness. Here are some of my observations — imagination a. My 67 years old mother was technologically illiterate until six months back. I gifted her a smartphone so that I could connect with her when she stepped out of the house. I soon realized I had underestimated her tech ability when she sent me a whatsapp message and told me she had shopped online with a friend’s help. She had ordered a blender that wasn’t available in her Tier 4 town of Govardhan in northern India. She was thrilled to know that the product was 30 per cent cheaper online. She has now installed Flipkart on her phone and browses through it for good deals. As she learned more about the online world, she joined Facebook to connect with her children and grandchildren, turned to Facetime for a virtual experience, and became a YouTube user to watch devotional songs. b. A good friend of mine, who recently returned to his hometown, Jaipur (Tier 2 City) from New York got a re-entry shock when he discovered the rapid digitalization of India. He has replicated his American consumer behavior in Jaipur and uses e-commerce actively to buy and sell a vast range of items ranging from grocery to furniture. Here are some of his recent transactions- i. Bought a brand new sofa at Snapdeal and got it delivered within a few days. ii. Used OLX to sell his old sofa at a very reasonable price. iii. Uses PayTm for a regular supply of high quality dry fruit from a different state. c. In the US, we recently moved to online grocery shopping but it took my wife a long time to give up retail shopping for perishable items. During this visit, I was surprised to see that in India, a large number of people are graduating to online order services like Big Basket and Grofers. This trend is not limited to only Tier 1 cities in India but becoming mainstream in Tier II cities as well. d. In the last one or two years, there has been a major shift in the behavioral pattern of car owners. Instead of commuting in their chauffeur driven cars, many now prefer to switch to on-demand taxi services like Ola and Uber. They feel it’s more convenient to limit themselves to a single car given the lack of parking space. Additionally it’s more economical and it eliminates their dependence on a personal driver. e. In addition to digital consumers, SMEs are increasingly conducting businesses on Whatsapp. Vendors are taking orders and getting immediate confirmation from their customers through this mobile app. Not to be left behind, religious leaders have also discovered the efficiency of whatsapp to disseminate their thoughts to their followers. Passion and energy of Indian entrepreneurship The next wave of growth is not only being led by Tatas, Birlas, and Ambanis of India. Matching their steps or sometimes surpassing them are the forward looking first generation entrepreneurs. Most of them are in their 20s and 30s, have a bold vision, and the determination to achieve their big, hairy, audacious goals. Here’s what I gleaned from my interactions with the following entrepreneurs- Naveen Tewari, a good friend, who operates from Bangalore (India’s silicon valley), is focused on disrupting the way mobile advertising industry operates globally. While a lot has been said about how his company has already made a dent in the industry globally, what stood out for me is the culture that he has created for employees to grow and realize their full potential. The philosophy is to create a culture which helps grow employees vs. manage their performance. For instance, if an employee has an idea, which could help the company grow, he or she is encouraged to pursue it. More interestingly, if an employee wants to take the entrepreneurial route, Inmobi’s ecosystem provides the required support (e.g., use of office space, support network, mentorship). Such a culture is a new phenomenon in India, and Naveen is one of the pioneers in India. a. InMobi: Vineet Saxena, another good friend who was a co-founder of Myntra, a popular online fashion retailer, is one of the pioneers who helped shape the e-commerce market in India. He is now working on an audacious goal of creating at-scale private brands for ethnic wears in India through his latest venture, Indusdivas, an Indian ethnic wear portal. b. Indusdiva: Founded by twenty-something IIT Roorkee alumni, Shashank Kumar and Harshil Mathur, Razorpay, aims to revolutionize the online payment industry in India. In a market where the competition is high for the online payment gateway solutions, they claim to have a much superior product tailored for the Indian market (e.g., slow connection, unreliable network). They are hoping to capture a lion’s share of the market without being caught in a price war c. Razorpay: Deepak Garg, a former McKinsey consultant has taken on the mammoth task for transforming the traditional inter-city logistics industry via technology. He feels that the problem in India is at the supply side: be it the quality of trucks, driver efficiency, or the optimum route. He has established a fleet of trucks equipped with technology for optimal fuel efficiency and route, and created hubs around the country to minimize truck downtime, and improve the quality of life for drivers. He is looking to streamline the highly fragmented trucking industry in India (which could be over $100 billion in India) and could potentially be going global. d. Rivigo (earlier Trucksfirst): Finally I met a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs who are looking to solve India specific problems (e.g., commuting, skill development, online education, e-commerce repeat delivery cost). A common thread that runs through their stories is that they are dreaming big while being grounded in reality in terms of solving real pain points. They are also brave enough to let go of their traditional paychecks and are brimming with confidence to help shape a new India. More to come…. �sS �
